«Be glad and joyful»

Today, we celebrate the reality of the Mystery of Salvation. A reality that we evince in the “Creed” and which is very soothing: «I believe in the communion of saints». All saints, who have already passed from death into eternal life, from the Virgin Mary on, form a wholeness: they represent the Church of the Blessed, whom Jesus congratulates: «Fortunate are those with a pure heart, for they shall see God!» (Mt 5:8). At the same time, they join us in communion, too. Because the saints already enjoy the eternal vision of God, they cannot be united to us through faith and hope; but, they can, instead, be united to us through charity. «So faith, hope, love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love» (1Cor 13:13). Charity understood as that kind of love that links us, through them, to the same Father, to the very same Christ Redeemer and to the same Holy Spirit. The kind of love that makes them solidary and solicitous with us. Therefore, it is not that we venerate the saints only because of their exemplarity. There is a stronger reason than that: to be united in Spirit with the whole Church invigorated by the practice of the fraternal charity. Because of this deep and profound unity we must feel close to all those saints that, before us, have believed what we now believe, have waited for what we are now waiting and, mostly, have loved God Father and their brothers, men also seeking the imitation of Christ’s love. The saint apostles, the saint martyrs, the saint confessors, who have lived through history are, therefore, our brothers and our intercessors; on them, these prophetical words of Jesus have been fulfilled: «Fortunate are you, when people insult you and persecute you and speak all kinds of evil against you because you are my followers. Be glad and joyful, for a great reward is kept for you in God» (Mt 5:11-12). The treasures of their sanctity are like family assets, which we can rely upon. These are the treasures in heaven, which Jesus invites us to store up (cf. Mt 6:20). As the Vatican Council II asserts, «So by their fraternal concern is our weakness greatly helped» (Lumen gentium, 49). Almighty God, we thank you for those who have gone on before us, pioneers in faith and ministry, thought, word and deed. We thank you for their example of living a Christ like life We know that they were no more perfect than you and I, but we all are your children. Help us to remember when we are running the race of life, that all these people stand by us, cheering us on, praying for us, and loving us. Also, Lord in your compassion, comfort those who are grieving the loss of their saint(s). Comfort the churches. Comfort the Pastors. Comfort your people. Amen.

ALL SAINTS AND ALL SOULS DAY Everybody knows the secular holiday of Halloween; however, not everybody knows it derives from a holy day, All Saints’ Day on Nov. 1, which is followed by All Souls’ day on Nov. 2. The root word of Halloween - ‘’hallow’’ - means ‘’holy.’’ The suffix “een” is an abbreviation of “evening.” It refers to the Eve of All Hallows, the night before the Christian holy day that honors saintly people of the past. All Saints is a celebration of the communion of saints, those people we believe are in heaven, through good works and God’s grace. All Souls’ Day is a day to pray for all souls. Among Catholics, prayers are offered for those in purgatory, waiting to get into heaven. On All Souls’ Day, some Catholic churches have a Book of the Dead, in which parishioners have an opportunity to write the names of relatives to be remembered. “That’s placed near the altar.” “That’s done all through November. It’s an All Souls’ tradition.” More than a thousand years ago in Ireland and Britain, a common custom of Christians was to come together on the eve of the feast of All Hallows Day to ask for God’s blessing and protection from evil in the world. Often, they would dress in costumes of saints or evil spirits and act out the battle between good and evil around bonfires. That’s the source of the modern observance of Halloween. In the Catholic Church, Nov. 1 is normally a holy day of obligation, when all Catholics are expected to attend Mass. This year, that’s not the case, since it falls on a Saturday. “All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day are related, but they are two separate celebrations.” “On All Saints’ Day there’s a call to live as saints, to remind us how we’re supposed to live. On All Souls’ Day, we’re talking about all souls and asking God’s mercy for them. We’re talking about those people who have died before us, and their process of getting to heaven, through Christ.” All Saints’ Day emanates from early Christian celebrations of martyrs in the Eastern Church. “It has its roots all the way back to the fourth century,” he said. We celebrate today the solemnity of All Saints. This invites us to turn our gaze to the immense multitude of those who have already reached the blessed land, and points us on the path that will lead us to that destination.

