carc comms April 2023

WELCOME Dear Colleagues Welcome to this month’s edition of Carco Comms! and once again it’s filled with lots of interesting news and information. We are rapidly approaching the end of Q1 and it has been an extremely busy period. Aside for the major projects we have on-going at the moment, business on the whole has seen an encouraging start to the year. It will be a couple of weeks before we finalise the Q1 results and I will report on these in next month’s newsletter. Towards the end of April, we will start the process of physically moving departments over to Pioneer Park from Castle Court. The first wave of relocating departments will begin with Peugeot Sales (New & Used cars), Marketing, HR and Compliance and we will announce the first day of trading once we have confirmation of the installation date for the Peugeot corporate signage as we cannot operate the franchise without this being in place. I hope to have confirmation of this in the next few days. The second wave will be announced once we have a firm completion date for the refurbishment works in Citroen building which are currently progressing well. In any event, we plan to be out of Castle Court by the end of June and trying to manage the need to run the business at the same time as we prepare to relocate a major element of the organisation comes with its challenges. Nevertheless, I remain confident that we will hit the appropriate deadlines along the way. Roll on July..! Finally, with Easter around the corner and several bank holidays in May, Q2 will come with some headwinds. If we overlay this with a relocation of a major part of the business, I think we will have some challenges to contend with. However, with the continued support, co-operation and patience of all those affected by the move, I am sure the process will be as smooth as possible.

Thank you for you continued hard work and have a nice Easter. Kind regards Robin

MASTER TECHNICIANS This Month we wanted to shine the spotlight on Danny Jones & Jarred Toms. Both currently hold the role of Master Technicians at their relevant site for Renault & Dacia. They have worked tremendously hard over the years and have achieved the highest certification and expertise in their fields. But, what many may not know, is that both Danny & Jarred started their Automotive Carers with Carco Group Ltd and over the years completed extensive training, education, various certification exam, and on-the-job experience to progress them into the role of Master Technicians that they hold today. Join us as we discover a little bit more about both of their journeys…

14

Danny Jones – Master Technician, City Motors Renault • How long have you worked for the Carco group? I started as a Trainee Technician on my 16th Birthday just over 13 years ago. • What made you decide to become a Master Technician My role into Master Technician was a natural progression, with the previous Master Technician ‘Bravo’ leaving, it allowed me to further develop my skills and progress to a Senior Technician and then on to Master Technician. • Can you tell me a little about your journey to becoming a Master Technician? I originally joined Carco Group and started in the workshop of the S J Cook & Sons Branch alongside Ollie Cook, Jarred Thomas & Paul Clarke to name a few. Then after a few years, I moved to the City Motors site to provide muchneeded support and assistance to the team and help boost their revenue/billable hours. I worked closely with ‘Bravo’ at the time who would diagnose the issues with the car and challenge me with fixing them. • What would you say was the biggest challenge when working towards this qualification? Actually, I found the Senior Technician role more challenging, this was focused on learning how to fix a car, the Master Technician role was much easier journey and I spent several weeks developing skills on how to speak to customers and professionally discuss diagnostic issues. • How were you supported in reaching this goal? I was given the support needed to complete this goal within my working hours. • What’s been one of your favourite moments since working for Carco Group? I would say my favourite memory of mine had to be very early in my career when working at S J Cook & Sons. Pete Weston the MOT tester at the time was working in a section where rainwater continuously dripped on his head, so he kept adding more and more clothes on top of his head to try and lessen it, however, he did completely forget he had done this ended up speaking with a customer for a good period of time with the pile of now damp cloths still on his head, At not one point did Pete or the customer stop to acknowledge this and carried on their conversation like normal… • Is there a moment that you are most proud of, a highlight for you? There is no stand-out moment for me, I have enjoyed so many parts of my role over the years. • What advice would you give to anyone considering training for their Master Technician qualification? Except that some things are just what they are, sometimes it going to be frustrating and sometimes you wish you could just ‘fix’ that car, but learning to accept it for what it is will help massively.

