A MESSAGE FROM THE BISHOP BISHOP MURPHY CALLS FOR PRAYER AND PENANCE FOR PEACE IN THE MIDDLE EAST Sunday Pope Francis addressed the hostilities between Israel and Hamas, which has been launching rockets into Israel. He recalled the meeting of prayer held in the Vatican last month with President Peres of Israel and President Abu Mazen of the Palestinian Authority. And once again the Holy Father called us all to be instruments of peace by constant prayer for peace in the Middle East. He prayed the Lord help us to “have the courage to say ‘No More War’! Give us the courage to take concrete actions to build peace; to transform our weapons into instruments of peace, our fears into trust and out tensions into forgiveness.” We are one with the Holy Father in his appeal and in his prayers. I urge all our pastors and all our faithful to be united once more in a renewed commitment to prayer for peace in the Middle East! May I add a reflection of my own born of some experience with Middle Eastern issues and of my commitment as a priest and bishop for all the many ways the Catholic Church seeks to offer her good offices for peace based on justice, freedom ,human dignity and the safety and security of people and nations? If one were to ask what would motivate Israel and her leaders to launch an attack on Gaza, one would be hard pressed to find any reason whatsoever. Gaza is sadly a place where poor Palestinians suffer and many families, some Christian, mostly Muslim, live in poverty and uncertainty about the future. There is no ”gain”, material, political or moral, for Israel to begin an attack on a poor people who rightly seek freedom, security and justice for themselves and their families but will not achieve it through rocket attacks on Israel by Hamas. Why does Hamas launch these attacks that send rockets indiscriminately into Israeli cities and villages? They know that by themselves they cannot wage a successful war against Israel. Yet on June 30 Hamas significantly escalated its attacks against civilians in a constant but haphazard and indiscriminate way. This constant barrage of rockets against Israeli citizens, not against Israel military installations, would seem quixotic. In fact it simply sows seeds of terror in cities and villages in Israel thus seeking to wreak havoc and destruction, not on military targets but on innocent men, women in children in Israeli cities and neighborhoods. How would we react if an outside force did that to us here at home? No one should have to live in fear in their own homes and communities. Rightly some can point to the aggressiveness of individuals in the Israeli forces in the way they have and all too often continue to harass Palestinians. Rightly we need to say to Israel as well as to the Palestinians that they can and they should move beyond the current impasse. Both sides can and should be ready to become not enemies but neighbors to each other and to all the peoples and nations which surround them. I am as aware as anyone of the history and of the distrust and enmity that has so marked that history. Yet it cannot go on forever. We should never forget that this latest conflict is not between Hamas and Israel alone. There are too many innocent Palestinians to consider, too many innocent Israelis who suffer as well. In the meantime, Egypt has been acting as a broker and has proposed a truce. Israel accepted the proposal. The President of the Palestinian Authority, Abu Mazen, did as well. Unfortunately he has no control over Hamas which refused to accept a truce. It becomes clearer and clearer that the leadership in other Arab countries understand the importance of calling a halt to this conflict. Israel does as well. Only Hamas wishes to continue their indiscriminate rocket launching against the Israeli people. The response of Israel has been to warn the people living in northeast Gaza to leave their homes prior to their response with Israeli rockets. Palestinian homes and innocent civilians have been harmed precisely because these homes are launching pads for Hamas’ rockets. Hamas is using the people of Gaza as a shield to protect their weapons while Israel is using its weapons to protect their citizens. This violence cannot go on. Wiser heads and true peacemakers must prevail. The Holy Father is right. We cannot continue this conflict without new efforts, new determination, new commitment for the principals and their allies to move beyond these flare ups toward a real and permanent solution that will give Israel her sovereignty within safe borders, recognized and respected by all and the people of Palestine a sovereign nation with viable borders, recognized and respected by all. Following the Holy Father’s initiative announced last Fall for a day of prayer, I am designating 4 October, the Feast day of St. Francis of Assisi as a day of prayer and penance for peace in the Middle East. In the weeks ahead we will be preparing materials for all the parishes to come together on the feast of the Poverello to be one in prayer for this noble cause. In the meantime I invite us all to make this one of our daily intentions. Join me in Prayer. Join me in Hope. Join me in a new commitment to pray for peace built upon mutual respect, justice, freedom and a shared desire to live as neighbors by all who live in the land we all call holy.

