Dear Families and Friends of St. Margaret Mary,

I

t is that time of year again. The Lomita Fair is fast approaching. Last year was my first experience of the LF and it was indeed impressive. The Monday before, things begin to appear until by Friday our enormous parking lot is full and ready to go, as if by magic. But I know how much work it took. The Lomita Fair is a true testament to the marvelous spirit of cooperation and generosity present here at St. Margaret Mary’s parish. Having said that, I want to make an appeal for this year. We urgently need volunteers and we desperately need people to both sell and buy the raffle tickets. Perhaps you did not know that it takes about 1,200 volunteers to staff the fair. Our school does wonders but can only supply a quarter of that number. So, WE NEED YOU TO VOLUNTEER. At least for a few hours on one day. PLEASE! (Picture me getting down on my knees begging each one of you to help this year). You may have a long history of volunteering and believe me, we are grateful, but PLEASE consider volunteering one more year. Or this may be your first opportunity to help—PLEASE sign up and enjoy the camaraderie and fun. You will not only be serving the best of causes, you will be making friends! Now, as you may know, the raffle is consistently the biggest money-maker but last year, unfortu-

nately, the numbers were way down—so this year we really do need your help. PLEASE sell as many raffle tickets as you can to family, friends, neighbors etc. The monies collected are vitally necessary in keeping several of our most important ministries going, like our Social Service outreach to the poor. Without the Lomita Fair raffle we might be forced to curtail or even close down other ministries. For these worthy causes I don’t mind begging. Besides, there is an important spiritual rule to remember—God is never out-done in His generosity. The more generous we are, the more generous He is to us. In short, if you want to receive—give. Or in our case, volunteer and promote our raffle. God will indeed reward all your efforts, magnifying and multiplying them, by pouring countless blessings in your lap. With prayers and gratitude, Fr. Estimadas familias y amigos de Santa margarita María, Es ese tiempo otra vez, La Feria de lomita se acerca rápidamente. El año pasado fue mi primera experiencia de la Feria y fue realmente impresionante. El lunes anterior, empiezan las cosas a aparecer hasta el viernes, nuestro enorme estacionamiento se llena y listo para funcionar, como por arte de magia. Pero yo sé cuánto trabajo se toma. La feria de Lomita es un verdadero testimonio del maravilloso espíritu de cooperación y generosidad presente aquí en la parroquia de Santa Margarita María. Dicho esto, quiero hacer un llamado para este año. Urgentemente necesitamos voluntarios y necesitamos desesperadamente que las personas compren y vendan los boletos de la rifa. Tal vez no sabías que se necesitan cerca de 1,200 voluntarios para el personal de la feria. Nuestra escuela hace maravillas, pero solo puede completar una cuarta parte de ese número. Por lo tanto, TE NECESITAMOS COMO VOLUNTARIO. Al menos unas cuantas horas al día. ¡POR FAVOR! (Imagine ponerme de rodillas rogándole a cada uno de ustedes por su ayuda este año). Es posible que tenga una larga historia de voluntariado y créeme, estamos muy agradecidos, pero POR FAVOR considere ofrecerse como voluntario un año más. Ahora, como ustedes saben, la rifa es consistentemente la mayor entrada de dinero, pero el año pasado, desafortunadamente, el número fue muy bajo— por lo tanto este año realmente necesitamos de su ayuda—POR FAVOR vendé tantos boletos de la

rifa como puedas a tu familia, amigos, vecinos etc. El dinero recaudado es vitalmente necesario para mantener varios de nuestros ministerios más importantes en marcha, tales como nuestro Servicio Social al alcance de los pobres. Sin la rifa de la Feria de Lomita podríamos vernos forzados a recortar o incluso a cerrar otros ministerios. Por estas causas nobles no me importa la mendicidad. Además, hay una regla espiritual importante para recordar—la generosidad de Dios no tiene límites—cuanto más generosos seamos, más generoso es El con nosotros. En resumen, si quieres recibir—da—. O en nuestro caso, voluntariar y promover nuestra rifa. Dios recompensará todos tus esfuerzos, magnificando y multiplicándolos, vertiendo innumerables bendiciones en tu regazo. God’s Word Today "Ask something of me and I will give it to you." The first reading tells us that this is what God said to Solomon in a dream. Solomon asks not for long life or riches. He asks for an understanding heart. If God appeared to you and said the same thing, what would your response be? There is a certain wisdom in placing this first reading side by side with today's Gospel. Once again we hear parables about the kingdom of heaven. Jesus used images of great wealth--buried treasure, a pearl of great price, and a large catch of fish--to describe the kingdom. For the believer, the kingdom of heaven is the greatest treasure, for to inherit this treasure is to attain eternal life with God. Again, back to the question posed above. What would your response be if God appeared like a genie and gave you one wish? God does appear today, through the living word, and asks us to continue to formulate a response to the question. The formulation of this response is part of what it means to travel the journey of faith. What is the treasure you seek this day? 2014-2015 FAITH FORMATION REGISTRATION Registration for the 2014-15 Faith Formation Classes is now open.. Registration forms for elementary, junior high and high school confirmation can be picked up at the RE or Parish Offices or downloaded from the parish website. Current and New students need to register. Remember, it is an Archdiocesan requirement to have two consecutive years of religious education in order to receive sacraments. Completed registration forms and fees must be hand delivered to the RE office. A copy of the Baptismal Certificate must accompany all NEW registrations. Even if a child was baptized at St. Margaret Mary Alacoque Parish, a copy of each necessary certificate(s) must be included for all children who are registering for Faith Formation for the very first time.

