LOS SACRAMENTOS

BAPTISMS for Children take place in English on the 2nd Saturday of the month. Parents, please register the child at the rectory at least one month in advance.

LOS BAUTISMOS se llevan a cabo en español en el primer y tercer sábado de mes. Los padres, favor de registrar sus niños en la rectoria un mes antes de Bautismo.

GODPARENTS REQUIREMENTS:

Godparents: A man and a woman over the age of 18 years; if married they should have been married in the Catholic Church. If the Godparents are single, they must not live with a partner and must have received the three sacraments of initiation, viz., Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist (Communion).

Padrionos: Un hombre Católico y una mujer Católica mayors de 18 años. Si están casados, ellos tienen que estar casados por la Iglesia Católica. Si los padrinos son individuales, no deben vivir con su pareja, deberían recibir los tres Sacramentos de iniciación que son Bautismo, Confirmación y Eucaristia (Comunión).

They must bring as proof, certificates of Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist (Communion)

THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION (CONFESSION): Saturday 4:30 PM in English. MATRIMONY (MARRIAGE): Couples should make an appointment with a priest at least 6 months before the wedding date. They will then get all of the information required. ANOINTING OF THE SICK: Please inform a priest whenever anyone is seriously ill. In case of emergency, call the rectory at any time.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM: We invite our Second Year Students of religious education Program to a retreat, which will be held on Sunday April 24, 2016 10:00am-3:00pm. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Just as the early church consecrated women living alone in the world, today that consecration is available to women who take solemn vows as cloistered nuns (different from religious sisters), women who follow a way of life in communities called “secular institutes,” and laywomen. Oddly, the ritual is not permitted for religious sisters. The prayers talk about the woman’s self-gift to Christ, and her self-gift to the Church. Up until recent years, this was a solemn ceremony performed only for cloistered nuns under certain circumstances. In its new form, we have a ritual that revives a very ancient and little-known way of life.

Today, a woman can live independently at home, without association with any religious sisterhood or institute, yet be consecrated to holiness and service. Normally, a ring and/or a veil may be given in the liturgy of consecration. It is a rite very different from religious profession, where the sister makes promises or vows, and is rather an expression of approval and blessing for a way of life already embraced. Unlike ancient times, which valued actual virginity, the new rite may be celebrated for anyone provided there has never been a marriage and the woman has always lived a virtuous life.

JOINING THE COMPANY OF BELIEVERS What will help you to believe? Today’s scripture readings tell of faith and doubt. They offer stories “recorded to help you believe,” as the passage from John’s Gospel (20:31) remarks today. There is an urgency about this. On this Second Sunday of Easter we are challenged to join the company of believers—countless men and women who witnessed the power of the apostles’ faith. There is no doubt that this power comes from Jesus Christ. The second reading, from the book of Revelation, reports John’s mystical vision of the Son of Man, who proclaims, “Once I was dead, but now I live” (Revelation 1:18). The Gospel gathers everyone but Thomas to see the Risen Jesus and receive the Holy Spirit from him. Like Thomas, we who have come along later must have faith so that we can have life". Originalmente de las Islas Canarias, a la edad de 24, se trasladó a Cuba. En 1651 llegó a Guatemala con la ambición de predicar a Cristo. Esto lo hizo, no como sacerdote ni religioso. El fue como laico, reconociendo su deber bautismal de evangelizar. En 1655 ingresó en la Orden Seglar Franciscana y como laico quiso poner en práctica la espiritualidad franciscana, ayudando a los pobres. Con su propio pan o casa el alimentaba al hambriento y amparaba al indigente. A todos recordaba la

necesidad de la salvación y en la simplicidad de su mensaje derretía el egoísmo de los ricos. Les abría el corazón enseñándoles a compartir con los más pequeños de sus hermanos y hermanas. Eventualmente su nobleza de espíritu atrajo a hombres y mujeres que deseaban compartir su apostolado y fundó la Orden Betlehemita. También fundó la primera escuela de niños en Centro América convirtiéndose en el alfabetizador de Guatemala. Así dio ejemplo de lo que la Iglesia debe hacer por el pobre y marginado.
