Fraternity and Managing impulsivity

n January 17, the 11th grade class entertained the school during a flag ceremony presentation of the value of the month, friendship.  

Their musical performance included reenactments of situations where someone might really need a friend.  The dramatic interpretations included scenarios that students face in real-life, everyday.  Their act concluded with the confirmation that it is friends that are there for us at the end of a long day, in good times and in bad times. Congratulations to the 11th grade for another spectacular performance!

l pasado 18 de enero alumnas de NH Santiago recibieron las de NH Santo Domingo para compartir en un torneo amistoso de Futsal. Las estudiantes que conforman el equipo de Futsal femenino, dieron la bienvenida a sus invitadas, demostraron sus habilidades y compartieron como buenas compañeras. Los entrenadores Carlos Otero y Domingo Martínez, las acompañaron y motivaron durante el partido. Las chicas disfrutaron del encuentro, y contaron con la asistencia y apoyo de sus compañeros, amigos, familiares y miembros de la institución. Felicidades a nuestros equipos!

ara recordar y celebrar el 201 aniversario del natalicio de nuestro padre de la patria, el departamento académico coordinó un acto de banderas especial, que recordara sus ideales y acciones por las que luchó.

El acto tuvo lugar el día 27 de enero, donde los niños de 1er. grado presentaron las principales frases del ideario Duartiano; los alumnos de 3ero. cantaron el Himno a Duarte, 4to grado explicó significado de las letras del himno; los alumnos de 9no recitaron uno de sus poemas, y los estudiantes de 8vo. Hicieron un recorrido por los acontecimientos más importantes de la vida de  Duarte. Nuestros alumnos lograron hacer excelentes presentaciones para recordar el gran legado que nos ha dejado nuestro padre de la patria.

econd Grade is studying about China. Each year they celebrate Chinese New Year, which is a very important celebration for them. In the flags ceremony on Friday 31th, the boys shared with the school community some relevant information about this celebration.

Chinese New Year begins sometime between January 21st and February 20th and lasts 15 days. This dragon is a symbol of good luck. Dragons are sometimes used in Chinese New Year parades. Many people wear red and gold. Those colors are thought to bring happiness and wealth. Family and friends give children small red envelopes filled with money. People eat special foods, such as noodles, during Chinese New Year. They also eat dumplings and other foods called dim sum. Also, they decorate their homes with paper decorations and scrolls. They usually show symbols of good luck, wealth, and happiness. The Chinese lion dance is part of the Chinese New Year celebration. People believe that the dance brings good luck. The Chinese people use an animal to name each year. The year 2014 is the year of the horse.

Día Nacional de la Juventud

l 31 de enero de cada año se celebra en nuestro país el Día Nacional de la Juventud, en honor a San Juan Bosco, el llamado Padre y Maestro de la Juventud, un santo que se dedicó por completo al trabajo con los jóvenes de las calles y delincuentes de la Italia del Siglo XIX. Con tal ocasión, nuestra comunidad escolar estaba de fiesta. Para iniciar la celebración, nuestra profe Fanny organizó un zumbatón, en el que puso a mover a grandes y chicos. Además, durante el día, los alumnos pudieron disfrutar de diferentes juegos, música a cardo de nuestro DJ Lester, pinta caritas con profe Berta, brindis, y para finalizar una hora loca, donde un grupo de profesores hicieron un recorrido por las aulas para animar y celebrar esta hermosa celebración.

C

omo parte de la evaluación oral de la materia de English Language y Reading, los alumnos de 4to grado presentaron la obra titulada “The Shoemakers and the Elves” en día 31 de enero. Los alumnos tuvieron la oportunidad de trabajar en equipo, practicar la pronunciación y fluidez, así como desarrollar su creatividad dándole un toque especial al guion de la obra. Los niños disfrutaron esta divertida historia, la cual presentaron a los alumnos de otros grados que fueron invitados. Este tipo de proyectos orales, se llevan a cabo dentro del aula como una forma de incentivar el uso del idioma de la forma correcta. De parte del Prof. Sánchez y los alumnos de 4to grado, queremos felicitar de manera especial a la alumna Jade Infante, quien sorprendió a todos al aprender su parte del guion y perder el miedo escénico. s part of the oral evaluation of English language and reading subject, students from 4th grade presented the play entitled “The Shoemakers and the Elves”. Students had the opportunity to work as a team, practice the pronunciation and fluency, also to develop their creativity by giving a special touch to the script of the play. Kids enjoyed this funny story, which they presented to students from other grades who were invited. This type of oral projects, take place in the classroom as a way to encourage the use of the language in a right way. From teacher Sánchez and students from 4th grade, we specially want to congratulate student Jade Infante, who surprised everyone by learning her part of the script and losing the stage fright. Congratulations Jade for your great job in “The Shoemakers and the Elves”.

