Ernest Gurulé If such a thing were ever done in the state of Utah, you would be hard pressed to shake the proverbial stick and not touch a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as the Mormons. Of the state’s three-million-plus residents, approximately two thirds belong to the Church, a church that is estimated to be gaining a million new members every three years. And, it may come as something of a surprise, but the fastest growing segment of the Church is not who you might expect. Thanks to an almost hyperaggressive but meticulously managed missionary movement, the Church is finding amazing success with its Latino outreach. With a membership of nearly 15 million, one third is now Latino. And while the Church is successfully converting American-born Latinos, it is in Mexico, Central and South America, once unchallenged Catholic strong-

Salazar brings San Luis perspective to Washington

San Luis Valley Series Part IV of VII When Ken Salazar first ran for the United States Senate just over a decade ago, his blue and white yard sign slogan was, “Ken Salazar for Colorado – Fighting for Colorado’s Land, Water & People”. As the state’s former two-term Attorney General and a decade-long natural resources and water lawyer, Salazar brought experience working James Mejia with Colorado’s most complex environmental issues to the campaign. Winning with 51 percent of the vote to Republican Pete Coors’ 46 percent,* the Democrat’s political message around our state’s resources and associated issues seemed to resonate with the Colorado electorate. Along with Bob Menendez the Cuban-American and Democratic Senator from New Jersey elected the same year, Salazar became one of the country’s first Latino senators in 25 years. More than just a moderate political narrative, Salazar brought the viewpoint of growing up in the San Luis Valley where battles over access to land and thirst for scarce water was embedded in the political psyche of the Los Ricones (near Manassa) native. Growing up without electricity in a household with 8 children, Salazar is resourceful and mentally if not physically tied to the land. “My family has been rooted in the Los Rincones settlement – ranching and farming - for over 400 years. Everything in my life from values and philosophy to my hope for the possibility for humanity was formed in the San Luis Valley.” It was this appreciation for natural resources along with his service on the Energy and Natural Resources Committee

Salazar returned to Colorado in 2013 with an expanded resume, unparalleled national experience, and status as the senior active Latino politician in Colorado. He has returned to private practice as the managing attorney for the Denver office of national law firm, Wilmer Hale. He is putting private law experience and money in the bank while taking care of his autistic granddaughter, for whom he and his wife, Hope, are guardians and along with siblings, takes care of his 93 year-old mother, still living in the valley. Salazar has experienced a warm homecoming. For Nolbert Chavez, who served in the state legislature during Salazar’s tenure as Attorney General, Salazar’s impact is broad-reaching. “Ken Salazar has made such a profound impact on our state and this country through his service as Attorney General, the U.S. Senate and as Secretary of the Interior. All of Colorado would be served if he returns to public service again someday.” Meanwhile, political insiders speculate that the next logical step for Salazar’s career would be a run for Colorado Governor in 2018. Asked directly about a potential Governor’s office run, Salazar demures, “Colorado is where my family and heart is. I don’t know yet about my future chapters… I do know this - it has been a great privilege and an absolute joy to serve the people of Colorado. I’m very appreciative for all the opportunities I have been afforded. We’ll see what the world looks like after November 2016.”

Denver searches for new sheriff

Zoo mourns Komodo dragon “Castor” Castor, a 21-year-old Komodo dragon, was humanely euthanized by Denver Zoo staff after exhibiting a slow decline in mobility in his back legs due to arthritis during the last six years. He was an offspring of Naga, a Komodo dragon given to former president George H.W. Bush as a gift from the president of Indonesia. He was among only the second successfully hatched clutch of eggs in the United States. He sired two clutches of his own, producing seven offspring. Denver Zoo is home to three other Komodo dragons, females Kristika and Anika and Castor’s 12-year-old son, Raja.

The City and County of Denver on Monday, July 13 released the official job posting and application process for Denver Sheriff candidates. The national search will be conducted by Hillard Heintze, one of the independent assessment firms hired to deliver a comprehensive report for reform of the Denver Sheriff Department. The selection committee will engage in an aggressive timeline, and barring unforeseen circumstances, the City will announce the appointment of a new sheriff in 90-120 days. “Securing a leader with the necessary talents to drive the reform that members of both the community and the Denver Sheriff Department deserve and want is our top priority,” Mayor Michael Hancock said. The job description calls for a “change agent” with the “ability and past performance to provide strategic direction and vision.” All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply. The majority of commutations were issued to non-violent offenders sentenced for drug crimes under outdated sentencing rules. Cruise ship receives approval for Cuban trips: Carnival Corp has said that has received approval from the United States government to offer trips to Cuba from Miami. The world’s largest cruise shipping company said it was still seeking approval from the Cuban government, but Carnival Corp believes that trips could start early next year. Americans are allowed to travel to Cuba, but only for humanitarian visits, or to visit relatives.

