Ndonie, NOT JUST YOUR REGULAR DJ

We all have dreams, the difference is, not all of us chose to chase them. The way those of us choose to go about making our dreams a reality also differs. Some of us start the chase and run out of steam along the way due to a variety of reasons. The drive and determination it takes to actualise a dreams can only be understood by the person going after it. BY MBUSI MZOLO Photographs by White Gold Media

Choosing to chase a dream is a tall feat, now imagine how harder it is going after multiple dreams. Noncebo “DJ Ndonie” Nyembe knows all about the art and science of going after what you want. Ndonie is a multifaceted entertainer and entrepreneur. She chose to go after her dreams in when she identified a gap in sports and entertainment in 2015. Being a DJ was her entry into the entertainment world. She started learning how to DJ while studying Financial Management at Majuba TVET College in Newcastle. She enlisted the help of one of the lecturers, in a different faculty to sharpen her skills. She continued practising by herself outside the informal introductory classes she had with the lecturer. Due to a need to formalise her DJ training she felt she had to enrol at an accredited institution that offers qualifications in the art of being a DJ. That’s when she enrolled at DJ Zinhle’s Fuse Academy, she graduated in 2017. Ndonie’s will to be the best at what she does and her being in a constant process of growth meant she had to keep teaching herself more skills even after graduating from Fuse Academy.

10

Throughout her studies at Majuba and Fuse, Ndonie has been developing her skills in other parts of entertainment too. She decided to organise events to complement her output as a DJ. This led to her developing a wide network of artists and other practitioners in the entertainment field. Her dream to be a premier DJ and event’s organiser has morphed into other areas of entertainment. Being a Booking Agent is one of the multiple jobs she has. She is responsible for bringing acts like Nasty C, Nomcebo Zikode, Q Mark, and a host other high performing artists in the country to some of the biggest events in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. She has been hosting her One Woman Show since 2015. Her skills as a DJ, Artist, Booking Agent, Event’s Organiser, and Entrepreneur are all on full display whenever she hosts her shows. In last cases the different roles at such events are filled by a wide selection of professionals but in Ndonie’s case, she does most of the work herself. This goes to show how determined she is to make all her dreams a reality, and not compromise any parts of herself in attaining them. This year she will host the 9th edition of her ‘One Woman Show’. The work that has gone into the preparation for this one is very different to the previous ones. She wants the 9th edition to be “massive” that is why she has, “done a lot of activations since the beginning of November and I think they will determine the success of the main event.”

C O V E R S T O R Y | sibizimagazine.co.za

2022 is the year Ndonie chose to be more intentional with her social media use. She has started creating more content to create hype around her projects, ranging from live events, radio performances to new music releases. Her job as a booking agent opened her eyes and made her aware of the integral role social media stats play - an artist with a bigger social media presence can command higher booking fees. She is currently looking for someone to manage her social media output. Plans for a new brand positioning strategy also include in investing in the way she portrays herself. Getting “a personal photographer that can assist with creating proper and clean content” is also on the cards. She feels like TikTok offers a platform for her to produce some of her most creative content.

Ndonie is always looking for new opportunities inside and outside of entertainment. When the Covid-19 Lockdown disrupted the entertainment scene and rendered a lot of talent inactive Ndonie choose to venture into alcoholic beverages. She founded Idlozi Gin alongside Bongiwe Sijaji in 2020. The beverage is currently available to order via Ndonie’s WhatsApp. Idlozi is also shipped internationally. Future plans for the beverage include making it available to a wider market through partnerships with all major retailers. Ndonie and Bongiwe want the brand to boost “our economy and change people’s lives” by creating jobs through localised manufacturing all the way to point of sale opportunities.

The entertainment industry is infamous for its chaotic pace and it’s here-today-gonetomorrow dynamics. Individuals who manage to stay on track and not succumb to the pressure often have anchors outside the turbulent environment. For Ndonie the grounding comes from the lessons she got while growing up. Her relationship with God gives her strength to “take things as they come because at the end of the day life has ups and downs”. She finds joy in being alive and sees each day as a new beginning.

Community empowerment is very close to Ndonie’s heart. Her “uncomfortable upbringing” is the primary influence in the work she does for the community. She believes in the saying “umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu” and she carries it everywhere she goes, that is why she believes “in helping people ngolwazi”. She has two foundations to serve the needs of the community. The first one is Phenomenal Ladies and Gents; this organisation focuses on uplifting everyone who needs help in the community. She also has the Ndonie Foundation, the focus for this organisation is women. She would like to advance her community empowerment efforts by partnering with relevant government departments and other compatible entities in the private sector. She has a vested interest in the environmental and social development space “because there’s a lot that is going on in the world the pollution that we have done resulting in such horrible climate change. Our people lack information”. She would like to help in educating people about the different ways we can help make the world a better place for all of us.

