4 | WiYNN.com Events ARE YOU READY TO PUT ON YOUR BOOTS and kick up some dust? Get out your festival attire because the Dirty Boots Country Fest is coming to Washington County on April 15th! This family-friendly event has quickly grown into the biggest country music party in the region, with hot country acts, regional food, beer, wine and spirits, games, kids’ activities, and shopping. Inspired by her lifelong love of country music and line dancing, three years ago Amber Burdick urged WiYNN to consider starting a country festival. This year, as event director, she plans to give festivalgoers plenty of opportunity to share that passion. Amber says she grew up listening to country music, and shares that connection with her husband, Scott, who grew up in Texas. As they fell in love, the two attended concerts and danced together but had to travel outside of the area to do so. “I just felt we had to do a country festival,” Amber says. “I want people to feel right at home in a place that’s laid back where they can have a good time and learn something new. I want to get everyone up and dancing.” That’s exactly what you’ll want to do at this year’s event. Gates open at noon to festival grounds filled with food, drinks, and games. Pop a tent (limited prepaid spaces are available), bring some chairs, and plan to party the day away with activities like mechanical bull riding, chicken poop bingo, corn hole and more. Shop South Bound Western Wear and other vendors for clothing, boots, buckles, and hats. The location of this year’s event was not 100% when this article went to print. It will be held in Washington County along the 81 Corridor between Washington County/Franklin County State Line and Washington County/ SCHEDULE DIRTY BOOTS COUNTRY FEST Presented by The Granite Guys Saturday, April 15, 2023 NOON–8:00 PM Visit DIRTYBOOTSCOUNTRYFEST.com for more up to date information Music Schedule 12:30-2:00 PM | Bobby D. and The Truck Stop Burritos 2:30-4:30 PM | Nathan Bartgis Band 4:30-6:00 PM | Dean Crawford and the Dunn’s River Band 6:30-8:00 PM | Davisson Brothers Band Get Down at the Dirty Boots Country Fest Come for the music, stay for the fun. by Kate Rader Photos by Mark Youngblood

8 | WiYNN.com Enhancing The Heart Of The Home Spice up your kitchen with some advice from area remodelers. by Kate Rader our home’s central hub, including layout, accessibility, cabinet and countertop materials, appliances, fixtures and finishes, flooring, lighting, and color. Today, more than ever before, there are many ways to make your kitchen more functional — and more beautiful.  THE STUFF KITCHEN DREAMS ARE MADE OF In 2016, when Robert Helmick and his wife Jorgina Andrawos moved into their Black Rock home, they wanted to make it their own. The couple knew that remodeling the kitchen was at the top of their list. Robert — who was a chef for years before working in IT — says they love entertaining Jorgina’s big family. His only request? “I wanted a Wolf stove,” he says. “Jorgina designed everything else.” Jorgina brought her design vision to Hagerstown-based The Granite Guys, who’ve specialized in granite and natural stone sourcing, design, and installation for 18 years. Owners Tom Simon and Herbie Bennett have devoted their careers to cultivating a deep knowledge of the products and processes behind the countertops, backsplashes, fireplaces, and bathrooms they create.  They recommend a client start by bringing their ideas into the showroom to discuss options. Tom says they “like to educate our customers about what they’re getting, and how to take care of it. In the showroom, people can see and feel the difference between materials AS THE SAYING GOES, HOME IS WHERE THE heart is, and the kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s most often located at the center of the house, both physically and emotionally. It’s where we congregate to bond over a meal with family, learn to cook, and many times, its design sets the tone for the rest of the house.  There are many things to consider when it’s time to design (or redesign) Top Left: Robert and Jorgina chose beautiful black granite with white and gold accents for the countertops and backsplash of their kitchen. Photo by Social Connection Marketing. Bottom Left to Right: Kelli Nunnaly of J & D Kitchens emphasizes how even a small change in a kitchen’s layout can provide big results. Improved use of space is evident in these before and after photos of a beautiful renovation

