second half, it was too much of a mountain to climb to get back into it. Injuries and suspensions are now going to make it trickier to climb the table but we all still have belief that our aims can be achieved and that rise up the rankings hopefully starts today. Deal Town are no easy prospect though as they share our ambitions of getting out of this Division. They currently sit in second place and have their sights firmly set on the leaders Erith & Belvedere. Today will be a big challenge. Following this game we return here on Wednesday night for the visit of a young Charlton Athletic side in the London Cup and are hoping for a decent attendance and performance to match. Enjoy today's game and Come On You Phoenix! Good afternoon and welcome to The Mayplace Ground for our SCEFL league fixture against Deal Town We hope our visitors and their connections have had a safe, albeit long journey and enjoy the facilities on offer. We come into this match off the back of a poor result in midweek here against Tunbridge Wells. We started well but couldn't take advantage and when our visitors got their goals early in the FROM THE BOARDROOM ANDREW MORTLOCK Morty

FROM THE DUGOUT STEVE O'BOYLE and unfortunately, we didn’t perform, so for me, there were no excuses. It was a poor result, and the performance was mediocre, and I expect a lot more from our players. We have a very tough game today, against one of the favourites to get promoted. I’m hoping we get a reaction from our players. At this moment in time, we’re not consistent enough. Today the players need to stand up and be counted and play to the very best of their ability if we are going to get a positive result. I’m expecting a hard-fought contest and we need to show more than we did on Wednesday night against Tunbridge Wells. I hope everyone enjoys the game. Boyley Good afternoon and welcome to Phoenix Sports for today's SCEFL League home game versus Deal Town. Wednesday night’s performance against Tunbridge Wells was extremely disappointing. We can make all the excuses we like that we had so many players not available for selection, but the team I put out on the night, I thought were still really strong,

Two goals in a seven minute spell early in the second half earned Tunbridge Wells victory at Phoenix Sports. They started the brighter and had their first chance from an early corner when Dan Tear’s header was tipped over the bar by Steve Phillips. Tear was also on the end of the follow up delivery, but he was again thwarted, this time by a good block. At the other end, Francis Babalola’s cross was deflected over the Wells goalkeeper, but it landed on the bar and went over. Phillips again had to be at his best when making a brilliant save from Trevor McCreadie’s first time volley before Conner Ping was set up nicely only to see his shot deflected over. Tear then headed over after he lost his marker at the near post. Luke Leppard had a half chance with a shot that Jason Tibble saved easily then another when his effort was blocked into the path of Lee Bird, however Tibble was equal to it. Phillips saved from McCreadie before Phoenix came close when Alfie Evans squared to Andy Pugh whose shot was saved brilliantly by Tibble. The resulting corner also fell to Pugh, but his effort was cleared off the line. That turned out to be his last part of the action as he had to be withdrawn and replaced by Lewis Clark. Although Phoenix finished the first half strongly, it counted for nothing when the visitors went ahead two minutes after the break through an excellent strike by James Nurden. Seven minutes later, Phillips made an excellent save from Jacob Feasey only for it to fall into the path of McCreadie, and he finished coolly. Less than two minutes later, Phoenix pulled themselves back into the game. Evans took a free kick from the right and Leppard got up well to head home. Tom O’Connor came close to levelling shortly afterwards, but Tibble tipped his deflected shot over. McCreadie had another opportunity but shot over before the Evans and Leppard combination again caused problems when the latter’s first time effort whistled just over. After that, chances dried up at both ends and the visitors were able to kill the clock and ease their way to victory. In the final minute of stoppage time, Henry Douglas was taken out by rash challenge, reacted badly, and was shown a red card. WE MAKE BUILDINGS WORK

