OCTOBER • 2022 3 A Note from Jess Welcome to the Diabolic Designs magazine! As a graphic designer, I want to showcase as much of my work as I can in a fun and exciting way. As the “Diabolical Designer” I have handpicked some of my favorite projects. This includes photoshoots of friends and celeberties, graphic design projects, and even the design of this whole magazine spread! Throughout this magazine you’ll learn a bit about me, as well as a bit of the behind-the-scenes looks of various projects. My cover story is about a past DNCE concert, I took photos on behalf of the university yearbook and received a pass straight to the front row. The music and excitement is captured up close and personal. Afterwards, I also was able to experiment with some different photography styles. I hope you enjoy reading this story. I’m excited for this magazine and thank you for picking it up.

4 DIABOLIC DESIGNS The Jade ROAST This project was created with a small business in mind, as the brand would need to have simple but distinct look. I imaged a plant cafe named The Jade Roast. To set the cozy and organic vibe of the cafe, I created a handdrawn logo with a simple design.

Title DNCE TAKES THE STAGE 6 DIABOLIC DESIGNS Jess FURLIPA 50mm • f/5.6 • ISO 3200 This photoshoot is one of the coolest I have ever had the chance to do. I was asked to take photos of the spring DNCE concert on behalf of a university’s yearbook. I received a pass that allowed me to snap photos right in front of the crowd. The music and excitement is captured up close and personal. Rocking out with DNCE and Joe Jonas as their lead singer was amazing. I also got photos of the opening band, The Burgeoning. The fog and dark atmosphere was challenge for snapping photos, but I still managed to capture the high energy of the event. Afterwards, I also experimented with some different photography styles like overlays and double exposure. What an amazing and insane experience.

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see” QA with FURLIPA QA - Edgar Degas How do you start a project? “My starting approach depends on the project. For most design projects I try to plan the end goal first and work backwards. I ask questions like “What does this project need to portray?” or “Who is the consumer?” Asking questions like this puts me into the mindset of designing with something more concrete in mind.” What’s your creative process? “I tend to use mood boards to help keep me on track. I start off with some lookbook ideas on what direction I want the photoshoot or design to go it and go frrom there. I like coming up with colors and fonts in this stage too, but I always leave those things open to change as the project starts to take form.” Where do you find inspiration? “My inspiration comes from all areas. For photoshoots, I love to plan ahead with what will fit my model the best. Sometimes I plan an elegant photoshoot, while other times I look for something more bold and exciting. I think one of my greatest achievements is when my models are enjoying themselves. I look for ways to make my models smile and feel comfortable with the shoot. For other projects, such as stickers or posters, I try to work with the audienc pictured in my mind. What colors, typography, and styles fit best? Is my audience someone more chic and edgy? Is my audience more girly or feminine? If the design is catered to me, what am I hoping to convey with the project? Then I take the ideas I have whirling in my mind and hit the ground running.” Jess 18 DIABOLIC DESIGNS
