Fr. Joe’s Journal We celebrate the Feast of the Assumption. The feast of Assumption takes place Monday the 15th. Due to the feast falling on a Monday it will not be a Holy Day of Obligation.

We near the beginning of the school year. Our college and university students are beginning to return to school. Catholic grammar schools and high schools also will begin soon. We pray for all young people whether they returning to school or beginning to study at a new school. Traditionally the beginning of the school year also marks the beginning of parish year. Summer vacations come to an end and our mass attendance increases. We pray that the end of the summer brings a lessening of violence in our streets. May the last days of summer be a time of joy for you and all those you love. News from the Archdiocese: Our parish, as all parishes of the archdiocese, will take part in the Renew my Church effort. We are also participating in the To Teach Who Christ is effort in the archdiocese.

I ask you to pray for our city, state, nation and the world. We as a community face many different challenges. We need to turn to God for his assistance and guidance.

We will continue our formation series on August 17. I thank Deacon Rossow for leading this series of presentations .

We offer prayers for all those in need. We pray for those who are ill, recovering from surgery, shut-in or are in nursing homes.

We need to pray for our archdiocese and for our parish. Our archdiocese and parish have many blessings which we need to appreciate. Gratitude becomes necessary when we face challenges and today we face great challenges. We share with every time the presence of challenges. There is a wonderful spiritual entitled We Have Come this far by Faith. It reminds us that we need confidence in the power of God and persevere in the face of obstacles. I ask you to pray for the leaders of the Church that we may have wisdom and be guided by the spirit of love. . We pray for Msgr. McNamara. Msgr. John McNamara died this past week I had the opportunity to know this good man for many years. Pray for him.

El Diario del Padre Joe Celebramos la Fiesta de la Asunción. La Fiesta de la Asunción en el lunes 15 de agosto. Debido a que es un lunes, no es fiesta de guardar este año.

Nos acercamos al comienzo del año escolar. Los estudiantes universitarios están comenzando a volver a las clases. Las escuelas católicas comenzaran las clases pronto. Rezamos por todos los jóvenes que están volviendo a la escuela o que están empezando en una escuela nueva. Tradicionalmente el comienzo del año escolar también marca el comienzo del año parroquial. Las vacaciones de verano terminan y el numero de personas participando en la misa crecerá. Rezamos para que el fin del verano traiga una disminución de violencia en nuestras calles. Que los últimos días de verano sea un tiempo de felicidad para ustedes y sus seres queridos. Noticias dela Arquidiócesis. Nuestra parroquia, como todas las parroquias de la arquidiócesis, serán parte de los esfuerzos de Renueva Mi Iglesia. También estamos participando en el esfuerzo Enseñar Quien es Cristo de la arquidiócesis.

Les pido que recen por nuestra ciudad, estado, nación y el mundo. Como comunidad enfrentamos muchos desafíos diferentes. Necesitamos volver Dios por su ayuda y guía.

Continuaremos nuestra series educativa el 17 de agosto. Agradezco al Diacono Rossow por dirigir esta serie de presentaciones.

Volunteers a vital link in the food chain.

Voluntarios: parte vital de la cadena alimentaria

The Greater Chicago Food Depository has used this mantra for over 30 years. Our food pantry is a prime example of this expression. Without the men and women that come every week to help our families we could not accomplish our mission. Whether they interview our families, help them choose their food, stock the tables or help unload our deliveries their dedication is remarkable and invaluable. Each session our volunteers treat our clients with dignity and respect. Our volunteers get to know our clients and in a sense become part of their families. Over the years, they have seen shy children become chatter boxes. They have witnessed families announce that their lives have gotten back on track so they will not be coming any more. Our volunteers are a combination of parishioners and neighbors. While our core group of volunteers are retirees each school year we welcome students from St. Joseph Seminary and Loyola University to help us. Are you looking to get involved in the community? Are you looking to help the less fortunate in your neighborhood? The food pantry is always in need of good hard working individuals. We ask that you commit for at least a season. That you be willing to commit for a definite day and time. Evangelization Begins at St. Ignatius

Evangelización Comienza en San Ignacio

This year there is an effort by Chicagoland Catholics to look at how they are bringing their faith to family, friends, the workplace and the marketplace. Of course St. Ignatius parish will do its part in being a shining example of Christian faith in action to the community we serve. The first step is to discuss “What Is Catholic Evangelization”? “How can we be involved”? The next five bulletins will describe Catholic Evangelization. Below is the first of five descriptions of what we can call Everyday Evangelizing for Everyday Catholics.

