Ernesto Lecuona (1895-1963) Ernesto Lecuona was born in Guanabacoa, a village near Havana, Cuba, in 1895 from a Cuban mother and a Canarian father. His oldest sister Ernestina introduced him to the instrument for which he showed extraordinary talent, playing the accompaniment of silent movies from the age of 7 to financially help his family. From 1904 up to 1907 he studied at the Carlos Peyrellade Conservatory and with Antonio Saavedra, who was a pupil of Ignacio Cervantes’s. In 1910 Joaquin Nin became his teacher and later Hubert de Blanck also taught him. In 1908 he composes his first piece “Cuba and America”, in 1912 his first musical, “Fantasia Tropical” as well as his first ballet, “La comparsa” thus marking the beginning of a prolific life as a composer. The “Suite Andalucía” was composed in 1919. In 1928 Joaquín Nin took him to Paris where he could perform some of his works at the Salle Gaveau and met Maurice Ravel from whom he received some tuition and praise for Lecuona’s “Malagueña”. In 1929 his work “Siboney” was performed in New York to critical acclaim, he was immediately nicknamed “the Cuban Gershwin”. Arthur Rubinstein also heard him play his “Malagueña”, and recognized the genius of the pianist and the “sublime composer”. Lecuona founded several orchestras that performed his songs as well as popular ball-room dances from the Caribbean region, curiously enough he only played classical concerts and never with his ball-dancing orchestras, Armando Orefiche was the official pianist of these orchestras which travelled widely gaining great success. Lecuona also created the Havana Symphony Orchestra. 4

Prestigiosísimos programas de la BBC tales como Woman’s hour, In Tune, CD Review y Performance on 3 han dedicado espacios al trabajo pianístico de Clara. Su repertorio es extenso, cubre la literatura pianística desde el Barroco hasta nuestros días e incluye obras de compositores contemporáneos muchas de las cuales han sido dedicadas a ella, como es el caso del inglés Lawrence Casserley con Vista Clara, el venezolano Federico Ruiz con su Segundo Concierto para Piano y orquesta, el Tríptico Tropical, Nocturno, Zumba que zumba y Carnaval, el argentino Michael Rosas-Cobián con Sin manija (para piano y sonidos electrónicos), la Antología de valses venezolanos para piano y orquesta de cuerdas de Juan Carlos Núñez , “Vals” de Miguel Astor y Preludio No 3 …à contempler longuement…” de Mirtru Escalona Mijares. En 1993 fundó el Festival de Música del Teatro San Martin de Caracas el cual dirigió durante cinco años, vale la pena destacar que hasta ese entonces dicho barrio caraqueño no había contado nunca con manifestaciones de éste tipo. Clara Rodríguez es profesora de piano en el Departamento Juvenil del Royal College of Music de Londres; ha editado partituras de obras pianísticas de autores venezolanos en la casa Spartan Press y también es asesora de repertorio de la Associated Board for The Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM).

Clara Rodríguez La pianista Clara Rodríguez, proveniente de Venezuela, es una de las solistas más aclamadas internacionalmente de los últimos años y su carrera como concertista la ha llevado a muchas ciudades de Europa, Norte y Sur América, Asia y África del Norte. Realizó estudios en el Conservatorio Juan José Landaeta con la pianista Guiomar Narváez; a los diescisiete años ganó por concurso una beca del Consejo Nacional de la Cultura de su país, para seguir estudios de pre y post grado en el Royal College of Music de Londres. Allí estudió con la legendaria pianista inglesa Phyllis Sellick. Clara también ha resultado muy popular entre la audiencia inglesa y se presenta con regularidad en el Wigmore Hall, en el Southbank Centre, en el Barbican Centre, en Saint Martin in-The-Fields y en St John’s Smith’s Square. Clara Rodríguez ha sido nominada Mejor Artista Clásica 2012 por la LUKAS Awards otorgado a los artistas que más contribuyen a la promoción de la cultura latina en el Reino Unido. Aunque su discografía incluye la prestigiosa élite del piano, uno encuentra un número considerable de grabaciones dedicadas a compositores de su natal Venezuela, tales como Teresa Carreño, Moisés Moleiro y Federico Ruiz incluyendo el álbum titulado VENEZULEA en donde se reúnen obras de 18 compositores de ese país. Todos en el sello Nimbus de Inglaterra y por los cuales recibe las mas elogiosas críticas constantemente.

