ART THERAPY EVENT 1.

INTRODUCTION 1.1 Overview People dealing with illness, disability, mental health issues, and other

difficulties can find artistic healing through art therapy, which blends the creation of art with applied psychological theory. Built on the idea of exposing special talents, art therapy is available to people of all ages and abilities. Along with dance therapy, music therapy, and other forms of treatment, art therapy is included in the creative therapy category. These alternative therapy techniques have the potential to improve self-esteem, reduce anxiety, and develop communication skills, all of which are essential for people with disabilities. Art therapy utilises visual arts to enrich the lives of individuals with disabilities. People with disabilities learn how to express themselves uniquely and develop technical skills while experimenting with various creative endeavours. The many advantages of this integrative and artistic treatment include improving communication, fostering social skills, and more. People with disabilities have a way to express their creativity, find new passions, and gain confidence through art therapy. This event will implement three art therapy exercises and techniques which are painting, drawing, and floristry, and also one activity of therapeutic music session. For the painting activities, the artist can play with colour, shadows, textures, and shapes when using a brush or their fingers to create art. In addition to promoting fluid motions, finger painting offers relaxing sensory experiences that enhance emotional and energetic expression. Further, drawing activities gives people the freedom to follow their emotions without restraint and to easily channel their energy. Drawing in-depth sketches or doodles in any style is a simple activity that can be done anywhere. Meanwhile, floristry activities allow disabled people the opportunities for social engagement and enhance their creativity as well as teaching them how to work independently, solve problems, and follow instructions which encourages them to strike up conversations and develop communication skills and cognitive skills altogether. Additionally, innovative approaches like therapeutic music sessions are just normal passive participation where the participants just enjoy the calming music sound to relax their mind. Music is also a form of art that needs to be enjoyed. It is also proven that music can relax one’s mind hence it is a suitable activity for people with developmental disabilities such as autism or disabilities that are caused by the brain. 6

ART THERAPY EVENT 1.2 History of Perbadanan Perpustakaan Awam Selangor (PPAS)

Figure 1. PPAS logo The Selangor Public Library Corporation (PPAS) was formed by the Selangor Public Library Corporation Act of 1968, which was published in the Government Gazette No. 5 of March 27, 1969, the Government Gazette No. 7 of 1975 (amendment),

and

the

Government

Gazette No. 29 of November 2011.

(amendment). The Selangor Public Library Corporation Board of Directors was established in 1971 in order to launch a public library in the State of Selangor. The acquisition of the Kuala Lumpur Book Club to serve as the Selangor Public Library Corporation Headquarters on October 20, 1971, was the first move in this direction. On November 16, 1986, this library relocated to Shah Alam and took the name Raja Tun Uda Library (RATU). While the interior design of the State library building contrasts Eastern and Western civilizations, the outside of the structure is typical of Bugis culture. This structure has six storeys and 102,545 square feet of space, of which 40,420 square feet is the reading room, which can hold more than 1,000 readers at once. There are 250 000 book manuscripts on the shelf. Public access to the library began on April 18, 1987, and AlMarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj Ibni AlMarhum Sultan Hisamuddin Alam Shah Alhaj officially declared it open on March 15, 1988. The Selangor Public Library Corporation's administrative centre is located in the Raja Tun Uda Library, a State Library. The Selangor Public Library Corporation's administrative offices have once more relocated to a brand-new structure in Shah Alam's Section 13. In accordance with the proclamation of "Selangor Maju 2005," His Majesty Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj Ibni Almarhum Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Alhaj, Sultan of Selangor, has donated this library to the people of Selangor. As a milestone for Selangor Maju 2005, the introduction of this library website was accomplished on August 27, 2005.

7

ART THERAPY EVENT On July 22, 2011, this library, which spans 203,600 square feet across 6 stories, opened its doors to the public. It can house 2,500 people at once. Libraries in the State of Selangor are managed, maintained, and coordinated by the State Library. It serves as the Selangor Public Library Corporation Headquarters concurrently. Since its founding in 1971, the Selangor Public Library Corporation has developed in accordance with the goals of the Selangor State Government, and as of now, it has 104 service locations across the state.

