This Bulletin is intended for you to take away, to think and to pray over, and to share with others. Spare copies can be obtained from the ushers or the clergy. If you are visiting or if you are looking for a church home, please be sure to complete a visitors card before you leave. The Ushers will be happy to give you one. Welcome to Christ Episcopal Church!! The Clergy and Members of this church welcome all of you today. We consider it a privilege to have you worship with us and sincerely hope you will receive a blessing from the service. Dear Friends, when we enter this sacred place, let our conversation with each other cease. Take time in the silence before the Eucharist begins to make the transition from “getting here” to “being here”. Let us center ourselves and focus on the reality of The Living God Who is in our midst. Take these moments to recall the troubles, achievements, and gifts of grace of the past week. With thanks for our strengths and resources, offer our needs and cares in this holy place. Let us remember all who have lived and worshipped here, all who have brought us to this time. As the community gathers may we sense the Spirit. May we be prepared to give and to receive. May we be blessed by our time here. Prayer(s) upon entering church: Prepare our hearts, O Father, for the coming of the Lord, Christ Jesus. May the wind of the Spirit blow away the dust and dead leaves which we have allowed to accumulate in our spirits. May the fires of the Spirit purge and refine and warm our hearts. Let the doors of our souls be open to bid him welcome as he comes once again to us in this Advent season. In this season, take from our souls the strain and stress that so often accompanies our activities this time of the year. Let none of the little human duties cause us to miss the wonder of his presence with us. To that end let us direct our lives and hearts beginning today as we celebrate the preparation of Advent. Amen. Almighty God, who before and after and every day is the same, we pause at the gate of this new year to claim your power and proclaim your love for all persons. As we begin our journey in worship, open us to all you intend for us, gathering our past into a rich present and a hopeful future, through Christ our Lord, who waits there. Amen Prayer(s) before leaving church: Lord, Grant that what we have heard with our ears, and said and sung with our lips, we may believe in our hearts, and practiced in our daily lives, through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen. Accept, O Lord, the praise we bring to you; pardon the imperfections of our worship; write upon our hearts your holy word; and give us grace to love and serve and praise you all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

From the Rector’s Desk O come, O come, Emmanuel, And ransom captive Israel, That mourns in lonely exile here, Until the Son of God appear. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel Shall come to thee, O Israel. (Verse 1 - Hymn 56 The Hymnal 1982) Today is the fist Sunday of Advent, and the first Sunday in the Church’s liturgical year. The word ‘Advent’ comes from the Latin word ‘adventus’ which means ‘coming’. During the season of Advent we celebrate the God who ‘comes’ to us, in His Word, in His Sacraments, and through His creation. The first verse of hymn 56 reminds us of how the children of Israel who found themselves in exile: in a strange land away from all that was familiar and safe, enslaved, and persecuted, longed for the Messiah who was to come and free them from their oppressors, improve their quality of life, and restore them to their rightful place. Although we in this country may not find ourselves in exactly the same place as the children of Israel, we certainly can relate to the feeling of being lost, confused, and afraid. Murder, crime, gun violence, political divisions, social unrest, natural disasters, racial prejudice, economic instability, and a society that is a ‘melting pot’ of cultures, faiths and values that conflict with God’s standards, is evidence that like Israel, we too are in need of a Savior. The good news for Christians is that the God whom we serve is the God who came, the God who is with us, and the God who will come! It is up to us to open our minds, hearts, and the eyes of our faith to see this God, and to pattern our lives and the lives of those around us after this God. The Church has given us a wonderful opportunity that the world often ignores: an opportunity to see the value and importance of preparation for the gifts and grace of God. Let us therefore not be too hasty to celebrate Christmas… An examination of the Advent theme, lessons and hymns remind us how God intricately and intentionally planned and prepared us for the events that would lead to our salvation. Just as God saw fit to prepare us, let us learn from Him and play our part in being prepared to receive Him. As we sing this wonderful Advent hymn, let us ask God to ransom our land and celebrate the belief that God is with us, and will save us if we put our trust in Him!

