In the Library It has been a busy quarter in our Toy library here at CCRC. We’ve added new toys from many different sources. Pop over and visit on the third Thursday until 8pm to see our new props boxes and toys. You can see our selection online if that is your preference (www.ccrctulsa.org). We have a Sweet Shoppe box and a Pizza Restaurant prop box. These are great for dramatic play and the kids really enjoy the variety the props offer.

Welcome...

We are pleased to welcome our new employee, Jessica Smith, from Tennessee. She will be joining our group as a Child Care Consultant. Jessica has worked with childcares for over 10 years. She has experience as a teacher working with most age groups, working to enhance quality child care for children, and with parents. If you need help with any of the following: health and safety, behavior and guidance, room arrangement, or curriculum needs, please call 831-7240 or email [email protected]. Jessica is looking forward to learning more about child care in Oklahoma and working with each of you to improve child care.

Lego Printing Materials: Duplos and/or Legos (only use Legos with 4 years & up) Washable tempera paint Paper plates Heavy paper (construction paper, cardstock, etc.) Directions: 1. Pour a variety of colors of washable tempera paint on the paper plates 2. Have the children dip the Duplos and/or Legos in the paint and print on the paper 3. Discuss the different shapes and designs the different blocks make 4. If desired, roll out butcher paper and have the whole class make a mural for a cooperative process art activity

Ask the Nurse - Poison Ivy The blistering rash of poison ivy is caused by the skin developing an allergic reaction to the oil in the leaves of poison ivy plant. The rash typically occurs within a few hours to days after having contact with the plant, depending on how sensitive you are. The poison ivy plant has a characteristic three leaflets with notched edges. It can grow as a shrub or vine in the grass or on trees and it is found throughout the United States. Once the oil from one of these plants comes into contact with the skin, it does not spread and you can not catch poison ivy by touching someone's rash. It is possible for it to spread if the oil remains under your child's nail or on his clothes. You can also have a reaction to the oil of poison ivy if your pet had contact with the leaves and its fur is contaminated. The rash usually begins as red bumps and blisters that are very itchy and can last for up to one to three weeks. While the best approach to treatment is educating your children to avoid these plants, if your child does have a reaction there are some steps you can take to make him more comfortable, including: 



Quickly wash any areas of your skin that have come into contact with poison ivy. You have about ten minutes to remove the oil before a reaction will develop. Also wash any clothing that has come into contact with the plants to prevent spreading the oil and scrub under your child's fingernails. For mild reactions, you can use calamine lotion, hydrocortisone cream, an oral antihistamine, oatmeal baths and cool soaks. (Continued on next page) 2

More severe reactions will require evaluation by your doctor, who can prescribe an oral steroid or a stronger topical steroid cream. Oral steroids will need to be taken and slowly tapered over two weeks to prevent recurrence of the reaction. Carefully remove poison ivy plants when they are found. Avoid burning them, as the smoke can cause a very severe reaction to anyone who is exposed to it.

A World to Explore Infants and toddlers learn by doing. They are sensory-motor beings. It is important that they have an environment that supports this concept. Infants and toddlers need space to explore where they can use both large and small muscles. They need sensory experiences and cognitive experiences. Infants and toddlers need to hear language and have social interactions. We must get to know individual children through observation so that we can plan activities accordingly. Infants and toddlers with freedom of movement do not need to be taught how to sit, stand, or walk. They will learn these things by themselves when ready. Magda Gerber once said, “Every baby moves with more ease and efficiency if allowed to do it at his own time and in his own way, without our trying to teach him. Fun With Food Popsicles!

Homemade popsicles are easy and fun to make with all ages! This creative snack can be healthy and keep the kids cool in the hot summer days. Ingredients: Popsicle molds Popsicle sticks (if molds do not come with plastic sticks) Creamy Pops: 1 banana (1) 6 ounce container of vanilla yogurt Berries Fruit Pops: 10 ounces of juice (your child’s favorite) Fruit (pick 2-strawberries, blueberries, pineapple, blackberries) Directions: For both types of pops- In a blender mix all the ingredients together until smooth. Then pour into molds until frozen.

Una vez que el aceite de una de estas plantas entra en contacto con la piel, que no se propague y no se puede coger la hiedra venenosa al tocar la erupción de alguien. Es posible que se extienda si el aceite se mantiene bajo las uñas de su hijo o en su ropa. También puede tener una reacción al aceite de la hiedra venenosa si su mascota ha tenido contacto con las hojas y su pelaje está contaminado. La erupción generalmente comienza como pápulas rojas y ampollas que son muy picor y pueden durar desde una a tres semanas. Mientras que el mejor enfoque para el tratamiento es educar a sus hijos para evitar estas plantas, si su hijo tiene una reacción, hay algunos pasos que puede tomar para hacerlo más confortable, incluyendo: 

lavar rápidamente cualquier área de la piel que ha estado en contacto con la hiedra venenosa. Tiene unos diez minutos para eliminar el aceite antes desarrollará una reacción. También lave toda la ropa que haya estado en contacto con las plantas para evitar la propagación del petróleo y matorrales debajo de las uñas de su hijo.



Para las reacciones moderadas, puede usar una loción de calamina, crema de hidrocortisona, un antihistamínico oral, baños de avena y compresas frías.



Las reacciones más graves requerirán la evaluación de su médico, quien puede prescribir un esteroide oral o una crema con esteroides tópicos más fuertes. Los esteroides orales necesitarán ser tomadas y disminuyan lentamente durante dos semanas para evitar la recurrencia de la reacción. 17
