33rd Sunday Ordinary Time ~ When we give to the poor, do we give so that we will receive thanks? Do we give because we believe that reaching out in love and compassion is a right or good thing to do? Where is the reward? Is it in ‘getting something’ from the person (thanks) or aligning our actions and our cares of the heart with something we believe? Today’s gospel speaks of multiplying one’s talents or burying them out of fear. Using and giving our talents to others, using and giving our energy and time to others, using and sharing our money with others( all of these are ways of multiplying. Burying any of these out of fear freezes, paralyzes, stagnates, lessens, destroys even the hope that something more might come about by the use of or sharing of our talents, our energy or time, our money. To put it in gospel terms: “For to everyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; but from the one who has not, even what little he has will be taken away.” Giving/sharing talents, time, energy, money IS the gift given and received. Giving/sharing is in itself the reward. This is the great secret revealed by Jesus. This is the key given to open the doors of inner peace and happiness. Jesus understood this. Jesus taught this. Jesus gives this as gift. Every once in awhile, people will say: “Father, after I have given so much money to the church, or so many hours of service, doesn’t the church owe me something in return. Surely the church should make an exception for me.” It is an interesting comment. When we give to the church of our talent, our energy or time, or our money, we need to ask ourselves why we give? Is it to give thanks to God for all he has given? Is it so we can be paid back in special favors? Is it to be recognized? Or is it because we have discovered that Jesus’ words are absolutely true? CATHOLIC CAMPAIGN FOR HUMAN DEVELOPMENT Next weekend we will take up the Annual Collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. CCHD was founded in 1970 by the U.S. Bishops, as their domestic anti-poverty program. They realized that outreach through established charitable services was not creating the changes people needed in order to get themselves out of poverty. With this goal in mind, the bishops worked to address the underlying policies and systems that perpetuate poverty, as a complement to direct service. Special envelopes are in the pews. Thank you for your generosity. SACRAMENT PROGRAM IN NOVEMBER If you do not have either your Confirmation or Eucharist or would simply love to renew and strengthen your faith, you are welcome to join us on this amazing journey. On November 11, Mrs. Donna Ganger, former teacher at St. Bernard School lost the battle with cancer and is now with our Lord. We pray for her and for her family. Rest in Peace. PROJECT ‘ANGEL TREE’ Please join us in the collective purchasing of gifts for children who have one or both parents currently in prison. ANGEL TREE is a national program connecting parents in prison with their children through the delivery of Christmas gifts. When the gifts are given to the children, a Gospel presentation is shared. On the weekend of November 22 & 23 after all the Masses, there will be a table set up for Project ‘ANGEL TREE’’. You may pick up an “Angel Tag” to purchase gifts. Volunteers are needed in the help of wrapping and distributing the gifts and Gospel to these children. Please contact Mary Trujillo through the church office for more information.

33º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario ~ Cuando damos a los pobres, lo damos para recibir las gracias? ¿Lo damos porque creemos que dando amor y compasión es algo bueno y correcto de hacer? ¿Dónde está la recompensa? ¿Está en "conseguir algo" de la persona (las gracias) o lo está en alinear nuestras acciones y actos del corazón con algo que creemos? El evangelio de hoy habla de la multiplicación de los talentos o de enterrarlos por temor. El usar y dar nuestros talentos a los demás, el utilizar y dar nuestra energía y tiempo a los demás, el usar y compartir nuestro dinero con los demás ... todas estas son formas de multiplicarse. El enterrar cualquiera de éstos talentos por miedo, congela, paraliza, estanca, aminora, destruye incluso la esperanza de que algo más podría suceder al hacer uso de ellos o por la distribución de nuestros talentos, nuestra energía, tiempo, y nuestro dinero. Para ponerlo en términos del Evangelio: "Pues al que tiene se le dará y le sobrará; pero al que tiene poco, se le quitará aun ese poco que tiene." Dar y compartir talentos, tiempo, energía, dinero es el regalo dado y recibido. El dar y compartir es en sí mismo la recompensa. Este es el gran secreto revelado por Jesús. Esta es la clave dada para abrir las puertas de la paz y la felicidad interior. Jesús entendió esto. Jesús enseñó esto. Jesús da esto como regalo. De cuando en cuando, la gente dice: "Padre, después de haber dado tanto dinero a la iglesia, o tantas horas de servicio, que la iglesia no debe darme algo a cambio? Sin duda, la Iglesia debe hacer una excepción por mí." Es un comentario interesante. Cuando le damos a la iglesia algo de nuestro talento, de nuestra energía, tiempo o dinero, tenemos que preguntarnos por qué le damos? ¿Es para dar gracias a Dios por todo lo que nos ha dado? ¿Es para que se nos pague en favores especiales? ¿Es para ser reconocido? ¿O es porque hemos descubierto que las palabras de Jesús son absolutamente ciertas? La próxima semana se llevará a cabo la Colecta para la Campaña Católica para el Desarollo Humano (CCHD por sus siglas en Inglés). CCHD fue fundada en 1970 por los Obispos de Estados Unidos como su programa nacional antipobreza. Se percataron que llegar a la comunidad a través de los servicios caritativos establecidos no estaba produciendo los cambios que las personas necesitaban para salir de la pobreza.
