Pierson Patriot News DECEMBER 2013 Dear Pierson Families and Friends, We hope everyone had a wonderful, restful Thanksgiving break. As November passes into yesterday; we are all eagerly looking toward the December holiday season. December typically is a very busy month at Pierson Elementary. Many classes have events planned, as well as school-wide events. Of special note: Pierson Choir Holiday Concert- Wednesday, 12/18 @ 6:30 PM, Taylor Auditorium PTA Holiday Shoppe- Monday, 12/16 – Thursday, 12/19, Media Center. Volunteers are needed!! Please see Mrs. Hogan to volunteer!!! Winter Break begins the end of the day, Thursday, November 19th. Classes resume Tuesday, January 7th. The second grading period for students ends on Thursday, November 19th. Please take this time to schedule conferences with teachers to discuss student progress and how you may help your child be successful in school. Reading is the Number 1 way to encourage student success in school. Please read to or have your child read a minimum of 15 – 30 minutes each day over the holiday break. Talk to your children about school… ask them what their “learning targets” were for that day, and set goals for improvement as needed. Children enjoy sharing their successes with loved ones. We would like to wish everyone the best for a safe, joyous winter break. Our hope is that families will share some meaningful time with family and friends. Así como Noviembre ya se nos pasa; todos estamos mirando con impaciencia hacia la temporada de vacaciones de diciembre. Diciembre normalmente es un mes muy ocupado en la escuela primaria de Pierson. Muchas clases tienen eventos planeados, así como eventos a nivel de toda la escuela. Nota especial:Concierto de Festividades del Coro de Pierson- Miércoles, 12/18 @ 6:30 PM, en el Auditorio de Taylor PTA- Tienda navideña- Lunes, 12/19, en la biblioteca. Se necesitan voluntarios!! Por favor ver a la Sra. Hogan para ser voluntarios!!!Las vacaciones de invierno comienza el final del día, el Jueves19 de Noviembre. Reinicio de clases Martes, 7 de Enero. El segundo período de calificaciones para los estudiantes termina el jueves 19 de noviembre. Por favor, tome este tiempo para programar conferencias con los maestros para discutir el progreso del estudiante y cómo usted puede ayudar a su hijo a tener éxito en la escuela. KINDERGARTEN

Thank you to our entire parent chaperones who helped make our trip to the Volusia County Fair a success. If you are interested in chaperoning future field trips, please make sure you have completed a Volusia County Schools Volunteer application and turn it in to Ms. Hogan in the office as soon as possible so you will be ready when our next trip comes around. The children also enjoyed performing for everyone who was able to attend our Thanksgiving Feast . The children are learning many new things in all subject areas. Please talk to your child every night and ask them to share with you something they have learned during their day. Learning to answer questions in complete sentences is an important part of kindergarten. Children should be reviewing their sight words and reading their sight word stories nightly. Also, make sure you are signing your child’s folder calendar every day. Our folder calendars have information about daily behavior and important events like INTERNATIONAL FOOD DAY on Thursday Dec. 19th. Together we can help make your child’s kindergarten year a successful one.

FIRST GRADE In the middle of October we began using SIPPS, a leveled reading program that focuses on phonological awareness, phonics and sight words. Ask your child who their SIPPS or Walk to Intervention teacher is! Your child should be bringing home a story each night that goes with the program and it will also be reflected in their homework. Please study the list of words with your child and read and reread the stories for fluency. If you have questions about this program you should ask your child’s teacher. We have our third “big” district math test coming up before the winter holiday. These assessments are challenging and full of word problems, and it would help the teachers if you could help your child with their math homework each night. In the afternoons we have been writing personal narratives about how we get ready in the morning, go swimming and special days with family members. Your child should be writing a story with a simple beginning, middle and end and should be writing a minimum of 5-7 sentences with each story. Please reinforce this in their homework. In science, we are learning about objects in the day and night sky, and why the sun is both harmful and helpful. For social studies we studied what Thanksgiving and about past, present and future. Ask your child what interesting fact they have learned lately, they may amaze you as much as they amaze us each day.