AS FA CUP draws go, there really is nothing like the fourth qualifying round. Yes, the first round ‘proper’ (a word banned in NLP Towers), and third round draws will grab all the publicity but, for me, there isn’t anything quite like the euphoria of the final qualifier before the ‘big boys’ come in. Give the change of the Non-League landscape these last few years, I would argue that the Holy Grail for all FA Cup dreamers starts here – and this week’s draw sure didn’t disappoint. Take Anstey Nomads for example. The lowest ranked club left in the competition as I write this, the Step 5 Nomads have progressed through five rounds to get to this stage for the first time in their history, culminating in a 5-0 victory over fellow minnows Shefford Town & Campton last weekend. Their reward, a home tie with Chesterfield, second in the National League with average attendances of over 6,000 and FA Cup semi-finalists in 1996-97. Who says the magic of the FA Cup only starts at round one? And Nomads weren’t the only ones to pick a dream tie in the live talkSPORT draw this week. Beckenham Town, riding high in Isthmian League South East having won promotion from Combined Counties South last week, were rewarded for their 5-3 success over Binfield with a visit of Dagenham & Redbridge to their modest Eden Park Avenue ground. What a scalp that could be? Elsewhere, Coalville Town were handed a dream trip to Notts County’s famous Meadow Lane stadium, steeped in FA Cup history, Sevenoaks Town were given a short trip to National League South leaders and Kent rivals Ebbsfleet United and St Ives Town were pulled out a home tie against top-flight strugglers FC Halifax Town, no doubt dreaming of adding their names to the cup archives. Underdogs Hanley Town, Stocksbridge Park Steels or Ashington and Clitheroe or Bury AFC - in their first FA Cup foray as a phoenix club - were also looking to continue the journey as this column went to press with Tuesday night replays – arguably the biggest games in their club’s history. One tie which will stand out to the FA Cup purist, however, is Blyth Spartans’ visit of National League Wrexham. You have to go back to 1977-78 to stumble across the history between these two sides and a fifth-round replay played at Newcastle United. After a 1-1 draw in the initial tie at Wrexham, the replay was switched to a snowbound St James’s Park and was watched by an official attendance of 42,187 – easily the biggest crowd of the season there and one which wouldn’t be bettered for 22 years! Wrexham won the replay 2-1 and went on to lose 3-2 to Arsenal in the quarter-finals that season. These days, of course, the Dragons are owned by A-lister Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney and have dreams of replicating such glory. But in order for the Hollywood storyline to roll into action, they’re going to have to rewrite history and get past old foes Blyth first. Lights, camera, action!

When the SCEFL Premier Division kicked off at the end of July there was a lot of excitement and anticipation for the season that we had ahead of us. Gone were the two outstanding teams from last year and the league was looking wide open, with all 20 sides taking part this time setting their sights on one of the two promotion places on offer. Now, two months in, we have had a good taster of what this season has in store. There is a lot to look forward to and a lot we are excited about seeing how it plays out. The future looks good but before we get there, lets look back. Lets return to day one and follow it through the opening couple of months of the campaign. Lets remind ourselves about what has happened so far in the SCEFL season 2022/23. All teams took part on the opening weekend, which began on a Friday night in Erith. A record crowd saw the hosts put on an impressive display but Phoenix Sports took the points and we were off and running, Stansfeld and Sutton Athletic took no time into settling in to their new life at Step 5. Stansfeld edged out Bearsted on day one while Arlie Desanges netted a hat-trick in a 4-1 win for Sutton against Canterbury City. 4-1 was a popular scoreline that July afternoon, as Punjab United and Rusthall each won that way and the early top of the table was a 3-way tie. Following a break for the FA Cup (August would be dominated by Cup fixtures), league games resumed on the 13th of the month and a few sides doubled up their opening day point tally. Rusthall showed that it was no fluke against Welling Town by impressively beating Erith Town and Deal, Erith & Belvedere and Whitstable quickly joined the 'Rustics' on 6 points with wins of their own. The surprise side at this stage may well have been Stansfeld though, who followed up their win against Bearsted with another one against Kennington. Stansfeld would slip up in the following midweek though, when Welling Town left Foxbury victorious, leaving Deal Town to be the first to move on to 9 points, when they won at home to Canterbury. The middle of this month also saw K Sports get on the board with a win at Lordswood and Holmesdale edge past a slow starting Tunbridge Wells. However people were starting to pay attention to Rusthall now, a team that many would have suggested would have a season of struggle, but instead were now 3 wins from 3, after Punjab United become their latest victims, and 5-2 victims at that. Rusthall were also on a roll in the FA Cup too. Ramsgate were the latest team to fall short against Jimmy Anderson's men and they would join Erith Town, Fisher and Phoenix Sports in the third phase of this prestigious competition. August closed out with a bonanza of Bank Holiday SCEFL action. K Sports looked good against Tunbridge Wells, but slipped up 2 days later at Bearsted. Tunbridge Wells then rebounded from the defeat at Cobdown to be the first team to beat Rusthall this season. 