ABSTRACT
The Representa_ti~riof Reality in "Siete Lunas
Siete Serpientes"
-
The Spanish Conquest caused a cultural clash in America, the effects of which endure the passage of time,
The imposition of a
new culture by the Spaniards initiated a process of acculturation and syncretism, which gives Latin America a di3tinctive identity reflected on its sociai, political, and economic structures, as well as on manifestations of art.
Until the end of the last Century, Latin American fiction reflected the I n d i a n reality mostly from a European rationalistic perspective.
Early this Century, however, a number of
Latin
American writers attempted to portray the Indians showing also t h e i r mythology.
Thir new way of presenting the reality of fiction
confused t h e literary critic, who resorted to inaccurate terms such as "realisrno rn&gico" and "lo real maraviiloso" to classify this kind of narrative. This thesis analyzes the novel Siete Lunas
y
Siete Serpientes
by t h e Ecuadorian author Demetrio Aguilera Malta, focusing on the
study of the mythical portrajal of the characters in the novel, as well as that of animals and super~aturalcreatures. A semi01 ogical analysis of these elements shows that the characters in this novel
perform a dual role: the one assigned by the zuthor within the plot, and one in a mythical dimension.
Some a • ’ the characters can
become, or get features of certain animals, which in a mythical
world represent the vices and defects of these characters, and even the devil to whom some of the characters arc associated in the iii
villagers mind.
From this analysis it becomes clear that
a
recognition and understanding of myth and of the Ecuadorian mythology is a key element to understand the novel, since the reality of fiction is conveyed to the reader through myth.
It is
my contention, that the plot and the characters in the novel are
depicted from a mythical perspective in addition to the r a t i o n a l one.
They defy the boundaries of "objectivity" of the rational
consciousness.
The way in which myth affects the lives of the
three races (indian-white-black) present in the novel is also explored. Siete Lunas y Siete Serpientes is a novel of social protest, which presents a society divided and confronted by discrimination, oppressive policies and ambition for power.
The three groups of
power typical to Latin American societies are presented in this novel : the government, the economic power and the Catholic Church. This thesis analizes the function of these three powers in the novel, as well
as the portrayal of
the main
characters
as
prototypes of a social group. Dernetrio Aguilera Malta long standing commitment to depict society ills and denounce them, as well as his attempt to reflect
the mythical world vision stil 1 alive in Latin America, converge in Siete Lunas Y Siete S e r p i e n t ~which makes it an ambitious novel and a testimony reality.

perspectiva americana.
A s i por ejemplo,
