2 Editorial FOR FEEDBACK PLEASE EMAIL WE NEED TO HEAR FROM YOU FOR COMMENTS 30 SEPTEMBER 2022 listened as the man voiced a common Iconcern: "Everyone is worried about the economy this year. My hairline is in recession; my waistline is in inflation; and altogether I am in depression!" The comments were made in fun, but they reminded me that people face pressure, problems, and pain as a part of their everyday existence. Normally people face the stress of life and just keep plowing through, day after day. Occasionally the pressure gets to them and they crack, crumble, and crash. They're left hurting and hopeless. For many, hopelessness has become their existence. It's at this point that we must strive to discover how the pressure of life can help us find hope instead of despair. The apostle Paul penned 2 Thessalonians probably less than six months after writing the first letter to them. He wrote again so quickly to clear up a few items in the first letter, but also to encourage this young church because they were under so much pressure. He wrote to infuse them with hope by helping them understand the purpose of pressure. If we can get a grasp on the same lessons, we can discover ways in the midst of pressure to find hope. Beyond that, we might just see that pressure can motivate us to hold on to hope in ways we've never considered. A man found himself in the middle of a pasture with an angry bull chasing him. He was running as fast as he could. The only form of escape he could see was a tree, but the nearest limb was 10 feet off the ground. The man ran for it, made a tremendous leap at the branch but missed it----on the way up; he caught it on the way back down! Motivation makes all the difference. When the pressure of life is on, I'm more motivated than at any other time to want hope surging through my spirit. The good news is that because Jesus is risen, there is hope. In the first 12 verses of Paul's letter we can learn volumes about how hope bubbles in the pressure cooker. Before we examine the main points as they relate to hope, allow me to point out some essential things to notice about the passage. I refer to these essentials as entrance ramps. If you have driven down an interstate highway, you realize that to get moving into the flow of traffic, you use the entrance ramp. The same is true with Scripture. Before we get moving in the flow of the passage, let's use entrance ramps to get started. An entrance ramp is found in verses 8-9. "He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and from the majesty of his power" (NIV). I have to call this entrance ramp, nonnegotiable consequences. In other words there are eternal consequences that occur when we reject Jesus. I wish that I could erase that from my Bible at times. I wish I could accept universalism, which teaches that all will be saved. But I can't; no one can. You can't tamper with truth. The truth is that without Him we are lost and doomed. Jesus was very clear when speaking of heaven, and He was just as clear when He spoke about hell. If He was wrong about one, He was wrong about the other. There are many today who think they can go to heaven, and want to ignore the Affiliate with: Monitored By: DISTRIBUTION AREAS * Delmas * Sundra * Eloff * Ogies * Phola * Kriel * Emalahleni * Machadodorp * Belfast * Waterval Boven *Middelburg * Mhluzi *Hendrina * Kwaggafontein KwaMhlanga Tweefontein Call 081 303 7023 to find out the exact spots where you can get the paper Layout & Design Myaba Media & Tech [email protected] 081 410 9337 OR www.highveldchronicle.co.za Contact Numbers 081 303 7023 072 839 2885 Bontle Rapodile 076 958 3187 HIGHVELD CHRONICLE (EMALAHLENI LM - VICTOR KHANYE LM - STEVE TSHWETE LM - EMAKHAZENI LM- THEMBISILE HANI LM ) MIDDELBURG- Harry Johannes Knoesen (63), a leader of the National Christian Resistance Movement, a right-wing organization, has been sentenced to two life terms and twenty-one years in prison for terrorism-related offences by the Mpumalanga High Court sitting in Middelburg. According to reports, Knoesen has been convicted of preparing and planning terrorist attacks, inciting people to carry out terrorist attacks in South Africa, soliciting people's support for terrorist attacks in South Africa, and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. Knoesen has been charged alongside the Abrams brothers, Errol and Eric, who pleaded guilty and were sentenced for their crimes. Monica Nyuswa, a spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said, "From December 2018 to November 28, 2019, Knoesen developed a deep-seated hatred for the n o n - p r o fi t r a c i a l d e m o c r a t i c dispensation established under the auspices of the Constitution and implemented by the South African government, as well as for South Africans residing in the Republic." " He attempted to justify his beliefs on religious grounds, claiming that God