Sentence Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. 1 Peter 1:3

The Collect

Almighty and eternal God, the strength of those who believe and the hope of those who doubt: may we, who have not seen, have faith and receive the fullness of Christ’s blessing; who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

A Reading from Acts 2:14a, 22-32 14

But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them: ‘Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 22‘You that are Israelites, listen to what I have to say: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with deeds of power, wonders, and signs that God did through him among you, as you yourselves know—23this man, handed over to you according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of those outside the law. 24 But God raised him up, having freed him from death, because it was impossible for him to be held in its power. 25For David says concerning him, “I saw the Lord always before me, for he is at my right hand so that I will not be shaken; 26therefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; moreover, my flesh will live in hope. 27For you will not abandon my soul to Hades, or let your Holy One experience corruption. 28You have made known to me the ways of life; you will make me full of gladness with your presence.” 29‘Fellow Israelites, I may say to you confidently of our ancestor David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day. 30Since he was a prophet, he knew that God had sworn with an oath to him that he would put one of his descendants on his throne. 31 Foreseeing this, David spoke of the resurrection of the Messiah, saying, “He was not abandoned to Hades, nor did his flesh experience corruption.” 32This Jesus God raised up, and of that all of us are witnesses. Preserve me, O God: for in you have I taken refuge. I have said to the Lord, You are my lord: and all my good depends on you. As for those who are held holy on the earth: the other gods in whom people delight, Though the idols are many that they run after: their offerings of blood I will not offer, nor take their name upon my lips. The Lord is my appointed portion and my cup: you hold my lot in your hands. The share that has fallen to me is in pleasant places: and a fair land is my possession. I will bless the Lord who has given me counsel: at night also he has instructed my heart. I have set the Lord always before me: he is at my right hand, and I shall not fall. Therefore my heart is glad and my spirit rejoices: my flesh also shall rest secure. For you will not give me over to the power of death: nor suffer your faithful one to see the Pit. You will show me the path of life: in your presence is the fulness of joy, and from your right hand flow delights for evermore.

A Reading from 1 Peter 1:1-12 1

Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To the exiles of the Dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2who have been chosen and destined by God the Father and sanctified by the Spirit to be obedient to Jesus Christ and to be sprinkled with his blood: May grace and peace be yours in abundance. 3Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By his great mercy he has given us a new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5who are being protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6In this you rejoice, even if now for a little while you have had to suffer various trials, 7so that the genuineness of your faith—being more precious than gold that, though perishable, is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8Although you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy, 9for you are receiving the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. 10Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied of the grace that was to be yours made careful search and inquiry, 11inquiring about the person or time that the Spirit of Christ within them indicated, when it testified in advance to the sufferings destined for Christ and the subsequent glory. 12It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in regard to the things that have now been announced to you through those who brought you good news by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven—things into which angels long to look! AND ALSO WITH YOU

The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John 20:19-31 ALLELUIA! ALLELUIA! When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ 20After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.’ 22When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.’ 24But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25So the other disciples told him, ‘We have seen the Lord.’ But he said to them, ‘Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.’ 26A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, ‘Peace be with you.’ 27Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.’ 28Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’ 29Jesus said to him, ‘Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.’ 30Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. 31But these are written so that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name. 19

