Dear Crane Scouts Mr Emmanuel Pritish Andrew Sameer Group Scout Leader Dunman High Crane Scouts

A very happy Chinese New Year to all! In 2022 as we move towards a more COVID resilient nation, we are Dunman High Crane Scouts are looking forward to the return of many of our traditional activities and practices. While we were able to transition many of activities online, and were pleased to stay in touch with our friends and patrol mates, there is a sense that some of the best scouting memories are made outdoors. In this newsletter, I welcome all readers to share in some of the activities that we have taken part in and are proud of. The return of the CCA Orientation, which has always been an opportunity for the Scouts to showcase their talents and abilities. As well as Patrol Activities, Venture Activities, and Lion Dance. While COVID has disrupted most things, I would say that our Scouts have shown a tremendous degree of resilience to not only weather the storm, but also to have emerged stronger and wiser from the experience. We are all looking forward to brighter days ahead, and we look forward to sharing more of those moments with you as well!

65TH Anniversary 海浪滔滔我不怕!

Woooo! 65 years of scouting in Dunman high, we celebrate this wondrous occasion on the 20th November 2021 with many fun activities. During the event, we saw the looks of many alumni taking the opportunity and celebrating our 65th anniversary with us. To commemorate how far we’ve come, the individual scouts patrols made their own mini netting designs which were showcased on our social media pages. We had also opened a time capsule that was sealed since the 55th anniversary campfire. It was a beautiful occasion as old generation scouts and those that were still serving the school come together and commemorate how far we have come as a tuan. Under the overarching theme of “海 浪漂漂我不怕” , a lyric from the children’s song 捕鱼 歌. It shows that even in the toughest times, we still keep on going.

Year 1 CCA Orientation 台上一分钟,台下十年功

Here’s to months of CCA Orientation

With the conclusion of the CCA exhibition, we have finally finished our annual orientation preparation. A yearly event where we showcase the fun and exciting activities in scouts, we were proud to present what we had done for 2022! Although covid had restricted what we could do, we still pulled through and managed to give it our all. Our journey starts with the Year 4s having to plan out what they would like to do for the CCA exhibition in order to gain the interests of the juniors. With the different committees planning different things such as pioneering committee planning a ship. Through a tedious number of submissions, the orientation preparation was a go,

The year 2 and year 3 scouts and guides came back to school to join their seniors in ensuring that this orientation was a success. After 3 days of hard work, the final products were completed, ranging from a claw machine by the games committee to a cable car by the gadgeting committee. The experience taught us many different soft skills such as communication, and leadership. Ultimately, this orientation preparation, for many of us, has grown to something more than just attracting year 1s to join our CCA but something larger, it taught us life skills that we can bring about in our daily lives and it also allowed us to grow closer to our peers.

From the OIC: As the Scouts OIC (Overall In-Charge), OP was certainly a new experience for me. As a Patrol Leader, I have grown accustomed to leading a group of members. However, as OIC, I am not leading followers, but rather a team of leaders. To say that it wasn’t easy would be a major understatement. Throughout the entire OP, I was constantly fretting about the progress of different committees, and hoping to think of possible solutions to solve a committee’s problem. OP is a test of adaptability and one’s problem solving capabilities. This was one of the first major events that we finally got to participate in physically with the guides. Even though the preparations towards the exhibition were hectic and many problems had arose, we still managed to pull through as a 团.

小 队 活 动 Crane Scouts in COVID Scouting revolves largely around nature. Hikes, outdoor cooking, pioneering are all skills that we train frequently and are proud of. But, when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, Scouting as we know it had to evolve. Our 领 导 层 has since worked tirelessly to plan 小队活动 that are fun, enriching and safe. We are proud to have such leaders amongst us.

During this 集合 , my patrol learnt about the national symbols of Singapore and their importance and role in uniting the nation. We dove deep into each symbol such as the national flower of Singapore and the Merlion head. As a patrol, we split into 2 groups and competed in a national symbol design competition which further taught us how to design an impacting and unbiased national symbol. To end off, we had a kahoot quiz to further hone our knowledge. This 集合 was fun and enriching, helping us deepen our love and understanding for our nation. It felt refreshing to once again gather together with my Scouts and learn alongside them.

LION by JULIAN TAY In the online CCA, we attempted to clear the observer badge, which required us to observe images and recollect at least a certain number of items seen in the photo. In the process of completing this task, we developed different methods of recollection and memory retention. All of us answered the questions and sent the answers to our Patrol Leader. As such, clearing this badge taught everyone to persevere, when we do not succeed on the first try, we can try again until we ultimately finish the task, in this case an assessment.

