STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION FOR THE WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 7/REFLEXIÓN MAYORDOMÍA PARA LA SEMANA DEL 7 DE SEPTIEMBRE As we review and reflect upon the readings for any given Sunday, it is good to try to connect what is proclaimed with our lives and our understanding of stewardship. Sometimes it may be an entire passage, like the Parable of the Good Samaritan. Other times it may be just a phrase, or even a single word. In today’s first reading from Ezekiel, God declares, “You, son of man, I have appointed watchman for the House of Israel.” Ezekiel lived and prophesied some 600 years before the birth of Christ. If we listen carefully and attentively to Holy Scripture, we may notice that Jesus almost always refers to Himself as the Son of Man. Here is a reference to that phrase centuries before He came. The other key word in that sentence is the word “watchman.” We may think of a watchman as a kind of security guard, but that is not exactly what the word meant in Ezekiel’s time. It was synonymous with “steward.” This is God declaring that Jesus, the Son of Man, is appointed the steward of Israel and all of us as well. The appointment is from God, not from a human. We are called in the same way, by God, to be good stewards. Read more at www.thecatholicsteward.com.

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Our Lady of Fatima,/ Queridos parroquianos y amigos de Nuestra Señora de Fátima, Continuing my theme of preparing for Mass, I want to continue with composure. Last week I wrote about how composure allows us to quiet our minds and our souls before Mass. There are practical consequences of being composed for the celebration of the Mass. It shows in how we act and in how we participate. Being composed at Mass brings great dividends. One of the ways to think of how composed we are is to try and view our congregation through the eyes of an unbeliever or as someone who has no idea what we do in church. What would that person see? Would they see people flop into a pew like onto a couch at home or entering church mindful that this building represents heaven to us? Would see a Sign of the Cross that is haphazard and careless or something intentional? Will they see people slouched and inattentive or with posture indicating something incredible is happening? Will they see people shuffle up to Communion focused on those around them or processing toward their King and their God? An easy assessment for composure is: where do my eyes land at Mass? The gaze directed to the altar is exactly as profound as the composure from which it comes. We do not come to church to watch Mass or listen to it; we are not spectators. We come to serve God. When we are composed, our actions at Mass reflect that and we enhance our participation. When we are not composed for Mass we may hear a word or some particular action may stick out for us but that is barely participation. Collecting our minds’ thoughts allows us to enter the stream of the Mass and be caught up in the current so to participate as fully as possible this side of heaven. When we are composed we sing. We see the songs not as something cute to fill the space but as integral to our worship and aid our own participation. We kneel and stand and sit with greater dignity when we are composed. Most importantly, when we are composed the Lord is more able to work in us through the Mass.

Venimos a servir a Dios.