had predestined him to reclaim South Africa for white people. His highly racial views motivated him to overthrow the government and kill Africans indiscriminately," she explained. He also intended to attack government institutions, particularly the police and military. " He also named townships and informal settlements populated by Africans as potential targets. Digital devices, including weapons and ammunition, were also seized, the accused pleaded not guilty to the crimes, and the state led evidence of various witnesses, including his social media administrator, who arranged the plenary meetings." she said. Yet, Jesus was speaking the truth. The only way to heaven is to accept Him, and that is the origin of hope. The next entrance ramp is important for us to remember, as well. There are two verses that we need to study. In verse 3 we read, "We ought always to thank God for you." In verse 11 we read, "With this in mind we constantly pray for you." Both of these verses remind us of the entrance ramp I call, the priority of prayer. This was a repeated theme from the apostle Paul. He often reminded people of their need to pray. He made prayer a priority in his life as well. There was an old preacher who was reflecting to a friend one day. He shared that he had noticed through the years there was less power in his preaching than when he was a younger man. As his friend inquired as to why this was so, the preacher offered his evaluation of what had been taking place. When he was younger he had the prayer support of many of his friends. As he had grown older, many of his friends had died. Because they were dead, they weren't able to pray for him anymore. Not as much prayer support meant not as much power. He certainly gives us something to think about. We must always remember there is great power in prayer. Prayer is a privilege we need to take seriously. Hope is easier to find when you make communication with the Father a priority. Keep those things in mind and let's move into the passage and make some discoveries about hope in the midst of pressure. This would be the interstate trip through the passage. (Most would probably call these the main points.) At this moment in history the church was facing the most brutal persecution ever. The pressure was on to bow to Caesar. If they refused, they ran the risk of being crucified and tortured. I. Power under pressure produces hope In verses 3-4 we read, "We ought always to thank God for you, brothers, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love every one of you has for each other is increasing. Therefore, among God's churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring." As Paul writes this he points out some interesting things that are taking place. He reminds them that their faith is growing, their love is increasing, they are standing tough, and they are facing it together. If someone were to ask me if I wanted to be described as a person who was growing stronger in his faith and loving others more, I'd have to say, "Certainly." It is happening in the passage, but it is not happening in good times; it is happening in the pressure cooker. Sometimes we make great discoveries about God when we weren't expecting to do so. When we are under pressure we are able to see the way God provides and cares for us, and that brings hope. God does some of His greatest work in the pressure cooker. Never forget, it takes broken soil to produce a crop. It takes broken clouds to give rain. It takes broken grain to give bread. It takes broken bread to give us strength. In the midst of turbulent times, we find a power that we never knew we could have. That power awakens within us awareness that we are not alone. That power brings with it hope! Convicted Harry Knoesen BETHAL – Bethal Correctional Services is tightening up its security. This comes after a prison warder caught a 36-yearold woman on Tuesday at Bethal Correctional Centre for drug possessing drugs to an inmate. On September 28, she appeared in Bethal Magistrate Court. According to information, the n a b b e d s u s p e c t L o r r a i n e Makhubele was arrested by a warder before entering the Bethal prison premises. The drugs are estimated to be worth R6000. Police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said, "the female visitor was reportedly searched in accordance with prison standard procedures, and a black plastic bag concealed beneath her underwear was discovered." "It was later discovered that the plastic bag contained roughly 59 different types of tablets, as well as 20 small plastic bags and other substances such as crushed leaves and an oil-filled plastic bottle," he explained. “Police and prison officials went to the inmate's bed and conducted another search. A second plastic bag containing dagga was discovered. The inmate is also facing a charge of dagga possession." he said. In an interview with the