This is the Gospel of the Lord

Parish Council Meeting Summary: Parish Council met via ZOOM on Wednesday 12 April, 2023. The Venerable Rod Winterton was welcomed to his first Parish Council meeting as Locum. Agnes Elkenhans was appointed Minutes Secretary for this meeting. (Parishioners are reminded that this position remains vacant and could be filled by a volunteer from outside Council). The Wardens’ Report was accepted. It said in part, “The apparently seamless passing of the baton from the Rev’d Lee to the Ven Rod on Palm Sunday was a testament to the professionalism and dedication to the service to God and our parishioners of both priests. Welcomed into St Clements without fanfare, the Ven Rod was an integral part of our celebration of Easter. The Rev’d Lee’s leadership of our worship during her period as Locum was outstanding. We thank her on behalf of the Parish.” The Treasurer, Agnes Elkenhans presented her report and the supporting documentation. St Clements is well placed to meet its financial obligations into the future. However, the deficits which appear almost every month raise concerns for Councillors. Bread Boards: The Mens’ Shed are donating two of their outstanding bread boards to the Fundraising Committee. These will be sold at the Stafford City Stall. Parish Council expects they’ll disappear like hot cakes. Thank you Men’s Shed. Interregnum Rental of the Rectory: Councillors believe a short-term rental of the Rectory should be investigated. This would provide a much-appreciated boost to our bottom line and add one property on to the rental market in these times of housing crisis. The Wardens will investigate the feasibility of the proposal. Long Term Lease of the Lower Hall Kitchen: An informal expression of interest in leasing our kitchen for commercial purposes has been received by a Councillor. The Wardens will seek the assistance of others to ascertain if a business case for the proposition exists. Parish Profile: This significant document in our search for a new Rector requires considerable updating. It has not been altered since Father Kevin was appointed. Gwen Amankwah-Toa is co-ordinating the revision. If you have any suggestions about topics that should be included in the document, please see Gwen, or call her before next Wednesday. Discussion Paper: Meaning of Elector: This ACSQ paper is in response to a motion before Synod to reconsider the definitions of Parishioners and Electors. The paper arose in part as a result of the growing numbers of people who participate in services and other parish activities online. If you have any comments, please see Norm, or call him before next Wednesday. He is collating Parish Council’s response. Copies of the paper and our response will be on the notice board at the back of the Church next week. Voice to Parliament Referendum: Parish Council will seek out ACSQ and Anglican Church material on the referendum and share it with Parishioners. If you have any questions or concerns about this report, please speak to a Parish Councillor.

NOMINATION PROCESS TO APPOINT OUR NEW PRIEST The Presentation Board Nominators from St Clements, Denis, Gwen and James, met with Bishop Jeremy Greaves at St Martin’s House on Thursday 13th April to go through the process of seeking and discernment of the appointment of a Priest to our Parish and the role of Presentation Boards. Information on the role of Presentation Boards is available at the back of the Church. The Parish profile will be available from the week beginning 30th April, 2023. Any Parishioners who would like to make a recommendation of a suitable prospective Priest can bring the names forward at any time to any of our three Nominators. All names of potential candidates are CONFIDENTIAL. As your Parish Nominators go through the discernment process with the Bishop and Diocesan Nominators, Parishioners are asked to pray each day, the “prayer at the time of choosing an incumbent”, which can be found on the inside back cover of this pew bulletin.

outing to the GLASSHOUSE MOUNTAINS area on Saturday 13 May 2023…… The ‘SOLDIER SETTLERS TRAIL’ plus circuit walk around Mount Tibrogargan, approx 8km. Please Note: This walk is linked to the late afternoon Bribie Sunset Cruise which was rescheduled but of course is optional should you not be wanting to do the morning walk. But certainly a great way to spend your Saturday away from the busy burbs! We start this picturesque walk from the Beerburrum trailhead, with car parking adjacent to the Beerburrum State School just off the Steve Irwin Way. Huge bottle brushes and healthy grass trees feature in this forest walk which follows some low stoney ridges and fern lined gullies. Mostly easy walking with some steps to negotiate but numerous tree roots and rocks for tripping hazards so good walking boots are recommended. The Tibrogargan end is busier especially on a weekend. We do a circuit around the base and take a ‘wee’ stop before offering an optional short detour up to the Jack Ferris Lookout that invites an excellent view of most of the Glasshouse volcanic crag mountains. We return to the trailhead for lunch and then the designated ‘lift’ cars take all walkers back to their vehicles at Beerburrum where we can enjoy an afternoon coffee at the local café before the drive home……. unless that is if you have also paid up for the rescheduled Bribie Island Sunset Cruise that departs from the marina at 4.30pm (35 passengers have booked for this cruise). Car pooling is recommended and please remember to contribute to fuel costs. Wear good walking boots/shoes and bring hat, sunscreen, water, repellent, morning tea and lunch. Assemble in the Beerburrum School car park between 9.00 and 9.30am and allow at least an hour’s drive from Stafford. There will be designated ‘lift’ cars that will be left at Tibrogargan for the return back to the car park / café at Beerburrum, only a 10 minute drive. Please register your interest on the form on the church back table or contact David on 0430 122 453 or email: [email protected]