VERITATIS SPLENDOR ADDRESSED BY THE SUPREME PONTIFF POPE JOHN PAUL II TO ALL THE BISHOPS OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH REGARDING CERTAIN FUNDAMENTAL QUESTIONS OF THE CHURCH'S MORAL TEACHING (Continued from the 27 July Sunday Bulletin)

7. "Then someone came to him...". In the young man, whom Matthew's Gospel does not name, we can recognize every person who, consciously or not, approaches Christ the Redeemer of man and questions him about morality. For the young man, the question is not so much about rules to be followed, but about the full meaning of life. This is in fact the aspiration at the heart of every human decision and action, the quiet searching and interior prompting which sets freedom in motion. This question is ultimately an appeal to the absolute Good which attracts us and beckons us; it is the echo of a call from God who is the origin and goal of man's life. Precisely in this perspective the Second Vatican Council called for a renewal of moral theology, so that its teaching would display the lofty vocation which the faithful have received in Christ, the only response fully capable of satisfying the desire of the human heart. In order to make this "encounter" with Christ possible, God willed his Church. Indeed, the Church "wishes to serve this single end: that each person may be able to find Christ, in order that Christ may walk with each person the path of life".

"Teacher, what good must I do to have eternal life?" (Mt 19:16) 8. The question which the rich young man puts to Jesus of Nazareth is one which rises from the depths of his heart. It is an essential and unavoidable question for the life of every man, for it is about the moral good which must be done, and about eternal life. The young man senses that there is a connection between moral good and the fulfilment of his own destiny. He is a devout Israelite, raised as it were in the shadow of the Law of the Lord. If he asks Jesus this question, we can presume that it is not because he is ignorant of the answer contained in the Law. It is more likely that the attractiveness of the person of Jesus had prompted within him new questions about moral good. He feels the need to draw near to the One who had begun his preaching with this new and decisive proclamation: "The time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand; repent, and believe in the Gospel" (Mk 1:15). People today need to turn to Christ once again in order to receive from him the answer to their questions about what is good and what is evil. Christ is the Teacher, the Risen One who has life in himself and who is always present in his Church and in the world. It is he who opens up to the faithful the book of the Scriptures and, by fully revealing the Father's will, teaches the truth about moral action. At the source and summit of the economy of salvation, as the Alpha and the Omega of human history (cf. Rev 1:8; 21:6; 22:13), Christ sheds light on man's condition and his integral vocation. Consequently, "the man who wishes to understand himself thoroughly–and not just in accordance with immediate, partial, often superficial, and even illusory standards and measures of his being–must with his unrest, uncertainty and even his weakness and sinfulness, with his life and death, draw near to Christ. He must, so to speak, enter him with all his own self; he must 'appropriate' and assimilate the whole of the reality of the Incarnation and Redemption in order to find himself. If this profound process takes place within him, he then bears fruit not only of adoration of God but also of deeper wonder at himself". If we therefore wish to go to the heart of the Gospel's moral teaching and grasp its profound and unchanging content, we must carefully inquire into the meaning of the question asked by the rich young man in the Gospel and, even more, the meaning of Jesus' reply, allowing ourselves to be guided by him. Jesus, as a patient and sensitive teacher, answers the young man by taking him, as it were, by the hand, and leading him step by step to the full truth. (To be continued . . .)