She believes in the saying “umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu” and she carries it everywhere she goes, that is why she believes “in helping people ngolwazi”. With all the work Ndonie does outside of music her focus is never removed from the main goal. And part of the goal becoming an international act. She wants to perform at some of the biggest stages in the world. Her passport has been getting a few stamps over the years, she has performed in Bostwana, Lesotho and Mozambique. She is on a quest to make a mark in other international territories. She believes “Mvelinqangi” and hard work will open the doors for her. She continues to release multi-genre singles on her label Eyamanzi Entertainment. Lately her focus is on developing a new sound she calls Spiritual Amapiano. She is looking to build on the already popular musical genre by adding elements that will elevate it to new heights. In the past she has released Gqom tracks, including “Gida Dloz’lami”. She has collaborated with several artists with varying degrees of popularity. Music for her is about feelings and connection and she will continue to look for the best feelings to share with the world. Ndonie is an inspiration to many and takes care of a lot of people. So who does a powerhouse like herself look up to for inspiration. She is inspired by people who “put their vision in to action.” People who are willing to do everything it takes to make their dreams a reality. We look forward to seeing Ndonie make more of her dreams a reality. SM

AMONG SKIN CARE THORNS

14

Growing up the only girl among boys, a rose among many thorns is what she describes herself as. I could say that this has built a tenacious spirit in her, which is very audible in her raspy-grit, sanguine, assertive voice. Tenacity-the quality or fact of being very determined. I would say Mantombi’s general approach to life, the word that best describes my lasting thought of her. B Y K E L E B O G I L E M AT S E P E

ailing from Mpumalanga, Denelspruit. Thee poised woman in Skin care, Mantombi Makhubela is a digital content creator in skincare. Her story doesn’t begin with skin care though, in fact it is quite far off. She graduated from the University of Johannesburg in 2020, with a degree in Community Development and Leadership.

Having grown up an outspoken and boisterous young girl even from school, being the leader in all things artsy. She was very much interested in entertainment but that didn’t “materialise in the way that I thought it could”. After being asked what she wanted to do with her life, not knowing herself at this point, pulled her to do some introspection. This is where the gem was dug out. Remembering her love for the simple things and how she has always loved to take care of herself as a girl (especially being the only rose among thorns) to constantly being complimented on her good skin -self-care!

SPITFIRE QUESTIONS: 5 QUIRKY THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT MANTOMBI:

1.

Sunrise Or Sunset, Which Do You Prefer And Why?

I prefer sunrise, it’s a sign of a new day. A fresh start, a new perspective to face all your parts with new grace.

“2017 was literally an entire new journey for me”. She sat down for that year, researching, sitting, watching documentaries, learning the science and ingredients (as far as asking women from the SADC region about shea butter). Anything she could find to educate herself about skin, products, day and night, she consumed as much as she could. At this point, she’s not thinking about being an influencer or brand work. Only formalising her work and rebranding herself as the woman in skincare, in late 2019. “I just wanted to be the best and be the greatest, to have a product to offer, to find myself and what it is that I really wanted to do. So the more time I put into this, the more I realised that it could possibly be my calling, to educate, impact and empower others. I wanted to understand this thing so much that I could explain it to someone who knew nothing about skin care and can’t even afford the products we are privileged to afford”.

2. 3. 4.

How many times do you brush your teeth in a day? Do you still pick your nose? No, I pick my nails though

Favorite meal that reminds you of your childhood?

Cereal, I lived for a good morning cereal when I was still a child. It gives me a fresh crunch in the morning

“I want to be remembered for educating, empowering and impacting people’s journey’s in feeling beautiful and accepting the seasons of their skins, just like life.”

THE DYNAMIC

DUO BEHIND THEO NLENS SPORT FIELDS Sport photography is one of the most important careers in the sport Industry as the photos captured by photographers are used for various purposes including marketing, journalism and social media. What does it take for a person to be a sports photographer? On this month’s issue we interview multi award winning sports photographers Frennie and her husband Lefty Shivambu to find out about their sport photography journey. BY ZOTHANI KA GQIBIMPI SIMELANE 18

S P O R T | sibizimagazine.co.za

SM: FRENNIE SOME PEOPLE JUST KNOW YOU AS ONE OF THE FEW FEMALE SPORTS PHOTOGRAPHERS IN RSA BUT NOT MANY ARE AWARE THAT YOU ARE ACTUALLY MARRIED TO THE LEGENDARY LEFTY SHIVAMBU THE MULTI AWARD WINNING SPORT PHOTOGRAPHER. WHEN AND HOW DID YOU GUYS MEET? FS: I first met Lefty in 1996 when he was covering a local league football game between Nkowa Nkowa City and Dangerous Darkies at Nkowa Nkowa Stadium. We met again in 1997 and started dating until he paid lobola in 2006 and got married 2009. Being with Lefty developed my interest and passion for Photography because that was all he could speak about. I then started to travel around with him and in 2007 I started capturing images in Professional Sports. So yes Lefty is indeed a legendary sports photographer because for who I am and what I am capable of, Lefty takes ALL the credit.