15

Jarred Toms – Master Technician, City Motors Renault & Dacia

• How long have you worked for Carco group? Around 19 years, I started out on the Renault Apprentice Scheme when I finished school at the age of 16. • What made you decide to become a Master Technician? To push my understanding of cars as far as possible. I worked closely with ‘Bravo’ John Hawkins over the years and his move to the City Motors site allowed me to take the next steps. • Can you tell me a little about your journey to becoming a Master Technician? I started with the Renault apprenticeship scheme in 2004, then in 2014, I did a 5-week course toward my Senior Technicianrole and then a few months later completed my Master Technician course over a 3-week period. • What would you say was the biggest challenge when working towards this qualification? I found the qualification quite straightforward, what a lot of people don’t realise is there is no studying or course work required, no Exams to be completed, the course is achievable for everyone and the training comes from the on-hand learning experience. • How were you supported in reaching this goal? Being given time to do any training that was required and also being allowed to work through vehicle faults at my own pace to help build a better understanding moving forward. Always being encouraged along the way. • What’s been one of your favourite moments since working for Carco Group? Being given the opportunity to design and build the electric system on the Carco Group-sponsored Race car and watch it race without breaking down. • Is there a moment that you are most proud of, a highlight for you? Being given VIP Touring Car tickets from the Renault UK Training program. • What advice would you give to anyone considering training for their Master Technician qualification? Definitely go for it, it can be hard at times but also very rewarding and your level of knowledge will grow a huge amount.

SPECIAL MENTIONS Louis John - Congratulations! 2022 was the first year of Louis’s career doing national go-karting and what a year he had! He finished second overall out of 170+ Driver with the Final Race being hosted at Castle Coombe, finishing at an impressive second place, Louis missed out on First Place by just 3 points! His performance shone throughout the season and Louis secured himself 3 new sponsors for this upcoming season and had been offered a chance in 2024 to Race with ‘Fortec Motorsports’ Formula Ford Team, Louis needs one more year’s worth of karting experience to qualify and in 2023 will be aiming to get 1st place! Good luck for 2023 Louis, we wish you the best of Luck!

MUG OF APPRECIATION

Barney Smith Barney Smith has been nominated by Liam Simpson to receive the Mug of Appreciation for the month. Barney has been a great support to the service team in recent weeks and has gone above and beyond to assist with several collection and delivery service customers close to his home. Liam also wanted to acknowledge Barney’s great sales performance over the last few weeks. Thank you for your hard work and support Barney!

19

FACT OF THE MONTH Cadbury’s makes 500 million Creme Eggs every year! If you piled them on top of each other, it would be 10 x higher than Mount Everest. Of course, it would be rude of us to acknowledge this, but not assist with reaching the 500 million. To celebrate you will all find a box of Cadbury Creme eggs at your sites in April, help yourself to one! Have you ever wondered who started the trend of tucking into chocolate-shaped eggs on Easter Sunday? The first chocolate Easter egg in the UK was introduced in 1873 by the family-owned company, Fry’s It was during the 19th century that the Fry family of Bristol ran the largest chocolate factory in the world and produced the first chocolate egg, in 1873.

Emma Brown Q&A’s 1. Can you tell us a little more about the reasons for your fundraising? a. Sam has been diagnosed with rapidly evolving Multiple Sclerosis, a lifelong condition that affects the brain and nerves. We are trying to raise crucial funds for HSTC stem transplantation for my Sister Sam, the treatment has a high success rate of stopping any further damage to the nerves and halting any further disability, the treatment is not available for Sam on the NHS, need to travel to Mexico, to a specialised clinic, 2. I understand this is a really important cause close to your heart, what would you say has been your biggest fundraising challenge so far? a. The biggest challenge is sharing Sam’s story, over the last year and a half, we have raised over an amazing £18,000, through many online raffles, cake mornings, afternoon teas, and promoting on Facebook and word of mouth. 3. You pushed yourself to jump out of the plane and do a skydive last year to raise funds, how was that for you? a. I faced my biggest fear and jumped a 10,000 feet skydive, which scared the hell out of me and raised over £1,000 through sponsors. I will be doing a 15,000 ft skydive or a bungee jump on the 28th of May this summer to help raise funds.