SPRING 2023 | 9 and we can make recommendations based on their lifestyle.” The couple chose a striking black granite for its “durability and aesthetic. It has a feeling unlike anything else,” Robert says. The Granite Guys added about nine slabs to Jorgina and Roberts’ home — installing kitchen countertops, a full-length backsplash, and a 10 ft. x 50 in. eat-in island; along with a floor-to-ceiling granite fireplace and additional countertops in the basement.  Each slab weighed about half a ton and took six people to carry in by hand. Much of the granite used in the couple’s house was imported from Brazil, with white or gold veining running through each hand-cut slab. Herbie says the biggest challenge they faced was getting the varied veins to match up.  Jorgina and Robert spent several years renovating their home. Just as the project neared completion, an electrical fire tore through the living room, causing extensive smoke and water damage to the first floor. So Tom and Herbie did what they do best — assist their customers. They pulled all of the home’s granite, extensively cleaned it, and reinstalled the countertops and backsplash once the new cabinets were in place. They later added the fireplace, which is now one of the home’s focal points.  While The Granite Guys believe in granite’s durability and ease of care, they’ve seen an uptick in clients’ interest in other natural stone, like Carrara marble, solid-surface quartz, and quartzite which is naturally occurring and has a shiny appearance. Typically, customers turn to these products when they’re looking for lighter-colored countertops without the veining, Herbie says, and notes that each type of material has pluses and minuses. For example, “quartz comes in solid colors and is less shiny than quartzite or granite, but it can be scorched by a hot pot or scratched more easily, whereas scratches in granite can be polished right out.” Gaye McGovern Ins Agcy Inc Gaye McGovern, Agent 11373 Robinwood Dr Hagerstown, MD 21742 Bus: 301-790-1462 www.gayemcgovern.com Life insurance can be life-changing Life won’t always go as planned. SPRING 2023 | 11 “People worry about cleaning granite, but it’s pretty easy,” Tom says. He recommends only cleaning it with granite wipes or granite cleaner, and that you can get one with a sealer in it for everyday use. They both say that the most important thing you can do when considering a new build or renovation is to “Do your homework. Research materials, ask questions, and ask your family and friends for recommendations.” FRESHEN UP Kelli Nunnaly has been a kitchen design professional for 30 years. She shares her deep product and design knowledge with customers of J&D Kitchen Distributors in Hagerstown, MD, helping them understand how they can get the most out of their space. “Layout is always based on the homeowner’s priorities,” Kelli says. “Do they want the kitchen to be open to other areas of the house? Are there multiple people cooking and they want to share their time in the kitchen together?”  She says storage is important and there are lots of new storage solutions available. Hidden trash cans for trash and recycling, pull-out drawers and cabinets for pots and pans and spices, and rollouts in the pantry for easy access are all popular.  She’s also noticed that while white and grey kitchens are still trending, people are starting to embrace color. Warmer tones are out, while lighter wood tones are trending again — with a twist: cooler shades. “Lightly stained wood tones paired with shades of green are very popular. Dark emerald green or sage mixed with a light wood tone is very pretty.” Homeowners are choosing to go with creamier whites paired with accent colors. She’s seeing more two-toned cabinets, where the bottom cabinets are a different color than the top ones. “I recently designed a kitchen for a log cabin where they wanted a black island and base cabinets and the upper cabinets were a beautiful hickory wood,” she says.  Kelli says changing just a few things can make a big impact, too. “If you have golden oak cabinets with a gold countertop, we can change out the countertop to a white with a little gold veining, and add a backsplash; change out the cabinet hardware to give it a fresh look.” Before the project begins, she enjoys creating a full-color mockup to help customers envision the finished Renovations mean out with the old and in with the new. The Habitat for Humanity of Franklin County ReStore provides a place to donate gently used (or unused) building supplies, furniture, and appliances — and a way to purchase these items for your own remodel.  “Customers can see a 30-90% savings on items purchased at our store,” Assistant Manager Justin Hoke says. Profits from sales at the store subsidize homes built by Habitat for Humanity so more Franklin County residents can become proud homeowners.  Habitat acquires the land and building materials, but future residents participate in the labor required to build the home. “If someone donates a sofa, they very well are paying for a door in a house.” Justin believes wholeheartedly in the mission of the organization and how it helps the community. “I’ve seen close to 20 houses built in the eight years I’ve been here.” HELPING HOMEOWNERS Habitat for Humanity ReStores save consumers money and materials from the landfill. Dark paint colors matched with stained wood is trending, like in this kitchen designed by J& D Kitchen Distributors. Kacie Meyers, co-owner of Chambersburg Kitchens & Countertops, suggests trying a pop of color to spice up your white kitchen like on this island.

