Lecturas de hoy: Ba 5:1-9; Sal 126:1-6; Fil 1:4-6, 8-11; Lc 3:1-6 ORIGINADO EN LA HISTORIA ¿Notaste que la lectura de hoy del Evangelio comienza con lo que parece ser una lección de historia? El principio de la lectura planta a Juan Bautista en la historia. En otras palabras, fue en lo ordinario de la vida diaria que Dios eligió introducirse en la historia. Esto señala un hecho importante sobre el Adviento. En el Adviento sin dudas celebramos la venida del Señor en Belén y ansiamos su venida al fin de los tiempos. Pero quizás lo que es más importante es que reconocemos que Dios se introduce en nuestras vidas, nuestras historias, aquí y ahora. Cuando cantamos "Oh Ven, Oh Ven, Emmanuel", reconocemos que Emmanuel, "Dios con nosotros", significa exactamente eso: Dios está con nosotros aquí y ahora. REESCRIBIR LA HISTORIA Dedica tiempo a releer el texto del Evangelio de hoy. Imagina usar los nombres de los jefes de hoy: nuestro presidente, nuestros senadores, miembros del congreso, nuestro gobernador y nuestro alcalde o intendente. Esto nos puede ayudar a comprender el hecho de que en el día de hoy, que muchas veces parece rutinario o común, Dios elige entrar en nuestras vidas. Lo único que tenemos que hacer algunas veces es abrir nuestros ojos y reconocer la presencia de Dios a nuestro alrededor. Este puede ser un buen ejercicio para responder al llamado de Juan Bautista: "preparen el camino del Señor" (Lucas 3:4). Prepara el camino del Señor esperando que Dios se introducirá en tu propia historia en cada giro. Vivir previendo la presencia del Señor es sin duda una forma maravillosa de transitar esta vida mientras nos preparamos para la vida por venir. Vivir previendo significa que estamos abiertos a escuchar la voz de Dios todos los días. Estamos abiertos a responder a la voz de Dios ofreciéndonos como personas dispuestas a preparar el camino del Señor para los demás. Esto se halla en el corazón de la vocación cristiana. ***************************ROOTED IN HISTORY*********************** Did you notice that today's Gospel reading begins with what sounds like a history lesson? The beginning of the reading roots John the Baptist in history. In other words, it was in the ordinariness of everyday life that God chose to break into history. This signals an important fact about Advent. In Advent we certainly do celebrate the Lord's coming at Bethlehem and look forward to his coming at the end of time. But perhaps more importantly, we recognize that God breaks into our own lives, our own histories, right here and right now. When we sing "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel," we recognize that Emmanuel, "God-with-us," means exactly that: God is with us right here and right now.

REWRITE THE HISTORY Take the time to re-read today's Gospel text. Imagine inserting the names of today's leaders: our president, senators, members of congress, our state's governor, and our mayor or town manager. This might help us grasp the fact that it is in our own day and time, too often seen as humdrum or ordinary, that God chooses to enter our lives. All we need do sometimes is open our eyes and recognize God's presence all around us. This might be a great exercise to respond to the summons of John the Baptist to "prepare the way of the Lord" (Luke 3:4). Prepare the Lord's way by expecting that God will break into your own history at every turn. Living in expectation of the Lord's presence is certainly a wonderful way to move through this life as we prepare for the life to come. Living in expectation means that we are open to hearing God's voice every day. We are open to responding to God's voice by offering ourselves up as persons willing to prepare the way of the Lord for others. This is at the heart of the Christian vocation.
