FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER  April 24, 2016 TRUE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY Can you imagine a world such as the one put before us in today’s scripture readings? Communities of believers everywhere would support and encourage one another and be identified as Christians by the way they love each other. It would be a world with no tears, no death and mourning, no crying out in pain. “Behold, I make all things new,” we hear the Son of God say in the second reading from the book of Revelation (21:5). Is this world of John’s vision only imaginary? Are these faithful followers for whom Jesus prayed only a savior’s dream? Today they are put before us as a worthy goal. How much closer can we come to this vision of a true Christian community in our lives today? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Dear Parishioners, Our Parish Anniversary Committee is beginning to take shape. Please spread the word that there will be a “Homecoming Celebration” of our 125th Anniversary on Sunday, September 25th, at the 12:00pm Mass. This Mass will begin a yearlong observance of our being a community of Faith here in Bay Ridge since September 24, 1891, when Bishop John Loughlin sent Father Martin Loftus to establish a new parish between St. Michael on 42nd Street and St. Patrick on 95th Street. This Tuesday, April 26th, will be the 150th Anniversary of the Redemptorist Congregation’s having received the picture of Our Mother of Perpetual Help. Our parish congratulates our neighbors on 59th Street on this joyful anniversary. I have an appointment on Tuesday to place a railing in our sanctuary for the benefit of those who would feel more secure on the sanctuary steps. At last week’s Project Andrew nine young men came to reflect on the possibility of a call to priesthood. Eight priests also came and shared their vocation stories. Please keep these young discerners in your prayers. Thank you to all who have made a gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal. When tax returns are issued we usually see a spike in participation. I hope you all have a good week. Let’s pray for each other Msgr. Kevin Noone
