Drought tolerance is an especially important quality for Florida lawns because our winter months are our dry season. W

hen Chris Druschel, lead project designer and showroom manager for S&W Kitchens in Winter Park, met with potential clients, Karla and Bob Shultz, he was warned that the remodel of their 1990’s kitchen would be a designer’s challenge. They’d had other remodeling companies look at it, and none of them could design what Karla wanted. Her dream was to have a real cook’s kitchen, complete with just about every appliance one could think of, and plenty of room to have family members alongside her, creating fabulous meals. The main problem was space. The existing space was cramped, and the appliances were awkwardly arranged. Additionally, the client did not want to replace the floor tile that was original to the house, and she wanted to keep some of the appliances that she already owned. Chris was up to the challenge! As is normal procedure for S&W Kitchens’ designers, a lot of time was spent working closely with the client to understand their needs and wants, then drawing and tweaking plans until every detail was specified to the client’s satisfaction. To open up the space, a wing wall was taken down, and a butler’s pantry with a wide opening into the kitchen was added. The entire floor plan of the kitchen was changed, allowing the appliances to be installed ergonomically. Great care was taken in the design and installation so that the original tile flooring wasn’t damaged. “The warm neutral tone of the floor tile helped to set the color palette,” Chris said, “and although the cooler tones, like gray, are more prevalent, this has started to change. We’re seeing the trend toward warmer tones, like golds and taupes.”

Chris specified a rich genuine cherry wood, finished in a warm Smokey Hills stain, for the center island base, the pair of open wall-mounted shelves, and the range hood. This contrasts nicely against the pale taupe-painted cabinets and the exotic Taj Mahal quartzite stone countertops. This real cook’s kitchen also boasts two sinks, one for food prep, and the other for dish washing, and a pot-filler faucet over the stove, all with uniquely designed knurled Brizo faucets. Chris cleverly echoed the knurled design in the cabinet pulls. High-end details and finishes were installed in the Shultz dream kitchen. All the cabinetry was solid wood, made by Omega in the USA, and customized to the inch in order to fit the space but still satisfy the client’s specific needs. The butler’s pantry became a place not only for extra storage, but also for an additional sink and more counter space. It became a home to some of her many appliances, like the beverage cooler, ice maker, and her new Wolf steam oven. Chris felt that the backsplash in the butler’s pantry should “dress it up,” so they installed beautiful Walker Zanger hand glazed, crackle-finished, arabesque tile above the sink. The completed kitchen did not yet signal the end of Chris’ or S&W Kitchens’ involvement, although every detail of the contract-specified new kitchen and butler’s pantry had been met. Because his client was unfamiliar with her new Wolf steam oven, Chris invited a representative from Sub Zero/Wolf to come to her home, and while they enjoyed a little wine and lovely charcuterie, the rep gave her a hands-on tutorial on all the fun features of her new appliance. Although a personal tutorial may not be necessary for most homeowners, a real cook, like Karla Shultz, would appreciate this extra effort. Building Pools with Creativity and Integrity

A

fter working for 10 years with a company that left Todd Paldin feeling unfulfilled, he took a leap of faith from a friend’s recommendation and started a new career with Premier Pools of Central Florida, Inc. (PPCF). Now, 19 years later, his faith has never wavered. project that I can venture to say that no one in Florida has ever built before. This pool is a very large one with multiple features like colored LED lighting, a spa, and two bridges that meet a sunken pit in the middle of it, which has a firepit in its center. The sunken pit is connected to a bar top that has stools in front of it. There is an aluminum pergola over the pit with louvers that can close, and a waterfall that drops from the front of it, behind the stools. It’s truly awesome, and I can’t wait until it’s done!” What has kept Todd happily designing pools for PPCF all these years, though, is the integrity and efficiency with which this company operates. He was taught early on by Dan how important it is to really listen to their customers, and to make sure that you don’t give them unrealistic expectations.
