HISTORY OF PALAWAN EXPLORE PALAWAN TODAY!

A

rchaeological studies have revealed that this island has

been inhabited for at least 50,000 years and it is commonly believed that the first settlers probably came from Borneo but the island’s central location among many different cultures has resulted in influences from many other places. Around 220 – 263 AD it is recorded that “little dark people” were driven south out of China and some of these displaced people almost certainly settled on the island probably being the direct ancestors of Palawan’s Batak tribe. The 12th century saw the arrival of Malay immigrants followed by Indonesians in the 13th century. Spain later claimed the territory until it came under American rule in 1902. Puerto Princesa was declared to be the capital city in 1903. During the Second World War it was invaded by the Japanese and Puerto Princesa was the site of the infamous Palawan massacre when prisoners of war were herded into petrol filled trenches and burned to death.

Page 3

Today the island is a much more peaceful place but still demonstrates amazing cultural diversity with over 87 different cultural groups and 52 different

languages and dialects being spoken the most common being Tagalog. Roman Catholicism is the most widely practiced

religion but, with such cultural diversity, many other religions are also followed. Palawan played a significant role throughout the years, especially during those difficult times of colonization from one colonizer to another, long before it was known as “The Best Island in the World” and a popular tourist destination. There are many stunning islands in this region of the world, but Palawan Island seems to meet the expectations of the majority of people seeking a genuine tropical paradise.

MIMAROPA REGION

RELIGION The Predominant Religion in Palawan is Roman Catholicism. 71% of the people in Palawan are Catholic. The religion is brought by Ferdinand Magellan In the Spanish Colonial Period. There are churches around the province such as San Agustin Parish Church, Malbato Church and Immaculate Conception Church. There are several muslims in Palawan due to many early Malay settlers that are bringing over their religion. The biggest muslim church in palawan which they call mosque is the Grand Mosque Palawan Islamic Center.

BELIEFS

Page 4

Ingasiq, which translates to "kindness," is the guiding concept of the Palawan people. All of their behaviors are motivated by this, which highlights how crucial it is

to act kindheartedly and sympathetically toward others. They refer to their ceremonies, prayers, chanting, and healing dances as adat et kegurangurangan, or "the

of the ancestors." customs The universe is vertical and divided into fourteen different strata for the Palawan people. Beljan (shamans) have the ability to ascend to these higher planes in order to "cure the world" and restore cosmic harmony. Shamans are not viewed as extraordinary or holy individuals, but rather as persons who can communicate with superhuman creatures while tranced or dreaming. They have the ability to see within a patient's body and remove pollutants that are ailing them. They frequently have a great deal of knowledge about using therapeutic plants. The body's "life force" must be in balance with the body for there to be good health (kuruduwa). The absence of kuruduwa causes a disruption that leaves the body open to disease and attacks from evil entities.