Lefty Shivambu...the biggest fan of Tupac who named his two sons after Tupac Amaru Shakur...... Tupac Shivambu and Amaru Shaur Shivambu

SM: LEFTY IT IS CLEAR WHO INSPIRED YOUR WIFE. HOW ABOUT YOU? LS: Honestly, I can’t think of anything else either than poverty that inspired me to pursue a career in photography. I grew up very poor at Letaba Estates Orange Farm and I had to think out of the box and identify a career that would become my ticket out of that misery. I’m grateful to my late sister Jane Shivambu (may her soul RIP) who gave me a camera as a present and that was the beginning of my Photography career. SM: LEFTY, YOU DIDN’T ONLY INSPIRE FRENNIE TO PURSUE A CAREER IN SPORT PHOTOGRAPHY BUT ALSO SAM THESNIPER. LS: Sam The Sniper Shivambu is actually my younger brother and the manner in which he and my wife have grown in the field of photography gives me pleasure as I played a very crucial role in sharpening their photography skills that have seen them travel the world and exceling in their careers. I taught Sam everything about photography and groomed him to be the highly skilled and respected photographer that he is and I am so proud of him and also myself.

Frennie and Lionel Messi

SM: FRENNIE ANY ADVICE FOR ASPIRING FEMALE PHOTOGRAPHERS ESPECIALLY THOSE FROM REMOTE AREAS LIKE NKOWA NKOWA. FS: As women we need to believe in ourselves, be goal driven and show hunger in everything we do. We are capable of being the best photographers and can compete against anyone because in life, anything is possible only if you believe in yourself and God. I would like to see more women in sports photography and nowadays it is much easier as they can start by using their own smart phones to sharpen their photography skills until they become professional photographers.

Sam Shivambu...Lefty’s younger brother

S P O R T | sibizimagazine.co.za

SM: LEFTY, PEOPLE SAY YOU ARE ONE “OBSESSED” MAN ABOUT THE LATE AMERICAN RAPPER, TUPAC SHAKUR. WHAT’S THE STORY THERE WITH YOU AND THE GREAT MAN? I’m grateful to photography because a few years ago I went to Los Angeles to cover a Bafana Bafana game and being there made me connect with Tupac’s spirit. Tupac inspires and influences me in so many ways; through listening to his music, reading books about him and watching documentaries. Also, his character of being “true to yourself” influenced me to name my two sons Tupac and Amaru Shakur Shivambu.

SM: CAREER HIGHLIGHTS? FS: 2018 GSports Awards Photographer of The Year 2014 and 2021 SA Sports Awards Photographer of the Year Nominee Covering the El Classion in Spain and the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil

Tupac’s music also inspired both my sons to get into hip hop music, the eldest one goes by the name of Rawyaltee which is also the name of their own record label, Rawyaltee Recordsl. Rawyaltee’s music is available on SoundCloud and other digital platforms. I’m his biggest fan!

LS: 2016 SA Sports Awards Photographer of the Year 2005 PSL Photographer of the Year Meeting Nelson Mandela and Traveling the World through what I am passionate about SM: CANON OR NIKON LS AND FS: Definitely Nikon which we have been using for the past 15 years and counting and no brand comes close, Nikon is the best by far. SM: MESSI OR RONALDO FRENNIE: Messi whom I was privileged to have met twice here at FNB Stadium and in Spain. LEFTY: Ronaldo. I love how he celebrates his goals and I wish I can photograph that moment one day. SM

ADDRESSI YOUTH UNEMPLOYMENT Nozuko Mzamo, Social Investment Specialist at Tshikululu Social Investments unpacks how investing in the employability of young people remains a powerful lever for creating pathways into the economy and should be viewed as critical to ESG agendas.

A

n estimated 1.8 billion youth worldwide will not have the skills or qualifications required to participate in the workforce by 2030. As the workplace changes due to the Fourth Industrial Revolution – especially with the rise of automation and artificial intelligence – there will need to be a shift in how young people are equipped with the necessary skills and know-how. In the 2018 Global Business Coalition for Education’s report on Preparing tomorrow’s workforce for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, it was estimated that across the globe, 260 million children were out of school and more than 800 million youth were not on track to learn the basic skills needed to enter the workforce by 2030. The disruption of Covid-19 has accelerated change and further exacerbated the existing inequalities that young people face, making the attainment of 22

