The most practical shapes of tables in the early stages were big and rectangular which made it the pinnacle of any household, giving people the well-organized position of being able to view most of the room and whomever is inside.

‫حركة‬ ‫باوهاوز‬ Bauhaus (in German literally translates to “construction house”) was originated as a German school of the arts in 1919 that is dedicated to uniting all branches of arts under one roof. Bauhaus aims to bring art back into contact with our everyday life. Thus, typical Bauhaus designs evident in painting, architecture, interior design and furniture focus on balanced forms and abstract shapes.

Accordingly, Bauhaus architecture in this style is characterized by harmoniously balanced geometric shapes and an emphasis on function. It features open plans and lots of glass. Similarly, Bauhaus interiors and furniture are renowned for their simplicity and openness, the “Wassily Chair” is a good example.

Today, Bauhaus is often credited as the catalyst for modern architecture and furniture and as an important influence on mid-20th century painting and sculpture. Some buildings including “Bauhaus Dessau”, a UNESCO World Heritage Site (picture), have been turned into tourist destinations and house museums, while many major modern art museums incorporate the works of Bauhaus art into their permanent displays and popular exhibitions.

‫تاريخ‬ ‫األواني الزجاجية‬ In 5000 BC, the very first piece of glass was suggested to have been made by Phoenician merchants in Syria as told by the ancient Roman historian Pliny. But per the archaeological evidence, the first man made piece of glass was discovered in Eastern Mesopotamia around 3500 BC, and the first vessels of glass dates back to 1500 BC in and around Egypt. Following this, Egypt, Syria, and the other countries along the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea were centers for glass manufacturing.

‫أشي َر إلى أن أول قطعة زجاج على‬ ِ ‫ قبل الميالد‬5000 ‫سنة‬ ‫صنِعَ ت على أيدي تجار فينيقيين‬ ُ ‫اإلطالق في سوريا قد‬ ‫كما ادعى ذلك المؤرخ الروماني القديم “ بلينيوس” ولكن‬ ‫اكتش َفت أول قطعة زجاج مصنوعة‬ ‫حسب األدلة األثرية فقد‬ ِ ‫ قبل الميالد‬3500 ‫بيد اإلنسان في شرق بالد الرافدين حوالي‬ ‫ قبل الميالد في مصر‬1500 ‫وتعود أول األواني الزجاجية إلى سنة‬ ‫ وتبعا لهذا فإن مصر وسوريا والدول الممتدة‬. ‫وما حولها‬ ‫على طول الساحل الشرقي للبحر األبيض المتوسط كانت‬ .‫مركز صناعة الزجاج‬

During this era, it was very grueling and time-consuming to manufacture glass. Glass melting furnaces were small and the heat they produced was hardly enough to melt glass. But in the 1st century BC, Syrian craftsmen invented the blow pipe. This revolutionary discovery made glass production easier, faster and cheaper. With this discovery, vessels could be made by blowing the glass as opposed to forming them around a core, which meant that the possible shapes of vessels seemed infinite.

‫كانت صناعة الزجاج طيلة هذه الحقبة عمال مضنيا يستغرق‬ ‫وقتا طويال فقد كانت أفران إذابة الزجاج صغيرة وكانت‬ ‫الحرارة التي تنتجها بالكاد كافية إلذابته ولكن في القرن األول‬ ‫قبل الميالد اخترع الحرفيون السوريون أنبوب النفخ وقد‬ ‫هز هذا االكتشاف صناعة الزجاج إذ جعل إنتاجه أيسر وأسرع‬ ‫ ولقد أمكن بهذا االكتشاف صناعة أواني بالنفخ‬.‫وأقل ثمنا‬ ‫في الزجاج بدال من تشكيله حول إطار وهذا ما كان يعني أن‬ .‫األشكال الممكنة لألواني صارت النهائية‬

The technique of free blowing involves the blowing of air into a molten portion of glass at the end of the blowpipe using short puffs. This process has the effect of forming an elastic skin on the inside of the glass blob which matches the exterior, which is caused as it cools after being removed from the furnace. The glass-worker can then rapidly inflate the molten glass to form a coherent blob and then work it into a desired shape.

It was during the reign of the Roman Empire, that through the discovery of glass blowing that glass became much more of a household object. Blowing vessels was more efficient than core-forming, and so glass became available to the wider population. 62