Boko Haram continues attacks on Nigeria: Numerous bombings have killed several people in Nigeria where the military is battling Boko Haram. Many of the bombings have targeted places of worship including an attack on a church. The attack killed five people, including a priest. Among other places that were attacked in Nigeria include a restaurant in a shopping complex where many Muslim families live. Nigeria arrests man connected to bombings: Nigeria has arrested a man who they say was the mastermind of recent bombings in two different cities. The bomb-

ings have killed at least 70 people. The suspect was arrested in Gombe along with two other people at a checkpoint. One of the suspects was shot trying to escape. None of the identities of the suspects has been released.

Ed Hardy designer dies: According to publicist Michele Elyzabeth, Christian Audigier has died. Audigier was a designer best known for being a head designer for Ed Hardy. Audigier suffered from cancer and myelodysplastic syndrome, a bone marrow disease. Audigier also worked for other fashion lines such as Guess, Levi’s, American Outfitters, and Von Dutch. U.S. General calls Russia “greatest threat”: General Joseph Dunford told the Senate Armed Services committee that he believes that Russia presents the greatest threat to the United States during his hearing to be the next Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Dunford continued to say that Russia’s behavior is “nothing short of alarming.” Dunford also said that he believes China is another top challenge.

From Mexico City to Tokyo

I came to Tokyo with ideas related to the long and dynamic history of Japan found in books and movies. Although I have been to other national capitals such as London, Rome and Lima, I found myself comDavid Conde paring Tokyo more to Mexico City because these cities reflect the faces of an overwhelming presence of youth on the move. I was in graduate school when we visited Mexico City for the first time. We took advantage of an $89 roundtrip special and flew from the border town of Matamoros to Mexico City. My grandfather took us across the border to the airport. You could tell that there was nothing greater for him than to have accompanied us.

I sensed it and have regretted not taking him to this day. We traveled from Kansas to attend his funeral a year later. As it turned out, the trip to Mexico City forever changed my career and my life. A fellow with a car in front of the hotel offered to take us to Teotihuacán for a visit to its pyramids and causeways for $10. This major center of the pre-Columbian world also became the doorway to my lifelong adventure in Mesoamerica stretching from our Southwest to the outer limits of Central America and later the ancient civilizations of Peru. Mexico City also became the starting point for our travel in the region including some of the city institutions such as the Chapultepec park and its beautiful castle, the Museum of Anthropology and History, the great Bellas Artes building on Alameda Park where the Ballet Folklorico performances are unforgettable, the Zócalo Square and its National Cathedral and Presidential Palace that houses the historical murals if Diego and Garibaldi square

where Mariachis abound among others. On the edge of what used to be a lake where Mexico City sits is Xochimilco and its gardens that date back to their pre-Columbian ancestry. Mexico City is an old metropolis with a population that is trying to finds its way as the streets are full of vendors, poverty and young people trying to finish school and work in industry. Built on a lake, the city is sinking and many of the new buildings rise on top of ancient ruins. You would normally expect Tokyo to rival Mexico City in its ancient buildings. Tokyo however, lost much of that infrastructure during World War II. Tokyo is truly a modern city with skyscrapers as far as the eye can see. Looking closely at those structures reveals that many of these skyscrapers are actually apartment buildings. Tokyo is a vertical city with a sea of people that like in Mexico City move around on a subway system. Like Mexico City, the

The difference between these two moving populations is however immediately apparent as Japan is a developed country and the Tokyo youth are building great lives for themselves and an economic order where Asia leads. Tokyo offers me a certain comfort that comes from a hospitable and courteous people that go out of their way to help. More than that, on more than one occasion, I thought I saw a relative or a friend on a face in the crowd. I am seduced by the Tokyo youthful population perhaps because it reminds me of my own journey and the possibilities that lie in that experience. The rising young people of Mexico City could not do better than to look to their counterparts in Tokyo that have flourished despite the worst of experiences. Still giving hope after 83 years

