Measure O approved for Nyeland Acres

On Tuesday, February 23, 2016 the County of Ventura Board of Supervisors celebrated the voter approval of the Community Facility District Measure O. On January 26th of this year voters in Nyeland Acres agreed to pay a small annual maintenance and operation fee for a community center and park located at 3334 Santa Clara Avenue. The fee will take place in 2017 and will help revitalize the Nyeland Acres Community Center and Park. In the past year County Supervisor Zaragoza has partnered with various leaders in the community along with local businesses and organizations, public safety and association, and individual contributors. The Community of Nyeland will now have a community center and park to call their own. "I am deeply honored and very happy to see the residents of Nyeland Acres finally have a stake in this matter, more than 26% of the residents came out

to vote ‘YES’. Yes to - I want a safe place for my children to learn and play. Finally a Community Center and Park for the children of Nyeland! It is so important for children and their families to be able to have a place where organizations such as the Boys and Girls Club offer their expertise on leadership and education to become sustainable self-efficient adults, and of course, enjoy the outdoors. This fee will help maintain the Center and Park for many

years to come. I have worked with the community for many years and during this special election I participated to walk and knock on doors, informing the community how important is to have a center and park like this one in Nyeland. We all win in the end.” said, Supervisor Zaragoza.

Cal Lutheran grants to benefit Hispanic students The U.S. Department of Education has designated California Lutheran University a Hispanic-serving institution, which makes it eligible for grants to benefit its growing Latino population and other students. The designation requires that Latinos make up at least 25 percent of full-time undergraduate students, a benchmark Cal Lutheran first reached in the 2013-2014 year. Latinos currently make up 27 percent of Cal Lutheran undergraduates. The number of Hispanic-serving institutions is growing, but Latino student enrollment is still concentrated in a small number of colleges. Thirteen percent of the country’s colleges currently hold the designation. Most of the 435 institutions are public colleges. Less than one-third are private nonprofit colleges like Cal Lutheran. They are split about equally between two- and fouryear institutions. The university is now eligible to apply for grants to increase services that will support academic achievement for Latinos as well as other students. The designation also reduces the university’s costs related to work-study and other programs serving needy and low-income students. Cal Lutheran plans to apply for a grant for a program it is developing to provide additional support for students majoring in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Latino students make up 28 percent of Cal Lutheran’s STEM students, but those who start out in these majors as freshman are less likely to graduate in the majors than other students. To address this, Cal Lutheran

Local heroes of reuse requesting visits By David Goldstein, VCPWA, IWMD

Last month, Huey Young, an 80 year old local hero of reuse, had a terrible fall. Usually, when an 80 year old falls, they risk a broken hip or a broken arm. Mr. Young’s fall was different. He fell from nearly 30 feet. In addition to running a reuse business, The Fix-It Shop, for 45 years in Ventura, Mr. Young was a steeplejack. He repaired and installed items at the tops of flag poles, smoke stacks, radio towers, and other places people far younger and more nimble would never dare to climb. I have known him for decades, and when he was in his 60s and began losing to me in pull-up contests, he conceded, “I have to rely more on equipment and less on strength these days.” Unfortunately, neither his safety equipment nor his amazingly durable strength could save him when a flag pole at a private residence on Solimar Beach snapped at the spot where a bolt went through fiberglass. Thanks to the help of an assistant, Mr. Young landed on a lawn instead of on nearby boulders or a concrete block wall, but he still broke all the ribs on his left side, punctured a lung, fractured his pelvis, broke his shoulder blade, and received a major concussion. He lives behind his repair shop on the Ventura Avenue and complained to me by phone about a steady stream of customers who still knock on his front door, right below the “closed” sign, hoping someone will still open the door and repair their vacuum cleaners, sewing machines, restaurant equipment, or “10,000 other gizmos and gadgets” Mr. Young reports repairing over the years. Mr. Young requests the good, reuse-minded citizens of Ventura

Even the two local ReStores, operated by Habitat for Humanity in Oxnard and Simi Valley, do not repair electronics or appliances donated for reuse. “We accept only new, or gently used condition

These items also include furniture, appliances, building materials, cabinetry, windows, hardware, lumber, tools, flooring, lighting and related home improvement products. Proceeds from the ReStore’s sales benefit Habitat for Humanity, which organizes volunteers and mobilizes resources to build and repair simple, decent housing in partnership with people in need. Habitat for Humanity of Ventura

County hosted a grand opening and ribbon cutting for its new Oxnard ReStore and office location last Saturday, February 27, 2016. The new location is at 1850 Eastman Avenue, in Oxnard. To accept donations of larger items with sufficient value, Habitat volunteers and staff will pick up from homes throughout the county. Keep your “eye on the environment” and visit the heroes of reuse, your local Fix-It Shop, appliance repair store, or ReStore.

Sugar accounts for much of our country’s weight gain and the rise of fatty liver disease. Once upon a time, sugar was mostly relegated to desserts. But now, excessive amounts can be found in our everyday foods and beverages, and it’s taking a toll, according to recently published studies. • The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center exposed high-sugar diets as major risks for cancer, especially breast cancer.

• The Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience journal indicates that sugar may cause not only diabetes and obesity, but also brain defects similar to those triggered by stress or abuse.
 • Sugar accounts for much of our country’s weight gain and the rise of fatty liver disease. “We already knew it was very bad for us, but alarming new

evidence just keeps pouring in,” says nutritionist and juicing pioneer Cherie Calbom, MS, who is known as “The Juice Lady.” “Despite the case against excessive sugar intake, we know its prevalent use remains in things like ketchup, yogurt, canned soup, salad dressing, tomato sauce, bread, granola bars – not to mention soda or dessert-style coffee beverages.”