1.3 Logo

Figure 2. Art therapy event logo The event logo is based on art tools that symbolise art for the activities organized during Art Therapy events. The splash graphics represent the visitors and participation. In other words, visitors are encouraged to engage and participate in basic activities that can be a source of spiritual serenity. On the other hand, every colour chosen for the event logo has its own specific meaning. The colour yellow represents sunshine, hope, and happiness. It also associated vitality, positivism, energy, optimism, memory, and intelligence. Black colour is associated with a mysterious and powerful colour, it can raise a person's sense of potential and possibilities as well as boost a person's self-esteem and lastly red represents the 'life' of courage that should be present in every human being regardless of a person's strengths and weaknesses. Lastly, the event slogan ‘Art of healing’ was also included in the logo to show that art can also be used for inner peace and healing and this event will prove it to the participants.

ACTIVITIES There are several activities that have been held for this event that are suitable

for disabled people that can be participated in by them. These activities are open for disabled-people attending the event. Their guardian can help them in participating in these activities. Each person can choose any activity that they would like to choose. They are no limitation in choosing the activities. They can participate in all activities within the event time. The activities prepared are as below. 1. Painting and drawing Painting and drawing can be therapeutic for them as they can scribble, draw and paint anything they want on the canvas. It is a creative medium which is perfect to let the participant vent out their emotions through painting and drawing. Participants can explore all the colours, convey their ideas, use their senses and explore the outcome. However, participants may choose either to use brushes provided or just by using their fingers. What matters is the enjoyable experience of repeatedly painting, either with two brushes or their fingers. Painting could also reduce stress and improve the participant’s sensory. Drawing can assist the participants in developing their writing and creative thinking abilities, hand-eye coordination, critical thinking abilities, and thinking skills. By developing a sense of accomplishment, drawing has been shown to boost good emotions while lowering negative ones. Your brain releases feel-good chemicals whenever you generate anything new or advance your sketching abilities. Drawing may help you express your inner thoughts to people in a visual way as well as by allowing you time to think about them more thoroughly. All the preparation such as canvas, paint, brushes and more are provided by the organiser.

2. Floristry Floristry is a flower arrangement activity. Flower arrangement can improve physical proficiency, increased sensory stimulation, and stress reduction. Individuals of various ages, skills, and skill levels may enjoy flower arrangement. Whether the participants are standing, seated at a table, in a wheelchair, anybody may make floral arrangements. Therefore, it is one of the perfect activities that disabled people can

14

ART THERAPY EVENT participate in. Some benefits of flower arrangement are it reduces their stress and anxiety. Flowers come in a huge range of colours, scents, and designs. When it comes to enhancing emotions, having flowers around the house or at the office is quite advantageous. A beautiful floral arrangement may make you feel happy all day long. Other than that, participants can express their creativity in arranging the flowers according to their creativity in the types of flowers, colours and how they would like it to be arranged. Participants may use different types of flowers to arrange their own bouquet. After the activity finishes, they can bring home their own bouquet with them.

3. Therapeutic Music Session Music therapy is the clinical application of music to achieve specific objectives including stress reduction, mood enhancement, and self-expression. It is a well-known, evidence-based therapy in the medical field. Formal music therapy was defined and first used by the United States War Department in 1945. It helped military service members recover in Army hospitals with occupational therapy, education, recreation and physical reconditioning. (Cleveland Clinic, 2020). Music therapy includes playing instruments, listening to music and even singing. This activity focuses on letting the participants to sit and listen to the soft and calming music. This activity could help them to keep calm, reduce stress and anxiety. This activity can make the participants stay focused on the music. Other than that, it could also help them observe their emotions. It is a very effective activity for the participants to keep calm.