Ernesto Lecuona wrote more than 400 songs, 176 pieces for the piano, 50 theatrical pieces, 31 orchestral works, 15 soundtracks for the cinema, 5 ballets, one trio and an opera. His popularity came to him thanks to his virtuosic, passionate, piano playing, the beauty of his melodies, the force of the rhythms of his compositions but also thanks to the hundreds of interpretations of pieces such as Siboney, Para Vigo Me Voy, Canto Karabali Maria my Own, La comparsa and Malagueña. His creative talent touched intensely a generation of Latin Americans who have not forgotten his music. During the forties and fifties The Metro Goldwyn Mayer and the 20th Century Fox film companies asked him to write the music for many of their films. In 1942 he was awarded an Academy Award for his song “Always in my heart”, from a film produced by the Warner Brothers. In the pieces that I have chosen for this CD, Lecuona pays homage to the Spanish and the Cuban popular music recreating the gestures and deeply rooted traditions of both countries. Strongly felt is the sensibility of the Cuban Black and the Spanish Gypsy idioms that have had such a fundamental influence in the development of what we recognize as being expressly “Cuban” or “Spanish”. The Spanish pieces follow the path of the Arabic/Andalusian tradition of singing to the cities as objects of love. There is also intense religious feeling in pieces such as San Francisco El Grande. His work for the piano introduces elements of remarkable originality. His attempt at integrating Cuban rhythms and traditional melodic expressions with the structures of the late-Romantic writing for the piano is of great interest. The movements of dance, always present, mix themselves with the classical forms echoing the influences of 5

Debussy. Similar hints at the piano compositions of Chopin are again found while in frequent virtuoso passages, typically Lisztian ideas are recognized. The versatility of his compositional style include the depiction of street dances, carnival drum beating parties, processions, as well as the chanting and laments of the Catholic or African religions. In the Cuban dances inspired by the 19th Century salon dances, he captured also the flavour of restrained, quasi-Baroque courtesan elegance. As recognition to his devotion to Spanish culture Lecuona was presented with the gift of a house in Malaga and was made its “adoptive son” amongst many other titles and awards from this area of the South of Spain. Ernesto Lecuona died on November 23, 1963 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, in the Canary Islands. His death was caused by an asthma attack, a disorder which had persecuted him his entire life. una quincena de películas. En 1942 Lecuona recibió un Academy Award por la música de la película “Siempre en mi corazón”. Lecuona fundó la Orquesta Sinfónica de La Habana y la famosa orquesta de baile The Lecuona Cuban Boys Band donde Armando Orefiche era el pianista oficial. He escogido para este CD piezas en donde Lecuona le rinde homenaje a la música popular de Cuba y de España. A través de ellas el compositor recrea los gestos y las raíces musicales de estas dos culturas. En las piezas inspiradas por España hay un profundo sentimiento de recogimiento religioso, como en el caso de “San Francisco El Grande”, o de la alegría y colorido de las fiestas populares españolas como es el caso de la “Suite Andalucía”. Así mismo hay referencias a los ritos de la magia negra o la santería de las comunidades de los ñáñigos o los lucumí en Cuba, en la imitación de los toques de tambor o del ir y venir de las comparsas de carnaval. Las “Danzas Cubanas del siglo XIX”, en donde el danzón tiene un sitio privilegiado, son impresiones de las reuniones de salón de la sociedad cubana de la época y reflejan elegancia y refinamiento en el tratamiento del ritmo y de la melodía. Los mismos no se alejan se su condición de música inspirada por expresiones populares. A Lecuona le fueron otorgados en España numerosos reconocimientos como la Medalla de oro de la Peña Malaguista, “Hijo adoptivo de Málaga” y “Presidente Honorario de la Prensa de Málaga”. Ernesto Lecuona murió el 23 de Noviembre de 1963 en Santa Cruz de Tenerife, en las Islas Canarias. Su muerte fue causada por un ataque de asma, enfermedad por la cual sufrió toda su vida. La “Suite Andalucía” fue compuesta en 1919. Clara Rodriguez is one of the most distinguished of the present generation of international artists. Her programmes have consistently contrasted traditional classical music with the output of South American composers. Recently she has been nominated as Classical Musician of the Year by The Latin UK Awards (LUKAS 2012) which celebrates the contribution of Britain´s one million Latin American, Spanish and Portuguese residents. Caracas born Clara Rodriguez studied with Phyllis Sellick after winning a scholarship from the Venezuelan Arts Council to train in London at the Royal College of Music. There she was the recipient of numerous prizes and performed as a soloist with the RCM orchestras. She studied initially with Guiomar Narváez and has also been a pupil of Paul BaduraSkoda (Vienna), Regina Smendzianka (Poland) and Niel Immelann (London). In Caracas, at the age of sixteen she made her debut playing Mozart’s last piano concerto with the Simón Bolívar Orchestra under the baton of José Antonio Abreu. 8

Clara Rodriguez’s career as a concert pianist has taken her to tour in Europe, India, Egypt, Tunisia and the Americas. Clara Rodriguez has commissioned and premièred many works including Federico Ruiz’s Second Piano Concerto which she recorded with the Orquesta Municipal de Caracas.