Documentary shares a positive message from a veteran of peace Joshua Pilkington It’s a simple, poetic message: “There are underground rivers which in one moment can emerge and transform history. And these rivers are rivers of hope for humanity.” That is the message with which 83-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate Adolfo Pérez Esquivel chooses to lead us on his long journey towards rights, equality and unity in Latin America. “Adolfo Pérez Esquivel: Rivers of Hope” is a documentary that provides not only a straightforward depiction of Latin American history spanning the 60s to the present, but also gives viewers the unique opportunity to hear it from the man on whom the film is based. Argentina was a burgeoning nation under the guidance of President Juan Peron whose form of governance known as “Peronism” focused on social justice, economic independence and political sovereignty. It was a form of governance that attempted to find middle ground between capitalism and communism. The fall of Peron, and Peronism, caused a social uprising in Argentina that would last decades and not reach its conclusion until 2012. It also led to birth of one of the world’s greatest activists: the artist Esquivel. “I was really interested in the theme of problems faced by Latin America,” Esquivel said in Rivers of Hope. “So my art tended towards social expression.” With social change in mind, Esquivel decided to travel Latin America and discover the different cultures and realities within the continent. One of the most enlightening attributes of the documentary was how it tied many of the world’s civil rights movements together. Though separate and in separate nations it is worth noting that movements ranging from

South America to the Caribbean and further north to the United States all took place in the mid-50s to the late 70s and early 80s. Under different leaders and against different foes, nations across the world fought (non-violently and violently) against the powers that be in search of equal liberties. Not lost on Esquivel through his travels, his arrests and the abuses he and his family incurred because of his constant movement for change, was his faith. “Spirituality was always most important for me,” Esquivel said. “That stayed with me all my life.” Though many parts of the documentary cover Esquivel’s travels, the action takes place in Argentina where military conflicts would lead to social uprisings, all of which resulted in the blackest eye of the country’s history. From the late 1960s to the late 70s, thousands of Argentinians were disappeared by military forces. Using live footage the documentary depicts how journalists, activists and other civilians are taken against their will to encampments where they were tortured, raped and killed. The documentary uses also uses news footage to show the desperate mothers that marched on May Square to protest the government and inquire of the whereabouts of their children and grandchildren. The Mothers of May Square, as they came to be known, were a large part of the organized uprising against the military dictatorship. Rivers of Hope also reveals the presence of the United States government in the separate South American movements, almost always fighting alongside the dictatorships. That said, Esquivel never turned his focus on the opposition, rather he aimed to unite Latin America under a single cause. “When our roots are cut, we are lost,” he said. “We need to rediscover who we are because if we don’t know who we are or where we come from, we also don’t know where we’re going. In fact, Mexico is now home to the second largest LDS population outside the United States. “Today,” says Fernando Gomez, “there are 34 different missions in Mexico, from Tijuana to Yucatan, and thirteen temples. There’s also a missionary training center in Mexico City.” Today, approximately 1.3 million Mexicans call themselves Mormon, says the affable and gentlemanly Gomez in a recent phone call. He is a Mexican ex-patriate who now runs the Museum of Mexican Mormon History in Provo, Utah. Piece by piece, he moved it to here four years ago. And each day it receives visitors, sometimes in a tiny trickle, other days in a torrent. But each year, he says, he will have greeted several thousand, mostly Church members and mostly Latino. While he has been a Church member his whole life, he says he isn’t surprised by the surge in new Latino members. “It has to do with faith,” says the 74-year-old Gomez in describing the Church’s allure to Latinos. “People are looking for a better opportunity to increase faithfulness of family.” And, he adds, the Church is has made the effort to welcome new arrivals. Though there are differing views on immigration among the Church’s faithful, it continues to offers shelter to many immigrants. When the shock of being a new country wears off, it also offers English classes. Beside family, the Church’s philosophy on living a clean life holds a great value. It urges its followers to abstain from alcohol, coffee, tea, tobacco, anything with caffeine (which includes beverages like Pepsi and Coca Cola) and illegal drugs. Three percent of Coloradans identify themselves as Church members. But, along the Front Range, from Fort Collins to Pueblo, there are more than 40 churches. The state’s most iconic Church edifice is its Centennial Temple in Arapahoe County. Interestingly, none of these churches is adorned with cross symbols which are seen as symbols of Christ’s death. The Church prefers spires that aim heavenward. The plan the Church has set in place seems to ensure its continued growth and diversity. “When I went to BYU,” recalls Gomez, “there was only one small branch that provided services in Spanish. Letter to the Editor/Nota al Editor Dear Editor, I have enjoyed La Voz over the years and especially articles written by Ernest Gurule and James Mejia. I have intended to write them but I don’t know how to reach them so I am wondering if you can relay the following to them. For Ernest I enjoyed the article written about Taos because I am from Questa which is close to Taos. When people ask me where I am from I tell them from Questa who nobody knows where that is until I tell them it is close to Taos and then everybody knows where that is. Also all the other articles written by Ernest are thought provoking and very educational. In regard to James Mejia his latests article regarding the San Luis Valley because that is close to where I was born and raised. I belong to a book club here at the DAC and recently we reviewed a book about the cancer gene that exists in the San Luis Valley. During that discussion the matter of the Sangre De Cristo land grant was discussed. As you probably know Carlos Beaubien was issued the land grant

