Today, we celebrate the first Sunday of Lent, and this “strong” liturgical time is a spiritual path leading us to participate in the great mystery of the death and resurrection of Christ. John Paul II says «Each year, the Lenten Season is set before us as a good opportunity for the intensification of prayer and penance, opening hearts to the docile welcoming of the divine will. During Lent, a spiritual journey is outlined for us that prepares us to relive the Great Mystery of the Death and Resurrection of Christ. This is done primarily by listening to the Word of God more devoutly and by practicing mortification more generously, thanks to which it is possible to render greater assistance to those in need». Lent and today’s Gospel teach us that life is a path leading us to Heaven. But, to deserve it, we must first overcome our temptations. «Then the Spirit led Jesus into the desert that He be put to the test by the devil» (Mt 4:1). By allowing him to be tempted, Jesus wanted to show us how we can fight and overcome our temptations: with our trust in God and in prayer, through grace and fortitude. Temptations may be described as the “enemies of the soul”. In fact, they can be summarized and determined by three aspects. In the first place, “the world”: «order these stones to turn into bread» (Mt 4:3). It implies living to possess material things only. Secondly, “the devil”: «if you kneel and worship me» (Mt 4:9). It conveys the greed for power. And, last but not least, “the flesh”: «throw yourself down» (Mt 4:6), which means placing our confidence only in our body. St. Thomas Aquinas explains it better when saying that «the cause of temptations are the causes of concupiscence: the pleasures of the flesh, a drive for glory and the lust for power». TODAY’S second collection is for the electricity and the maintenance of the church. Thank you. THE SHEPHERDS OF CHRIST ASSOCIATES will have their monthly prayer meeting this Sunday, March 9th at 4:00 p.m. in the St. Michael Chapel. The Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament in the St. Michael Chapel continues next Tuesday, March 11th from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. Fast and Abstinence. Good Friday and Ash Wednesday are the major days for fasting in general for those who have reached the age 18 and are not yet 60. Abstinence means no meat on those days for those who are age 14 [or over]. General Canon Law says that all Fridays are days of abstinence. The US rules for abstinence from meat include all Fridays during Lent; Fast (small meals, no snacks) and Abstinence (as in universal rules — no meat) on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS are held every Friday starting with the Pro-Life Rosary at 6:00 p.m. and the Stations of the Cross at 6:30 p.m. followed by the Adoration and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The Spanish community will have the Stations of the Cross around the school grounds. CHANGE IN MASS SCHEDULE. “JUNTOS CONSTRUYENDO EL REINO DE DIOS”

Jesús fue llevado por el Espíritu al desierto para ser tentado Hoy celebramos el primer domingo de Cuaresma, y este tiempo litúrgico “fuerte” es un camino espiritual que nos lleva a participar del gran misterio de la muerte y de la resurrección de Cristo. Nos decia Juan Pablo II que «cada año, la Cuaresma nos propone un tiempo propicio para intensificar la oración y la penitencia, y para abrir el corazón a la acogida dócil de la voluntad divina. Ella nos invita a recorrer un itinerario espiritual que nos prepara a revivir el gran misterio de la muerte y resurrección de Jesucristo, ante todo mediante la escucha asidua de la Palabra de Dios y la práctica más intensa de la mortificación, gracias a la cual podemos ayudar con mayor generosidad al prójimo necesitado». La Cuaresma y el Evangelio de hoy nos enseñan que la vida es un camino que nos tiene que llevar al cielo. Pero, para poder ser merecedores de él, tenemos que ser probados por las tentaciones. «Jesús fue llevado por el Espíritu al desierto para ser tentado por el diablo» (Mt 4,1). Jesús quiso enseñarnos, al permitir ser tentado, cómo hemos de luchar y vencer en nuestras tentaciones: con la confianza en Dios y la oración, con la gracia divina y con la fortaleza. Las tentaciones se pueden describir como los “enemigos del alma”. En concreto, se resumen y concretan en tres aspectos. En primer lugar, “el mundo”: «Di que estas piedras se conviertan en panes» (Mt 4,3). Supone vivir sólo para tener cosas. En segundo lugar, “el demonio”: «Si postrándote me adoras (…)» (Mt 4,9). Se manifiesta en la ambición de poder. Y, finalmente, “la carne”: «Tírate abajo» (Mt 4,6), lo cual significa poner la confianza en el cuerpo. Todo ello lo expresa mejor santo Tomas de Aquino diciendo que «la causa de las tentaciones son las causas de las concupiscencias: el deleite de la carne, el afán de gloria y la ambición de poder».

Si estas observando la cuaresma este año, te sugiero que consideres una de estas ideas. *¿No puedes vivir sin el café? Deja de tomarlo por estos 40 días. *Dejar la soda, *Dejar el chocolate y los dulces *Dejar el alcohol *Limita el tiempo que vez televisión *Si eres fanático/a con las redes sociales, elimínalas durante la cuaresma *Dejar de jugar juegos de Internet *Dejar de ver novelas *Lee la Biblia todos los días *Orar todos los días *Forma un grupo de oración con tu familia y amigos *No compres nada que no sea necesario para sobrevivir.

Padre, todos los elementos de la naturaleza obedecen tu mandato. Te alabamos y te damos gracias por tu protección durante la temporada de huracanes. Nuevamente te pedimos que nos guíes a través de un nuevo año libre de terremotos, inundaciones y otros desastres naturales. Bendice nuestras familias y trae la paz a todas las naciones. ANUNCIOS DE LA PARROQUIA LA SEGUNDA COLECTA de hoy es para la electricidad y el mantenimiento de la Iglesia. Gracias. ROSARIO. La Vírgen se llevará mañana lunes 10 de marzo a las 7:00 p.m. a la casa de Gladys Charies en Sion Farm, donde se rezará el rosario y permanecerá allí por todo el mes. Para los que no saben donde viven, nos reuniremos en la parada del autobús de Sion Farm a las 6:30 p.m. para salir a las 6:45 p.m. ADORACION. La adoración del Santísimo en la capilla de San Miguel continúa el próximo martes 11 de marzo de 7:00 a.m. a 6:00 p.m. REGLAS DE CUARESMA. El Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo, son días de ayuno y abstinencia. Todos los viernes de Cuaresma, son días de abstinencia de carne. Abstinencia de carne es para todos los que han cumplido 14 años, la ancianidad, por sí sola, no exime de esta ley de abstinencia. Ayuno consiste en una comida completa al día para todos los que han cumplido 18 años, hasta el comienzo de los sesenta. El Vía Crucis se reza todos los viernes comenzado a las 6:00 p.m. con el rosario por la vida, seguido del vía crucis a las 6:30 p.m. alrededor de la escuela. Después del via crucis tendremos la adoración y bendición del Santísmo en la iglesia. Ven y acompañanos a caminar con el Señor en su calvario. CAMBIO EN EL HORARIO DE MISAS. Mediante esta campaña anual, tu donativo ayudará a sostener a Caridades Católicas de las Islas Vírgenes, proveer asistencia de emergencia de comida, ropa, albergue y medicinas a aquellos que están más necesitados. También asiste con la matrícula a nuestra escuelas católicas y con fondos para recursos para los estudiantes. La súplica ayuda a traer la fe al mundo mediante el Catholic Islander y otras difusoras, el Ministerio de Jóvenes Diocesado y la formación de Seminaristas.