842 would watch that one at the Culverden Stadium. Wins also came for Lordswood, Punjab United and Kennington but the most eye-catching result of the long weekend came at Foxbury where the tenants beat the landlords 3-1, moving Stansfeld on to 10 points for the opening month and a share of top spot with Deal. The two leaders would start September the way they left August - with another win, another good performance, and another 3 points. Stansfeld beat Canterbury while Deal were comfortable winners at home to Lordswood. Creeping up the table were Erith & Belvedere though, with only a lack of games played denying them their own place at the top so far, but that would quickly change. Two games in a few days for the 'Deres' both went their way and now on 5 wins out of 5, we had a new leader, and a new favourite for the title. Hollands & Blair were quietly going about their business too. With Star Meadow the latest ground to receive the 3G treatment - and not yet ready, Lordswood's Martyn Grove was playing home to Scott Porters men and doing so very nicely. On 6th September, K Sports visited Blair's temporary home but were heavily beaten with Bewick and Brown among the scorers as the hosts hit 7, to become the widest margin winners of the league season so far. There was a summer of change at Whitstable Town, both on and off the pitch. Richard Styles made the dugout switch from the Culverden to a Belmont Stadium now belatedly ready to host it's first match. SCEFL REVIEW SEASON SO FAR

Welling Town were the visitors and party poopers as despite grabbing an early Gething goal, Whitstable were not fantastic on their plastic and 488 saw them lose their big homecoming. The middle of the month soon approached and it provided yet another win for leaders Erith & Belvedere. They hit Punjab United for 6 at Park View Road, to go 6 and 6. A devilish sign that a wicked season was in store for the 'Deres.' Others battled to keep up with Tony Beckingham's pacesetters. Stansfeld kept on their tails with a win against Rusthall and Erith Town remained in touch thanks to success against Glebe. Deal Town lost ground though after suffering a surprising loss to the most consistent of inconsistent sides, K Sports. Holmesdale earned 3 points at home to Welling, Bearsted and Lordswood both won and Tunbridge Wells motored up the table with a win against Sutton Athletic. This midweek also saw a match-up between the only 2 remaining 'FA Cup sides'. A feisty encounter saw Phoenix pip Fisher, with the Sports now catching-up in the table while trying to catch-up in league games played too. Saturday 17th September gave us 5 league games and a 5-star display from Deal Town. The 'Hoops' put in a dominant second half performance against Holmesdale at the Charles Ground, where 5 different players scored the 5 second half goals that helped Deal move back up to second place in the table. Whitstable Town edged out Rusthall in a 5-goal classic of their own and Glebe finally gave their home fans something to cheer about with a victory over K Sports. Glebe would follow that up with an end-of-August win against Wells, proving the rumours of discontent at Foxbury to be a little premature. Sutton Athletic closed out their opening 2 months at Step 5 with a win at home to Welling while Erith & Belvedere were in seventh heaven, when Fisher were the latest side unable to end their perfect winning record. So, now two months in to the 2022/23 SCEFL season the stalls have been firmly set out by many of the fancied promotion contenders. Erith & Belvedere are the team to stop - although nobody can seem to do that. Deal Town are their closest challengers, and are ready to pounce as soon as a slip is made. Stansfeld are the surprise act so far, with their looking like no chance of them returning to Step 6 anytime soon - they may even go the other way. The likes of Erith Town and Glebe and creeping closer while Tunbridge Wells and Whitstable Town are getting into their stride. But it's still early days. We are only 75 games into a 380 match campaign and plenty will change as the season ebbs and flows. Winter is upon us and the carnage of Christmas is still to come. These opening two months are just the appetiser to what is ahead. Our inaugural SCEFL Groundhop will bring a lot of eyes attention to the league this weekend and we are excited to see how it plays out. The SCEFL have hand-picked the perfect places to visit for this first attempt and new faces to football in this area are sure to enjoy the offering. Beyond that, we just want more of the same. The same excitement that these opening months have brought, the same record breaking attendances for many of our teams. The same high-scoring games and stunning goals scored. The same coverage from local press and social sharing from the non-league family. What we have had so far has been great and there is still so much more to come. Two months in, seven to go, a feast of football ahead. Enjoy the SCEFL everyone. SCEFL REVIEW SEASON SO FAR Dean