The celebration of Christ's birth on the 25th December was introduced as a special feast in Rome in the middle of the fourth century, and quickly became one of the main feasts of the Christian Year. During this time also, the practice of keeping a penitential season before Christmas became widespread. In the 13th century it was fixed to the four weeks leading up to Christmas. The name Advent means coming, and refers both to the coming of Christ in his birth at Bethlehem, and to his coming as the Judge of all at the end of time. The Sunday readings and hymns reflect this dual theme of Christ's coming as Saviour and Judge; our joy and our penitence; our 'already- but-not-yet' existence. The Advent wreath originated several hundred years ago among the Lutherans of eastern Germany, and probably came from the symbols of light that were used in folklore during the winter months of November and December. At that time of the year, pre-Christian culture feared the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year, as a time when the malignant activity of evil spirits was especially active. During the month of Yule (December) lighted candles were placed on a wheel, with a prayer that the god of light turn the wheel of the earth toward tile sun and lengthen the days. The Church Christianized many of these light and fire symbols. The evergreens, branches of fir, originally placed near the hearth, symbolized the everlasting life found in Christ. This is the origin of our plastic Christmas trees. One of the branches, bent to form a circle, further symbolized life without end. The candles symbolized God's Son as the light of the world, and there are four candles for the four weeks of Advent. Gradually the Advent wreath became a traditional symbol reminding the faithful of the Old Testament, when humanity was 'sitting in darkness and in the shadow of death'; when the prophets illumined by God, announced the coming of the Redeemer; and when the hearts of humans glowed with the desire for the Messiah. The wreath itself came to symbolize the fulfillment of time - the coming of Christ and the glory of His birth. The Advent Wreath By John Parton

The Solemn Sung Eucharist of The First Sunday of Advent / Commitment Sunday (Year A) 27th November 2022 – 9:00 a.m. Celebrant: Fr. Jonathan Archer Deacon of the Eucharist: Rev. Elaine Jessup Prelude: “Simple Gifts”........................................................... Russell Schulz-Widmar (1944- ) Blessing of the Advent Wreath Cel: My brothers and sisters in Christ, as we begin the season of Advent, let this wreath remind us that Christ came to conquer the darkness of sin and to lead us into the light of His glorious kingdom, as the prophet Isaiah says, “The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them a light has shined.” (Isaiah 9:2) Cel: Our help is in the name of the Lord, All: Who has made heaven and earth. Cel: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. Cel: Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, the true light who comes into the world to enlighten everyone, bless this wreath and these candles as they are lit in preparation for Your coming, and so enkindle our hearts with the fire of Your love that we may receive You with joy and gladness, and evermore remain steadfast in the faith; as you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. All: Amen. Cel: May God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, bless this wreath for use in His Church throughout this holy season of Advent. All: Amen.

The Lighting of the Candles of Advent Cel: Today is the first Sunday of Advent, the Sunday in which we recall the hope we have in Christ. The prophets of Israel all spoke of the coming of Christ, of how a Savior would be born, a king in the line of David. They spoke of how He would rule the world wisely and bless all nations. On Christmas day the Christ of our hope was born. On Good Friday the Christ of our hope died. On Easter day the Christ of our hope rose from the dead. He then ascended into heaven. On the last day, the Christ of our hope will come again to establish His kingdom over all things on earth. As the followers of Christ, we await His return. We light this candle to remember that as He came to us humbly in the manger at Bethlehem and gave light to the world, so He is coming again in power to deliver his people. We light this candle to remind us to be alert and to watch for His return. (A Young Person Lights the Candle of hope) Cel: Let us pray: All: Loving God, we thank you for the hope you give us. Help us prepare our hearts for the Lord's coming. Bless our worship. Help us live holy and righteous lives. We ask it in the name of the one born in Bethlehem. Amen. The Advent Candlelight Carol (Sung to the Tune “Away in a Manger” Words: Sandra Dean 1986) A Candle is burning, a flame warm and bright, A candle of HOPE in the darkness of night. While angels sing blessing from heaven’s starry sky, Our hearts we prepare now for Jesus is nigh. Introit Hymn: “Hark! BCP 211 A lmighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