12 | WiYNN.com design. “Every customer is different.” CREATIVE CONSIDERATIONS Kacie Meyers, co-owner of Chambersburg Kitchens and Countertops & The Floor Trader In Chambersburg, PA, says she thinks time spent at home during Covid sparked the renewed interest in color. “People were home and noticing how hard all-white kitchens were to clean,” she says. “There’s also been a big focus on bringing the inside outdoors, resulting in earthy tones like green and dark blue with pops of color, and outdoor kitchens.” Kitchens are becoming more inviting, with features like ambiance and floor lighting and conveniences like USB charging outlets. Kacie says improved accessibility is paramount, and they work with homeowners to implement a “Living in Place” philosophy, which advocates for safety and accessibility, allowing them to age in their homes comfortably.  Since 1997, the company has specialized in flooring, kitchen and bathroom designs, cabinets, and countertops for new construction & renovations. When meeting with potential clients for the first time, Kacie says it helps to bring photos of the room and general measurements. That way, they can look at products together and discuss what does and doesn’t work for them. “We get a preliminary sense of the budget and make adjustments to fit. There are always ways to save. Something like door style alone can affect the price a lot.” People looking for that more organic look, she notes, are switching from tile to luxury vinyl floorings like Karndean, which can look like tile with grout or marble, have a wood look, and offers different shapes. “It’s easier to clean, stand on, and replace if there’s damage,” she says. The projects she enjoys the most require creativity to update a challenging space. Recently, a client Servicing your Local Area! Local parks provide an abundance of great activities, no matter the time of year. Here’s the inside scoop on the most popular parks in our area, so get out there and enjoy! HAGERSTOWN’S HISTORIC JEWEL The first designated park in Hagerstown, MD, City Park opened in 1915. Featuring a lovely collection of man-made lakes, wooded walking trails, picnic facilities, and active recreation facilities, City Park welcomes 100,000 visitors annually to enjoy its natural beauty and peacefulness. Home to a large variety of waterfowl, the Park’s white swans are local celebrities in their own right, drawing both children and adults to watch their graceful dance across the tree-lined lake. Historic City Park is home to the Jonathan Hager House & Museum, the original homestead of the City’s founder, Jonathan Hager. The park is also home to The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts, one of the finest small museums in the nation, and the Mansion House Art Gallery, a Georgian-style mansion house built by John Heyser in 1846, which serves as the headquarters for the Valley Art Association. Visitors can also enjoy summer concerts at the Peter Buys Band Shell by the lake, dedicated in 1960 to the conductor of the Municipal Band, or visit the newly-built Vietnam War Veterans Monument. A railroad museum features items from the Western Maryland Railroad Company, and visitors can explore Steam Engine 202, built in 1912 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works and retired in 1953, which carried passengers and baggage between Baltimore and Hagerstown. Annually, City Park hosts the Hagerstown Municipal Band, Gospel, and modern concerts, Christmas tree lighting, Fall Fest, and picnics in its five pavilions. A recent addition is the Christmas light show with music on the lake and surrounding area. Parks manager for the City of Hagerstown, Mark Haddock finds that people enjoy “the peacefulness of the swans, ducks, and geese on the lake, the natural rock formations, trees, shoreline and other untouched natural features throughout the park—along with the playgrounds, pavilions, sitting areas and Art and cultural attractions.”With so much to see and do, Haddock is sure that “everyone that visits City Park will create their own favorite memories and stories City Park 501 Virginia Avenue, Hagerstown, MD https://www.hagerstownmd.org/308/ City-Park Baker Park, Frederick, MD FUN FACT: CITY PARK LAKE IS FED BY SEVEN SPRINGS AND WAS CONSTRUCTED BY MODIFYING NATURAL FEATURES.