The lack of non-white representation at the managerial level has been a noteworthy issue in English football in recent years. There have been just 28 black managers in the history of the English professional game, and progress in this area has been glacial, even if it is slowly changing. Patrick Vieira now sits among the managerial elite, where a small handful of black men have been, but the pioneer that broke that ground came long before. Not, as has often been suggested, the 1993 appointment of Keith Alexander at Lincoln City, but three decades before even that. In 1960, with their manager poached by nearby Blackburn Rovers, Rochdale turned to an experienced member of their playing squad. In doing so, they made Tony Collins the first black manager in English football. Born in 1926, around the same time that Jack Leslie became the first black player to be called up to an England squad, Collins was a promising schoolboy footballer who was on track to making his career at Brentford, before as with many players of his generation and before, the Second World War intervened. Conscripted into the army at the age of eighteen, toward the end of the conflict, he nevertheless found himself into the army football teams, where his talent was obvious. Two army teammates took his name to Sheffield Wednesday manager Eric Taylor, who invited him for a trial and then signed him. The move to Yorkshire proved fruitful, and he was well regarded by fans and staff at all of the clubs he played for; a career that took in York City, Watford, Norwich and Crystal Palace, although notably not England. In 1959 he made the final move of his playing career, to fourth division Rochdale. It was this move that would secure his name in footballing history. Collins was appointed player-manager in 1960, making enough of an impact to be given the job full- time when he hung up his boots a year later. This allowed his to focus on the managerial aspects of his job, and this focus would be vital. In his second year as manager, his first as a full-time member of staff, he led the fourth division side through the League Cup, beating Second Division Southampton and Charlton before a semi-final draw against First Division Blackburn Rovers, and his former manager Jack Marshall. A shock 3-1 win at Spotland set the tone for a nervy second leg, where Blackburn were on the verge of a 2-0, away goals victory before a late goal took Rochdale to the only major final. It took fifty years for another fourth division side to go that far in the competition, and should be a testament to Collins’ ability. Rochdale were soundly beaten by Norwich in the final, but the achievement was clear, and in the following months Collins applied for thirteen jobs higher up the pyramid, not receiving a reply from any of the clubs that he had contacted. He made his home in Rochdale, managing the side for a further five years, before resigning to focus on his family. He wouldn’t spend long outside of football however, and after a brief spell at Bristol City went on to join Don Revie’s Leeds as chief scout. Revie was sufficiently impressed that he took Collins with him into the national team setup, where the scout earned the nickname “Super Spy”, following a detailed, accurate and ultimately successful strategy that he outlined after watching Scotland. It was scouting where he would see out the rest of his career, making quite a name for himself in picking out young talents for big clubs. Being sent to scout a Dutch full-back who didn’t impress, Collins instead recommended to Manchester United manager a young Ruud Gullit. The Dutchman wasn’t for sale, but after watching St. Patrick’s Athletic, Paul McGrath was. He worked with Jock Stein, and later with Sir Alex Ferguson, to whom he unsuccessfully recommended a very young Alan Shearer, and more successfully proposed Lee Sharpe to Fergie’s project. But despite his obvious abilities as a scout, it is for his seven year spell in charge of Rochdale that Collins will be remembered. As representation improves and diversity increases throughout football management, it is to him that we must look as the pioneer. Enjoy the game. THE UNTOLD GAME THE MANAGERIAL PIONEER

