MISSION STATEMENT The mission of our community is rooted in Jesus the Christ. This mission is to hear, respond to and proclaim the word of God as found in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures. Through the Sunday Eucharist we are called to ongoing conversion and personal spiritual formation. As a community, we are challenged to provide mutual support for a Catholic Christian lifestyle and are empowered to use our gifts to minister to the needs of others. We commit our selves to the beatitudes, to the spiritual and corporal works of mercy, and to minister to the larger communities in which we live and work. We respect the dignity of every person, at all ages and stages of life. We hand on our Catholic heritage through catechesis, worship, service and witness. In carrying out this mission we further the kingdom of God in our midst.

Fourteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

DEPONGAMOS LAS ARMAS DE LA GUERRA

SETTING ASIDE THE WEAPONS OF WAR Why, we might ask the prophet Zechariah today, would God want to banish chariots and horses? The answer follows: because they are used to violate God’s reign of peace, along with the warrior’s bow. In the days of Zechariah, chariots and horses were high-priced items used only for war-making. They were the aircraft carriers and nuclear missiles of his day. And for his culture, which thought of any king as being a military leader first and foremost, a king riding on a lowly beast of burden to proclaim peace without horses, chariots, and bows would have set his listeners topsy-turvy. This lowly, beast-riding king of peace, we believe, was fulfilled in Jesus, gentle and humble of heart. In a world torn by military strife often generated by differing religious views, and even in our own lives and homes where we are often at “war” over the tiniest things, we would do well to stop and consider to what degree we are willing to be like that “king” whose way of gentleness and humility is the way for us to find rest for our weary souls. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

T HE P ASTOR’ S C OLUMN During the past several weeks, we have experienced many special Eucharistic Celebrations. The Easter season ended with Pentecost Sunday, which is the anniversary of our Catholic Church with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. On Pentecost Sunday, we read the Gospel of John that tells us when Jesus stood in the midst of His disciples and said “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” We then celebrated the Feast of the Holy Trinity; the revelation of God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit, but one Triune God. This was followed by Corpus Christi; that is, The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Jesus proclaimed that whoever eats His flesh and drinks His blood would have eternal life. This feast was followed by the celebrations of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary. These celebrations emphasized the true love for us, human beings, in the heart of our Lord Jesus Christ. This led us into last week, the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul. Jesus handed to Peter the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven. Peter and Paul left their lives and world as they knew it, a life of darkness and worldly things, in order to become faithful and true followers of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ Himself taught them the word of God. For the sake of our souls, He taught them everything they would need to continue on with their “Journey of Faith,” to spread the word of God to all they encountered. Jesus Christ taught them what they needed to know in order to build and establish His Church on earth. Peter and Paul were able to spread the word of salvation to all and establish our Catholic Church and pass their heritage of faith to the next generations through out time. Over hundreds of years the Catholic Church has had over 250 Popes, along with thousands of Bishops and millions of clergy worldwide that have continued to grow our Catholic Church by spreading the word of God. In today’s world we all need to be like Peter and Paul, we need to set the example of what a Catholic truly is. All of us are in communion with the true Catholic Church that Jesus Christ founded. It is up to us to continue to keep, maintain, and build our Catholic Church. We can do this by being good stewards of our time, talent and treasures. It is up to us to make sure that we have a vibrant Church to pass on to our next generations, not just a physical place to call home, not just a building but we need to pass on our knowledge of faith, the true teachings of our Lord Jesus Christ. During this past month of celebrations we also celebrated First Communions and Confirmations to many children of our Parish. These weren’t just milestones; these were Sacraments of the Catholic Church. This is the beginning of their knowledge of our Catholic faith. It is up to us as a community to continue helping them to grow in their journey of faith. The children of our parish are the future of our Catholic Church. May Almighty God Bless us and Guide us with His Holy Presence as we continue to build His Body, the Church in order to remain in communion with Him.

6 de Julio de 2014 DEL

P ASTOR

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Confirmation is complicated, at least in its history. It arose in response to real problems deeply felt, not the least of which was the desire of the bishop to minister to all who were baptized. But it also has to do with the early crisis of how to deal with persons baptized by congregations that had broken bonds with the greater church: heretics. People reasoned that no matter how wrong-headed the minister might be, Christ would always work in the waters of baptism. No matter what, God would sweep aside all human obstacles to claim the new life in the water. They were not so sure about the ability of someone who had broken with the church to confer the Spirit. By the fifth century, already-baptized persons coming into the church were anointed with chrism but not rebaptized. This anointing with myron or chrism was seen as an act of reconciliation by the church, and a seal upon the commitments vowed by the newcomer. Today, we preserve this ancient practice by never “rebaptizing” Christians who have been baptized in water in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We affirm the candidates’ baptismal dignity, and we celebrate confirmation at their first reception of the Eucharist. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