KINDER

Gracias a todos nuestros padres quienes nos ayudaron con nuestro paseo a la Feria del Condado de Volusia el cual fue todo un éxito. Si usted está interesado en ser acompañantes en nuestros futuros paseos por favor de llenar una aplicación del Condado de las Escuelas de Volusia y entregarla a la Sra. Hogan en la oficina principal lo más pronto posible para que esté listo para nuestro próximo paseo que ya se nos acerca. Los niños gozaron mucho la presentación que hicieron para quienes vinieron al Banquete de Día de Gracias. Los niños están aprendiendo muchas cosas nuevas en todas las aéreas. Por favor de hablar con su niño todas las noches y hágale preguntas que comparta con usted algo que aprendió durante el día. El aprender el contestar con oraciones completas es una parte muy importante en el Kinder. Los niños deben de estar estudiando sus palabras de alta frecuencia y leyendo sus historias con las palabras de alta frecuencia todas las noches. También, asegúrese de firmar el calendario en el folder todos los días. Nuestro calendario en el folder tiene mucha información acerca del comportamiento diario y eventos importantes como DIA INTERNACIONAL DE COMIDA el jueves, 19 de Diciembre. Juntos podemos hacer que el año de Kínder de su niño sea todo un éxito.

PRIMER GRADO A mediados de Octubre dimos comienzo a SIPPS, un programa de lectura que se enfoca en conocimiento fonológico, fonética y palabras de alta frecuencia. Pregúntele a su niño de su SIPPS o vaya donde la maestra de intervención. Su niño debería de estar llevando a casa una historia todas las noches que va con el programa y también reflectara en su tarea. Por favor estudie las preguntas con su niño(a) y lea y vuelva a leer las historias con fluidez. Si usted tiene preguntas acerca de este programa usted debe hacerle preguntas a la maestra de su estudiante. Tenemos nuestro tercer “gran” examen de matemáticas del distrito que ya se nos acerca antes de las vacaciones de invierno. Estos exámenes son desafiados y llenos de problemas con palabras y le ayudaría al maestro de su niño(a) con la tarea de matemáticas todas las noches. En las tardes hemos estado haciendo escritura narrativa personal acerca de lo que leemos por la mañana, yendo a nadar y días especiales con miembros de la familia. Su niño debería de estar escribiendo una historia con simple principio, en medio y al final y debería de escribir por lo menos un mínimo de 5-7 oraciones con cada historia. Por favor asegúrese que practiquen esto en sus tareas. En Ciencia estamos aprendiendo acerca de objetos en el cielo de día y de noche y el porqué el sol es ambos dañino y bueno. En Estudios Sociales estamos estudiando lo que significa el Día de Gracias, el pasado, presente y futuro. Pregúntele a su niño que factores interesantes han aprendido últimamente, lo van a sorprender tanto como nos sorprenden a nosotros todos los días.

SECOND GRADE

It is amazing how quickly this year seems to be going! We are now very close to our Winter Break and have hit the half -way mark. As we continue learning, in Reading we are focusing on text-based questions and taking a deeper look at what we read. As you will hear us say all the time, please make sure that your student is reading every night. As the year goes on, reading will remain extremely important. The saying goes, in second grade our students are still learning to read, but in third grade they are reading to learn. So being proficient at this skill is a must! In Math, we just took our district assessment on algebra and are moving into addition and subtraction strategies. In Science, we have just finished our unit on weather. Ask your child the steps to staying safe if severe weather is headed your way! We continue to focus on integrating both Science and Social Studies in your students’ daily Reading instruction. We ask for your continued support in making sure that your student is here by 8:00 a.m. every morning. We start Walk to Intervention promptly at 8:10 and the phonics program we begin at that time needs all students attendance for the full time. Special Area schedule will change once we return from Winter Break, so please be sure to ask your child’s teacher what their new schedule is. It is very important that your student is either wearing or bringing shoes that can be worn during P.E. Another way to help your child succeed is to make sure they are completing their homework every night. This practice helps to reinforce the skills that we have taught during the day.

