FESTIVAL INTERNACIONAL DE FOTOGRAFÍA Y ARTES VISUALES

En 1997 este fotógrafo obtuvo el premio al Mejor Porfolio en la primera edición de PhotoEspaña. Dos lustros después, el festival celebra su aniversario con un sugerente cartel que lo hace imprescindible. hotoEspaña es la fiesta mundial de la fotografía, una plataforma única donde creadores, jóvenes talentos y profesionales se encuentran cada año. En su décimo aniversario, PHE es un éxito de público con más de cinco millones de visitantes y ha conseguido citar a 2.000 autores en casi 600 muestras diferentes, que han venido a situar la fotografía contemporánea en el lugar que merece dentro del escenario artístico internacional. El fotógrafo Matías Costa, que ha crecido profesionalmente junto a este festival, nos cuenta los entresijos de la edición 2007.

¿Qué le debe a este festival? Resultar premiado en un festival de esta categoría abre puertas o, más exactamente, puede allanar el camino. Los premios sirven, en primera instancia, como constatación pública de algo que en privado uno ya sabe: que ha trabajado duro. ¿Cómo ha transformado PHE el concepto de la fotografía en nuestro país? Ha jugado un papel casi didáctico en cuanto a la difusión de la fotografía entre el gran público. En España había un ligero desajuste evolutivo de la fotografía si lo comparamos con países de nuestro entorno. Ahora, las cosas han cambiado mucho y la fotografía es un arte más en los museos y las ferias. Desde luego, PhotoEspaña tiene mucho que ver en esta percepción popular, aunque el

festival siempre ha contado con contenidos de gran calidad y con argumentos sólidos.

In 1997 this photographer was awarded the prize for Best Portfolio in the first edition of PhotoEspaña. Ten years later, the festival is celebrating its anniversary with a provocative program that makes it a must. hotoEspaña is the world’s most renowned photography festival, a unique platform where young talent and professionals get together every year. On its tenth anniversary PHE is a public success with more than five million visitors. It has managed to attract 2,ooo artists in almost 600 exhibitions and has situated contemporary photography where it belongs within the international artistic scene. The photographer Matías Costa, has grown professionally along with this festival. He tells us the ins and outs of the 2007 Edition.

¿Le falta algo a PHE para ser el mejor festival fotográfico del mundo? En esta década hemos visto casi lo mejor de la fotografía contemporánea y gran parte de la tradicional. No creo que ser el mejor sea su objetivo real, le basta con ser bueno. En definitiva, ¿cuál es el fin último de la fotografía? Lo cierto es que no sabemos el fin, pero el camino nos seduce. ¿Qué no debería perderme en la edición 2007? La retrospectiva de Sylvia Plachy, por la novedad y lo misterioso de sus imágenes.

How has PhotoEspaña transformed the concept of photography in our country? It’s played an almost didactic role insofar as diffusing photography to the public. In Spain there was a slight evolutionary disparity in photography when compared to other countries. Now things have changed and photography is an art form found in museums and festivals. PHE has certainly had an impact on this popular perception, although the festival has always been able to count on good, quality content and solid arguments. Is there anything lacking in PHE that would keep it from being considered the best photography festival in the world? In this decade we’ve seen almost the best of contemporary photography and a big part of traditional photography. I don’t think being the best is its true objective; it’s enough with just being good. In short, what is the final purpose of photography? The truth of the matter is, we don’t know its purpose, but its path seduces us. What shouldn’t I miss in this year’s edition? Sylvia Plachy’s retrospective show, in the Círculo de Bellas Artes, for its curious images. What wouldn’t you miss for anything in the world? The master classes in Aranjuez that are part of the PhotoEspaña Campus program.

This summer it is celebrating its 53rd edition with fifteen performances of theatre, music and dance, dedicated to the classic heroines. Works by Calderón de la Barca, Lope de Vega and Tirso de Molina will be performed in the 8th edition of this dynamic and lively cultural event whose reputation on the Spanish scene increases each year. Actors such as Jacobo Dicenta, Lucía Jiménez and the British Steven Berkoff will grace the town’s stages this year. Included within the Castles Festival which takes place in the towns of Valderrobres and Alcañiz (Teruel), the Festival of Classic Theatre of Alcañiz is one of the youngest of its kind.