On 5 November, we had a cca jihe. At the start of the jihe, we played games such as skribble and other drawing games. After that, we learnt about national symbols, and their significance. From this sharing, i learnt that national symbols represent the nation. For example, the crescent in the Singapore flag symbolises a young nation on the ascendant. Next, we learnt about the different drills. We learnt what to do when a command is said. Overall, this jihe was quite interesting as we could learn about other’s perspectives from the drawing game and I learnt about the national symbols and also about the different drills.

For today's patrol activity, being the first patrol activity back from a long break, did FML and Lash training competition. The lash training competition was meant to be used as a refresher for the Y2s and Y3s, allowing them to recap on their square and diagonal lashes. The competition was to give more incentive to them to tie and 抽 their lashes harder in order for them to win. The competition was done in 2 groups. With each group given a frame for them to tie square lashes on. They were given 3 minutes to tie the initial square lash, then swap frames with the other group to 拆掉 or sabotage the other groups lashes. Finally, they were given a small amount of time to fix the rest of their lash. This, however had a different effect. The Y2s and Y3s decided to use other methods to prevent their lash from being 拆掉 quick. They tied many half hitches and 绕 to make it much more difficult to take out. In the end, most of the lashes didnt have good quality and were partially completed. I think that more enforcement on the rules is needed to prevent this from happening again

During this jihe, we first went on a virtual tour of the Istana. We learnt about the history of the Istana and the function of the Istana. After that, we played a game of Jeopardy about scouts. It helped year 2s and year 1s to revise skills learnt in scouts and have fun at the same time. Then, we were given an hour to create a play performance. We decided to perform a horror skit and it ended up better than we expected. We took a break by playing word bomb with my patrolmates where we had fun and improved our vocabulary. Lastly, we ended with physical training when we did push-ups and wall sits. After this jihe I feel more bonded with my partolmates and learnt something new

With the continuation of the digital CCA lessons, it is evident that despite the tough challenges, we still managed to enjoy ourselves. During our scouting session today, we were tasked by our y3’s to fulfill some requirements for a certain badge. This included activities such as researching and cross-comparing scouting experiences with different countries, better understanding of the national pledge and its respective symbols. Thereafter, we went on for bonding activities, including games like jkml as well as haxball, which fostered bonds between us, strengthening our relationships as a patrol. Overall, it was meaningful, allowed us to complete a badge while bonding with our patrol mates. 05/11/21

My Covid Story

By MERSON CHEONG (Ex-Rayfish 队长)

Covid-19 took us by storm in late 2019, drastically transforming our lives. Some would believe that this has hastened human advancement. For instance, the shift to Work from Home arrangements – an idea companies were cautious of, as well as rise of prominence of mRNA vaccine, which may not be so popular amongst many people. Regardless, there is no doubt that the pandemic has opened many opportunities for us. During my National Service in 2019 – 2020, I was fortunate enough to be trained as a Combat Medic where I learnt critical skills, namely Emergency Medical Intervention skills and giving injections, otherwise nearly impossible to learn outside unless you get a Nursing Certificate. This equipped with the necessary qualifications to aid Singapore’s Vaccination efforts after finishing my service. Working as a Vaccinator has contributed to my world view. I witnessed different groups of people by being there at the beginning of vaccination campaigns to when the differentiated restrictions were applied to individuals based on vaccination status and finally to when government pushed for a booster dose. I learnt that the general public is not very well-informed regarding mRNA vaccines, and it is frightening how fake news can easily cause distrust amongst people. This most commonly

include people saying, ‘My friend say the vaccine can cause xxxx disease’ and ‘Vaccine come out so quickly, definitely a conspiracy’. I also learnt some interesting lessons. Several people demanded for a doctor or senior nurse to perform a simple inoculation for them as they deemed me or my colleagues as ‘too young and thus unqualified’. This made me realise an issue in society - people correlating a person’s ability to his/her age, one simple example would be teachers - people tend to assume older teachers are able to teach better when that is not definitely the case. While, for my instance, senior nurses and onsite doctors are responsible for administrative tasks and therefore may not be as competent as vaccinators who do more than 100 injections per day. Another lesson I learnt was that the people you work with is potentially more important the nature of the job. Being a vaccinator was definitely interesting and fun at the beginning, however its repetitive nature is draining, and the human brain will demand for something novel. What really kept me going was the new friends I made while working at the vaccination centre. From this, I learnt that when selecting a pathway in the future, perhaps I should place more emphasis on the kind of environment I will be in and the people there rather than so much of the nature of the work.

