Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano

LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Brother and Sisters, With the great Feast of Christmas just around the corner we are blessed this weekend to have our new chief shepherd, Bishop Kevin Vann, visit and celebrate the 11:00 AM Mass this Sunday morning. One of the early Church Apostolic Fathers, St. Ignatius of Antioch, wrote that, “where the Bishop is there is the Church.” And so it is for us this weekend. The presence of our new bishop is a powerful reminder to all of us that we are tied to a larger community of faith called a ‘diocese.’ As shepherd of our Diocese, Bishop Vann now is given the responsibility to ‘confirm the faith’ of God’s people in this growing and vibrant local Church. Over the nearly 40 years of service as priest in the Diocese of Orange, I have been privileged to serve under all of our previous bishops. I know that I’m getting older when our present Bishop is younger than I am! It was a great joy for me to be present with nearly 5000 faithful in the Bren Center on the 10th of December to witness the ‘seating’ of the fourth Bishop of Orange. Over the intervening years from the establishment of our Diocese in 1976 to the present, we have witnessed phenomenal growth in our local Church. Much of that growth and vitality has come through the cultural and ethnic diversity that has so enriched our Diocese over the years. This has indeed been an incomparable blessing for us as a local community of faith. As we celebrate the Feast of the Lord’s Nativity this week, let us be grateful for the ‘gift’ of a new Bishop from the Lord. Let us pray that the Lord grant him wisdom and endurance to truly be a faithful and loving shepherd of the flock that is now entrusted to his care. May our Christmas rejoicing be a time for all of us to give thanks to the God who is the giver of all gifts! As we begin this new week in the Lord, let us commend to his mercy all those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. May they be at peace. Always forward! Msgr. Art

One of the privileges of a Basilica Church is the honor to display the Coat of Arms of the reigning Pope over the threshold of its doors. Because of the intimate relationship between all Basilica churches and the See of Peter, this bond is reflected in the use of the papal coat of arms. Thanks to the generosity of a parishioner we were able to acquire the new Coats of Arms that now grace the thresholds leading into the Basilica Church. The Coat of Arms is that of His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI. When a new pope is elected, the Arms of the reigning pontiff will replace the present one.

¡Siempre adelante! Mons. Art

¡VEN Y PARTICIPA, SE PARTE DE TU COMUNIDAD! Se necesitan personas como tú en: EQUIPO DE CATEQUESIS BAUTISMAL, RICA: RITO DE INICIACION CRISTIANA PARA ADULTOS SACRAMENTOS PARA ADULTOS, CATEQUISTA PARA NIÑOS LECTOR, MINISTRO EXTRAORDINARIO DE LA EUCARISTIA, UJIER ¡Anímate a compartir tus dones y fe! Llame a la oficina para el Min. Hispano 234-1360, x:362.