Superintendent of Recreation Julie Redding estimates that over 200,000 people visit the park each year. The wide variety of community events — like outdoor concerts at the band shell and the annual Independence Day celebration with fireworks, food trucks, and fun — complement the Recreation Department’s camps and activities, soccer leagues, and the seasonal draw of the Aquatic Center. Chambersburg Memorial Park is all about staying active! The 38-acre park features two playgrounds for children 2–12 years of age, with recently-installed fully- inclusive components, the WeGo Swing and the We-Go Round. The colorful rides are fun for individuals of all abilities but are especially beneficial for those with a wheelchair, who can roll up and lock on with their wheels to enjoy its benefits. 18 | WiYNN.com apart, touching various neighborhoods in Frederick. Named for Frederick businessman Joseph D. Baker and opened in 1927 during segregation, Baker Park was built as a whites-only park and remained that way until it was desegregated during the Civil Rights era. (Mullinix Park, located nearby on two rocky, sloping acres across Carroll Creek served Frederick’s Black community.) Now, the park plays a part in a major flood control system that protects historic Downtown Frederick, utilizing a beautifully built system of waterfalls and tunnels to funnel water underneath the streets. The park itself is home to the Joseph D. Baker Bell Tower and Carillon, a 70-foot-tall structure constructed in 1941 of Baltimore County granite. Its initial 14 bells were manufactured in Holland, each bell bearing the inscription “The Joseph Dill Baker Memorial.” These original bells are stationary; only the clappers — weighing 15,000 pounds — move. Nine new bells were purchased in 1966; restoration of the bell tower in 1995 included an addition of 25 bells, bringing the total to 58. Asked what people love most about Baker Park, Jake says “The views! It’s the best place to see Frederick’s skyline. It’s a great place to go for a peaceful outing and experience wildlife and the waters of Carroll Creek and Culler Lake.” such as the June Jubilee, the free Toni Saylor Summer Concert Series, and the Labor Day Breakfast, which is hosted by the War Memorial Foundation to support the Park. Executive Director Bob Williams points out that the 19.5-acre park has always been supported by “incredible people that come together to make a difference for our community.” This has been true from the very beginning when, on March 28, 1947, the Berkeley County War Memorial Association Inc. was officially formed and purchased land for $15,000 to memorialize area residents who lost their lives in World War I. Officially dedicated in August 1959, Martinsburg-Berkeley County Parks and Recreation took over daily operations in 1987. At the center of War Memorial Park is a WWI doughboy statue which includes the names of 41 soldiers from the area who served in World War I, along with a list of nurses and a separate list of African American soldiers. In an area noted for its many lovely outdoor spaces, Bobs thinks he knows why War Memorial Park in particular attracts so many repeat visitors. “It has something for everyone. Jake Wynn, the marketing and communications manager for Visit Frederick believes the trail system is one of its most unique features. Baker Park’s “proximity to downtown means it’s easy to have a city experience and then take a lovely stroll or bike ride through a green space directly adjacent to the historic district.” At 58 acres its large size sets it Baker Park 121 N. SPRING 2023 | 19 CLEANING AND ORGANIZING YOUR HOME IN THE SPRING IS AN OLD TRADITION, STEMMING FROM A TIME WHEN HOMES WERE HEATED BY FIRES, AND DOORS WERE KEPT SHUT TIGHT TO KEEP OUT THE WINTER COLD. SPENDING LONG DAYS INDOORS MEANT AN ACCUMULATION OF SOOT, DUST, AND…PILES OF STUFF. WHILE WE’RE NO LONGER PUTTING OUT THE FIRE AND THROWING OPEN THE SHUTTERS AFTER A LONG WINTER, THERE ARE STILL MANY BENEFITS TO AIRING OUT YOUR HOME AND GETTING RID OF THE CLUTTER.  