Sustainable Development Goal 4, “Ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting life-long learning opportunities for all” ever more elusive. In addition, the World Bank predicts that the current global cohort of today’s youth generation, as a result of COVID-19 pandemic, are at risk of losing USD17-trillion in future earnings. If young people do not develop vastly different skillsets from previous generations, they will face a growingly uncertain future. Undoubtedly, one of the major challenges in South Africa’s development, and the African continent – a continent with a population of approximately 65% young people – is youth unemployment. Alarmingly, The African Development Bank has estimated that 50% of the youth in Africa will be unemployed and economically inactive by 2025. According to the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), 8.8 million people in South Africa aged 15-34 are youth Not in Education, Employment or Training (NEET). Approximately 5 million are inactive (not looking for work) and 3.8 million are unemployed (actively seeking employment and available to work). 52% of the 8.8 million people who are youth NEET are female. By the end of the first quarter in 2022, 46% of people between 15 and 34 years of age remained outside of employment, education and training. The Higher Education system is faced with challenges ranging from high attrition rates at universities; outdated curricula; low throughput rates in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions; as well as wide variation in quality and control within the Sector Education and Training Authorities. The Higher Education system is faced with challenges ranging from high attrition rates at universities; outdated curricula; low throughput rates in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions; as well as wide variation in quality and control within the Sector Education and Training Authorities. Additionally, the vocational system suffers from insufficient relationships with business and industry, leaving vocational training institutes ill-equipped to meet employers’ skill requirements and young people largely

either underexposed or not exposed at all to quality career guidance and work readiness training that would allow them to transition into the world of work. While concerns about the quality of vocational systems abound globally, in South Africa in particular, the nature of vocational system quality makes addressing critical issues exceedingly challenging. Given this complex context, what are the opportunities for social investors to create meaningful pathways for young people? Tshikululu recently conducted a large-scale impact evaluation of a youth employment programme that aimed to empower youth with work-readiness skills and places them in various job opportunities in demandled industries/sectors. The programme ran from 2018 to 2020, with a total investment of R264 700 756. The evaluation specifically sought to measure the effects of the employability programme and ascertain its social return on investment (SROI). The research employed a counterfactual study design that used survey data and qualitative insights from various stakeholders. A total of 805 respondents (average age 27 years) were surveyed – 499 direct beneficiaries of the programme as well as a control group of 309 young people that did not participate in the programme. The overall effectiveness rate of the employability programme in facilitating young people’s access to the world of work was 78% (comparing favorably with similar youth employability programmes that reported an effectiveness rate of 86%). Most importantly, the evaluation revealed that youth participating in the employability programme are 1.5 times more likely to be placed into jobs. An assessment of the programme’s SROI revealed that for every R1 invested in the programme there was a social return on investment of R8.82. Notwithstanding, the complex challenges in the higher education system and the overall labour market in South Africa, the research confirms that employability programmes are a meaningful avenue for creating pathways into the economy for young people. The September 2022 Global Business Coalition for Education report exploring the materiality of education, highlights the imperative for businesses to invest in skills and education for the youth in order to equip them for the new world of work and help drive economic growth. If education challenges are left unaddressed, companies will struggle with developing and retaining the workforce pipeline. This directly threatens the opportunities available for businesses to enter new markets and expand in order to ensure sustainable supply chains are built and maintained. Tangible education, development, and training positively drives diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) and human capital management (HCM) metrics. Investing specifically in youth employability could allow companies to meaningfully tackle the ‘S’ in their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) agendas whilst contributing to building a more resilient, inclusive and sustainable society. BURNING ITS WAY THROUGH COVID Standard Bank Enterprise Development’s Basali Development Programme, in partnership with Giving Wings, equipped 115 women entrepreneurs to build resilient post-pandemic businesses. We sat with one of the participants, Mmule Matlala, who allowed us to bite off and chew on her personal experience and tell us more about her business. BY KELEBOGILE MATSEPE

This month we talk to Mmule Matlala, a 37-year-old woman, born in the village of Madidi and later relocated to Ga-Rankuwa, north- west of Pretoria in the Gauteng Province. She is a wife, daughter and a mom of 2. She is also passionate about food, farming, poverty eradication, women and youth empowerment. She tells us about her business in food, where she provides catering services across various industries and manufactures agro-processed products. Their signature product being a hot chilli relish, and it’s only fair that we dig in and get a taste of her world.

BRIEFLY ABOUT THE BUSINESS The name of the business is ZDF Matlala Holdings Pty Ltd. The acronym ZDF means Zoë Divine Fountain which represents the source from which something is supplied. In our case, it is the delightful culinary experience we give our clients through our food and condiments. The business was formally registered to trade in 2017 after I resigned from my career as a Civil Engineering Technologist in 2016 to pursue my passion of cooking and dream of owning my business. We have a dedicated- team responsible for the operations of the business, where we:

• Prepare meals on daily basis for employees of various corporate institutions.

• Provide catering services for any type of event.

• Sell our products and services through various social media platforms.

CHALLENGES Having to prove myself that I am as capable as my male counterparts in both culinary and agro-processing industry has been a challenge I’ve had to face

MOMENTS OF PRIDE A highlight I’m proud of, is being part of the Standard bank Basali development Programme. A programme tailor made for black women in business. Through the programme we received immense information of which upon application we had an increase in our annual turnover, access to market and funding.