4. The overall total of £53,000 is a huge challenge but you have done amazing so far! what future events do you have planned that your colleagues may help support you with? a. We are looking to do a big raffle with some amazing prizes, such as afternoon teas, paintballing, go-kart racing, a Bristol Harbour ferry trip, reflections salon £50.00 voucher, Bath races, love to shop vouchers, a Bristol Bears Signed rugby ball or shirt and lots of booze. 28

Georgina Nicholls Q&A’s 1. What inspired you to sign up to run the London Marathon? It’s something that’s been on my bucketlist so I figured the sooner I tried the chance I had of getting a spot one day, I wasn’t expecting to get a charity spot the first time I ever applied though.I applied with British Heart Foundation as it was last April my grandad had heart surgery and the following month we lost his younger brother to heart attack so it is a cause that is very important to my entire family.

more that a

2. How have you been preparing and training? I go to the gym a few times a week, I have walked the distance twice so that I get a feel for just how far that actually is and at my slowest how long it would take me which would be 6hrs 48mins. I also have a few more competitions before London Marathon to help me get used to running in big groups and the difference this can make on a run. I have a half marathon booked for the 12th of March and 2 10k races for the 25th and 26th. 3. The marathon is a massive 26.2 Miles, what time are you hoping to achieve this within? At the minute I have no idea the dream is to be under 4 and a half hours but will be happy with anything under 5 and a half. 4. How can your colleague support you on this journey? I have a massive target of £3000 to raise for the British Heart Foundation. I am running a lucky numbers competition. The numbers 1 -300 are £2 a number and the winner will get £100 the rest going to charity. I also have a Facebook group called “Georgina’s London Marathon Fundraising 2023” where I post a bit about what I’ve been up to and any competitions I am running will also be on there. 5. Have you got any advice for anyone who may wish to take on a similar challenge? Just go for it. You don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow and if you think its worth trying then why not do it? 6. What are you most looking forward to once the race is complete? The sense of accomplishment and being able to have proved to myself that I am capable of anything I want to do. CARCO CHARIT Y UPDATE In previous additions, we have asked for suggestions on Charity or a cause close to your heart. Many charities are close to our hearts for a lot of reasons, but a suggestion we have received is to support the Crohn’s and Colitis charity. Crohn’s & Colitis UK (crohnsandcolitis.org.uk) Crohn’s & Colitis UK’s Bristol, Bath, and North Somerset Local Network (crohnsandcolitis.org.uk) The work carried out by this charity to support people with Crohn’s and Colitis is just amazing. For many, when first diagnosed the charity didn’t even exist and matters relating to this type of condition were somewhat taboo. Fast forward to 2023 and the stigma and embarrassment associated remain but people are far more open to discussing these things. Thankfully through this charity, there is an invaluable support network available to anyone who has been diagnosed as well as their families, and for many this support is priceless. Although we do not have any direct fundraising plans in place, we would love to hear any suggestions you may have. Please email [email protected] with any ideas and together we can help support those living with this disease.

“Recently made our 2nd car purchase here. It’s so nice to feel you have a dealership where you are helped and looked after. Matt Meredith

and his new trainee Theo were amazing. Having suddenly realised that I was not going to fit 3 kids seats (and my husband) in our current car, with my due date approaching I went in desperation to try to find something that would fit our family. Matt was brilliant from the moment I walked in, despite being hormonal and stressed at my situation he reassured me he would find me something and before the baby arrived, within a week I was driving home in a lovely c4 Picasso. I was over the moon with the offer on my car part exchange. Everything was clear and well explained and they were so patient despite me having too noisy toddlers in tow. I was made to feel comfortable and welcome in their showroom. I was also incredibly impressed with the way Matt was guiding his new trainee Theo. It’s clearly an organisation that looks after their people as well as customers. Theo was kind and personable even remembering the name my daughter chose for our new car, I think he will go very far. Thank you Matt and Theo for your hard work and brilliant customer service.

“Amazing experience at Peugeot. Barney especially is a stand-out member of staff, so genuine, patient and decent. We found the most fantastic car there for our daughter. The experience was seamless and professional. We would 110% recommend them. I left my coat behind in my excitement, and Barney even managed to get that sent to my home address. Outstanding, and they went over and above to assist us with all elements of our car purchase and experience. Why can’t every company be like this? Well done to everyone - this is what customer service truly looks like.

STRIVE FOR FIVE!

HHHHH City Motors Dacia/Renault

“I’ve been using City Motors for almost a decade and that’s largely to do with the people. Rhiannon always has my interests at heart and finds me appropriate models, prices etc that suit me. I’ve just had my third car from City Motors and it was as easy as ever. Rhiannon makes sure I’m aware of every detail at each step of the process so I have a good understanding and don’t forget anything (like insurance!). I love my Clio! Erica Howse-Day, Google Review

recommend them highly, they are helpful, efficient & professional. Today I had a slow puncture they fitted me in at short notice and repaired it so quickly, they even let me bring my dog! All the staff were very friendly to both me and my dog! Thank you Chris & Team for the super service!!