All: Amen. Collect of the Day (For the Ministry: III. For all Christians in their vocation).....BCP 256 A lmighty and everlasting God, by whose Spirit the whole body of your faithful people is governed and sanctified: Receive our supplications and prayers, which we offer before you for all members of your holy Church, that in their vocation and ministry they may truly and devoutly serve you; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. All: Amen. THE MINISTRY OF THE WORD The First Lesson: Isaiah 2:1-5 ...........................................................................Hiram Williams Reader: A Reading from Isaiah, chapter 2, verse 1 to verse 5. 2:1The word that Isaiah son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. 2 In days to come the mountain of the Lord’s house shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall stream to it. 3Many peoples shall come and say, ‘Come, let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, to the house of the God of Jacob; that he may teach us his ways and that we may walk in his paths.’ For out of Zion shall go forth instruction, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. 4He shall judge between the nations, and shall arbitrate for many peoples; they shall beat their swords into ploughshares, and their spears into pruning-hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. 5O house of Jacob, come, let us walk in the light of the Lord! Reader: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. 9 The Second Lesson: Romans 13:11-14..............................................................Joyce Williams Reader: A Reading from Romans, chapter 13, verse 11 to verse 14. 13:11You know what time it is, how it is now the moment for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we became believers; 12the night is far gone, the day is near. Let us then lay aside the works of darkness and put on the armor of light; 13let us live honorably as in the day, not in reveling and drunkenness, not in debauchery and licentiousness, not in quarreling and jealousy. 14Instead, put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and

make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires. Reader: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. Sequence Hymn: “Love divine, all loves excelling” .........................................HYMNAL 657 Gospel: Matthew 24:36-44...........................................................................................Gospeler Gospeler: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. Gospeler: A Reading from the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew the 24rd chapter, beginning at the 36th verse. All: Glory to you Lord Christ. Jesus said to the disciples, 24:36“But about that day and hour no one knows, neither the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 37For as the days of Noah were, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, 39and they knew nothing until the flood came and swept them all away, so too will be the coming of the Son of Man. 40Then two will be in the field; one will be taken and one will be left. 41Two women will be grinding meal together; one will be taken and one will be left. 42Keep awake therefore, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming. 43But understand this: if the owner of the house had known in what part of the night the thief was coming, he would have stayed awake and would not have let his house be broken into. 44Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an unexpected hour.” Gospeler: The Gospel of the Lord. All: Praise to you Lord Christ. Sermon:.........................................................................................................Fr. Jonathan Archer At the conclusion of the sermon the congregation stands, and is led in the Act of Commitment by the Celebrant Act of Commitment (Written by Canon Crosley N. Walkine - Diocese of the Bahamas & The Turks and Caicos Islands) Celebrant: Today is a day of celebration in the life of The Church of the Holy Spirit because today we remember that each and every one of us — young and old — is called by God to be stewards of justice, stewards of creation, stewards of peace, stewards of this family of faith.

Stewards give from all aspects of their lives. As we accept this call to be stewards, we each become a living example of Christ’s gospel, proclaiming faith through all that we do and all that we give. As it is written in 1 Peter, “Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received.” And so, people of God, I ask you now, do you promise to enter into this covenant together to be God’s stewards with all your mind and heart? If so, please answer, “I do.” All: I do Celebrant: Gracious God, you have made a world for us and given us incomparable gifts: air and water, family and friends, your steadfast love and forgiveness, and your son Jesus the Christ. For all the gifts and wonders you have bestowed on us. All: We thank you and worship you with renewed gratitude. Celebrant: O God, you created us to love one another as Christ has loved us. We are concerned about all your children, those who live near us, and those who live far away. We are eager to participate in the work of the whole church and to further the ministry and service of this congregation. All: We are called to be your stewards. We thoughtfully shoulder our personal share of responsibility, and we pledge to witness to the good news of Christ with our hearts and hands and voices. Celebrant: We are confident in your love and care for us. All: We gladly give back to our Gracious God our whole lives, our time, our talents, and our financial resources. Celebrant: Use us, O God, as instruments of your love in the world. All: Use us, O God. Celebrant: Use us to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ in a world where bad news abounds. All: Use us, O God. Celebrant: Use us to reach out to the lonely, the despairing, the poor, the despised, the sick, the grieving, the dying, and the hopeless -- those we know and those we do not know; help us to touch them with your healing power that they might find hope and renewal, forgiveness and faith, wholeness and purpose in you. All: Use us, O God.