SKILLS NEEDED IN YOUR INDUSTRY Culinary, management, financial, communication and Marketing skills.

WHAT MAKES THESE PRODUCTS SPECIAL? Our signature product is a hot chilli relish, created to enhance any meal without a compromise on nutrition. It is a multipurpose product which can also be used as; a marinade for any type of meat, dip for snacks, spread for sandwiches and a cook-in sauce for stews. What makes the relish special is that, not only is it tasty, it also has immense health benefits. With 12g of carbohydrates, 0g fat, 3g of sugar, 0.34g of Sodium per 100g serving. This is by far one of the healthiest products that you can consume guilt free. With our catering services what makes our service and food special is that we develop customised and concept based solutions for our clients, in order to meet their catering needs. Our offerings include platters, do it yourself meal kits, buffets, on the go meals, healthy snacks and takeaways.

FUTURE PLANS My future plans are to expand our product line. We are currently working on a new healthy range with the aim of bringing healthy eating back into fashion, in a cost effective way. I also aspire to establish a food outlet and a factory where I will be able to increase our production capacity but also to generate employment opportunities within my community.

WHAT YOU SHOULD TAKE HOME Procrastination is a thief of time, do not wait until the conditions are perfect to start. Start where you are with the little that you have and everything will fall into place along the way. SM

10 DAYS WITH The

TLC 20R 5G Smartphone: A Review

HERE’S WHAT I LIKED AND WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE ABOUT THE PHONE. AND A VERDICT OF WHETHER TO OR NOT TO GET IT AS YOUR NEXT GADGET.

BY

F

ZINHLEZONKE ZIKALALA

or me, looks matter, unfortunately. So, you can imagine how many times I’ve been disappointed because, sometimes ‘looks are deceiving’ luckily when I reviewed the TLC 20R 5G phone I was excited because the phone looks good and works just as good. But I have more details.

LOOK AND FEEL I can safely say, looks are not deceiving with this phone. Its performance is as good as it looks. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t too sure about the name TLC. It just was not giving me ‘hot gadget to have’ vibes and if I’m being frank, I’m still not a fan. But that’s the least important thing about this phone. When I first laid my eyes on it, I was pleasantly surprised because I wasn’t expecting something so clean and sleek. The screen is big enough for my half blind eyes and very crisp. It

26

comes with a clear pouch to pop it into leaving space for the finger print sensor and the 3-lens camera a flash at the back. In one word, it looks expensive, which is nice because it’s actually affordable. A win.

happening in the world right now, I think camera quality should be one of the top priorities in all phones, however for the price of the phone, the pictures are really nice, especially with good lighting.

FUNCTIONALITY

THE VERDICT

One of the things I always consider when I buy a phone is it’s battery life – I’m a busy girl and my job is in the digital space, so my phone is of the things I use and need the most to help me function. So a good battery life is a MUST…which is another thing I loved about this phone. The fact that I could go through the whole day without charging was my favourite thing. Besides that though, it comes with almost all the leg work of downloading popular apps that we all use downloaded already, like whatsapp, Netflix, shein clothing, bookings.com and the works.

The phone is affordable and ticks most boxes on what a good phone should have. So if you’re on a tight budget and are looking for something worth your money, I’d recommend this for you.

I’m a podcast and music girl too, so a phone with a clear sound is a win for me, and I won with this one too. The security is tight too, you can either unlock it with your fingerprint or a 4 digit password of your choice to keep your content private. The camera was okay, I like that you could play around with the pictures and edit them to your satisfaction, though I was not blown away. With all the content creation

The Braai Master When you’re given the responsibility to man the meat on family gatherings, just know that you are the chosen one. You’re just as important as the person who is given the keys to the ‘cold room’ when there are family gatherings. So, to ensure you do a stellar job on the braai stand, here are the top 6 essential braai accessories that you should own as the chosen one. BY ZINHLEZONKE ZIKALALA

HANDMADE DAMASCUS STEEL CARVING SET – R1995 @SAKNIVES

These will come in very handy for keeping hold of large, slippery, pieces of meat, such as racks of ribs and it could get a good grip of a pork shoulder with one hand while I pulled the shreds away with the other.

A meat thermometer is a handy kitchen tool that can help you cook your chicken breasts, pork chops, and fish filets to the right temperatures every time. No mistakes when you have this tool on board.

Simply for making cuts to different pieces easily and quickly. Carving knife like these knives are usually accompanied by a good carving fork and their main function is to make excellent and uniform cuts of meat. It makes precise slices quickly to make the job easier when braaiing.

RECHARGABLE FIRE LIGHTER – R299 @WOOLWORTHS Knowing how to build the perfect fire is the most important part of a successful braai. But most importantly, you need to make the fire somehow, and for that you need this tool.

