Chemical Handling SAFETY TIPS

Make sure you have been properly trained in the Hazard Communication Standard. Identify the chemicals you are using. Keep an inventory of all chemicals being stored at your workplace. Be sure to list the quantities, storage location and storage method. Ask your chemical supplier for Safety Data Sheets and keep them on hand for reference.

COMPLIANCE DEPARTMENT #QUALITY, HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL E-FLASH ALERT 2021

Label all containers with the name, concentration, manufacturing date, and information on the hazards associated with the chemical being stored. Identify safe uses of chemicals including handling instructions, necessary protective equipment, mixing instructions and washing instructions in the case of spills or skin contact. Do not eat, drink or smoke near chemicals. Store chemicals with other similar-type chemicals.

COMPLIANCE DEPARTMENT #QUALITY, HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL E-FLASH ALERT 2021

A variety of hazardous chemicals are commonly found in the workplace. It's important to understand the substances that fall under this classification, as they can have an adverse effect on human health and cause harm to property and the environment.

TYPES OF HAZARDOUS CHEMICALS

Preventing chemical hazards Understanding the harmful effects of chemicals and how they can enter the body through various ways. And learn how to prevent these hazards in the workplace. CHEMICAL HAZARDS

Exposure to chemicals can result in harmful health effects, such as:

Headache Injury nervous system

Nausea

Skin irritation

Organ damage

Cancer

EXPLANATION

These effects may be short or long term, depending on the chemical’s toxicity as well as the level and duration of exposure. For example, some solvents may cause immediate but temporary health effects such as headache or skin irritation. Other solvents may cause chronic effects such as cancer or injury to the nervous system if the exposure is over a period of time.

5 Tips Handling Hazardous Waste Improperly handling toxic waste could release harmful chemicals into the air, groundwater, or soil, posing a serious threat to your employees, the environment and any surrounding residences.

Use Proper Storage Materials Use appropriate hazardous waste storage containers. Use sealable containers that prevent the release of harmful chemical substances.

Maintain Appropriate Storage Areas Hazardous waste should be stored in a designated storage area that is inaccessible to unauthorized individuals. The area should be clearly identified as a hazardous waste storage area and should be designed to prevent secondary containment.

Understand Your Requirements Each classification must comply with its own set of regulations and processes with requirements being more stringent and costly the more waste produced.

Train Your Employees At minimum, companies must ensure that all employees are thoroughly familiar with proper waste handling and emergency procedures, relevant to their responsibilities during normal facility operations and emergencies. Keep and up-to-date contingency plan A proper contingency plan is developed by each facility owner or operator and establishes actions that must be immediately implemented during an emergency situation. Your plan should lay out.

EMPLOYER'S ROLE

If hazardous chemicals are used or handled in your workplace, you must: Establish and implement a Management of Hazardous Chemicals Programme in the workplace based on the nature of work and the hazardous chemical(s) used. Conduct a thorough Risk Assessment (RA) before carrying out any work with chemicals. Ensure all relevant safe work procedures (SWP) are in place. Provide the training and information necessary for your employees to work safely and healthily. Communicate with your employees on the hazards involved and the precautionary measures to take if they are exposed to hazardous chemicals. Such hazard communication can be done through safety data sheets (SDS) and container labels of the chemicals.

EMPLOYER'S ROLE

You must: Cooperate with your employer or principal. Practice good housekeeping and personal hygiene. Use the PPE provided properly. Follow safe work instructions and procedures given by your supervisor. Know where to find the information of those chemicals you are working with, as well as the risks and ways to protect yourself. Not carry out wilful or reckless acts that could endanger the health and safety of yourself or others.

How would you handle hazardous chemical? Many common household products contain chemicals that can cause injury or death if they are not handled, stored, or used properly.

1

Purchase the proper personal protective equipment like gloves or goggles. Clean and care for them properly.

2

Aware of the hazardous materials you come in contact with. Learn about the specific characteristics and dangers.
