PRESENTACIÓN / PRESENTATION El Buzo es un documental que retrata a Julio César Cu Cámara, jefe del equipo de buceo del Sistema de Drenaje de la Ciudad de México. El trabajo de este buzo, inédito, es destapar cualquier tipo de bloqueo que no permita que el agua pueda drenarse fuera de la ciudad y así evitar el riesgo de desastres en una urbe que ha sufrido grandes inundaciones a lo largo de su historia. Julio es el único buzo que queda del equipo original que se formó a principios de los años ochenta. En aquel entonces eran tres; uno murió buceando en los túneles, otro renunció, y sólo resta Julio, que ya tiene edad para retirarse pero se niega a hacerlo, disfruta enormemente cada momento de su trabajo. The Diver is a documentary about Julio César Cu Cámara, chief diver of the Mexico City Sewerage System. His job, unprecedented, is to repair pumps and dislodge the garbage that gets stuck in the sewage canals in order to keep the city’s waste waters circulating, thus avoiding the risk of catastrophes in a city with a long history of floods.

Julio is the only diver left from the original team, formed in the eighties. Of the original three; one died diving in the sewage, the other resigned, and then there is Julio, who is already old enough to retire but has no intention of doing so, he enjoys every moment of his working life.

PERSONAJE / MAIN CHARACTER Julio César Cu Cámara es el jefe del equipo de buceo del Sistema de Drenaje de la Ciudad de México. Un hombre cálido y orgulloso de su trabajo. A Julio le ha fascinado el agua desde niño; cuando era joven aprendió a bucear y después de varios cursos terminó enamorándose de la profesión. Se dedica a dar mantenimiento a las bombas y a sacar objetos de los canales para mantener la circulación adecuada de las aguas negras. El trabajo de Julio es invisible para la sociedad: es una especie de héroe anónimo. Julio César Cu Cámara is the chief diver of the Mexico City Sewerage System. He is a kind man, proud of the work he does. Julio has loved the water since childhood; as a young man he learned scuba diving and fell in love with the profession. His job is to repair pumps and dislodge the garbage that gets stuck in the sewage canals in order to keep the city’s waste waters circulating, Julio’s job is invisible to society – he is an anonymous hero.

TEXTO SOBRE JULIO / ABOUT JULIO Aprendió a observar con las manos desde hace 31 años. Al principio se confundía con las dimensiones de algún objeto que estorbaba el paso del agua por alguna compuerta, en otras fallaba en diferenciar un tronco de un tubo. “Esto se trata de paciencia —dice él—, calma, concentración, mucho trabajo y tacto”. Sensibilidad que traspase los guantes y reúna todos los sentidos. Él es como un pez, definitivamente, porque es muy difícil de localizar en tierra firme, más en época de lluvias, cuando las emergencias se presentan una tras otra. La basura y nuestra terrible educación nos hacen rehenes en esta ciudad de México. Por Celia Gómez Ramos Thirty-one years ago, Julio learned how to observe with his hands. At first, he would get confused with the sizes of objects blocking the flow of water into the sluice gates. Other times he would fail to differentiate a log from a pipe: “This is all about patience,” -he says.“serenity, concentration, a lot of work and a good sense of touch.” Indeed, Julio’s job requires a sensibility that goes beyond his diving gloves and fuses all of his senses. Julio is like a fish, he is nowhere to be found on dry land, especially during the rainy season, when emergencies arise one after another. The garbage and our terrible littering habits are slowly turning us into hostages of Mexico City’s depths. By Celia Gómez Ramos

PALABRAS DEL DIRECTOR / DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Yo soy buzo; creo que empecé a bucear por esa inquietud que tengo de conocer nuevos mundos. Cuando me enteré del trabajo de Julio, no me podía imaginar lo que era sumergirse en el vacío negro de las aguas residuales sabiendo el riesgo que esto implica. Me interesaba, sobre todo,  conocer la experiencia de Julio al sumergirse en las profundidades de las aguas negras. Creo que tanto él como su trabajo representan un momento histórico dado y pueden ser un espejo de ciertos aspectos de la condición humana. I am a scuba diver myself. I think I started diving to quench my thirst for discovering new worlds. When I found out about Julio’s job, I couldn’t imagine what it was like to dive into the black void of the waste waters, knowing the risks that entails. I was especially interested in Julio’s personal experience and how he felt while diving into the depths of the sewage. I think Julio’s job and his experience not only reflect a historical moment of man and society; they can also mirror certain aspects of the human condition.

Estudió comunicaciones en Macquarie University en Australia y cinematografía en el Centro Universitario de Estudios Cinematográficos (CUEC UNAM). En 2008 asistió al primer Talent Campus Guadalajara especializado en documental, y en 2012 participó en el Berlinale Talent Campus como director durante el Festival de Cine de Berlín. Sus cortometrajes se han presentado en diversos festivales alrededor del mundo. En el año 2010, su documental Río Lerma mereció el Premio José Rovirosa como mejor documental hecho por un estudiante, al año siguiente se hizo merecedor de un Ariel a Mejor Corto Documental otorgado por la AMACC y de una mención por el Festival Short Shorts. Con su cortometraje El baile de tres cochinillas ganó en 2013 el premio a Mejor Director en el Festival Proyección Corta. Su documental más reciente, El Buzo, ganó en 2015 el premio a Mejor Cortometraje Documental para el Festival Internacional de Cine de Morelia. Born in Mexico City on October 19th, 1979. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Media and Cultural Studies from Macquarie University, Australia and Filmmaking from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). In 2008, he participated in the first Talent Campus Guadalajara, specializing in documentary filmmaking, organized by the Guadalajara International Film Festival in coordination with the Berlinale Talent Campus. In 2012, he attended the Berlinale Talent Campus in Berlin as a director. His short films have been exhibited at national and international film festivals. In 2010, his documentary Lerma River won the José Rovirosa Prize for Best Student Documentary. In 2011, he won a Mexican Ariel Award for Best Short Documentary and received a special mention at the Short Shorts Film Festival 2011. With the short film The Dance of Three Woodlice, Arrangoiz won the Best Director Award at the Proyección Corta Festival 2013. His most recent documentary film, The Diver, won the 2015 Morelia International Film Festival’s Award for Best Short Documentary. 6/8
