Expected to Visit Pakistan in 2023 Number of Chinese Tourists ISLAMABAD: After three gloomy years of cross-border tourism between Pakistan and China due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the year 2023, the Pakistan-China Year of Tourism Exchanges, is expected to witness a boom in the tourism sector in both countries. “Exchanges have already started online. We are also working with Chinese tourism associations to develop business linkages. Soon we’ll finalize a calendar of events and activities”, Aftab ur Rehman Rana, Managing Director of Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC) told China Economic Net (CEN). He believes that China, one of the biggest players in the tourism economy at the global level, will find a lot to explore in Pakistan, where a lot of business opportunities are coming up for individual investments in the tourism and hospitality sector. “Many Chinese people working under CPEC returned to China during the pandemic, now it’s time for them to come back with their families for a Page 08 Reports Highest Traffic Figures Since 2019 London Heathrow Airport LONDON: London Heathrow Airport (LHR) ended 2022 on a high, and yesterday reported its traffic figures for December and the whole year. Despite fears regarding potential disruption at the UK's main air hub over Christmas due to industrial action, the facility ran smoothly over the festive period, which was its busiest since 2019. December is a busy time of year for the world's airports, with the festive period prompting passengers to take to the skies to visit far-flung friends and family. 2022, in particular, had the potential to be particularly busy compared to the last few years, given that, unlike in 2020 and 2021, air travel is now more or less unrestricted. As such, Heathrow was able to report a 90% yearon-year increase in passengers in December 2022, having handled a total of 5.9 million that month. This made it LHR's busiest festive period since 2019, with the airport reporting that transatlantic travel, which would have been minimal last time around, played a key role. Indeed, routes between Heathrow and North America saw 1.45 million passengers last month, making this its secondbusiest market behind European Union destinations (1.85 million). The importance of the transatlantic market was underlined by the fact that Page 08 January 16 to January 22, 2023 06

He further informed that this highly impactful participation of Pakistan in this leading travel show in USA will provide our industry professionals a great opportunity to develop G2G, B2B and G2B linkages with the leading players of tourism industry at global level and in the near future it will greatly help in attracting more foreign tourists to Pakistan.n CAA Awards Art Gallery, Health Centre, Indoor sports facilities, baby day care centres, food courts. The structure will have a covered area of roughly 1 million square feet while containing the offices of different CAA cadres. The goal is to produce green building that is sustainable, waterefficient, energy-efficient, and have an environmentally friendly design with a low carbon footprint. Earlier, CAA and NESPAK entered into a Consultancy Agreement to provide services for planning, design and construction supervision of multi-storey building. Federal Minister of Aviation, Khawaja Saad Rafiq graced the Agreement signing ceremony and also attended by Director P&D CAA, Vikram Sodha, Managing Director NESPAK, Dr Tahir Masood and Head of NESPAK Islamabad Office, Danish Raza.n January 16 to January 22, 2023 08 Global Tourism Industry the Civil Aviation Administration of China relaxed certain COVID-19 restrictions on international passenger flights. “Before the pandemic, travel and tourism used to represent one in 10 jobs globally and one in $10 that were made globally. It’s a really significant sector, which brings a lot of economic benefits and a lot of jobs,” Simpson noted in a recent video interview with Xinhua news agency. According to a survey conducted last November of more than 26,000 consumers in 25 countries by YouGov for the WTTC, the appetite for international travel was at its highest point since the start of the pandemic with 63 percent of respondents planning a leisure trip in the next 12 months. It came as the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in November said international tourism was on track to reach 65 percent of pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2022 as the sector continued to bounce back. “We all know that our sector was severely damaged by the COVID-19 pandemic. But the good news is that travel and tourism are going to bounce back and will grow over the next 10 years almost double the rate of global gross domestic product (GDP),” she said. As a non-profit organization, WTTC’s members include over 200 CEOs, chairpersons and presidents of the world’s leading private sectortravel and tourism businesses. Simpson said that after nearly three years, the phenomenon of “revenge travel,” which means traveling to make up for lost time during the pandemic, is expected to lift tourism and boost businesses. “What we tend to see when people reopen their borders post-pandemic is that you have a lot of pentup demand for travel. The first such demand comes from family and friends … such as students working in another part of the world,” she said. Outbound Chinese visitors to the rest of the world were “among the most valuable in an economic sense,” Simpson added. In 2019, those Chinese visitors spent $253 billion globally, which represented 15 percent of the grand total, according to WTTC. For travelers from China, Simpson said Maldives and Mauritius, Australia and New Zealand, Europe and the U.S. lead the bucket lists of top destinations. “I’m almost describing here the whole of the world because, actually, Chinese visitors are now everywhere,” she said. The favorite attractions for foreign travelers to China may include the Great Wall, and