ARROW LEATHER GOODS CANVAS & LEATHER APRON – R989 @YUPPIECHEF Braaiing is a messy job, so an apron is necessary for obvious reasons. But an apron that has spacious front pockets is even better to keep all your braai equipment, such as flashlights, spatulas, spices, beers and others, within easy reach.

ROBERT WELCH RADFORD SERVING TONGS – R399 @HOME This is arguably the most widely used and versatile type, utility tongs are suitable for flipping or turning foods during cooking, removing cooked foods from boiling water and handling hot foods from the oven or grill. You need it

We spent two nights at the luxurious Premier Resort, The Moorings in Knysna and we wished it could have been more.

Dining at The Moorings:

a great base from which to explore the Garden Route is Premier Resort The Moorings in Knysna set on the banks of the Knysna lagoon, amidst enchanting woodland gardens, offering private access to the lagoon for hotel guests, as well as boat launch and docking facilities at the hotel. The area is serene in its secluded Knysna Heads setting, with spectacular views of indigenous forest and less than 3km from the town’s centre. This place is amazing, but what makes it even better is the staff that was so friendly and helpful during our stay. This beautiful establishment consists of a man-made beach area with a rim flow pool overlooking the Knysna Estuary and a wide variety of rooms on offer all with a private balcony or patio giving estuary and indigenous forest views. This place is perfect for relaxing in the utmost comfort, we stayed at our very own two bedroom waterfront villa which is ideal for family stays or even for a group of friends. I loved that the resort offers the perfect self-catering escape as all suites have their own kitchens for self-catering purposes as well as direct access to the lagoon via our private waterway with docking and mooring facilities. To take away the hassle of cooking our own food while on this much needed break, there are also two onsite restaurants that we got to choose from. Here are some of our highlights from our weekend getaway:

The Suite: Our rooms on the Villa were spacious and elegant with views to die for. It had a comfy king-size bed and everything we needed. We were unfortunately not connected to Wi-Fi (sob sob) throughout our stay, (It’s not all Villa’s that don’t have wifi though). Otherwise everything was just too perfect. It felt like we were home, but with a bit more

The restaurant, Tuscano Ristiante, situated at the gardens, serves Italian Mediterranean cuisine. The restaurant boasts a wood-fired oven and fireplace, the perfect spot to wind down after a long day exploring the town. Loved the food, though I think they have quite a limited wine and drinks menu. Then there was my absolute favourite, the Salmon Restaurant and Bar, on the ground floor with direct access to the outdoor pool patio. I loved the offering on this poolside menu - refreshing juices, smoothies, cocktails and nutritious snacks.

Things To Do: Since this was our first time here, we wanted to explore and see what Knysna had to offer us and it had a few things up it’s sleeve. We got to satisfy our taste buds with the local foods and craft beer at various restaurants and markets at the Waterfront harbour. We also took a short left to the Elephant Park to feed and snap with the animalis. Though we didnt do alot of outdoor leisure activities, there are options such as fishing, golfing, swimming, boating, mountain biking and bird watching are available at the hotel and in the surrounding area.

What I’m Coming Back For: I’m bringing my family back here, especially my niece whom I think will absolutely love the ‘Premier Kids Club’ at The Moorings. The club is all about “Just having fun!” They encourage the kids to participate in as many activities as possible while staying there. All the activities looked exciting and fun, I also love that the kids get to make new friends and try new activities that you have never done before. Thingo, my niece would definitely love this – so yup, I’m making that booking soon. SM

HOW TO

summer

live in your favourite series this

Having a summer itinerary is extremely important, that’s if you really want to have uncharted fun. It’s imperative to take time off for yourself, try out new things, meet new people, make new friends and memories. BY B O I T U M E LO L E T LO E N YA N E

S

UMMER has always been about new adventures and places, getting down and dirty just enough to still look hot while at it, doing things on your bucket list, traveling and living vicariously through your alter ego or your friends is just the tip of the iceberg. Having a budget is and will always be advisable, however, some people take the no coins route by dedicating their time to reading books and traveling by imagination, we want to bring a twist to that, if you are in intense entertainment lover then this will be a perfect adventure for you: We want to challenge you to choose a character you love from a series and be them, on the right budget in order to enjoy every move and bit of summer.

Step one:

Make a list of all the series’ you love, try putting them in categories, (romance, thriller, drama etc.) this will immediately set the mood for what you want to achieve in the days you choose to be in character.

Step two:

Step three

Try to recreate the moments you like, by finding restaurants or even places that either look slightly the same as the ones you see on your screen or that may give off the same feeling or energy you get when watching that show. Let’s take Emily in Paris for example, there are restaurants that have an italic environment to them in Johannesburg, preferably Monte Casino, that could be the place for you. The wine farm scenes are also just right, wineries such as Bellevue Wine Estate in the Western Cape and for those in Gauteng? Indaba Tasting Room in Fourways will work wonders for you.