publication, Bethal prison spokesperson Opheliah Motloutsi stated, "This was not the first time an incident of this nature had occurred at Bethal Correctional Centre. We have such incidents because it is our responsibility to search every visitor who comes to our facility,” “We call upon the community members, society at large and our inmates to refrain from smuggling illegal item into the Correctional Centres because this will impact negatively on inmates' rehabilitation and the time they spend in our facilities,” she explained. “Inmates who flout our regulations are guaranteed to undergo disciplinary processes in line with relevant sections of the Correctional Services Act, and if found guilty there are various penalties that can be imposed to that inmate. Amongst others is restriction of visitation for a period of not exceeding 42 days and the inmate will be degraded to a higher security classification which will lead to a non-contact visit from his/her family members.” She added. Makhubele has been remanded in custody and her case has been postponed to October 5 for formal bail application. News 30 SEPTEMBER 2022 3 HIGHVELD CHRONICLE (EMALAHLENI LM - VICTOR KHANYE LM - STEVE TSHWETE LM - EMAKHAZENI LM- THEMBISILE HANI LM ) EMALAHLENI - Meet Jabu Mabena, a 37-year-old dedicated Emalahleni resident who is determined to make a difference. The ambitious poultry and piggery farmer, who received Kranspoort Farm on a 30-year lease from the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development (DALRRD), hopes to provide opportunities for young people. He was speaking at his farm near Verena on Tuesday, 27 September during a DALRRD-organized media tour of the Nkangala District. Mabena joined the Animal and Veld Management (AVMP), where he first secured tenure on portion 1 of the Kranspoort Allias Blackwood Camp 255 JS from the DALRRD department. He currently runs a Kranspoort farm in Verena, which is part of the T h e m b i s i l e H a n i L o c a l Municipality. The farm stretches 421 hectares and is divided into livestock (cattle and goats), vegetables and tomatoes, game farming and trophy hunting, timber, and tourism. "I started farming in 2018." Mabena stated. "I'd like to build my own feedlot on the farm where I can fatten the cattle before sending them to the abattoir for slaughter," he said. He aims to employ young people. " Visionary farmer aims to create jobs for the youth I'd also like to increase the number of interns who receive training on this farm. Currently, twelve students are being trained on the farm. I want to create jobs for young people in the future," he explained. In an interview with the Highveld Chronicle, Andile Mabena, one of the students enrolled in the NOTHANDO MAKHUBELA u n d e r e m p l o y m e n t g r a d u a t e program, stated, "I am currently doing an internship in animal production. I've learned a lot since I arrived here. Working for Mabena is both productive and educational.” he added. DALRRD supported the farm through a cash injection of nearly R5 million to purchase farming implements and just over 100 Angus and Brangus heifers and bulls. Kranspoort supplies vegetables to local SPAR grocery stores in Witbank and Phola and timber to PG Bison wood while it also welcome trophy hunters for hunting in order to generate income for farming operations. D E L M A S – D e p a r t m e n t o f Agriculture, Land Reform, and Rural Development (DALRRD) on Monday, 26 September invited the media to showcase what they deem as a true success farming story which they supported as the department in addition to leasing land to the owners. Poultry Harvest, a black-owned and run poultry 64 hectares' farm with ten (10) equal size environmentally adaptive 40 000 capacity broiler houses. The farm which is owned by E m m a n u a l M n i s i a n d G u g u Mkhatshwa is one of the main suppliers to Daybreak Farms, a poultry factory that supplies packeged chickens to major retail stores all over the country and beyond. By 2015 the farm had 8 broiler houses and in 2018 two more houses were added through a cash injection of about R11 million from DALRRD to stretch the total capacity to 400 000. Poultry Harvest currently employs fourteen (14) full-time employees and two (2) students from Tshwane University of Technology. In an interview with the Highveld Chronicle, Joseph Ndlovu, an acting supervisor spoke of the essential skills he learned for the over 9 years he has been part of the farm. “I have learned so much being part of the farm, I came here with zero experience in poultry but now I hold a certificate in poultry farming which I received through the assistance from the company” Ndlovu said. “For one to succeed here, he/she must be prepared to work hard and not always wait to be taught everything but be willing to learn other things on their own” Ndlovu added. “For me working here is like home, I enjoy being