METHODOLOGY In order to ensure that this event has achieved its mission, vision and

objectives, feedback form for participants, especially disabled people which this event focuses on has been made to evaluate the overall event, activities, venue, and others. 6.1 Feedback Form Design The feedback form design was made as simple as possible to ease the participant to respond to the form. The feedback form was also made with 5 questions each section because people sometimes tend to ignore the feedback form as it has too many questions. Hence it is why the feedback form was made as brief as it can be to ensure every participant answered the form for the evaluation process. Simple words were used in the feedback forms so that the forms are easy to read and understandable. For instance, we use words that portray the respondent's feelings themselves such as ‘I enjoyed attending this event’. This way, it is more simple and easier to read. The feedback form has 6 sections altogether where the first section of the form asks about the participants themselves such as name, age, and gender to ease the evaluation of the event as it can be easily summarised according to the participant’s age group or gender. Aside from that, on the first part of the feedback form, the respondent also needs to tick on what activities that they have joined in the event. Because the respondent might join more than 1 activity, the box is set so it can tick more than 1 activity. The other 5 sections of the feedback forms govern the overall experience of the respondent towards the event and activities. To measure this, linear scales were used to measure the level of satisfaction of the participants as it is easier to express feelings and thoughts using linear scale as it has 5 satisfactory levels where it starts with number 1, strongly disagreed and number 5, strongly agreed. Firstly, for part A which is for the evaluation of the overall event and how it is disabled-friendly enough to give the disabled people the best experience they ever had. Next for part B, it is to evaluate the speakers and facilitators whether they are helpful and friendly enough towards the 16

ART THERAPY EVENT participants. For section C which is the venue, it governs about how the venue is comfortable and big enough with all of the participants that joined the event and lastly for section D is the participant’s final thought whether they would like to join the same event again in the future and their thoughts on the activities and event altogether. This feedback form is very important for the participants to answer so that the organizers can evaluate and improve on what needs to be improved to give the better experience for participants in future events.

6.2 Feedback Respondent As the event was made to focus on the disabled people, the feedback respondent

also

focused

on

the

disabled

people.

However,

it

is

understandable that some disabled people are unable to answer the feedback form due to certain circumstances such as disabled children that might not be able to answer the form, the caretaker or the family of the disabled participants can also answer the feedback form on behalf of them. Next, the feedback form was also made for disabled people of all ages as there is an option for participants under the age of 17 which the organizers categorise it as children, 18 to 25 as young adults, 26 to 49 as adults and lastly above 50 years old for senior citizens.

6.3 Feedback Instrument The feedback form was made with Google Form by Google as the structure of it is not complex and very easy to use for both participants and event organisers. Not only that, Google Form also presents its summary and data in a simple way that is easy to understand.

17

ART THERAPY EVENT

Figure 3 & 4. Respondent’s data As shown in the picture above, the participants' answers will automatically turn into graphs and percentages that ease the process of evaluating the responses given by participants. Not only that, it is also easy to edit text or produce a feedback form using Google Forms. Google Forms are also easier to share with other people. Aside from that as most people have been using gadgets these days, QR code for this feedback form will be generated to ease the process of filling the form.

CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, all parties involved will benefit significantly from this "Art Therapy" Program. The producing of art and the formation of aesthetic experiences that take place on this programme contribute significantly to the improvement of health, to the maturation and growth of the individual, and to the healing and rehabilitation of illness. Activities related to the arts not only promote overall health but also serve as a source of inspiration for happiness. From the viewpoint of healthcare professionals, patients, and possibly the stress they are experiencing, the incorporation of art in this programme has a beneficial impact on society. Additionally, in keeping with the intended goals, art therapy's impact on people with health issues is anticipated to bring about calm. In addition, we will be able to more effectively promote our goals thanks to our collaboration with PPAS, whose name is well-known in and of itself. In light of the fact that our programme considerably improves and generalises each person's talents regardless of their strengths and limitations, we anticipate that the general public will accept it.