While it can seem like a chore, there are health benefits to getting your home organized—for both mind and body. And, there are many locally-owned businesses ready to help you get things in order and clean out your space. In short: you don’t have to tackle the task alone. STEP 1: CUT THE MIND CLUTTER Whether you’re cleaning out an estate, revamping your organizational system, or just trying to declutter, IAP and Clutterbug Certified Organizers Paula Montgomery and Leann Tomlin know just how much anxiety clutter can cause. Paula started Hagerstown-based A–Z Organizing after discovering how much she enjoyed the process of organization. Her daughter Leann joined her shortly afterward, and now they work together to help others to create calm out of chaos. “Clutter can cause anxiety,” the mother-daughter team says. With it, there’s “more to clean, more to dust. Your home can feel more comfortable and peaceful without all the stuff. When it’s gone, so is that anxiety.” Many of their clients feel overwhelmed or embarrassed, they say. “It’s hard to see past the piles of stuff. We stress confidentiality and no judgment. When you come in with a fresh outlook to give suggestions, you can almost visibly see people’s relief.”  The duo has recently added Paula’s 16-year-old granddaughter, Alyssa, as a helper and assistant, making A–Z a Spring Into Home Organization Local businesses make it easier to lose the clutter and find peace of mind. by Kate Rader (LR) A-Z Organizing, Paula Montgomery, her daughter Leann Tomlin, and granddaughter Alyssa help homeowners create calm out of chaos.

20 | WiYNN.com three-generation company. Paula says they’ve enjoyed turning their passion into a profession. “I’ve moved a lot in my adult life, and have found so much joy in unpacking, organizing, and fixing things up. When I helped a friend set up her AirBNB, I realized this is something I would love to do.” STEP 2: MAKE A PLAN A–Z offers an initial phone conversation to better understand the challenges the homeowner is facing. “When you’re dealing with your own stuff you put a lot of sentimental value on it. An outside person can help make it easier to let go.”  “We ask a lot of questions. Like, do they have a space in their house that IS working? Why? Have they tried to get organized on their own? What did and didn’t work?” Leann applies the Clutterbug approach (made popular by HGTV) to help customers learn about what kind of “Bug” they are — in other words, what their personal organizational style is.  Some people like to have their things hidden out of sight, and some like to have them shown, so Leann and Paula believe it’s important to know what goals their clients have. They say that people often call when they’re overwhelmed with the amount of stuff they have and don’t know where to start, have trouble getting the kids ready for school, or are on a deadline because things feel out of order, are downsizing and need to purge, or even when couples are trying to marry their styles together.  STEP 3: CATEGORIZE “My husband likes micro categories and for things to be hidden. I need macro Donating your gently used items instead of throwing them away is not only environmentally friendly, it can help organizations fund their mission- like Brooke’s House, which helps women attain a life of sobriety. Above: Choosing clear containers make it easy to find what’s been put away.