here and I am learning a lot” Ndlovu concluded. The publication also spoke to Jane Masango (28), a new employee with one-year experience at the farm who indicated that there is so much to learn in poultry for young people like her. “I have learned so much as a young person, I know many of my peers think working at a farm is backward but I can say it is very fulfilling working at the farm and there is so much one can learn which can positively contribute towards their future growth in life” Masango said. Speaking on the challenges on an interview with Highveld Chronicle, the co-owner Gugu Mkhatshwa said, “Eskom (load shedding) and theft are the two major challenges amongst others”. The farm spends over R 90 000 on fuel per month just to power up backup generators. Mkhatshwa further indicated the challenge they have regarding the poor condition road leading to the farm and the bridge on it which overflows during heavy rains, completely restricting access to the farm. “We recently engaged with the VKLM mayor Cllr Buda regarding our problem and he promptly responded to our plea for help as he brought in the department of public works which committed to fix the road and also build a stronger bridge” Mkhatshwa concluded. 4 News HIGHVELD CHRONICLE (EMALAHLENI LM - VICTOR KHANYE LM 30 SEPTEMBER 2022 - STEVE TSHWETE LM - EMAKHAZENI LM- THEMBISILE HANI LM ) MIDDELBURG - It appears the future of Mhlonishwa Masilela as Steve Tshwete mayor hangs in the balance especially after the August 17 mayhem that claimed a life of a worker, Tshepo Maseko. Maseko (33) was shot and killed while 3 others were injured by security guards, using live ammunition, during a protest demanding better salaries and the removal of then acting municipal manager Thokozile Zulu and mayor Mhlonishwa Masilela. Shooter Nqubeko Mchunu was arrested the following day and a p p e a r e d a t t h e M i d d e l b u r g Magistrate's Court facing charges of murder and three of attempted murder. Masilela has since shown a shoddy appearance on municipality's main events including council sittings. He was nowhere to be seen during council sitting on Thursday, 29 September 2022. The following day the municipality held a Heritage celebration event, and mayor Masilela was not present. Unconfirmed reports say that municipal workers, not content with Masilela's acumen, are preventing him from entering municipal premises until his political principals agree to engage workers. A short video doing rounds on social media shows a group of angry workers escorting Masilela out of the municipal building. "This will be the case until he and his principals address us. Workers demand a full report what transpired on the fateful day of August 17 where criminals, disguised as security guards, murdered one of our own and injured others," said an anonymous worker who spoke to Highveld Chronicle. "The family of the deceased needs answers in order to get closure and heal." When contacted, Masilela said he is aware of the situation but is not avoiding the workers. "I came on Thursday but it was impossible for me to gain entry so I decided to assign councillor Marumo becuase I did not want to cause a commotion and I decided to leave," he said. "The reason I was not present at the Heritage event is because I had an engagement with COGTA." Masilela's leadership qualities on test LUCAS SHONGWE MIDDELBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Steve Tshwete says it is concerned continuous dumping of waste possess a health hazard to residents. "We acknowledge that service delivery in Steve Tshwete was halted by a prolonged strike, however, residents have been exposed to serious health hazards for quite some time," said councillor, Damien Klopper. In a statement Klopper wrote that the party has written to the municipal manager, Mandla Mguni and the parks and recreation department to give the matter an urgent attention. "Residents in ward 18, Thembisa O.R Tambo Park at the end of Sefoka street are subject to heaps of rubbish. The amount of waste disposed of in this p a r k i s u n b e a r a b l e a n d t h e municipality is doing nothing in this regard," he said. "These heaps of litter are also right across from houses on the border of the parks and open fields where dumping has occurred. Residents walking in the direction of 6th avenue are exposed to piles of rubbish to reach their destination. Zenzeleni street in ward 25, has also turned into a dumping site with some nearby residents taking advantage of the situation. Such lawlessness should be prohibited in our communities. The municipality should ensure that there are bylaws in place to address this and impose hefty fines for perpetrators. Koppies Street in the CBD has also experienced piles of litter that have not been attended to." Klopper continued to say that his party is aware of the municipality's action plan to combat service delivery (not