Meet Your Neighbors Drake and Carol Kijowski Happy Valentine’s Day! Congratulations to all whose forever dreams come true. That is not always the case, however. When ready to find love again, it’s not an easy “walk in the park” – especially if we don’t know which park to explore. Meeting a special someone in church who shares your values is a great foundation on which to build a relationship. Meet Carol and Drake Kijowski, an East Meets Mid-west couple in Village C. Carol is a Jersey Girl (with all that that implies!) who grew up on the NJ side of the Hudson River across from NYC. She majored in Home Economics Education at Rutgers University and taught in Narragansett, RI, and Westwood, MA, before having her first two children. In 1982, she found herself a single mom living in Sayreville, NJ, the town she grew up in. She met Drake at church where both were very active and held many volunteer positions over the years. Within two years they were married and went on to have their third child together. Carol likes to be creative, whether it is sewing, knitting, counted cross-stitch, water color painting, designing jewelry, or

just decorative crafts. She also enjoys both singing and listening to music. Drake is originally from the Chicago area suburb of Hammond, IN. This devoted Boilermaker earned his

Chemical Engineering degree at Purdue University, followed by an MBA there. He admitted to considering

Indiana U, Purdue’s arch rival, but loyalties run deep. His career took him to NJ and, therefore, the church

where he met Carol. She took some time off to raise three children and returned to the workplace as an

Optometrist’s assistant until she retired. Drake continues to work remotely for a major gas and electric utility in NJ as a Manager in natural gas supply.

Although they closed on the contract for their home on Kirby Drive in Oct., 2021, the final physical move

from NJ didn’t occur until a few months ago in Nov., 2022. Their son Jon teaches in the Ft. Mill school system. His wife Amy was also a teacher but currently gives full-

time care to their pre-schooler. Their older daughter Sarah is a Pharmacist in Bordentown, NJ, and lives close

by her sister Kristen, who is a hospital coder in Freehold, NJ. The K’s are settling in with boxes left to unpack and look forward to spoiling their grandson. Both are

exploring the many activities available in the Orchards. Drake is already playing pinochle and plans an

eventual dive into the Pickleball mania here. Carol has joined a knitting group and is busy turning a bedroom

into her special craft room, which will be devoted to all manner of needlework, watercolors, and other crafts. Their early travels were spent in a camper, crossing the USA with the kids, making great memories. Now, it’s

cruising. They’ve hit the high seas in the Med, Greece and Turkey, Baltic, Panama Canal and closer to home in

Canada and Bermuda. The Danube River will be next. Carol was the smart one, retiring in 2021. Drake’s set on

retirement sometime this year. Church and family – that’s the heart of the story. It’s even written on their wall.

FRANKLY SPEAKING Where Did Piggy Go? Are you familiar with the new ways of paying bills without writing checks? Of course you are! But I’m not.So . . . we have pay-pal, Apple pay, money orders, on-line banking, and so on. But Venmo, Zelle, and others are completely strange to me. At first, I thought these names looked like some new diseases I hadn’t heard of or a side effect from COVID. I get $2.00 bills from the bank and use them as tips in the coffee shop, restaurants, barber shop, and I also give them to my grandkids. But recently at the drug store while picking up my order, the young clerk said that will be seven cents. I laughed and said, “Are you sure?” “Yes sir,” she said. Well, I put my credit card away and decided to give her cash. However, the only cash I had was a $2.00 bill. The young lady got so excited and said she had never seen one before. As she was holding the bill a puzzled look appeared on her face. “What’s wrong” I said. “I don’t know where to put it. There isn’t a slot for two-dollar bills,” she continued. I suggested that she ask her manager or just slip it under the money tray for the moment. She did give me my $1.93 back after spending a moment figuring how to make change. I tell you all this because I miss Piggy! Yes, the piggy bank (although still available on Amazon) has slowly lost its prominent place on end tables, children’s bedrooms, and desktops across America.Come on, at one point didn’t we all have a piggy bank? If you didn’t have one, surely you knew someone who did. The piggy banks still come in colors like pink for a girl or blue for a boy. Some, when full, you don’t have to break the bank to get the money out. There is a removable plug on the pig’s belly that allows you to get your money and start over again. It was, and in some cases still is, a good way to save money and learn how to use it as a child growing up. Paper route money, allowances, Uncle Joe who always gave you $5.00 on your birthday and so on always had a place in Piggy. I think it is time to bring Piggy back. Come to think about it, what do you call it when your grandchild jumps on your back for a ride. It’s a piggyback isn’t it? I can see the logo on T-shirts across America – BRING PIGGY BACK. Let’s do it! Get those $2.00 bills ready and buy that little piggy bank. Next month we can talk about how the tooth fairy gets paid. T-shirts with a missing tooth . . . Just kidding . . . oink oink Frank DeLuise December February January 2023 2023 2022

line.

Photo 4 planted close to a house and is

an example of how growth

pattern changes using the

“crepe murder” technique. All

branches were cut completely

at the trunk. New growth

sprouts everywhere, including

some branches that still touch

the house.

As a member of the Landscape Committee, I am familiar with the BrightView maintenance schedule.

Paired with the maintenance schedule, I plan to provide suggestions and timely tips for our personal

care for our private home landscape in this column. My suggestions are for the do-it-yourselfers.

Hence the title is “Practically” Advice. My choice of research websites includes the Clemson Home

and Garden Information Center, the Arbor Day Foundation, and the NC and SC Horticulture sites. Crepe Myrtles are hardy enough to be pruned any time. But now to mid-March pruning should

ensure good blooms. Our young trees are still in “training. Hand pruners, long pruners or hand saws

are adequate. A general rule for all landscape planting and trimming is to avoid any plant material

that touches the house. This is to avoid pest infiltration into the home and prevent siding damage. I

provide some photos on how a planned training may work and how go about pruning. Shaping trees

is the homeowner’s choice: above the roofline or to provide shade at the front window. There are

several how-to videos that you can find on the web if needed. To raise the canopy, it will be necessary to remove lots of lower branches. Do not be afraid to trim

30 to 50% of material. These trees are hardy. During the summer, some small branches will appear

on the trunks and they can easily be pinched off by hand. The trees in the Grove parking lot are an

extreme example of adding height. The trees in the common areas seen south of the circle on

Carolina Orchards Blvd are ideal for now. It is also important to cut out any crossover branches in

the middle. If you need your tree professionally trimmed, it may be a little late to schedule for this year, but

consider BrightView Connect when you are getting estimates, as an option in the future. Next month I will provide more information on fertilization and pesticides to promote flowering to prevent certain diseases to Myrtles and shrubs. By Mary Ann Couture