SPRING 2023 | 21 categories and to see them,” Leann says. “A great way to start is to go room to room and categorize items as you pick them up. What will you keep, what’s trash, what do you need to look at later, what goes in a different place, and what can you let go of?” They both believe that it’s important to be able to access things in the order of how they’re used, as in a kitchen. “Everyone needs a command center— somewhere to drop paperwork, keys, important things. A central area where a family can drop their things neatly.” Having organizational systems that work for you can take the guessing out of where to put items and make your home easier to maintain. A–Z offers different packages and price points to suit a customer’s budget and aesthetic. “We’re all individuals, so we organize to fit your lifestyle. Everyone has a different space. Nothing’s impossible.” STEP 4: DONATE OR DITCH? Since organizing undoubtedly requires decluttering, what the heck should you do with all that stuff? Kevin and Angie Sherman and their son Kevin Jr. started Dümpster LLC six years ago to address the need for compact residential dumpsters.  Angie says they’ve become popular because they’re so convenient. “We offer five sizes of dumpsters to choose from—all of which fit right in tight spaces like the homeowner’s driveway.” The dumpsters are perfect for removing trash and debris for smaller projects like a bathroom renovation or cleaning out an attic or basement, to larger cleanouts like estates.  The seven-day rental includes free drop off and pick up within a 30-minute radius, and landfill fees, even for larger metal items like lawnmowers. Dumpsters even have doors that open in the back to make loading heavier items like couches easy.  If you have items that are still usable, consider donating instead of ditching. Brooke’s House Thrift Store is one of Clothing: Turn your hangers backward in the closet. After a year, if you have clothing on a hanger that hasn’t been turned around, get rid of it.  Pantry: Put the things you use the most at eye level. Don’t take up valuable real estate in the pantry with things you rarely use. Cabinets: Put things you only use at the holidays back in that weird cabinet that’s hard to get to. You know you have one. Just get started: Go room by room with a trash bag or a box for donations. If you see items you can throw away, or donate, bag them right then and there. Small steps: Set a timer for 15 minutes and pick one area to declutter or organize. You’ll be surprised at what you can get in a short amount of time.  Bite by bite: To avoid getting overwhelmed, don’t look at the house as a whole. Instead, tackle a drawer or a cabinet at a time. Leann says they can help steer people to prioritize what’s bothering them the most. “Often once you get started and see the progress you’ll be motivated to do more,” she says. Decluttering Tips From A-Z Leann Tomlin and Paula Montgomery from A-Z Organizing Solutions share their tips for decluttering at home. the worthwhile nonprofits that take donations of gently used goods to sell and support their mission. Started by Kevin Simmers, in honor of his daughter Brooke, Brooke’s House is a “Financial and social enterprise for women who are in early recovery,” says delivery and donation pickup manager Ashley Robison, who herself completed the program more than a year ago.  The nonprofit’s thrift store and coffee shop are an important part of the recovery process, Ashley says. “It’s a way for the girls to find their sense of self-worth and change the face of what people think of addicts. It helps them find a sense of purpose and that they can give back.” Donors can drop gently used items

SPRING 2023 | 23 Garden Theory Three local gardening gurus recommend ways to take your garden to the next level. By Kate Rader Photos by Jessica Snyder, Guten Tag Shop Local No two garden spaces are alike. They can be showy and bold, or very personal — tiny spaces for only the gardener to enjoy. They reflect the style and needs of the people who enjoy them.  With so many options, it’s easy to get bogged down in the details. However, with a little planning, a garden can be an important space that you enjoy for many months — if not year-round. Luckily, three area businesses were willing to share their knowledge with our readers, offering suggestions for building the landscape of your dreams. A FLEXIBLE FOUNDATION Jessica Snyder opened her garden decor shop, Guten Tag, in 2009. Influenced by German and Swedish floral designers, she turned her passion into a business that sells vintage and vintage-inspired garden, patio, and porch decor out of a 200-year-old cottage in Funkstown, MD.  “I blend European design, which uses a lot of natural textures like dried vines and coconut fiber, with some Williamsburg style. I like to follow the seasons and incorporate rabbits, eggs, and little things you see outside.” WiYNN: What are some great foundational pieces for a garden? JESSICA: I think tall or large urns are great because you can easily decorate and change them up with seasonal flowers and plants. You can also adapt them to your style. If you have a formal garden with a more modern look, try an urn with a matte finish, or for a cottage garden, use a terra cotta or old stone urn.