PHOENIX SPORTS CLUB Formed in 1935, Phoenix Sports Club originally started out as St. Johns Welling, later changing its name to Lakeside, before renaming to Phoenix following the Second World War as it was seen to rise from the ashes of the previous two clubs amidst the destruction caused by the blitz. Over the years the club has played at various locations in the local area, including Danson Park until 1950 when the local council offered them a piece of waste land in Mayplace Road East, Bexleyheath. Over time it evolved into the ground that we all know now as The Club. Both football and cricket have been played at Mayplace Road East, with many members, both past and present, representing the club in both sports. However, with the growth of junior football, cricket has now moved away from the club. After entering various leagues, including the Sidcup League, Kent Amateur League and the Dartford League, the club settled in the Kent County League Division One West. In the 1986/7 season, the club entered the Spartan League and competed there for six seasons. They then returned to the Kent County League - Division One - West, winning the Challenge Cup in 1993-94. In 1999/2000 we won the league, gaining promotion to the Premier Division, however after two relegations ended up in Division Two West, finally returning to the first division in 2004/05, and then back to the Premier Division in 2007/08. After three seasons in the Premier Division, the first team became founder members of the Kent Invicta League at step 6 of the National League System (Step 10 of the English Football League System) – the highest level of football the club has ever played at. We went on to finish runners up, missing out by only two points to eventual champions Bly Spartans as well as reaching the League Cup Final, again losing out to Bly Spartans. Unfortunately, the First team and Reserve Team Management both resigned for personal reasons at the end of season 2011-2012. After an exhaustive process we appointed Steve O’Boyle and Tony Beckingham as Joint First Team Managers and John Hope as Manager for the Reserves assisted by Brian Magenis and John Barry. Off the pitch we installed floodlights and a 108 seat stand and with further improvements around the ground we soon received an F Grade. After a successful first campaign under the new management structure, and after losing only two league games all season, Phoenix won the Kent Invicta League and gained promotion to the Kent League (now renamed the Southern Counties East Football League) to play at step 5 of the National League System. We finished in sixth place in our inaugural season but had aims to do even better the next year. We had a very good start to the campaign but unfortunately lost in our first ever appearance in the FA Cup - losing on penalties after a replay. We then began an unbelievable run in both the League and FA Vase. The Vase journey was fantastic culminating in us reaching the 4th Round Proper, where we lost to the eventual winners North Shields. In the League we managed to lose only 1 game all season and accumulated 30 clean sheets. Due to these great performances we managed to win the League quite comfortably in the end, although there were a few sticky moments along the way. We then needed to work miracles off the pitch, but we eventually managed to get all of the necessary works done in time to gain a D Grade and promotion to Isthmian League North Division. Our first season at this level saw us finish in 14th place, which was improved upon the next year when we came 8th. We were then the subject of a lateral movement and competed in the newly sponsored Bostik League South, for the 2017-18 season. After a decent start and sitting in the play-off spots for a while, we were rocked by the departure of First Team Manager Steve O’Boyle. Paul Bryon came in and steadied the ship and we finished in a creditable 11th place. The following year we improved to a pleasing 9th position. The early ends to the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons, due to the Coronavirus Pandemic, prevented us from again gaining top half finishes before a disappointing 2021/22 campaign saw us finish second bottom and get relegated down to SCEFL league. We go into the 2022/23 season with Steve O'Boyle back in the dugout now, leading a side hungry for a quick return to Step 4. Phoenix Sports are a FA charter Standard Community Club - the highest level of youth recognition from the Football Association. Mini-soccer is played at the Mayplace Ground and Sundays are always busy with parents cheering on the young players wearing our green shirt. ourhistory

