The Readings and their Message Habakkuk 1:2-3; 2:2-4 This is the first time in Israelite literature that a human being dares to question God and hold him accountable for his government of the world. The prophet does not understand how God can allow so much abuse, oppression and violence. Violence seems to be a key word for this prophet and does not refer primarily to war, but to the inhuman treatment of some people at the hands of others. The complaint of the prophet is about God’s apparent passiveness in the face of Judah’s evil, abuses, and injustice. God’s answer is that the promise of comfort and standing by his people will be fulfilled in God’s own time. 2 Timothy 1:6-8, 13-14 Trials, persecutions, or obstacles are not considered signs of failure in ministry. The gospel’s message is safe because it depends on God and not on the witness; this is why the witness should not be afraid or shy to proclaim the message. Honor, one of the central values in the Mediterranean culture, demands response to the privilege of God’s call with the appropriate attitudes: enthusiasm, courage, and determination in witness. Luke 17:5-10 These three instructions have the common denominator of service to the Kingdom, which is only possible in faith. A solid faith where God is the source of mercy and all gifts means for the disciples that their attitudes and actions must be in accordance with that call. Not doing this could cause scandal for some, disappointment for others, and rejection of the message. By carrying out the demands of discipleship to which they have been called by the grace of God, the disciples are just fulfilling their obligation.

From September 28th through November 6th, you are invited to jjoin other Catholics for 40 Days for Life—40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion. “How long, O LORD?” (Habakkuk 1:2). With Habakkuk’s question echoing across twenty-six hundred years, Respect Life Sunday finds all life claiming sanctuary in our hearts: unborn infant, senior citizen, immigrant and refugee, imprisoned and addicted, people burdened with illness and disabilities of body, mind, or spirit. Even Mother Earth, Pope Francis notes in Laudato Si’, bears scars of disrespect for the life she nurtures and sustains. Life is still threatened, as in Habakkuk’s day, with ruin and misery, “destruction and violence, . . . strife and clamorous discord” (see 1:3). Since our efforts so often seem ineffective, we “unprofitable servants” cry with the apostles, “Increase our faith” (Luke 17:10, 5). But Jesus’ reply might be paraphrased, “Not quantity—quality.” Next weekend marks the Jubilee Year of Mercy’s special devotion to Mary, whose willingness to shelter Jesus in her womb and stand at the foot of his cross bears witness to the qualities that Jesus expects our faith to manifest: the willingness to trust, to risk, and to dare to speak up for life. -Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. El jubileo de la Devoción Mariana comienza el próximo sábado

Del 28 de Septiembre al 6 de Noviembre, les invitamos a unirse a otros Católicos a 40 días por la Vida, 40 días de oración y ayuno para poner fin al aborto. También están invitados a orar pacíficamente durante una vigilia de 40 días en las afueras de Planned Parenthood, 330 S. Garfield Ave, Alhambra (entre Garfield Ave y Beacon St) y también para ayudar a difundirlo en la comunidad.

¿Hasta cuándo, Señor? (Habacuc 1:2). Esta pregunta de Habacuc se sigue escuchando aún después de dos mil seiscientos años; este Domingo de Respeto a la Vida exhorta a que la vida requiere de un santuario en nuestros corazones: del bebé que está por nacer, las personas de la tercera edad, los inmigrantes, los refugiados, las personas encarceladas, los adictos, las personas enfermas o con discapacidades del cuerpo, la mente o el espíritu. Aún la Madre Tierra, como lo menciona el Papa Francisco en Laudato Si’, tiene marcadas las cicatrices de la falta de respeto por la vida que ella nutre y sustenta. La vida todavía está amenazada, así como lo menciona Habacuc hoy, con ruina y miseria (destrucción y violencia, . . peleas y riñas” (ver 1:3). Ya que muy frecuentemente nuestros esfuerzos parecen ineficaces, nosotros “servidores improductivos” gritamos con los apóstoles “auméntanos la fe” (Lucas 17:10, 5). Quizá interpretando la respuesta de Jesús “No es la cantidad, sino la calidad”. El próximo fin de semana, dentro del Año Jubilar de la Misericordia, se celebrará la devoción a María cuya voluntad de recibir a Jesús en su vientre y estar al pie de la cruz da testimonio de las cualidades que Jesús espera que nuestra fe manifieste: la voluntad de confiar, de arriesgar y de atreverse a hablar a favor de la vida. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Las lecturas y su mensaje

Habacuc 1:2-3; 2:2-4

Es la primera vez en la literatura israelita en que un ser humano se atreve a cuestionar a Dios y a pedirle cuentas de su gobierno. El profeta no comprende cómo Dios puede permitir tanto abuso, opresión y violencia. La violencia parece ser una palabra clave en este profeta y se refiere principalmente, no a la guerra, sino al trato inhumano de algunas personas a manos de otras. La queja del profeta es por qué Dios parece quedarse pasivo ante el mal de Judá, los abusos y las injusticias. La respuesta de Dios es que la promesa de consuelo y de estar con su pueblo permanece en pie y se cumplirá en el tiempo de Dios.

2 Timoteo 1:6-8, 13-14

Las penalidades, las persecuciones y los obstáculos no se consideran señales de fracaso en el ministerio. El mensaje evangélico está seguro, porque depende de Dios y no del testigo; por eso, el testigo no debería sentir temor ni timidez en proclamar el mensaje. El honor, que es uno de los valores centrales en la cultura mediterránea, requiere que se responda al honor de la llamada de Dios con actitudes apropiadas: entusiasmo, valor, determinación en el testimonio.

Lucas 17:5-10

Estas tres instrucciones tienen como denominador común el servicio al reino, que solo es posible desde la fe. La fe firme en que Dios es la fuente de la misericordia y de todos los dones implica para los discípulos actitudes y acciones acordes con esa llamada. El no hacerlo puede provocar escándalo en algunos o desánimo en otros y rechazo del mensaje. Al seguir las exigencias del discipulado al que han sido llamados por la gracia de Dios, solo están cumpliendo con su obligación.