sure what this means) in the township as a result of the strike. "No resident should face the after effects of the labour relations problems and have their lives put at risk. It is unacceptable that workers of Steve Tshwete Local Municipality continue to drag their feet, while innocent ratepayers are subject to poor service delivery," he said. "The DA will not tolerate the municipality's cautious approach towards its defiant employees. Residents of this town have suffered for far too long as a result of the previous strike. It is high time that the municipality delivers adequate services to the residents of Steve Tshwete. The DA calls on the municipality to urgently intervene and dispatch the relevant department to deal with the matter so that the community may utilise the parks once again, and so that ratepayers can have pride in the environment they live in." Waste poses health hazard to residents LUCAS SHONGWE MPUMALANGA- Mpumalanga Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) Commissar Collen Sedibe has pleaded with the party to continue protecting the gains of its one million membership. “We must protect the gains of our movement and the only way we will be able to do that is through hard work.” S e d i b e , w h o i s r e - e l e c t e d chairperson, new party Provincial leader, was speaking at the Nutting House Lodge in Mbombela during the 3rd Provincial People's Assembly (PPA). This year marks nine years since the party's launch in 2013, and it continues to remain ambitious in its goal of growing its membership by one million by the end of 2022. Over 700 delegates attended the PPA over the weekend of September 16- 18, peacefully engaging and sharing ideas to help the organization grow in preparation for the 2024 General Elections. Sedibe was elected along-side, fighter Rhulani Qhibi as deputy chairperson, Commissar Jackson Malatjie as provincial secretary, fighter Ntsako Mkhabela as deputy secretary, and fighter Nomaswazi Nkambule elected provincial treasurer. On Sunday, the PPA was inaugurated and presided over by Secretary General, Commissar Marshal Dlamini, and closed by Commander in Chief, President Julius Sello Malema. In his address to the delegates, Sedibe pledged that the newly elected Provincial Command Team (PCT) will work to unite and grow the organization. “Allow me to congratulate the democratically elected PCT that will leave here with a renewed mandate. The mandate is clear comrades, one million membership by the end of 2022, solid branches and election victory in 2024. There is one PCT and a living organisation in Mpumalanga. Hard work starts today. There is no time for celebration. We will work for the unity of the organisation,” said Sedibe. Sedibe also pledged to carry out all delegates' resolutions and to deliver the organization during the 2024 General Elections. So far, the EFF has recruited over 50 000 members in Mpumalanga province. EFF Collen Sedibe re-elected as provincial party leader Mayor Mhlonishwa Masilela seems to be facing difficulty addressing municipal workers. On Friday, 30 September 2022, Masilela held the historical event to converse with the matric class of 2022 with the assistance of his invited guests; all graduates, who were born and raised by 'the dusty streets' of Victor Khanye and are now successful. Thabo Motau, the first black man in Delmas to own a mine despite having no qualifications related to mining, encouraged the Class of 2022 saying, “There is power in choice and direction because everything must contribute towards your destination.” Motau further expressed his gratitude to sharing the stage with people that taught and motivated him, referring to Dr Aaron Nkabinde and Floyd Mashele who were also speakers at the event. Mashele reminded the class of 2022 that only a few weeks left before final e x a m i n a t i o n s a n d h e f u r t h e r committed to deliver 120 chairs in response to the challenge of shortage of furniture faced by local schools. T h e municipality in its committed to support learners have been paying sponsoring matriculants with registration fee for their first year at tertiary. Masilela highlighted that the conversation idea was birthed out of a plea made by Mafa Max Motloung Secondary learners who wrote to him requesting for assistance in starting businesses. The three learners are Kwanele Mahlangu who has a dream of starting a Shisanyama and Vusumuzi Mabena and Nqobile Marokoane who want to be co-owners of the business. Masilela also mentioned that not having a matric certificate does not hinder one from extending assistance or giving wisdom to future leaders. “You must not make the same mistakes some of us did along the way” Masilela concluded. Following a call made by one learner for Masilela to support winter classes, “Mr Gossa” committed to offer support through Gossa Foundation starting from 2023 moving onwards. BONTLE RAPODILE .