and one of the provisions was that he had to encourage people to move to that part of the Country and one of the enducement was to allow the people to use the land forever. I had been following the case for the last 30 or some years the ups and downs. Norman Hagland was one of the people I discussed the case with since he was a member of the investment club at the DAC. Interestingly another member of the book club is Mary Mallarkey which you probably recognize as the author of the three cases involving the Land Grant. According to my understanding of the case as it now stands there is nothing else that can be done. I believe that Judge Alex Martinez analysis of the case in his dissent to one of the findings of the majority express my feelings on this case. Unidos. “Hoy”, dice Fernando Gómez, “hay 34 misiones diferentes en México, desde Tijuana a Yucatán, y trece templos. Hay también un centro de entrenamiento misionero en la Ciudad de México”. Hoy, aproximadamente 1.3 millones de mexicanos se llaman a sí mismos, mormones, dice el amable y caballeroso Gómez en una reciente llamada telefónica. El es un expatriado mexicano que maneja el Museo de Historia Mexicana Mormona en Provo, Utah. Pieza por pieza, el se mudó allí hace cuatro años. Y cada día recibe visitantes, algunas veces en pequeñas cantidades y otros en torrentes. Pero cada día, dice él, ha saludado a varios miles, la mayoría miembros de la iglesia y más que todo latinos. Aun cuando él ha sido miembro de la iglesia toda su vida, el dice que no le sorprende la nueva tracción de los nuevos miembros latinos. “Tiene que ver con la fe”, dice Gómez de 74 años al describir la atracción de la iglesia para los latinos. “La gente está buscando una mejor oportunidad para aumentar la fe de la familia”. Y, dice él, la iglesia ha hecho el esfuerzo de dar la bienvenida a los recién llegados. Aun cuando hay diferentes formas de pensar acerca de la inmigración entre los fieles de la iglesia, ella continúa ofreciendo asilo a muchos inmigrantes. Cuando el shock de estar en un nuevo país se termina, también ofrece clases de inglés. Además de la familia, la filosofía de la iglesia de vivir una vida limpia tiene mucho valor. Pero para Bravo, la iglesia ha sido parte de su vida desde su nacimiento. “Soy mormona”, dice ella en el portal de la web de la iglesia, “porque yo se que el evangelio es la verdad”. Muchos partidarios de la Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints de hoy han tenido mucho éxito. The votes are in and Colorado Rockies fans managed to get three players onto the AllStar team. Shortstop Troy Tulowitzki joins Nolan Arenado and DJ LeMahieu on this year’s All-Star NL team after chalkBRANDON RIVERA ing up a .314 batting average with 46 RBI’s, 19 doubles, 43 runs with 37 game on base streak. Arenado is in a battle for most homeruns this season with 24 and 70 RBI’s and an on base percentage of .329 while DJ LeMahieu has an on base percentage of .365 with 35 RBI’s and 4 homers. While Arenado has been the fire under the team both Tulo and Lemahieu have recently followed suite and the three have been a thorn in opposing pitchers’ side. The Rockies will have a short break until this Friday when they travel to San

Diego to face division rivals the Padres in a three-game series before coming home to host the Texas Rangers for three at Coors Field. In other sports the U.S. Women’s Soccer team are the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup Champions after dismantling Japan 5-2 scoring 4 of their goals in just the first-half. The women’s team has been considered the U.S.’s best womens soccer team in history and their match against Japan last week was the most watched soccer match in U.S. history. In football, Demariyus Thomas and the Denver Broncos are expected to finalize a long-term contact before day’s end today. If uneventful, Thomas will play on a $12.82 million franchise tag. In soccer, the Colorado Rapids defeated the New Salt Lake, 3-1 on Saturday, July 11 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.