Kanshoku Ramen Bar ION Orchard, #B3 - 18, Singapore 238801

Orchard MRT NS22 https://bit.ly/cranefoodie

So there is actually this place at the bottom of Orchard Central that sells very good bowls of ramen. It’s called Kanshoku Ramen Bar. Not ordinary tonkotsu or miso ramen, but truffle infused soup ramen. Like many ramen types, the soup is oily but there is a distinct taste of truffle oil in it. Ordering is extremely easy, with only 3 types of ramen available from the stall (it’s more like a ramen bar) - dry, spicy and soup if I remember correctly. With a simple paper-andpen system, one can also customise the texture, soup thickness and amount of oil in your own ramen. The bowl also comes with a generous amount of char shu, an onsen egg and seaweed to share. All in all, I recommend this place 10/10

President Scout Award By RAENN HAN (Rover)

The fifth Scout Law: a Scout has courage in all difficulties. Nothing quite encapsulates this phrase as the moment when two of our Ventures from the 2021 V2s batch, Sean Khoo and Joe Zhou, were conferred the President’s Scout Award (PSA) by President Halimah Yacob on the 8th of December, 2021. Their journey has been everything but smooth-sailing, being rife with adversities. Nevertheless, they pressed on. The President’s Scout Award is the pinnacle of achievement of Scouting in Singapore, the highest honours only awarded to the nation’s most outstanding Ventures. It would be an understatement to say that Joe and Sean have brought honour to our unit through this event, for it is their second time attaining the highest level of achievement. In 2019, both were

awarded the Chief Commissioner’s Award as Scouts, later going on to mentor 11 juniors over the course of 2 years to do the same during their time as Ventures. Sharing his Scouting story, Sean mentions how despite having been in Scouting for almost 10 years since Primary 3, his passion for Scouting has only grown with each passing year. Recollecting his 10 years-long journey, one particular memory stands out - his 2017 Standard Camp experience. He shares, “at night, we turned on many lights and tried to make the atmosphere as lively as possible. These moments, even though it was spent sitting around with my friends and chatting, are what makes Scouting so fun for me.” It was memorable experiences like these that caused both boys to develop a passion for

鹤童学期报 giving back to their community, our Scout troop. Fuelled by these fervent flames, they eventually joined back as Ventures in Senior High and strived for the PSA, taking up key positions of leadership like Ventures Chairperson (Sean) and Chairperson of the Uniformed Group Council (Joe). When treading on a path fraught with difficulties, it is easy to give up, turn back, and call it a day. Despite this, Sean and Joe continued to press on with their path. Both reflected on how their biggest challenge was balancing schoolwork and Scouting. After all, Scout or not, they still had to sit for the A-Level examinations at the end of the year. While planning the annual Patrol Leader’s Training Camp, it clashed with the first major examination in Y6, the March Common Tests. Similarly, a key assessment in the PSA journey, the Ventures Challenge Course, took place when the Y6 Preliminary Examinations were right around the corner. Resultantly, both of them had to spend even more time and effort than their peers to catch up with their revision. “我曾一度认为自己在种种原因和压力之 下,不可能获得这个奖项,但是我做到了,我很庆 幸自己的付出有所收获。”

In this quote during an interview with local newspaper 联 合 早 报 , Sean aptly summarises

Road To PSA

one’s feelings of fear and uncertainty whilst on a difficult path. Still, both pressed on, supported by Scouters, Rovers, peers, fellow Scouts, and family. Let this be a reminder as to why we should continue to grit our teeth and press ahead even in tough times, as what is highlighted in the Scout Laws: a Scout has courage in all difficulties. Once again, congratulations to Sean Khoo and Joe Zhou for being recipients of the PSA and making our troop proud! 我们给他 们三个! Yaska! Yaska! Yaska!

Book Review

by KAH WHYE (Rover)

Set during the American Civil War, The Mysterious Island follows the adventures of 5 men who escaped the war in a hot air balloon, only to find themselves lost on an island. They set up camp with the intent to survive their ordeal, starting with the production of fire and clean water, as well as trying to alert others of their disappearance. As their ordeal drags, they slowly transition from survival to living comfortably on the island. Tools were built, along with the development of a security system. They even domesticated an orangutan as a pet! However, just as they were getting comfortable, the men discovered they might not be alone on the island and soon set out to uncover its mysteries.

The Mysterious Island by Jules Verne ISBN: 9781840226249 Central Public Library | Adult | 843.8 VER

As a scout, the development of their survival skills, while highly fictionalised, is truly inspiring and engaging. Verne masterfully explains the science behind several proceedings, incorporating it seamlessly into the storyline in a unique and thought-provoking style. Readers should look forward to the many twists and turns that develop throughout the story, especially his Extraordinary Voyages series followers. This book is undoubtedly one of Verne’s finest works. I would highly recommend it to those who joined scouting seeking a little adventure but cannot do so amidst the global pandemic.
