It is a combina on of different tradi ons celebrated during the 9 days before Christmas in the countries where our parish devo ons originated. One of the common element of the posada is the Manger Scene, which is the main focus of the celebra on. Join us today at 7:30 pm in Chapel Hall to con nue the celebra on.

Mary Mother of God Mass

The Religious Educa on Program will be on Christmas Break beginning on Wednesday, December 25th. Classes will resume on Thursday, January 2nd.

This year the Solemnity of Mary The Mother of God is Wednesday, January 1, 2014. There will be a 5:30 pm Vigil Mass, 10:30 am & 12:00 pm Mass. Following the 12:00pm Spanish Mass there will be a procession to Chapel Hall in honor of the Virgin of the Cloud that will include a light recep on.

Junior High School Youth Group The Church of St. Bernard is forming a Junior High School Youth Group for students in 7th and 8th grades. The kick -off mee ng will be on Friday, December 27th at 7:00 pm in the Recrea on Room, to discuss the plans for the group. All 7th and 8th grade students are welcome to join us. Fr. Morris will be direc ng the group with the assistance of Gloria Enciso. Any parents who are interested in helping with the coordina on of this new parish group are welcome to a end the mee ng or speak to Fr. Morris 3

Blessing of Toys There will be a Blessing of Toys at the 9:00 a.m. Children’s Liturgy on Sunday, January 5th, the Feast of the Epiphany (the Feast of the Three Kings). The children are invited to bring one of their Christmas presents - a small toy, game, book or stuffed animal to be blessed that day.

St. Bernard’s Capital Campaign Update So far over $527,108 has been pledged to the St. Bernard’s Capital Campaign from 253 families with an average pledge of $2,000.22. We have received $148,077 in payments. We hope to raise an addi onal $33,000 to cover the total cost of the renova on which is $560,000. Thank you so much to all parishioners who have made a pledge. If you have not already had a chance to return your pledge card please do so as soon as possible. Please consider a sacrificial pledge to the St. Bernard’s Capital Campaign to make all needed repairs. Pledge cards can be picked up at the back of the Church or at the Rectory.

El Programa de Educación Religiosa estará en vacaciones de Navidad empezando el miercoles, 25 de diciembre. Las clases comenzaran el jueves, 2 de enero.

Este año, el 1ro de enero del 2014, se celebra la Solemnidad de María, Madre de Dios. Habrá misa de vigilia a las 5:30 pm, 10:30 am y 12:00 pm. Después de la misa hispana se hará una procesión hacia el Chapel Hall en honor a la Virgen de la Nube la cual incluirá refrigerios.

Reunión de la Escuela Intermedia La iglesia de San Bernardo está formando un grupo de la escuela intermedia para los estudiantes en los grados sép mo y octavo. Nuestra primera reunión será el viernes 27 de diciembre a las 7:00 pm en la sala de recreo, para discu r los planes para el grupo. Each year as birthdays roll around, children hear the family lore about their welcome into the world, and well they should. Our entrance into and exit out of earthly life deserve fanfare. We are, after all, the children of God, created out of love, saved by love, and called to live in the spirit of that love throughout our lives. There is no greater story than that. Pass it along. MONDAY, DECEMBER 23 MEMORIAL OF JOHN OF KANTY, PRIEST Failure doesn’t have to be a deal-breaker What happens when you’re a good person and try your hardest—but things still don’t work out? Ask Saint John Cantius (1390-1473), also known as John of Kanty. A devout person, humble, generous, and a good teacher, his students and later his parishioners admired him. Faculty politics, however, forced him out of his university position, and he didn’t do very well at his next job as a parish priest. Yet while he was still alive, people considered him a saint. At times your best efforts may not meet with the outward signs of success, but in the eyes of God and people of good will they are always worth it. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 24 ADVENT WEEKDAY May all in Syria be at peace Need a great trivia question? Ask where the remains of Zechariah, the father of John the Baptist, are said to be buried. Give up? How about in a mosque in Aleppo, Syria? Considering the site goes back to the Christian era of Roman rule in Syria, it could well be the case. Sadly, this World Heritage Site is under threat from the unending violence of the Syrian civil war. A minaret at the mosque built in 1090 was destroyed during fighting in April 2013. Pray for peace in Syria—for the sake of the living and the dead. TODAY’S READINGS: Morning: 2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16; Luke

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 25 SOLEMNITY OF THE NATIVITY OF THE LORD Take a chance on God Whether you have the basic Nativity set—the Holy Family and maybe an angel—or the full cast of magi, animals, and the rest, the Christmas crèche, in your home or at church, testifies to the story of the wondrous birth of Jesus but also to something just as amazing: God becoming human in the first place. In a real way God took a huge risk in creating the world and giving it freedom—even to turn away from God. God took another risk by giving creation God’s only child whom people could accept or reject. Yet the Creator had faith in humanity. The least we can do is return that trust. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 26 FEAST OF STEPHEN, THE FIRST MARTYR There’s got to be a morning after It’s a bit sobering that the day after Christmas we commemorate the first Christian martyr, Saint Stephen. The church offers a quick wake-up call from the reverie of celebrating the birth of the Savior. Stephen’s story reminds us of the destiny that awaits the newborn prince of peace—accused falsely, unjustly condemned, dying with his heart focused on God and a prayer of forgiveness for his accusers on his lips. Yet we still rejoice in the Christmas season because we know that God’s saving grace is more powerful than human evil. TODAY’S READINGS: Acts of the Apostles 6:8-10; 7:54-59; Matthew

FRIDAY, DECEMBER 27 FEAST OF JOHN, APOSTLE, EVANGELIST Leaders in more ways than one One of Jesus’ first disciples, the Apostle John formed with his brother James and Saint Peter the “inner circle” of apostles: the people Christ had with him at many important moments. These three also acted like “typical” apostles in other ways, too. They asked some dumb questions, fell asleep on Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane, and wanted him to put down their enemies while raising them to the highest positions of status. Apostles like John serve as examples because of both their greatness and their very human limitations. Can you let God transform your weaknesses into strengths? SATURDAY, DECEMBER 28 FEAST OF THE HOLY INNOCENTS, MARTYRS Suffer the innocents As we celebrate Christ’s coming into the world, we also remember the Holy Innocents of Jesus’ time—and our own. The Gospel of Matthew recounts how King Herod ordered the killing of young children around Bethlehem, fearful that among them was the Messiah. Herod used violence to address this perceived threat to his dominance. To him, the resulting deaths were incidental to the goal of maintaining power. This story continues today in many parts of the world, where people suffer and die as those in power strive to keep it. Yet in the coming of Christ, we have a powerful counter-narrative, one in which love, not violence, is the final word. Let’s join in prayer today for holy innocents around the world.
