HUMAN RESOURCE NEWS BRITISH COLUMBIA / YUKON COUNCIL ISSUE 7 - SPRING 2023

WELCOME WELCOME

NEW TEAM MEMBERS

Hi everyone, and welcome to spring!

Nina Hong – January 3 Position: Administrative Assistant, Abbotsford Fun Fact: I can deadlift 90 lbs.

We are taking the opportunity to do a bit of spring cleaning and are looking at ways to improve this newsletter. You’ll notice this edition is shorter and it’s because recently we spent some time reviewing data around Pulse readership, including how many read it and what sections are the most popular. What we’ve seen indicates that we can make some changes! So, for the next while, we’ll be looking at how we can improve Pulse and ensure it meets the objectives we set. We’ll be exploring other options on communicating recognition, new team members, staff anniversaries, and business operation updates. PULSE (HR NEWS) St. John Ambulance BC/Yukon SPRING EDITION, APRIL 2023 Your Human Resources Department: Bhumica Bery, Director Jasmine Gardiner, Manager Laura Chu, HR Generalist

A few other changes you can also look forward to are some more engaging initiatives from the Social Committee as they recently had three new members join. Thank you Alex Burry, Anita Lui, and Hayley Jarvis for signing on to help the team with new activities! Lastly, we want to thank everyone for facilitating and participating in the first annual performance review cycle. It’s an important process for all employees’ future growth and in identifying the goals and work deliverables for this year’s performance plans. We want to continue hearing from you! We encourage all employees to reach out to us with your thoughts on the Pulse newsletter, what you like about it and/ or what you’d like to see included or removed. Let us know your thoughts!”

BIG WINS & SHOUT OUTS

Thank you to Sukh for being a mentor to me and this new role. I have learned so much about my ability and patience in my new role. Shout out to all the branches for giving me their time to help clean up these accounts and feedback to help us improve as changes are being made. – Rainey Chubak

Big thank you to Alex Burry, Michael de Beaupre, and Chris Chan for their ongoing and continued support receiving pallets upon pallets of equipment for HWP. Specifically, thank you for working with the tracking tool to estimate deliveries, help with the heavy lifting, taking photos of items and sharing updates. I am sure that if a carrier pigeon could find a way to deliver a package for this project, it would! I am grateful for the cross-department support, as many hands have made light work. – Ashten Jung

Shoutout to Heather Ferguson for driving up to Kamloops on short notice to mentor and qualify a new instructor to teach Emergency First Aid for Industry. Also, to Danni Laidlaw for travelling to Terrace on short notice to teach a TE class then to mentor and qualify a new instructor to teach TE. – Chris Chan I like to give a shout-out to Veronica Davidson. She joined the BCY SJA family in Oct 2022. Not only is she a quick learner, but she also volunteered to be on the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) in Dec 2022. Great start Veronica! Another one is Amelia Chan, she joined the BCY SJA family in Sept 2022 and this is her first office job in Canada. Not only is she an extremely fast learner, but after several months she started to help a new employee by mentoring her. – Anita Lui

A loud shout out to Alex Burry for his unwavering support and dedication to both the Vancouver branch and SJA in general. Reporting to him while working in Operations, I observed a huge, positive turnaround with regards to engagement with volunteers, and with instructors. It was also fantastic to see how quickly the newest branch team rallied around, while in the process virtually eliminating many of the previous frustrations and issues. In my personal experience, Alex was proactively supportive, looking for advancement opportunities for me and encouraging me to embrace the unknown. And last but certainly not least, a shout out to the Vancouver branch reception staff, who are always smiling, consistently a pleasure to work with and who embody professional and courteous customer service. – Graham Spence Shoutout to David Hoong, who on two occasions went above and beyond to support HWP and SUAP. During the Round Up AME event, David took extra care to help with set up, take down, and managing registrations. He went the extra mile, offering to grab lunch and coffees, to help with tech/audio questions, and in general be a real good sport and team player. He also helped in the big inventory of the HWP equipment, offing solutions and suggestions to tracking, recording, storing, and organizing. This was not an area that he had to lend a hand, and we in CS were very appreciative of his support. Thank you, David, for always being willing to help and to share a laugh. – Ashten Jung
