On the wisdom of the elders. There was a debate that arose about whether the gentile converts must be circumcised. Paul and Barnabas went to the Apostles and elders to consult about the inquiry. That council held in Jerusalem resolved through the inspiration of the Holy Spirit that the gentiles do not need circumcision to be saved. From the early beginnings of the Church, councils were very vital in the life of the faithful. Through the councils, the Holy Spirit’s direction was known and the issues the Church faced were easily resolved and new light and understanding of the Truth is known. Recently, Pope Francis issued to the faithful people of the Church the Papal Exhortation Amoris Laetitia. This document is output of the Synod of Bishops held in the past year. The Bishops, with the special participation of well chosen lay faithful, gathered in order to talk about current situations and issues that confront the Catholic family. From the sessions, enlightened by the Truth of Christ, guided by the wisdom of the Holy Spirit, the Bishops presented to Pope Francis what the Catholic families of today look like and how they are being challenged by the modern world. Pope Francis affirmed in the document that the Catholic teachings on marriage and family life remains the same. But to minister to our brothers and sisters deeply wounded by different marriage and family problems, church ministers are urged to see each person’s situation with charity and mercy. Priests are asked to journey with individuals who needs pastoral care so that he/she will be able to continue to grow in faith and participate in the life of the Church. The goal is to help them persevere towards holiness. o0o On the Paraclete. Jesus told his disciples that he will send the Spirit advocate when he returns to the Father. What does an advocate does? Contrary to what we know, the advocate is not a counsel in a litigation. The Spirit is advocate in the following terms: “1) It is the continued presence of Jesus on earth after Jesus’ departure to heaven (Jn 14:12, 16).

(2) It is a truth-telling spirit (Jn 14:17; 16:13) that testifies on behalf of Jesus and in defense of him.
(3) It reminds them of things that Jesus said (Jn 14:26) and reveals things Jesus was unable to convey (Jn 16:12-14).”(John J. Pilch) We are the Church of the Spirit advocate. We have life through the life that is breathed upon us by Jesus through the Spirit. With the Spirit, we remain, grow and sustain throughout time. The Spirit strengthens us and allows us to persevere in faith until the coming of Christ. When we do not have the Spirit, we cannot persevere. Let us always seek the Holy Spirit to strengthen, inspire and guide us so that we can persevere in faith. o0o Farewell discourse. Jesus continues to bid his goodbye to us. He has to return to the Father in order to fulfill God’s will. But he does not go to leave us behind for good. He is going to prepare a place for us and he is going to take us up with him at the appointed time. Here we strive to know the way to God. Jesus is the way to God. When we strive to love and live Jesus, when he returns, we will be on our way to the Father with Jesus. o0o Congratulations to our kids. First Communion is a very special time. Jesus told us that his body and blood are true food and drink. When we eat the Body of Christ and drink of the Blood of Christ, we grow spiritually. Growing spiritually means the Body and Blood of Christ make us healthy Christians, making our hearts, minds and spirit be configured to Christ. In so doing, we think, talk and act like Christ. How wonderful if all of us, who grow through Christ’s nourishment, become Christ like. Would not the world become heavenly?

Snacks for Packs (S4P) This is a food program administered by Fish and approved by Greater Albany Public Schools (GAPS). It provides packs of nutritious, child-friendly “snacks” to students attending a GAPS school, and who are identified as experiencing food insecurity, to consume on the weekends while away from the schools’ breakfast and lunch programs. Fish would love if the parishioners of St. Mary’s would contribute granola bars and cereal bars. There will be a Fish collection barrel near the back entrance off the playground parking lot to put them in. This will run over the next couple weekends, so if you can’t help out today, please bring some in any time up thru May 8th. Thank you.

Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament The Ascension of the Lord - May 5 "Ascending once again to the Inaccessible Light… you remain still in the 'valley of tears', hidden beneath the appearances of a white host." (Pope Bl. John XXIII) Please join us for Eucharistic Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Adoration is available in the chapel 24 hours every day. For adoration outside of the 24hour regular Thursday schedule, call the office for instructions and to enlist. Everyone is welcome. Spend as much or as little time as you can. Notice of Upcoming Big Events & Crowded Parking Just to give everyone a heads-up about crowded seating and parking conditions for the following dates & events: May 1st - First Eucharist Masses will be at 11 am & 1 pm with receptions after each June 5th - Graduation Mass will be at the 8:30 am Mass with a reception following, then Tetzel will have his Thanksgiving Mass as a new priest at 11 am, with a LARGE reception to follow. On both of these days, participants can expect snug seating and packed parking. With the receptions between, there won’t be the usual clearing of cars between Masses. We recommend those who have the option of attending Saturday evening Mass instead of the ones mentioned above may not only be more comfortable, but would also lighten the load for participants in the big events. Anyone who will be attending the big events - maybe you can work out carpooling? Or - just expect to park a ways out. We hope to block off more parking for those who need to park closer for health reasons. Please respect any cones or signs that are posted. Thank you for your understanding.

Upcoming Special Activities at Masses Crowning of Mary - May 8th The crowning of Mary will take place before the 11am & 1pm Masses on May 8th. Corpus Christi - May 28th & 29th The 8:30am & 1pm Masses will end with a procession around the outside of the church property after. The procession will be around the inside of the church for the Saturday evening Masses and the 11am Mass