THIRD GRADE Hello friends and families! We are excited to enter December and the Holiday Season. The students are working so hard and we are proud of their efforts! Third graders have been working on becoming better readers by focusing on finding the main idea and central message, building vocabulary, and sequencing in text. In Math, we learned how to multiply and divide and have moved into data and graphing. Our next unit will be on Geometry! Our students have learned about matter in Science and are now moving on to the different forms of energy, and how energy makes things move and change. In Social Studies, we are working on using text features to help us understand the text we are reading, and learning about the geographic features of the United States. We want our third graders to continue being successful! Please remember to read with your child every night at home and ask them questions about what they are reading. Have your student practice their multiplication tables regularly and quiz them on their facts. The better we know our tables fluently, the easier math will be! SEGUNDO GRADO ¡Es increíble lo rápido que este año se nos está yendo! Ahora estamos muy cerca de las vacaciones de invierno y llegar

a la mitad de la marca. A medida que seguimos aprendiendo, en la Lectura nos estamos centrando en las preguntas basadas en texto y tomamos una mirada más profunda a lo que leemos. Como podrán oírnos decir todo el tiempo, por favor, asegúrese de que su hijo este leyendo todas las noches. A medida que el año avanza, la lectura seguirá siendo muy importante. Como dice el refrán, en segundo grado los estudiantes todavía están aprendiendo a leer, pero en el tercero grado están leyendo para aprender. Así que ser competente en esta habilidad es un deber! En Matemáticas ya tomamos nuestra evaluación del distrito en el álgebra y nos estamos moviendo en las estrategias de suma y resta. En Ciencia acabamos de terminar nuestra unidad en el tiempo. Pregúntele a su hijo sobre las medidas que tienen que tomar para mantenerse seguro en caso que tengamos un tiempo severo! Seguimos centrándonos en la integración de ambas Ciencias y Estudios Sociales en la enseñanza de la lectura diaria de sus estudiantes. Le pedimos su apoyo continuo para asegurar que el estudiante este aquí a las 8:00 a.m. cada mañana. Empezamos a caminar a la intervención puntualmente a las 8:10 y el programa de fonética empieza a esa hora y necesitamos tomar la asistencia por el tiempo completo. El horario de Área Especial va a cambiar una vez que regresemos de las vacaciones de invierno, así que por favor asegúrese de preguntarle al profesor de su hijo cual es su nuevo horario. Es muy importante que su hijo use o traiga los zapatos apropiados para que pueda usarlos durante Educación Física. Otra manera de ayudar a su hijo a tener éxito es asegurarse de que estén terminando su tarea cada noche. Esta práctica ayuda a reforzar las habilidades que hemos enseñado durante el día.

¡Hola amigos y familias! Estamos muy emocionados en recibir Diciembre y la Temporada de Festividades. Los estudiantes están trabajando bien duro y estamos muy orgullosos de ellos por todo su esfuerzo! ¡El tercer grado ha estado trabajando en ser mejores lectores enfocándose en encontrar la idea principal y el mensaje central, creando vocabulario, y sucesión en el texto. En Matemáticas hemos aprendido como multiplicar y dividir y nos hemos movido en datos y gráficos. Nuestra próxima unidad será en Geometría! Nuestros estudiantes han aprendido acerca de la materia en Ciencia y ahora estamos pasando a las diferentes formas de energía y como la energía hace que las cosas se muevan y cambien. En Estudios Sociales estamos trabajando en cómo usar los utensilios de texto para ayudarnos a entender lo que estamos leyendo y aprendiendo acerca de geografía de los Estados Unidos. ¡Queremos que nuestros estudiantes del tercer grado continúen con éxito! Por favor recuerde el leer con su niño todas las noches en casa y hágale preguntas de lo que están leyendo. Pídales que practiquen sus tablas de multiplicación regularmente y hágales un examen en sus factores. Entre más se sepan sus tablas de multiplicación de memoria, se les hará mucho más fácil! FOURTH GRADE It has been a busy November for fourth grade! We have been focused on multi-digit multiplication and our students are working hard to learn different methods in solving these types of problems. Many of our students can now understand why it is so important to know their multiplication facts fluently; it makes solving these problems a lot easier! You are a big help. We (teachers and your child) need you to continue the learning process at home. Please make sure to ask your child to solve real problems you may encounter. Give them time to think and explain how they arrived to their answers. To help your child succeed in math: set a weekly multiplication goal for them using multiplication flash cards (begin with 3’s until your child can repeat the answer quickly three days consecutively, then gradually move up to 12’s). Also encourage them to read numbers greater than 6 digits. Not only can you make a tremendous help in math, but provide your child a place an time to read at home. Ask them what text feature the author provided? How was the text feature helpful? In Science, ask them: How can you identify a mineral? (luster, breakage, color, color streak, and hardness) What are three types of rock? (Sedimentary, Igneous, and Metamorphic) What kind of rock is formed by extreme heat? (Igneous) What rock is formed underneath the ground with heat and pressure? (Metamorphic) Which rock is made of fossils, plants, and smaller rocks? (Sedimentary). Let them explore rocks and identify them! They will love you! We have just completed the district narrative writing prompt and we saw very positive results from their hard work. We will continue to build on this as we have moved into the expository writing process. Our students are on their way to becoming awesome writers!