Long Way to Go 43. But there is still a long way to go. For there is still too much disparity in the possession of material goods, too much reason for hostility among various groups, because of opinions on the right to property (opinions sometimes unsound, sometimes not entirely just) held by those who desire unfair advantages and benefits for themselves. 44. There is also the threat of unemployment, a source of anxiety and unhappiness for many men. And this problem can entail even greater difficulties today, when men are being replaced by all sorts of advanced machines. Of this kind of unemployment, Our predecessor of happy memory, Pius XI, uttered this complaint: "There are," he said, "honest working men almost beyond number who want only an opportunity to earn by honest means that daily bread for which, by divine command, we entreat our Father in heaven. But, instead, they are reduced to idleness and, along with their families, reach the very depths of privation. Their unhappiness touches Our heart; We are constrained to take pity and to repeat the merciful words that came from the heart of our Divine Master when He saw the multitude languishing in hunger: 'I have compassion on the crowd' (Mark 8.2)." 45. Indeed, if we long hopefully—as we should—for the realization of this mutual union among the classes of society, then we must do all that we can to bring it about by public and private endeavor and cooperation in courageous undertakings, that all men, even those of the lowest classes, can obtain life's necessities by their toil and by the sweat of their brow, and that they can provide, in an honorable manner and with some degree of sureness, for their future and that of their families. In addition, contemporary progress has made many conveniences an integral part of everyday life; even the poorest citizens may not be excluded from the enjoyment of these advantages. 46. Moreover, we earnestly exhort all those who have responsible positions in the various areas of human endeavor and on whom the lot of the workers and sometimes their very lives depend, not only that they pay the just wages due to the labors of their workers or simply safeguard their rights so far as wages are concerned, but also that they really consider them as men, or rather, as brothers. And so they should see to it that in some suitable way their employees are able to share more and more in the fruits of their labor and come to regard themselves as partners in the entire enterprise. 47. We give this counsel in order that the rights and duties of employers may more and more be harmonized and reconciled with the rights and duties of employees, and that the associations representing the interests of each "will not seem like armies ready to make or repel attacks in such wise as to make the enemy more resolute or to incite counterattack, or like a river which engulfs every obstacle in its course; but like a bridge which joins opposite shores." 48. It is very important, however, that moral progress should not lag behind economic progress. Anything else would be unworthy of men, not to say of Christians. If the working classes have an abundance of material goods and enjoy all the benefits of civilization while losing or neglecting those higher goods which pertain to the immortal soul, what does it profit them? Paul Joseph Quartet Wednesday, 6 August 2014 7:00 P.M. An enjoyable evening of the music of Jerome Kern will be presented by composer/pianist Paul Joseph and his jazz quartet. You’ll hear inspiring instrumental jazz renditions of classics such as “All the Things You Are”, “Yesterdays”, “The Way You Look Tonight”, and many others. The group has performed extensively during the past several years doing a variety of composer-theme programs. Paul Joseph has previously performed all-original solo piano concerts throughout Long Island featuring works that have received wide critical acclaim in performances by distinguished regional orchestras, ballet companies, and choirs. His dynamic rhythm section consists of drummer Mike Corn and bassist Edgar Mills, both seasoned performers. They will be joined by the mesmerizing violinist Susan Mitchell, one of New York City’s finest musicians (www.pauljoseph.com). Paul Joseph is the brother-in-law of Michael Crouse, and has been a substitute organist at many Masses at Our Holy Redeemer Church. Paul is currently the joint organist and music director at both Saint Ann's and Mary's Nativity in Flushing, Queens, where Michelle Crouse is the cantor. Michelle will be joining the quartet for a couple of Jerome Kern's vocal classics.

PLEASE PRAY FOR:

“His heart was moved with pity for them.” Here we have a story in which it is really clear that Jesus’ disciples and Jesus Himself needed some well-earned rest, and yet when the crowds come to infringe in His personal freedom and His right to rest, He doesn’t think of Himself, He doesn’t complain. Instead, “His heart was moved with pity for them.” What a great example for us! How is our heart? What impels our heart? Is it pity for others as it was the case with Jesus? Jesus’ pity impelled Him to do works of charity for others: He cured the sick among them. He fed the hungry. What about us? DISCURSO DEL PAPA FRANCISCO AL REUNIRSE CON LOS RECLUSOS Penitenciaría local (Isernia), Sábado, 5 de Julio de 2014 Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas, ¡Buenas Tardes! Os doy gracias por vuestra acogida. Y os agradezco por el testimonio de esperanza, que he escuchado de las palabras de vuestro representante. También en el saludo del director me ha impresionado esta palabra: esperanza. Este es el desafío, como dije hace dos semanas en el centro penitenciario de Castrovillari: el desafío de la reinserción social. Y para esto se necesita un itinerario, un camino, tanto en lo externo, en la cárcel, en la sociedad, como en el interior, en la conciencia y en el corazón. Realizar el camino de reinserción, que todos debemos hacer. Todos. Todos cometemos errores en la vida. Y todos debemos pedir perdón por estos errores y hacer un camino de reinserción, para no cometerlos más. Algunos hacen este camino en la propia casa, en el propio trabajo; otros, como vosotros, en un centro penitenciario. Pero todos, todos... Quien dice que no tiene necesidad de hacer un camino de reinserción es un mentiroso. Todos nos equivocamos en la vida y también, todos, somos pecadores. Y cuando vamos a pedir perdón al Señor de nuestros pecados, de nuestros errores, Él nos perdona siempre, no se cansa nunca de perdonar. Nos dice: «desanda este camino, porque no te hará bien ir por aquí». Y nos ayuda. Esta es la reinserción, el camino que todos debemos hacer. Lo importante es no estar inerte. Todos sabemos que cuando el agua se estanca se pudre. Hay un dicho en español que dice: «El agua estancada es la primera en corromperse». No permanecer estancados. Debemos caminar, dar un paso cada día, con la ayuda del Señor. Dios es Padre, es misericordia, nos ama siempre. Si nosotros lo buscamos, Él nos acoge y nos perdona. Como dije, no se cansa de perdonar. Es el lema de esta visita: «Dios no se cansa de perdonar». Nos hace levantar de nuevo y nos restituye plenamente nuestra dignidad. Dios tiene memoria, no es un desmemoriado. Dios no se olvida de nosotros, se acuerda siempre. Hay un pasaje de la Biblia, del profeta Isaías, que dice: Si incluso una madre se olvidara de su hijo —y es imposible— yo no te olvidaré jamás (cf. Is 49, 15). Y esto es verdad: Dios piensa en mí, Dios se acuerda de mí. Yo estoy en la memoria de Dios. Y con esta confianza se puede caminar, día tras día. Y con este amor fiel que nos acompaña, la esperanza no defrauda. Con este amor la esperanza no defrauda jamás: un amor fiel para ir adelante con el Señor. Algunos piensan que hacen un camino de castigo, de errores, de pecados y que sólo es sufrir, sufrir, sufrir... Es verdad, es verdad, se sufre. Como dijo vuestro compañero, aquí se sufre. Se sufre dentro y se sufre también fuera, cuando uno ve que la propia conciencia no es pura, está sucia, y quiere cambiarla. Ese sufrimiento que purifica, ese fuego que purifica el oro, es un sufrimiento con esperanza. Hay algo hermoso, cuando el Señor nos perdona no dice: «Yo te perdono, ¡arréglatelas!». No, Él nos perdona, nos toma de la mano y nos ayuda a seguir adelante en este camino de la reinserción, en la propia vida personal y también en la vida social. Esto lo hace con todos nosotros. Pensar que el orden interior de una persona se corrija solamente «a bastonazos» —no sé si se dice así—, que se corrija solamente con el castigo, esto no es de Dios, esto es un error. Algunos piensan: «No, no, se debe castigar más, más años, de más». Esto no resuelve nada, ¡nada! Enjaular a la gente porque —disculpad la palabra— por el solo hecho de que si está dentro estamos seguros, esto no sirve, no nos ayuda. La cosa más importante es lo que hace Dios con nosotros: nos toma de la mano y nos ayuda a seguir adelante. ¡Y esto se llama esperanza! Y con esta esperanza, con esta confianza se puede caminar día tras día. Y con este amor fiel, que nos acompaña, la esperanza verdaderamente no defrauda. Os doy las gracias por la acogida. Y quisiera... me viene ahora decirlo, porque siempre lo siento, también cuando cada quince días hablo por teléfono a una cárcel de Buenos Aires, donde hay jóvenes y hablamos un poco por teléfono. Os hago una confidencia. Cuando me encuentro con uno de vosotros, que está en un centro penitenciario, que está caminando hacia la reinserción, pero que está detenido, sinceramente me hago esta pregunta: ¿por qué él y no yo? Lo siento así. Es un misterio. Pero partiendo de este sentimiento, de este sentir yo os acompaño. Podemos rezar juntos a la Virgen, nuestra Madre, para que nos ayude, nos acompañe. Es Madre. Avemaría....... Y por favor, ¡oren por mí! ¡Oren por mí!

REFLEXIÓN SEMANAL “Se compadeció de ella [de la muchedumbre]” (Ver Mateo 14:13-21). ¡Qué hermosamente nos representa esta escena el modo de ser de Jesús! Él se compadeció de ellos. En este relato vemos que Jesús y sus discípulos de veras necesitaban descansar y sin embargo cuando la muchedumbre necesitada se presenta, invadiendo su derecho al bien merecido descanso, Jesús no piensa en sí mismo, no se queja. Más bien, se compadece de ellos. ¡Qué gran ejemplo para nosotros! ¿Cómo está nuestro corazón? ¿Somos nosotros personas que nos compadecemos de los necesitados como fue el caso con Jesús? El corazón de Jesús lo impulsó a compadecerse por otros, a hacer obras de caridad por ellos, a sanarlos, a alimentarlos. ¿Qué hay de nosotros? ¿Hacemos un esfuerzo consciente por tener, lo que los líderes de nuestra iglesia llaman la opción preferente para los pobres? Aquí en Nuestro Santo Redentor tenemos la oportunidad de ayudar al pobre con nuestras Obras de Misericordia del Primer Domingo. ¿Está usted alerta a la Obra de Misericordia del mes como se publica en la sección en inglés del Boletín? Otra maravillosa manera en la que podemos ayudar a los pobres es haciendo una promesa a la Campaña de los Ministerios Católicos. ¿Ha hecho usted su promesa ya?