Celebrant: Use our lives as living examples of Christ in the world, giving himself in love. All: Use us, O God. Celebrant: Use our talents to bring Christ to all people and to bring them to him. All: Use us, O God. Celebrant: Use our resources and our offerings to undergird and continually expand our ministry in our church, in our community and in our diocese. All: Use us, O God. Celebrant: Use our church as a place for all people, a refuge in the storm, a focus for faith, a house for worship, a portal of peace, a fountain of forgiveness, a school for learning, a resource for equipping, and a center for mission. All: Use us, O God. The Hymn: “We all are one in mission” (Tune – Stand up Stand up for Jesus) 1. We all are one in mission, we all are one in call Our varied gifts united by Christ the Lord of all. A single great commission compels us from above to plan and work together that all may know Christ’s love. 2. We all are called for service to witness in God’s name Our ministries are different our purpose is the same. To touch the lives of others by God’s surprising Grace So every folk and nation may feel God’s warm embrace. 3. Now let us be united and let our song be heard. Now let us be a vessel for God’s redeeming Word. We all are one in mission we all are one in call Our varied gifts united by Christ the Lord of all. The Celebrant and people say: Loving and Gracious God, we are blessed and we thank you for the richness you place in our lives. Fill our hearts with gratitude so that we may joyfully share our wondrous gifts of time, talent, and treasure. Help us to be ever mindful of the needs of our church family. Teach us to be good and faithful stewards. Show us how to take good care of each other and the world that you have entrusted to us. We ask all of this through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Prayers Over the Pledge Cards (Adapted from a prayer by The Rt. Rev. Greg Rickel, Bishop of Olympia, Taken from The Episcopal Network for Stewardship (https://www.tens.org)) Gracious and loving God, giver of life, and all that is good and true and beautiful; these pledge cards bear witness to the fruit of our labor, Your grace and mercy, and our trust and faith in You. The pledges which we make on them are but tokens of the gifts that have been given to us, and they are pledged acknowledging who You are, and in thanksgiving for all we have received, all we have been inspired to be, and for all we are challenged to become, in this place. May they be the first fruits of all we have and not what we have left over, so that we may live out as closely as possible, how you give to us. May we see them as our offering to you: sacred holy committed acts of faith, to a God Who has blessed us with so much. May we hold this image in our hearts and minds, so as we watch our offerings come to your table each week, we see our very selves being a part of this offering, living sacrifices to you; Through Jesus Christ our Lord. 21 The Celebration Continues Serving God and the Community for 121 years Let us continue to follow in the footsteps of our founders who were instrumental in building our sanctuary and continued to assist with the maintenance of its physical structure and fabric. The months of March, December, and September are significant in our church’s history because they reflect the historical sequence of the founding of our Church: March 24, 1901: The first meeting of the founding families was held. December 20, 1901: Bishop Gray officially organized the mission congregation. September 1904: The first service was held in the new building which was conducted by the bishop. To celebrate 121 years of service to God and our community, a service of thanksgiving will be held on Sunday, December 11, 2022.Beginning at 9:00 am, the Sunshine Junkanoo Band will lead the HISTORIC procession to the site of the Clark Family (the house where the first meeting was held) and back to our church. The guest speaker will be our very own Mrs. Antoinette Silva Simmons, daughter, and granddaughter of one of the pioneer families in Coconut Grove, the Stirrup family. We are asking for a donation of $121.00 (one dollar for each year) per person. Checks should be made payable to Christ Episcopal Church. Please indicate 121st Anniversary in the memo. Your financial support is greatly appreciated!! Let us continue to maintain the history of this great church, never forgetting those faithful members who have passed on. We look forward to you joining us on this day of celebration. The Fundraising Committee