Counselor’s Corner “Building Relationships to Create a Strong Community” In November, Mrs. Clarke, the school counselor, talked about making decisions, setting goals, and taking necessary action to achieve goals. In grades K-2, they designed a poster about behaviors we can do to help the teacher follow their daily schedule. In grades 3-5, they described and planned their graduations. This month, your child will be learning how to relate academics to the world of work, life at home, and in the community. In grades K-2, your child will be learning to work cooperatively in a school community. In grades 3-5, your child will be exploring how school relates to the world of work by learning about them and how they can make decisions about the future.

CUARTO GRADO Ha sido un Noviembre muy ocupado para los del cuarto grado! Hemos estado estudiando la multiplicación con múltiples dígitos y nuestros estudiantes están trabajando para aprender los diferentes métodos en resolver este tipo de problemas. ¡Muchos de nuestros estudiantes entienden hoy el porqué es tan importante saber los factores de multiplicación con facilidad, se les hace mas fácil el resolver problemas! Usted es una gran ayuda. Nosotros (maestros y sus niños) necesitamos que continúe con el proceso de aprender en casa. Por favor asegúrese de preguntarle a su niño que le resuelva un problema real de algo que se le presente. Deles el tiempo de pensar y explicarle como llegan a su respuesta. Para que le ayude a su niño tener éxito en Matemáticas: ponga una meta semanal de la multiplicación usando tarjetas de multiplicación (empiece con la tabla del 3 hasta que su niño repita la respuesta rápido tres días consecutivos, gradualmente hasta que llegue a la tabla del 12). También anímelos a que lean números con más de 6 dígitos. Esquina de la Consejera “Creando Relaciones para hacer una Comunidad Fuerte” En Noviembre, la Sra. Clarke, Consejera de la escuela, hablo acerca de tomar decisiones, poner metas, y tomar la acción necesaria para alcanzar sus metas. En los grados del Kg al 2do grado, ellos crearon un cartelón acerca de cómo comportarnos para ayudar a la maestra seguir su horario diario. En los grados del 3ro al 5to, han describieron y planearon sus graduaciones. Este mes, su niño estará aprendiendo de cómo relacionar lo académico con el mundo de trabajo, vida en casa, y en la comunidad. En los grados del Kg al 2do grado, su niño estará aprendiendo de cómo trabajar cooperativamente en la escuela comunitaria. En los grados del 3ro al 5to, su niño estará explorando a relacionarse con el mundo de trabajo en aprendiendo acerca de ellos y como pueden tomar decisiones acerca de su futuro.