«Alegraos y regocijaos»

Hoy celebramos la realidad de un misterio salvador expresado en el “credo” y que resulta muy consolador: «Creo en la comunión de los santos». Todos los santos, desde la Virgen María, que han pasado ya a la vida eterna, forman una unidad: son la Iglesia de los bienaventurados, a quienes Jesús felicita: «Bienaventurados los limpios de corazón, porque ellos verán a Dios» (Mt 5,8). Al mismo tiempo, también están en comunión con nosotros. La fe y la esperanza no pueden unirnos porque ellos ya gozan de la eterna visión de Dios; pero nos une, en cambio el amor «que no pasa nunca» (1Cor 13,13); ese amor que nos une con ellos al mismo Padre, al mismo Cristo Redentor y al mismo Espíritu Santo. El amor que les hace solidarios y solícitos para con nosotros. Por tanto, no veneramos a los santos solamente por su ejemplaridad, sino sobre todo por la unidad en el Espíritu de toda la Iglesia, que se fortalece con la práctica del amor fraterno. Por esta profunda unidad, hemos de sentirnos cerca de todos los santos que, anteriormente a nosotros, han creído y esperado lo mismo que nosotros creemos y esperamos y, sobre todo, han amado al Padre Dios y a sus hermanos los hombres, procurando imitar el amor de Cristo. Los santos apóstoles, los santos mártires, los santos confesores que han existido a lo largo de la historia son, por tanto, nuestros hermanos e intercesores; en ellos se han cumplido estas palabras proféticas de Jesús: «Bienaventurados seréis cuando os injurien, y os persigan y digan con mentira toda clase de mal contra vosotros por mi causa. Alegraos y regocijaos, porque vuestra recompensa será grande en los cielos» (Mt 5,11-12). Los tesoros de su santidad son bienes de familia, con los que podemos contar. Éstos son los tesoros del cielo que Jesús invita a reunir (cf. Mt 6,20). Como afirma el Concilio Vaticano II, «su fraterna solicitud ayuda, pues, mucho a nuestra debilidad» (Lumen gentium, 49). Esta solemnidad nos aporta una noticia reconfortante que nos invita a la alegría y a la fiesta.

Santo sin premio, santo para no ofenderte, santo para servir mejor a los demás. Señor, en el día de hoy, que recordamos y celebramos la memoria de todos los Santos, ayúdame a acercarme más a Ti. A ellos les ruego que pidan al Espíritu, me conceda los dones necesarios para ser mejor. No porque yo merezca algo, Sino para que mi alabanza llegue a Ti, más plena. Señor, perdóname, por mis faltas y pecados, por todo lo que podía haber hecho y no hice, por todo lo que podía haber servido y no serví, por todo lo que he desaprovechado. LIBRO DE LA VIDA (BOOK OF LIFE). En la entrada de la iglesia tenemos el Libro de la Vida (Book of Life) donde antes de la misa pueden escribir los nombres de sus seres queridos que han fallecido éste año. Estaremos rezando por ellos en todas las misas durante el mes de noviembre. ADORACIÓN. La adoración del Santísimo en la capilla de San Miguel continúa el próximo martes 3 de noviembre de 7:00 a.m. a 6:00 p.m. LA SEGUNDA COLECTA del próximo domingo 8 de noviembre será para la electricidad y el mantenimiento de la iglesia. Halloween deriva de All hallow’s eve, expresión del inglés antiguo que significa ‘víspera de todos los santos’, ya que se refiere a la noche del 31 de octubre, víspera de la Fiesta de Todos los Santos. Está instituida en honor a los Santos, conocidos y desconocidos. El Papa Gregorio IV ordenó en el año 835, que el mundo cristiano honre a todos los santos del cielo en esta fecha. Y creen que Gregorio IV eligió esta fecha porque coincidía con una de las cuatro grandes fiestas de los pueblos germanos, y la política de la Iglesia en esos años era reemplazar y eliminar todos los ritos paganos. La Iglesia llama “Santos” a aquellas personas que dedicaron su vida a seguir el ejemplo de Jesucristo y fueron “canonizados”, o sea declarados oficialmente santos por el Sumo Pontífice. Al día siguiente, 2 de noviembre, se conmemora el “Día de los fieles difuntos” o “Día de los Muertos”, también es una celebración cristiana, donde se reza por el alma que dejaron la vida terrenal. En muchos países latinoamericanos, estas dos fechas se consideran como ‘días no laborables’. La Iglesia Católica, celebra el Oficio de Difuntos y las Misas son de Réquiem, excepto cuando el 2 de noviembre cae en domingo, pues no se puede celebrar misa de exequias o de difuntos en domingo. “Las almas del Purgatorio, declara el Concilio de Trento, son socorridas por los sufragios de los fieles, y señaladamente por el sacrificio del altar”. Y la razón es que, en la Santa Misa el sacerdote ofrece oficialmente a Dios el precio de las almas, la Sangre del Salvador. Jesús mismo, bajo las especies de pan y vino, que recuerdan al Padre el Sacrificio del Gólgota, ora para que se aplique su virtud expiadora a esas almas. Asistamos en este día al Santo Sacrificio de la Misa, En él pide la Iglesia a Dios conceda a los difuntos, que no pueden valerse a sí mismos la remisión de todos sus pecados, y el eterno descanso.