Outfits, having an outfit that may match your favourite character’s look might just be the one thing that may put you in your favourite characters shoes, flat or high you’ll be stepping right in their position. Choosing to recreate their makeup looks, wearing the same lipstick colour will brighten the mood and get you ready to step out and show out.

Top of that list is the controversial Mercedes Benz V300d affectionately known as the “F#@$&n car”. It is an amazing and well-appointed piece of kit, ready to tackle those majestic winding roads with style and grace. It never pioneered this segment, but has seriously proven itself over time, to be the benchmark of this class. The V300 is powered by 2.0Litre turbocharged 4-cylinder power unit, with 176kw and 500nm of torque, which makes it the most powerful in this class. Its impressive features include a Burmeister audio system, dual zone climate-controlled

This Caravelle started the whole trend of well-equipped and funky MPVs. Ordinary South Africans can relate to this car, whether you grew up with one at home, or some of your fondest memories, where captured in one. It’s all about the build quality and German engineering. The Caravelle gets a digital drivers display and a centre touch infotainment screen, with Apple CarPlay and Android auto standard with blind spot monitoring.

Bathed in a combination of leather and Alcantara the well-appointed cabin oozes quality and opulence. There is a tray and fridge combo for the rear passengers, which makes life easy on the road. The electrically adjustable sliding doors are also part of the package in a Caravelle. Power in the Caravelle comes from a 2.0litre Bi-turbodiesel power unit, producing 146kw, with 450nm of torque, this is mated to the 7-speed DSG transmission. The Caravelle is the only car here that gets 4motion four-wheel drive as standard. Pricing starts @R1 166 600

air-conditioning, 360-degree multiview camera, mated to its MBUX infotainment touchscreen and the blind spot monitoring comes standard in the V300 Mercedes. At the rear you get full leather reclining individual chairs that swivel 360 degrees. The beverage refrigerator and adjustable table are standard fare. The sliding doors for the rear passengers are electrically powered and convenient for your occupants. The latest Kia with its predecessor the “Grand Sedona”, have always appealed to me from the styling alone, and they have always been good looking vehicles. Good value for money aside, the Carnival has always been a well spec’d and fully loaded with safety and technology to boot. Upfront we get dual touchscreens, a digital drivers display and the infotainment touchscreen system, with Apple CarPlay and Android auto, with a dual zone, climate controlled aircon. The Carnival is powered by the 2,2Litre, 4-cylinder turbodiesel unit, with 148kw of power, and 440nm of torque mated to an 8-speed transmission. Pricing for the Carnival starts @ R803 995 which equates to excellent value for money.

It has the looks, the tech, and the features to boot. Affectionately known as the “Router” eKasi.

The Quantum is the silent sleeper and people were surprised that a manufacturer like Toyota could produce such a luxurious people carrier.

Its looks divide opinions, some people love the looks and some loath the looks.

With an imposing grille upfront, and the L-shaped LED rear lights, complimented by polished 17”inch alloys, the Quantum VX is bold in this trim.

It looks like it came from the future, with its slim LED light bar upfront. I had the privilege of experiencing this Staria on an extended two day road trip, from PE (Gqeberha) to Johannesburg, with an overnight stay in Mangaung (Bloemfontein). One of the best times of my life, road trips are truly my favorites. With six guys onboard everyone was well catered for in the Staria, with reclining leather seats for all three rows, and USB connectivity to make sure we never ran out of juice.

Get inside and it’s where you’ll be pleasantly surprised, with opulent and luxurious leather chairs, mimicking a private jet. The driver cockpit is very modest though with a tiny 4.2”inch infotainment display, complemented by an optitron driver’s display. There are electrically operated side mirrors, with blindspot monitoring, and rain sensing wipers.

Upfront is a digital instrument cluster for the driver, and an infotainment touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android auto, which kept us well entertained in our two-day journey, and on those long stretches of tarmac. The aircon with the dual zone function was decent.

You also get a multi-function steering wheel, with an electrically adjustable driver seat. Powering the Quantum VX is the same 2,8 GD-6 doing duty in the indestructible Hilux, but the power unit is slightly detuned in the Quantum VX.

The Staria was a serious performer on the road, keeping up with traffic easy, and very comfortable. It is powered by a 2,2 litre 4-cylinder diesel motor good for a modest 130kw, with 430nm of torque, mated to an 8-speed auto transmission. Pricing for the Staria starts from R1 137 900.

Making a modest 115kw of power, but complimented by a stump pulling 420nm of torque, mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. The Quantum VX has a base price of R1 089 600.

Any of these well-appointed and luxurious MPV’s will do an excellent job ferrying you and your loved ones in extreme comfort and opulence, it’s a tough one to call.