the sights like Chengdu or Guilin, said the CEO. “People also like to do mountain walking, go shopping, and they love to understand the culture of China,” she said. PIA & Sabre Number of Chinese Tourists good visit. I expect that a number of Chinese tourists will visit Pakistan if we have better facilitation of border crossing, economical air ticket packages, and inter-city transportation between major cities like Beijing, Urumqi, Islamabad, Lahore…”, he said. The traffic will be twoway. He told CEN reporter that in China, the silk route is a very popular travel route that has also attracted many tourists from Europe. In Pakistan, the rich history, culture, festivity, and music will offer a unique travel experience. In this regard, PTDC has already developed a detailed guidebook on Pakistan in Chinese. Video films on Pakistan will also be developed with subtitles in Chinese to help Chinese tourists know more about Pakistan. A working committee having representatives of both the sides will be formed to make the collaboration in tourism promotion more fruitful. “It’s the most favorable time for bilateral tourism. It’s also time to make the visa policy more touristfriendly on both sides. Tour operators should be encouraged to develop group tour packages so groups of tourists could go an organized matter on a set itinerary and see the beautiful sites on both sides”, he further said.n a successful GDS joint venture in Pakistan since 2004. The extension of the content distribution agreement means that PIA will continue to have full access to Sabre’s extensive global seller network. PIA will also continue to work with Sabre in a joint venture which allows the airline to better market and sell its content using Sabre’s advanced technological solutions, including the intuitive ‘Sabre Red 360’ point of sale, to Travel Agents across Pakistan. “We are delighted to have reaffirmed and strengthened our relationship with Sabre with these two renewals so that, together, we can move forward with our plans to not only grow PIA’s footprint and revenue, but also to facilitate growth in the wider Pakistan travel ecosystem,” said Air Vice Marshal Muhammad Amir Hayat, Chief Executive Officer, Pakistan International Airlines. PIA services a vast network of locations across Pakistan and throughout Asia, Europe, and the Middle East, and has ambitious plans to expand its network further. “We greatly value our partnership with PIA, and we’re pleased and proud to have cemented this important relationship with these multi-year renewals. As the travel industry recovery continues apace, it’s vital that the travel agency community in Pakistan can access Sabre’s advanced global suite of solutions and services,” said Brett Thorstad, Vice President, Sabre Travel Solutions, Agency Sales, Asia Pacific. “We are excited about the growth trajectory of the Pakistan market and the future prospects for Sabre, PIA and this joint venture.” “Airlines are placing more emphasis than ever on how they create the right fares and offers,” said Rakesh Narayanan, Vice President, Regional General Manager, Asia Pacific, Travel Solutions, Airline Sales. “But what is also essential is that airlines have the ability to get those offers in front of the right travel sellers and passengers at the right time. The extension of our Global Distribution System (GDS) agreement with PIA means the airline will benefit from Sabre’s extensive and effective global distribution network, while Sabre’s network of travel sellers will continue to have access to a full range of PIA’s domestic and international content.”n LondonHeathrowAirport New York JFK has become LHR's busiest route again. December 2022 was marked by industrial action across the UK, as workers campaigned for better conditions against the backdrop of the rising cost of living. The aviation sector was among the fields impacted by the strikes, with Heathrow having to face the prospect of action from ground handlers and border workers. Despite these concerns, the airport largely ran smoothly over Christmas. Indeed, Heathrow reported that "92% of passengers passed through security in under 10 minutes during the Christmas peak," which was also my experience flying in on the evening of December 30th. While the airport did notice a shift in detention figures during the Border Force strike, most passengers will have gone home promptly and happily. Reflecting on the year, CEO John Holland-Kaye stated: "2022 ended on a high with our busiest Christmas in three years and a smooth and efficient service for passengers, thanks to the hard work of our colleagues and close planning with airlines, their ground handlers and Border Force." Heathrow also shared figures regarding its performance across 2022, with the main headline being that it handled 61.6 million passengers last year. While this doesn't quite represent a full return to 2019's traffic levels (76%, to be exact), this total is still some 42.2 million higher than what was seen in 2021. With such growth, Heathrow had the largest year-onyear improvement of any European airport.n Once again, the EU and North America were driving forces, with these markets seeing 21.3 million and 15.4 million passengers travel to and from Heathrow last year. Going forward, the airport states that "providing excellent service remains our key priority for 2023, as the aviation industry rebuilds capacity and resilience."n Oman Air Ranked of all Oman Air staff across our global network. As we enter into 2023, we look forward to continuing to pursue excellence in all elements of our guest experience, from punctuality to convenience, our products and services, and of course our signature Omani hospitality.” Continuing to position itself as a major international carrier, Oman Air has set several benchmarks for quality, comfort and hospitality in the last year, earning itself the 2023 Five-Star Major Airline rating by the Airline Passenger Experience Association (APEX), among others.