Originally known as Deal Cinque Ports FC the club was formed in the early 1900s, changing its’ name in 1920 to Deal Town FC. Deals’ first matches were played in the Thanet League and the East Kent League. In 1909 they joined the Eastern section of the Kent League. Following the disbanding of the Kent League in 1959, Deal became founder members of the Aetolian League. 1963 saw Deal elected into the Southern League, but after a torrid three seasons they moved onto the Greater London League. The 1971/72 season saw the club return to the Kent League. Deals’ first, Kent League Championship came in 1953/54, then after a long wait, the second was achieved in 1999/2000. They have been Runners-up on two occasions, 1988/89 and 1998/99. The club has reached the Kent League Cup Final on five occasions. Their first Final appearance came in 1957/58 when they overcame Margate. Deal won their second League Cup in 1981/82, this time defeating Erith & Belvedere. Their third appearance in the Final was 1993/94, when they lost to Ramsgate. The Club lifted the cup for the 3rd time in 1998/99, defeating VCD Athletic. In 1999/2000, they reached the final, but did not contend it. The club has made four appearances in the Kent Senior Trophy Final. Deal were beaten finalists in 1982/83 going down to Southern League Fisher Athletic. There was further heartbreak in the 1990/91 Final this time having to settle for second best against Hythe Town. However, it was a case of third time lucky in 1994/95 as Deal finally captured the Trophy defeating Folkestone Invicta in a penalty shoot-out following a 2-2 draw. 1999/2000 saw Deal lift the trophy for the second time when they beat Chatham 5-1. Another trophy to come the way of the club was the Greater London League Cup which they won in 1967/68, meanwhile in 1959/60 Deal finished as Aetolian League Runners-up. 1997 saw the appointment of a new Chairman in Roy Smith whose ambitions both on and off the field lifted the Club, and his decision to appoint a full time manager in Tommy Sampson for the beginning of the 1998 season soon bore fruit. 1998/99 saw the Club achieve their best season. Apart from the successes of the 1st team, the Reserves won the League championship for the first time, and were beaten finalists in both the League Cup and the Intermediate Cup. This was however surpassed the following season. As well as their domestic achievements, Deal Town become the 1st team from Kent to lift the FA Vase with their 1-0 victory at Wembley Stadium against Chippenham Town in front of a crowd of 20,083, the second biggest in the history of the competition. Before the start of the 2000/01 season Tommy and the Vase winning players left the Club, so it was a case of rebuilding a side and consolidating the Club under manager Dave Dadd. Dave stepped down to become assistant manager after one year to be replaced by Simon Bryant who led the team to creditable 3rd & 4th place finishes in his 2 seasons in charge before moving to Herne Bay. With the majority of players leaving the Club, it was again a case of rebuilding and consolidating. This time it fell to Derek Hares who was promoted to 1st team manager at the start of the 2003/04 campaign and remained until he resigned in October 2013. Albie Barker took over the reins until he resigned in January 2014 to be replaced by Paul Murray. Paul stood down to be replaced by Darren Anslow for the start of the 2014/15 campaign, only for him to resign in early September and be replaced by Dave Johncock. Dave was replaced in January 2015 by Derek Hares with Paul Murray as his assistant and Steve King as coach. Paul resigned for the start of the 2016/17 season. Season 2015/16 saw us finish in 9th position in the table, a top half finish, an improvement on previous seasons where we have struggled as a bottom half team for over ten years. We had a very good run in the FA Cup, finally losing out to St Albans in the 2nd Qualifying round 1-2 away, having beaten Horsham and Whitstable on the way. We also had a good run in the FA Vase before losing to a strong Kidlington side in Oxfordshire. All in all, a good season both on and off the pitch with our new Clubhouse up and running. Last season was slightly disappointing in that we finished in 13th place in the table, four places lower than the previous season, although it looked as though it was going to be significantly worse at one point. The 4-2 home defeat to Erith Town at the end of January left the Hoops in 18th position in the table and facing a relegation battle, but the players responded superbly by losing only two of their remaining 15 league games to ensure another mid-table finish 2017-18 saw improvement and a 7th placed finish before finishing 11th in 2018/19. The following season ended early due to Coronovirus but not before The Hoops were able to embark on an impressive FA Vase run that only ended at the Fifth Round stage. For those that were there to see the penalty shoot-out win at Binfield, the memories will long live on. The 2020/21 campaign also ended before it really got started before The Hoops finished in 4th place in 2021/22. With Derek Hares now stepping aside Steve King is the man tasked with leading the Club to glory in the 2022/23 season. Our Opponents History DEAL TOWN