PROXIMAS ACTIVIDADES Feria Dominicana

Con motivo de la celebración de nuestra independencia, y como una forma de resaltar nuestras costumbres, cultura y valores, el 26 de este mes estaremos celebrando la Feria Dominicana, en honor a las Hermanas Mirabal. La misma estará abierta a las visitas a partir de las 12:00pm. Quedan todos invitados!

Presentación Comparsa New Horizons-ILTAE El próximo 17 de febrero, nuestro Colegio, junto al ILTAE, presentará su comparsa que este año lleva por nombre “Festival Holi: Raga, Tala y Natyam de la India”. Para nuestros Niños, Niñas y Jóvenes:

¿Cómo puedes identificar las señales de éxito en la práctica del valor de la “Fraternidad” y entrenar en la destreza del pensamiento de “Manejar la Impulsividad”? • Busco soluciones y no peleas con mis compañeros. • Comparto mis materiales con los demás compañeros y compañeras. • Converso y atiendo a los demás. • Ayudo a un compañero que ha hecho algo indebido, explicándole lo incorrecto de su actuación. • Me preocupo por mis compañeros. • Me esfuerzo por hacer algo útil en beneficio de mis amigos.

Ejemplo de un líder que ha demostrado el valor de la fraternidad: Martin Luther King Jr.

En la República Dominicana más de 87 especies, entre reptiles, aves y especies de diferentes grupos que se encuentran en estado de amenaza. Se considera como especies en amenaza a aquellas especies cuyas poblaciones se han reducido considerablemente y podrían desaparecer para siempre. Las razones por las cuales se encuentran en peligro suelen ser muy diversas pero generalmente están asociadas a la pérdida o alteración del ambiente donde viven y a su explotación no racional. Entre las especies más amenazadas se encuentra el manatí. Varias formas de valorar nuestras especies protegidas:

Desde una edad muy temprana participó como activista de los derechos civiles. Fue galardonado con el Premio Nobel de la Paz en el año de 1964, por su lucha encaminada a terminar con la segregación y discriminación racial a través de medios no violentos. Es recordado como uno de los grandes líderes en Norteamérica. Fue asesinado en 1968.

• 1. Prohibir la caza de animales. • 2. Respetar los derechos de los animales. • 3. No comprar especies exóticas ilegalmente. • 4. Proteger sus hábitats.

Compartimos una de sus reflexiones: “Hemos aprendido a volar como los pájaros, a nadar como los peces; pero no hemos aprendido el sencillo arte de vivir como hermanos”.

For our Children and Youth:

How can you identify signs of success in practicing the value of Fraternity and training in the habit of mind “Managing Impulsivity?” 1. Seek for solutions, instead of fighting with my teammates. 2. I share my materials with other children and my classmates. 3. Talk and pay attention to others. 4. I help a classmate who has done something wrong to understand the wrongness of his/her actions. 5. I care about my classmates. 6. I strive to make something useful for the benefit of my friends.

7. I encourage a classmate or friend who is sad. 8. I am pleased with the positive achievements of others. 9. I worry about a sick or injured friend. 10. I show love and affection to my friends. 11. I avoid reacting when something bothers me. 12. I take time to think about how to respond and what to say. 13. In situations of anger, I withdraw to reflect and try to recognize what is the real reason of my feelings.

For parents and teachers:

How can we teach the value of “Fraternity” and train our students in the habit of mind “Managing Impulsivity”:

• By accepting others, adjusting my personality to enable coexistence, understanding, forgiving, giving, sharing, in small and large situations in my everyday life. • By being compassionate, approaching others, and joining them in their suffering, and helping to alleviate it. • By sharing what I have and what I know with those who most need it.

• By dominating my own actions and responses. • By making use of dialogue in my work, with my family and those who provide me services. • By respecting others and valuing their ideas. • By taking care of my responsibilities. • By doing things correctly.

Ecological Value: understand and assess the country’s protected species

In the Dominican Republic different species are being threatened. It’s estimated that more than 87 species, including reptiles, birds and mammals are in this threatened status. Those species considered as a threat are those whose populations have declined considerably, and could disappear forever. The reasons of risk are often very diverse but are generally associated with the loss or alteration of the environment where they live, and their irrational exploitation, among others. The most endangered species is the manatee. Several ways of knowing and valuing our protected species are:

1. To prohibit the hunting of animals. 2. To respect the rights of animals. 3. Not to buy species illegally.

4. To protect their habitats. 5. To avoid polluting the environment. 6. To notify authorities of any wrongdoing with these animals.

Example of leader who have demonstrated the value of fraternity: Martin Luther King Jr.  From a very early age he became a civil rights activist. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his struggle to end segregation and racial discrimination through nonviolent means. He is remembered as one of the great leaders in America. He was assassinated in 1968. We share one of his reflections: We have learned to fly like birds, swim like fish, but we have not learned the simple art of living like brothers.