I KNOW I WOULD BE HAPPY IN ANY OF THESE. SM

We Love Hearing From You Winning Letter

Sibizi Magazine is a Gift that keeps On Giving

I’m a new follower of the magazine, I was only acquainted to it when it hosted it’s 2nd year launch last month in Johannesburg. Let just talk about the FOMO I had just by watching it on the live. I thank God I stumbled upon it on Instagram that because I’ve been in-love with the publication since that day.

Being a newbie meant I had to go back and read all the past magazine from issue one till the very last one that stars Sabelo and all I can say is BRAVO. The growth is visible and it’s beautiful to witness – I even went as far as googling Zinhlezonke, the editor and a found that she’s a media giant waiting to happen, I’m so inspired by her and can only wish her and the magazine well.

From a reader’s point of view, thank you for being the gift that keeps giving. I love the content I find it useful and very relevant. My favourite article was from a 2021 issue that shows us how to write a CV and another one that guides us on saving money. Those are just the 2 that I took screen shots of, but there are so many that I loved and related to. I hope you guys just keep giving. Loved and Appreciated by Jabu

If you’re keen to rejuvenate your body this winter, it’s time to start taking the phrase “beautiful from the inside out” literally. Herbalife gives us 6 easy ways to rejuvenate your body from the inside out this season.

For most of us, winter is the season that brings with it chapped lips, brittle nails, dry and itchy skin, and hair that looks lifeless and damaged. The cold air takes its toll and requires a different approach to caring for our bodies than the one used during the warmer summer months. But looking and feeling good isn’t just about what you apply to the outside to manage those tell-tale signs of winter woes – it starts from the inside, with what you put in your body.

Drink more water

You’re probably tired of hearing that hydration is critical, but drinking more water is the fastest, most effective way to help your skin regenerate cells and moisturise itself from the inside out. Water increases the production of new blood and muscle cells and purges toxins from your bloodstream, which helps keep your skin clear. It also balances your lymph system, allowing you to perform daily functions such as fighting infections. Go ahead and add a few lemon or orange slices to your water for a vitamin C boost.

Reduce sugar and processed foods intake

Eat foods high in prebiotics

In case you missed it, gut health is huge. So, while you’re busy with your shopping list, don’t forget to add foods high in prebiotics. Think along the lines of apples, bananas, barley, chia seeds, garlic, oats, lentils, flax seeds, and leeks and onions.

Prebiotics are a form of non-digestible dietary fibre that serves as a food source for the healthy bacteria in your gut, delivering benefits to the ecosystem that resides in our small and large intestines. If you’re worried about getting enough prebiotics, look for a high-quality supplement.

@khaye_za Growing up being not well informed about skin care

made me want to learn more about it and work toward improving and taking care of my skin the organic way. Skin wellness is important to me it gives me confidence and you never go wrong with it . I believe the @bebright.co.za products will help me take my skin from glow to blossoming.

@ sam_queeneth Learning about wellness and taking care of

yourself by choosing to eat the right food is what I enjoyed the most about this issue. As someone who struggles with working out, I’ve decided to start eating healthy and has been going well winning this hamper will assist me in maintaining this new lifestyle. Also those mornings stretch exercises😍 thank you.

@thandazani23_zulu I’m so big on wellness and I’ve learnt to

put my health first. The tips shared on this issue contributed so much to the way I think. Different stories taught me something. Things like avoiding procrastination from a 21 year old entrepreneur, “I’m not perfect and that’s okay” from Doctor Zondo. Learning a few stretches, and recipeeees! There’s quite a lot and I’m glad I came across Be bright products! Hoping to taste them soon and incorporate them on my daily plant based meals & organic products on my skin 🥰 Ohh andddd “getting healthy skin from our cupboard”?? Y’all really plugged us 🔥🤩

@Shongani Makasyamthanda Mbatha I liked reading the Herbals life’s tips on taking care of your body. Also keeping your skin hydrated in winter. Bonus: visiting Mpumalanga. I had no idea Mpumalanga has such beautiful places

LUXURY AND TRADITION

In case you missed it, gut health is huge. So, while you’re Exercise reduces inflammation in the body and can help your body’s systems - including its detoxification system function effectively. If you want to, signing up at the gym or downloading the latest HIIT app is a good step, but you can also keep it simple. Walking is an easy way to get in shape and increase your body’s circulation.

Self-care is important in any season, but it’s even more critical in winter when we may be feeling low about the weather. Begin with something small, like treating yourself to a bath soak that incorporates pure Epsom salts, a gentle body scrub that removes dry, dead skin, applying deepconditioning hair treatments, using cuticle oil at least once per day, and setting aside 20 minutes every now and then for a skin-clarifying face mask. Don’t feel pressured to do all of these things at once. Your new rejuvenating routine could start with drinking more water, then progress to integrating more fresh produce into your diet and introducing moderate-intensity exercise. That way, it’ll be easier to stick to, and before you know it, this holistic approach to keeping your body in tip-top shape will be second nature all year long.