You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me—the whole nation of you! 25 Christ Episcopal Church - Endowment Fund Endow for the Future Christ Episcopal Church, a historical site, has continued to build upon the legacy of enriching the lives of its members and the community. The Endowment Fund plays a vital role in continuing this mission. In 2004, Dr. David White’s vision for this historical church, led him to research information on endowments pertaining to Christ Episcopal Church. He presented the proposal to the Vestry and leaders of various organizations to review it for approval. The endowment was approved on June 27, 2004 under Father Bernard Griffith. The Endowment Fund was established to preserve the heritage of Christ Episcopal Church, Miami, Florida, to encourage stewardship, to foster spiritual growth, to support Parish work in God’s service, and to ensure that this work can/would continue for future generations. Through this endowment fund, the committee seeks to provide a perpetual source of income in support of educational programs for youth and adults, along with other projects that sustain and grow the mission of Christ Episcopal Church for generations to come. 2 Corinthians 9:7 Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. Christians can give to support the work of the Church in a variety of gift vehicles in addition to cash, including bequests in wills, life income gifts, annuities, trusts, life insurance policies, real estate, securities, and other assets. It is the desire of this Parish to encourage, receive, and administer these gifts in a manner faithful to the loyalty and devotion to God, expressed by the donors, and in accordance with the Canons of the Episcopal Church and Diocese of Southeast Florida. A gift to Christ Episcopal Church’s Endowment Fund is a special way to remember or honor your loved ones. Leave a legacy through an endowed gift in your name or the name of a love one (a gift that creates a permanent source of support for the mission that will be there long after the giver is gone.) Because of your support, our endowment fund can continue to grow our mission and vision. We are grateful to all who have donated and continue to donate. Thank you for giving generously. May God bless and keep you. If you would like to join this list of generous donors, make a gift to support our mission and vision of Christ Episcopal Church for years to come: Please make your check payable to “Christ Episcopal Church” and designate it for “Endowment Fund” and mail or deliver it to: Christ Episcopal Church 3481 Hibiscus Street Miami, FL 33133 Or you may want to donate online at: www.chrepch.org and designate “Endowment Fund” in the memo section.

From the Net (www.odb.org) Devotion for November 27th , 2022 So Beautiful We are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works. Ephesians 2:10 Today's Scripture & Insight: Ephesians 2:1–10 I was very young when I peered through a hospital nursery window and saw a newborn for the first time. In my ignorance, I was dismayed to see a tiny, wrinkly child with a hairless, cone-shaped head. The baby’s mother standing near us, however, couldn’t stop asking everyone, “Isn’t he gorgeous?” I was reminded of that moment when I saw a video of a young dad tenderly singing the song, “You Are So Beautiful” to his baby girl. To her enraptured daddy, the little girl was the most beautiful thing ever created. Is that how God looks at us? Ephesians 2:10 says that we’re His “handiwork”—His masterpiece. Aware of our own failings, it may be hard for us to accept how much He loves us or to believe that we could ever be of value to Him. But God doesn’t love us because we deserve love (vv. 3–4); He loves us because He is love (1 John 4:8). His love is one of grace, and He showed the depth of it when, through Jesus’ sacrifice, He made us alive in Him when we were dead in our sins (Ephesians 2:5, 8). God’s love isn’t fickle. It’s constant. He loves the imperfect, the broken, those who are weak and those who mess up. When we fall, He’s there to lift us up. We’re His treasure, and we’re so beautiful to Him. By: Cindy Hess Kasper Reflect & Pray What does it mean to know that “God is love”? How can you accept the truth of God’s endless love for you when you feel undeserving of it? Precious Father, thank You for Your love for me.

NEWS FROM THE HEALTH MINISTRY November is American Diabetes Month: Understanding type 1 Here’s what you need to know about type 1 diabetes. 1.25 million Americans have it and 40,000 people will be diagnosed with it this year. Type 1 diabetes occurs at every age, in people of every race, and of every shape and size. There is no shame in having it, and you have a community of people ready to support you. Learning as much as you can about it and working closely with your diabetes care team can give you everything you need to thrive. In type 1 diabetes, the body does not produce insulin. The body breaks down the carbohydrates you eat into blood sugar that it uses for energy—and insulin is a hormone that the body needs to get glucose from the bloodstream into the cells of the body. With the help of insulin therapy and other treatments, everyone can learn to manage their condition and live long healthy lives. Remember: this is a condition that can be managed. By living a healthy lifestyle filled with exercise and proper diet, you can live a normal life and do everything you set out to do. Understanding type 2 Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes—and it means that your body doesn’t use insulin properly. And while some people can control their blood sugar levels with healthy eating and exercise, others may need medication or insulin to help manage it. Regardless, you have options—and tools, resources, and support to help you fight. A key part of managing type 2 diabetes is maintaining a healthy diet. You need to eat something sustainable that helps you feel better and still makes you feel happy and fed. Remember, it’s a process. Work to find helpful tips and diet plans that best suit your lifestyle— and how you can make your nutritional intake work the hardest for you. Fitness is another key to managing type 2. And the good news, all you have to do is get moving. The key is to find activities you love and do them as often as you can. No matter how fit you are, a little activity every day can help fight type 2 and put yourself in charge of your life. For more information, resources, and preventative measures, contact the American Diabetes Association at :https://www.diabetes.org/
