A CARING VISIONARY
bY rAY DiZAZZO
That’s how most of us would define a visionary, and Gus Sanchez fits that definition to a “T” . As Operations Manager at Republic Services of Oxnard, and founder of the non-profit organization, Community Among Friends, he envisions a cleaner, safer, and more prosperous future for the city . And just how does he feel that vision can become a reality? “Education is the key,” he says, with an optimistic smile . “We have to educate our young people about the planet and our city . And we have to make them partners in creating a better future .” It’s that unique ability to visualize positive new horizons and his power to bring people together in that effort that won Sanchez the 2012 Ventura County Leadership Academy’s “Distinguished Community Leader of the Year” Award . In October, he was honored with the award during a special luncheon at the prestigious
Spanish Hills Golf and Country Club . Born and raised in Oxnard, Sanchez graduated from Channel Islands High School . Soon after, he served in the Army for eight years where he successfully completed both the “Primary Leadership” and “Non-Commissioned Officer” schools . The more we talked, the more I realized one simple word could sum up Sanchez’s personality: caring . “It’s not about Gus Sanchez,” he says, “it’s about being part of something good –working together with good people, and seeing the wonderful things we can do to make Oxnard a better place for us all .” So what’s next for the caring visionary with the optimistic smile? Sanchez will continue to help shape the future of Oxnard – supporting new businesses, more jobs and a growing educated population to fill those jobs – or in his words, “Exciting new horizons!”
“We have to edu-
cate our young people about the planet and our city. and we have to make them partners in creating a better future.”

Honoring Healthy Life Choices “Celebrando una vida saludable” bY nAttY riOS-SipES AnD pEDrO A. cHAvEZ Like many in nuestra communidad, Natty and I are part of a generation of Latino children and familias growing up in the 1980’s watching sitcoms portraying the American family. Every week we watched in awe at the lives these fictional families led on television, and hoped one day we too would live the lifestyles offered by the American dream in our daily lives. One of those sitcoms was Growing Pains featuring actors Alan Thicke, Joanna Kerns, Kirk Cameron, Tracey Gold and Jeremy Miller each playing a starring role of the “Seaver” family for more than seven years. Each week we tuned in, watched, laughed, and at times walked away with a life lesson or two disguised in a script of good humor and funny antics. Recently, Big Brothers Big Sisters honored one of those actors, Tracey Gold, who played “Carol Seaver,” a nerdy teen character who later went on to acting in numerous television movies, and last year became the host of a Lifetime reality show called Starving Secrets. Many might not know that Gold battled eating disorders, like anorexia for years, which almost took her life. Big Brothers Big Sisters serves more than 1,000 Latino children and families facing adversity by providing one-on-one mentoring relationships by caring adult role models to ensure they succeed in school and life. The organization held a champagne luncheon called “Bags, Bling & Bubbly” for women to raise financial resources to support youth mentoring programs countywide. Big Brothers Big Sisters selected Tracey Gold as the “Wise Wonderful Woman of the Year” because her life struggle exemplifies how one overcomes adversity. Her advocacy work on women’s health issues makes her an inspiration to young girls in the community. “I want to create a social consciousness about eating disorders faced by so many young ladies,” said Tracey Gold. “By sharing my story, I wish to inspire young women to build their self-esteem and self-worth and mentoring is a great way to accomplish that. I am so honored to have received this award from Big Brothers Big Sisters an organization that is truly making a positive impact on our country’s youth.” To learn more about becoming a mentor to Latino children and youth in the community visit LatinoBigs.org. 14 | www.divatu.com
To onlookers it might have seemed like just another wedding – the bride, lovely and glowing in her gown, and the groom, handsome and nervous at her side. Some might have even thought it a little odd that her two children accompanied her into the church. But those who knew the bride and groom saw much more than just another wedding. They saw the dream of a lifetime coming true – literally. You see the bride, 24 year old AlbaYaning, is dying of cancer. And the groom, 25 year old Angel Mendoza III, is making sure that the most important dream of her lifetime comes true – to not only be the proud mother of two amazing children, but also the husband of the man she loves. Even with the best of intentions, a wedding is no small undertaking. Luckily, the couple had the help and support of family, friends and

the women of Madrinas del Rebozo, who coordinated the event. And to everyone’s credit, it came off flawlessly. The settings, Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church and the lavish Four Point Sheraton, Ventura, were a blend of traditional and modern elegance that was prefect for just such an occasion. Alba put it simply in her words of gratitude to those who made her dream a reality, “They dotted every “i” and crossed every “t”. It was a dream come true, and I know now that nothing else matters, but to love and live your life to the fullest each and every day, hour and second.” It was obvious how much those words meant to Alba and Angel, as the priest pronounced them husband and wife. The couple kissed and turned to cheering friends and relatives, both overflowing with love, and deeply grateful for each and every moment they will share together.

LOS DÍAS FESTIVOS estilo Hispano
BY Sarah Peralta
