FEAST ON UNCEASING PRAYER

Bread for the Journey … The elder son in the story of the prodigal son, is portrayed as the faithful one who stood faithfully by his Father in obedience and service. The elder son represents those parts of ourselves and lives that are faithful to God. I would like to reflect on three ways we are the faithful elder son and provide suggestions for continued growth. The first way we are the faithful elder son is through fidelity to our religious responsibilities of private prayer, public worship, and study of the Scriptures. The elder son in us recognizes that since God created us, provides for us, and saves us, He deserves our time, attention, and devotion. We are willing to make the necessary sacrifices to give to God what belongs to God. We have to be careful that we do not approach God primarily out of duty, rather than love, even though the two can go together. An excessive sense of duty can take the joy and personal touch out of our encounter with God. Our time with God becomes merely an obligation, instead of a graced opportunity to sincerely give our hearts to Him. May we give our hearts to God in a manner that brings about a deeper trust, intimacy, and conversion of life. The second way we are the faithful elder son is fidelity to our daily responsibilities and service to others. The Elder Son in us takes our responsibilities seriously. We strive to be good and trustworthy family members, friends, and members of the community. We seek to go above and beyond, and give back to God and others through various forms of outreach. We are models of dedication and generosity and seek to make a positive difference. It is important to be mindful of how we treat ourselves and the important people in our lives. We feel guilty unless we are always doing something or serving someone. We end up neglecting our own God given needs and become worn out. Ironically, we spend so much time serving others through tasks, that we do not truly encounter others on a personal level or allow them to encounter us. God calls us to embrace a healthy balance of work, rest, recreation, and relationship, so we can be a loving, joyful, and grateful person. The third way we are the faithful elder son is by living out the will of God. The elder son in us strives to be faithful to the commandments, live out the Gospels, embrace the teachings of the church, and follow the guidance and inspiration of the Holy Spirit. We seek to live according to the mind and heart of Christ instead of by our moral preferences and the surrounding culture. We desire to grow in virtue and holiness and trust that it can happen through the power and grace of God. We have to be careful of becoming judgmental. We become judgmental whenever we allow our spiritual pride to make us look down on others who are not living God’s standard or have not reached our level of faithfulness. We are called to transform our prideful comments and our condemning hearts to words, actions, and prayers of compassion. We are inspired to greater compassion when we stay mindful of our own sinfulness and the powerful ways we have experienced the love and mercy of God. Have a blessed week! Fr. Karl

Este programa está diseñado para personas comprometidas que acepten crecer en su fe y obtener las herramientas necesarias para desempeñar sus ministerios parroquiales. Esta educación es gratis peró los candidatos deben obtener permiso de sus sacerdotes y comprometerse asistir a siete clases al año y un retiro. El programa de formación abarca tres años. Se ofrecerá cuidado de niños der 2-10 años de edad. Al término de los tres años los participantes habrámo obtenido el adiestramiento para colaborar más activamente en la vida de la iglesia; un reconocimiento por parte del Instituto Pastoral del Suroeste (SEPI) y certificación de Liderzago Pastoral por la Diócesis de Shreveport. El santo Peruano Fray Juan Macías fue dominico. Este santo es reconocido como el amparo de los pobres, patrón de los emigrantes y ladrón del purgatorio. El concepto del purgatorio es un poco difícil de entender. La Iglesia adoptó la creencia en la última purificación de los elegidos (nombrado el Purgatorio) en los siglos XV y XVI en los concilios de Florencia y Trento. Ella se basa en las Escrituras que se refieren en la purificación en el fuego (1 Corintios 3:15; 1 Pedro 1:7) y en la práctica de la oración por los difuntos como aparece en 2 Macabeos 12:46 y Job 1:5. San Juan Crisóstomo dijo: “Si los hijos de Job fueron purificados por el sacrificio de su padre, ¿porqué vamos a dudar que nuestras oraciones por los difuntos puedan hacerle llegar alguna consolación a los que han muerto? Ofrezcamos pues, nuestras oraciones por los difuntos. Los que están en purgación necesitan nuestro apoyo en la oración. Pan para el camino…. El hijo mayor en la historia del hijo pródigo, es retratado como los fieles, uno aquel que estuvo fielmente por su Padre en la obediencia y servicio. El hijo mayor representa aquellas partes de nosotros mismos y de la vida que son fieles a Dios. Me gustaría reflexionar sobre tres maneras somos el hijo mayor fieles y proporcionar sugerencias para seguir creciendo. La primera forma en que son fieles al hijo mayor es a través de la fidelidad a los deberes de piedad privada de oración, el culto público, y el estudio de las Escrituras. El hijo mayor en nosotros reconoce que como Dios nos creó, ofrece por nosotros, y nos salva, Él merece nuestro tiempo, atención y devoción. Estamos dispuestos a hacer los sacrificios necesarios para dar a Dios lo que es de Dios. Tenemos que tener cuidado de que no nos acercamos a Dios principalmente por deber, más que el amor, a pesar de que los dos pueden ir de la mano. Un excesivo sentido del deber puede tomar la alegría y el toque personal de nuestro encuentro con Dios. Nuestro tiempo con Dios se convierte en una mera obligación, en lugar de una oportunidad de gracia para dar sinceramente a nuestros corazones a Él. Podemos dar nuestro corazón a Dios de una manera que provoca una mayor confianza, la intimidad y la conversión de vida. La segunda forma en que son fieles al hijo mayor es la fidelidad a nuestras responsabilidades diarias y el servicio a los demás. El hijo mayor en nosotros toma en serio nuestras responsabilidades. Nos esforzamos por ser miembros buenos y dignos de confianza de la familia, amigos y miembros de la comunidad. Buscamos ir más allá, y devolver a Dios ya los demás a través de diversas formas de divulgación. Somos modelos de entrega y generosidad y tratar de hacer una diferencia positiva. Es importante ser consciente de cómo tratamos a nosotros mismos ya las personas importantes en nuestras vidas. Nos sentimos culpables a menos que siempre estamos haciendo algo o servir a alguien. Terminamos descuidar nuestro propio necesidades de Dios y nos desgastamos. Irónicamente, pasamos tanto tiempo sirviendo a los demás a través de tareas, que no nos encontramos con otros verdaderamente a nivel personal o que éstos nos encuentran. Dios nos llama a abrazar un balance entre el trabajo, el descanso, la recreación y la relación, por lo que puede ser una persona cariñosa, alegre y agradecido. La tercera forma de ser el hijo mayor es fiel al vivir la voluntad de Dios. El hijo mayor en nosotros se esfuerza por ser fiel a los mandamientos, vivir los Evangelios, abrazar las enseñanzas de la iglesia, y seguir la guía y la inspiración del Espíritu Santo. Buscamos vivir de acuerdo con la mente y el corazón de Cristo y no por nuestras preferencias morales y la cultura circundante. Deseamos crecer en virtud y santidad y confiamos en que le puede pasar a través del poder y la gracia de Dios. Tenemos que tener cuidado de convertirse en crítico. Llegamos a ser crítico cuando permitimos que nuestro orgullo espiritual se mire hacia abajo a los demás que no están viviendo la norma de Dios o no han llegado a nuestro nivel de fidelidad. Estamos llamados a transformar nuestras observaciones orgullosos y nuestro corazón que condenan a las palabras, acciones y oraciones de la compasión. Nos inspira a una mayor compasión cuando nos quedamos conscientes de nuestra propia pecaminosidad y las maneras de gran alcance que hemos experimentado el amor y la misericordia de Dios.