Even if you don’t have a big place you can add an arbor or gate to set the tone for your space. For a modern style, a steel arbor with straight lines looks good. If you have a cottage or farmhouse-style garden you could get a wooden arbor and grow grapevine around it.  WiYNN: What decor items elevate the look and feel quickly? JESSICA: I love to finish off my space, even down to the planters, because the little details matter so much. You could surround a planter with a grapevine wreath and then plant a boxwood or a flower in the middle. Or use a texture spray on a plastic pot to make it look like stone. I have a “secret garden” in my yard where I put two old chairs, stone bunny rabbits, and some salvaged items planted with flowers and herbs for decoration. In gardening, there’s nothing you can do wrong because it’s always changing or you can change it.  ENGAGE THE SENSES Lurgan’s Greenhouse, located in Orrstown, PA is known for their tremendous variety of plants — and deep knowledge about how to grow a thriving garden. Partner and nursery manager Reuben Fisher says they are open year-round and sell annuals, over 1,000 varieties of perennials, vegetable plants, water gardening supplies, and tools to customers and landscapers around the tri-state area.  WiYNN: What’s a great accent plant for a garden? REUBEN: Japanese maples — which look like miniature trees — are a very good accent plant because they have delicate and colorful leaves with a lot of texture. There are over 1,000 varieties but about 15 common ones that range from red and orange to green and yellow.  A sculptured piece, like a topiary, also makes an excellent focal point. Topiaries are shrubs (usually arborvitae, boxwood, or Alberta spruce) trimmed into a design like a spiral or a pom pom. They do take some maintenance. Keep in mind there will be no garden that’s going to stay nice without maintenance. WiYNN: Can you suggest some cornerstones for a beautiful landscape? REUBEN: A lot of people plant hydrangeas. They’re colorful with varieties for sun or shade. There are

SPRING 2023 | 27 Neighborhood Flavor CRAFT BEER IS HAVING A MOMENT. According to a recent survey by DSM, a leading food and beverage industry organization, the largest increase in craft beer consumption is taking place among those consumers aged 18-30, who are adventurous drinkers and like to experiment with a wide diversity of beer styles and taste profiles. Craft beer aficionados also appreciate sustainability and quality, and feel that the story, motivations, and purpose of the company behind the beer are important.  Craft brewers excel at telling this story, but with so many new breweries making their home in the Tri-State area, it can be hard to know which one will be the perfect fit for you and your group of beer-loving friends. But if you’re looking for a local spot with a laid-back vibe where you can enjoy craft beer, seltzers, and even zero-alcohol options that are as tasty as the free popcorn, Thick-N-Thin Brewing Co. in Hagerstown just might be the place for you. Opened in August of 2022, Thick-NThin is a reference not only to Adam and Sassan Shaool—two brothers who created the brewery and have worked together and supported each other through good times and bad—but also to those people in our lives who we love the most, who we want to spend time with, laugh with: our ride-or-dies who are with us through thick and thin.  Adam says that he not only wanted to create a place for friends and family to gather but also a place where the art of craft brewing was celebrated and enjoyed by “the normal beer drinker, not just the beer maker.” But even the most appealing surroundings and welcoming ambiance won’t win the brew wars if your beer, ales, and hard Thick-N-Thin brewery celebrates great beer and the camaraderie of brothers Adam and Sassan Shaool Beginning with a Bang Newcomers Thick-N-Thin Brewing Co. are already making an impact with their spirit of community and serve-yourself TNT Tap Wall. Listen to the sounds of an authentic mariachi band — complete with violins and horns — as Mariachi Los Mensajeros Del Sur De Humberto Guzman plays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Energetic fivepiece Latin fusion band De Tierra Caliente will make you want to get up and dance from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Then, dance the rest of the evening away with the hot Latin DJ Domingo Distrakshun Mencia, the official deejay for Hagerstown’s Hispanic Festival. Local craft vendors onsite for an artisan shopping experience. Come Dance and get festive for WiYNN’s Funky Fiesta on Cinco de Mayo! Dance, Shop, play games and party!