EL CAMBIO DE VALORES Por Humberto Beltrán.

Muchas veces hemos oído hablar de los reinos de la tierra. La palabra reino trae a nuestra imaginación palacios, cortes, lujo real, funcionarios, ejércitos y muchas cosas unidas al poder de gobernar a la humanidad. Hablando a la gente que le seguía, Jesús usa la misma palabra reino, pero en otro sentido. Habla de un Reino muy diferente a los reinos conocidos del mundo. Se refiere esta vez al Reino de los Cielos. Para hacer comprender este reino desconocido para sus oyentes, Jesús usa comparaciones fáciles de entender. Este reino se parece a un tesoro escondido en el campo. El hombre inteligente que lo encuentra, vende todo lo que tiene y compra el campo. Se parece también a un comerciante en perlas que al descubrir una muy fina entre otras ordinarias, también vende todo lo que tiene y la compra. Y también se parece a una red de pescar, que recoge peces buenos y malos cuando la echan al mar. Y cuando la mueven a la orilla, separan los peces buenos y botan los de mala clase. Esta última comparación es aclarada por Jesús todavía más: al final del tiempo, o sea, en el juicio final, los ángeles harán algo semejante con la humanidad: separarán a los buenos de los malos. Parábolas gemelas Las parábolas del tesoro y de la perla son gemelas, con imágenes diferentes: un labrador que descubre un tesoro en el campo y un mercader que encuentra una perla extraordinaria. Las dos parábolas destacan el supremo valor del reino como gran hallazgo; los otros valores son menores. Convertirse es cambiar de valores, es una transvaloración. Por otra parte, el compromiso por el reino no se hace sólo desde la voluntad, sino desde la alegría. Ambas parábolas son una llamada de atención respecto de la primera bienaventuranza. La parábola de la red de pescar describe una escena diaria en el lago de Galilea. El centro de esta parábola no está en el número de peces, sino en la selección que se hace después de la pesca. Es seme-

jante a la parábola del trigo y de la cizaña: apunta a la necesaria convivencia de personas buenas y malas y a que todos tenemos algo de bueno y algo de malo hasta el final de la historia. La verdadera comunidad de los hijos de Dios se descubrirá al final, cuando estemos libres de toda clase de esclavitudes: mentiras, injusticias, muerte y pecado. La selección equivale a evaluación, a revisión de vida, a saber elegir, a discernir. Como un buen maestro, Jesús quiso estar seguro de que los oyentes le habían entendido. Por eso les preguntó: “¿Entienden bien todo esto?” ellos respondieron: “Sí”. No había por allí muchos letrados, pero Jesús hablaba para los sabios y para los ignorantes. El Reino de que Cristo habla y que, según dijo él en otra ocasión, “no es de este mundo”, sí está en el mundo y comienza en este mundo. No es de este mundo porque no es un poder político, una potencia ni una estructura. Es mucho más. Ese Reino no está arriba de nosotros, sino en medio de nosotros. No lo alcanzamos sólo al morir, sino cuando comenzamos a vivir en comunión con Cristo y con los demás. Si observamos un poco el mundo que nos ha tocado vivir, nos quedaríamos asombrados. Hay egoísmo. Hay envidias. Hay odios. Hay mucha, mucha avaricia. Hay impureza en al conciencias, en los cuerpos y en las lamas. Hay injusticias graves en la humanidad. Falta amor. Falta sentido fraternal entre gente que están obligadas a vivir juntas: en la familia, en el trabajo, en la escuela. Y ¿Por qué no?, en ocasiones hasta en la iglesia. ¿Será así el Reino de Dios? No seremos tan pesimistas que no veamos que el Reino de Dios ya ha comenzado: donde quiera que los cristianos se aman de verdad, dondequiera que oren con fe, donde quiera que acuden en ayuda de los necesitados.

Reflexión Los seguidores de Cristo debemos tener en nuestro plan de vida buscar este reino, un reino que no se da sin amor, sin justicia y sin verdadero celo por las cosas de Dios.

Together in Mission is a wonderful way for each of us and our Parish Community to reach out to our Catholic family throughout the Los Angeles Archdiocese who need our help and share the many blessings that we have been given at St. Margaret Mary’s.