Este año hay un esfuerzo de los Católicos de Chicagoland reflexionan sobre como están compartiendo su fe con la familia, amigos, el trabajo y el mercado. Por supuesto la parroquia de San Ignacio hará su parte en ser un brillante ejemplo de fe cristiana en acción con la comunidad que servimos. El primer paso es discutir ¿“Que Es Evangelización Católica”? ¿“Cómo podemos participar”? En los próximos cinco boletines describiremos Evangelización Católica de lo que podemos llamar Evangelización Cotidiana para Católicos Comunes.

Evangelization first begins when you accept God’s Word into your life. Then you proclaim that Word to others by living it out in service and witness. Whenever possible you share your story of Jesus in your life, and then invite others to deepen their relationship with Christ through the Church community (Pope Paul VI, Evangelization in the Modern World). This is most effectively done through everyday evangelizing.

El primer paso para la Evangelización comienza cuando se acepta la Palabra de Dios en nuestras vidas. Entonces uno proclama la Palabra a otros viviendo el evangelio y siendo testigos. Cada vez que sea posible comparte tu historia de Jesús en tu vida, y luego invita a otros a profundizar su relación con Cristo por medio de la comunidad de la Iglesia (Papa Pablo VI, Evangelización en el Mundo Moderno). Esto es más efectivo por medio de la evangelización cotidiana.

Virtues and Vices On Wednesday, August 17 the next presentation in the Summer Adult Faith Formation Series will consider aspects of Catholic moral teaching. Focus of attention will be on the origins of Catholic thinking about the world and humanity. Also to be considered is the effort to be virtuous while avoiding vices that impede progress to improvement. The program will be from 7 pm to 8:30 pm in the Holy Name Room. Facilitator for the evening will be Deacon Dr. Lawrence F. Rossow former Professor of Ethics. Refreshments will be served.

Hello Parishioners of St. Ignatius Parish! My name is Fr. Mark Augustine. I am a priest for the Archdiocese of Chicago and have been ordained for 3 years. This past July I began a new assignment at St. Joseph College Seminary, as part of Loyola University. Prior to this I had served as the Associate Pastor at Our Lady of Ransom Parish, in Niles. Fr. Joe has asked if I would be able to help out by celebrating masses on weekends here. It is a great joy to accept this and get to know this community in the coming months and years. I grew up in Chicagoland area for most of my life. I am the youngest of three and all my family still lives in the area. After high school I attended Loyola University for a Bachelor’s in History. During Senior year I attended the Rome campus in a study abroad program. It was there when I first felt the call to priesthood. Upon my return to the States, I began the application process for the seminary and started at Mundelein Seminary in 2007. During my free time I enjoy going to the movies and camping/ hiking. I am greatly looking forward to this new position at the seminary where I will be in charge of recruitment and admissions – seeking to help build up the future of the Church. ¡Hola Feligreses de la Parroquia de San Ignacio! Mi nombre es Padre Mark Augustine. Soy un sacerdote de la Arquidiócesis de Chicago y me ordené hacer 3 años. Este julio pasado comencé mi nuevo puesto en el Seminario Universitario San José, parte de la Universidad de Loyola. Anteriormente era párroco asociado en la Parroquia Nuestra Señora de la Mercedes, en Niles. Padre Joe me ha pedido que ayude celebrando misas aquí los fines de semana. Es una gran alegría aceptar eso y poder conocer a la comunidad en los próximos meses y años. Crecí en el área de Chicago la mayor parte de mi vida. Soy el menor de tres hermanos y toda mi familia vive en el área. Luego del secundario fue a la Universidad de Loyola por un Bachillerato en Historia. Durante mi último año fui al centro en Roma en un programa de estudio en el exterior. Fui allí donde por primera vez sentí el llamado al sacerdocio. A la vuelta en los Estados Unidos, comencé el proceso de aplicación al seminario y empecé en el Seminario Mundelein en 2007. Durante mi tiempo libre disfruto de ir al cine y acampar y caminar. Estoy entusiasmado de este nuevo trabajo en el seminario donde estaré a cargo de reclutamiento y aceptación – buscando construir el futuro de la Iglesia. August 15: Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary

On November 1, 1950, Pope Pius XII defined the dogma of the Assumption: the Blessed Virgin Mary, at the end of her earthly life, was taken up, body and soul, into the glory of heaven. This belief dates back to the time of the Apostles. Another name know for that feast is the “Dormition of Mary”, the “falling asleep”. The name was changed to “Assumption” to proclaimed that she had been taken up, body and soul, into heaven. “It completes God’s work in her since it was not fitting that the flesh that had given life to God himself should ever undergo corruption.” It’s not a holy day of obligation this year.