This second nine-week grading period has been very creative for our art students. Their creative thinking and problem solving skills were evident in the beautiful art work that was so proudly displayed at our annual “Fall Country Jamboree” Student Art Show at the Pioneer Art Settlement for the Creative Arts in Barberville. The following Art students represented Pierson Elementary and really made our school shine. Congratulations to: Angel Escobar, Elizabeth Aviles, Christopher Hurtado, Jonah Lara, Eduardo Carbajal, Celeste Rubio, Skylar Ford, Francisco Perez, Hanna Harper, Juan Martinez, Linda Aviles, Perla Flores, Yulisa Sanchez, Angel Hernandez, Kristopher Manalla, Roselyn Avila, Jose Torres, Daysy Lopez, Emmanuel Reyes, Jesus Franco, Jose Mendez and Victor Taboada. Keep up the great work art students! Art students have been studying the elements of art using both visual and tactile texture. Shading techniques are introduced to turn two -dimensional shapes into three- dimensional shapes to create form. One point perspective, foreground, middle ground, back ground, still life, and value have also been our focus. These techniques are applied to classroom assignments incorporating science and math concepts. Our third nine- week lessons will include balance, harmony, color, proportions, abstract art, and emphasis. Famous artist’s works will be studied and used to illustrate these important Principles of Art. Noticias de Arte Este periodo de las segundas nueve semanas ha sido muy creativo para nuestros estudiantes de arte. Su pensamiento creativo y las habilidades de resolución de problemas son evidentes en la hermosa obra de arte que se mostró con tanto orgullo en nuestro “Jolgorio anual de Otoño ” la Presentación de Arte de Estudiantes que se lleva a cabo en el Centro Pionero de Arte en Barberville. Los siguientes estudiantes de arte representaron a la Escuela Primaria de Pierson y realmente hicieron brillar a nuestra escuela. Estudiantes mantengan el buen trabajo del arte! Los estudiantes de arte han estado estudiando los elementos del arte utilizando tanto lo visual como la textura tangible. Técnicas de sombreado son introducidas para convertir una forma de dos dimensiones en una de tres dimensiones para crear una forma. Una perspectiva de punto, primer plano, plano medio, fondo, vida inmóvil, y el valor también han sido nuestro enfoque. Estas técnicas se aplican en las asignaturas del salón de clase incorporando conceptos de Matemáticas y Ciencia. Nuestra tercera nueve lecciones de semana incluirá el equilibrio, la armonía, el color, las proporciones, el arte abstracto, y el énfasis. Obras del artista famoso serán estudiadas y utilizadas para ilustrar estos Principios Importantes del Arte. It’s Cold and Flu Season Again! It is the time of the year when students are looking forward to that well- deserved holiday break. It is also runny nose and cough season. Here are some health tips for cold and flu safety. Please share and practice with your children. Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue. Throw the tissue in the trash. Wash hands often with soap and water, or use hand sanitizer if soap and water are not available. Wipe down surfaces in the home with disinfectant as directed on the bottle. Keep your child away from others who are sick. If your child should become sick, he/she should stay home from school to avoid spreading the illness to other children. Keep children home for at least twenty-four hours after fever and/or vomiting/diarrhea has stopped. Fever should be gone without the use of fever-reducing medicine. A fever is defined as 100 degrees or higher. Thank you for your assistance in helping to keep our Pierson Patriots healthy. Mr. Myers Ms. Deane

De Nuevo es la Temporada de Gripe y Resfriados Es la época del año cuando los estudiantes están esperando unas merecidas vacaciones. También es la temporada de gripe y de toz. Aquí les ayudamos con unos consejos de salud para la seguridad de resfriados y gripe. Por favor comparta y practique con sus hijos. Cúbrase al toser y estornudar con un pañuelo desechable. Tire el pañuelo en la basura. Lávese las manos a menudo con agua y jabón, o usar desinfectantes de manos si el jabón de agua no está disponible. Limpie las superficies de la casa con un desinfectante como se indique con la botella. Mantenga a sus hijos alejado de otras personas que estén enfermos. Si sus hijos llegarán a enfermarse, él o ella deberían quedarse en la casa para evitar de transmitir la enfermedad a otros niños. Mantenga a sus niños en la casa por lo menos 24 horas después quela fiebre, vómitos y diarrea haya pasado. La fiebre debe desaparecer sin el uso de medicamentos antifebriles.
