TPD 2022 Highlight 1 TPD Year Recap & Highlights    Mission Statement The mission of the Tewksbury Police Department is to reduce crime and the fear associated with crime; by providing the best possible service we can provide with the utmost integrity; by engaging the citizens with a community policing philosophy. Our objective is to improve the quality of life through community and inter‐agency partnerships to thereby promote a safe and secure community for all. Our department is comprised of 67 sworn officers and 7 full time employees.  The Town of Tewksbury has 30,417 residents and is located 24 miles north of Boston.  We average 48,000 calls for service and 600 arrests per year. Our officers continue to train in specialty areas like critical incidents, active shooter, stress resiliency, bias free policing, range qualifications as well as their annually required in‐service training. This past year we welcomed 6 new members to the department, Officers Michael Jones, Ali Bourassa, Matthew O’Brien, Jacob Saad, Stephen Johnson, and Charissa Edmonds. Matthew O’Brien graduated from Boylston Academy at the end of December 2022 and has begun his extensive Field Training.  Our two (2) student officers Stephen Johnson and Charissa Edmonds are in the Lynnfield Academy with anticipated graduation planned for June 2023.  An additional 3 student officers are scheduled to attend the January 30th Academy in Lynnfield. We congratulated 5 members of the department on completing 20 years of service in 2022. Congrats to: Sgt. Thomas Cooke, Officer Kim O’Keefe, SRO Eric Hanley, Officer Arthur Piccolo, & Officer Chris Scott. We also congratulated three members of the department on their well‐deserved promotions Christopher Lefebvre – Sergeant Dennis Peterson, Jr. – Lieutenant Peter Murray ‐ Sergeant


TPD 2022 Highlight 2 March happens to be both of K9s birthday month – This year Logan turned 4 on March 26th   & Leo turned 5 on March 18th. 2022 Calls for Service 47,798 Arrests 579 MV Crashes 610 TPD is currently seeking ODR suggestions.  If you and your friends (and parents) are up for the challenge submit your rink today!         LOGAN “4”                                        LEO “5” Last year started out 2022 with our 1st Annual outdoor hockey game.  A competitive game of friendly competition where officers vs kids in the community and showed off their skill.  This event was well received. Thanks to the Abruzi Family for hosting. Kids and officers had a blast.   The scheduling of 2023 game(s) is underway.


TPD 2022 Highlight 3                    Throughout the month of April, the Tewksbury Police Department in collaboration with Salem Five Bank offered custom and collectable police patches in lieu of a donation honoring and raising Autism Awareness. Annual June Bike Rodeo took place as we partnered with AAA and had many additional vendors participating.  Safety course and bike check ups we offered.  Many entered a raffle to win a bike.  Lots of winners and happy children.   Bikes were donated from many community partners Increased police presence was felt at Livingston Street Park over the summer, to keep the park area safe and as A reminder to all of who visit the area that it is an inclusive place for all to visit and enjoy.   These parks are for everyone and will remain a safe and fun place for our kids. The Tewksbury Police Department offered a free CPR course for Tewksbury residents age 16 and over. Space is limited to 20 participants. Certificate of completion was issued to students.   Watch for future classes to be announced. Officer Nick Ciaramella returned from his one year tour of duty. Wonderful welcome home gathering was had. We are glad he is back.  Thank you for your service!


TPD 2022 Highlight 4 2nd Annual Free ice cream truck rolling rally ...held on the last day of school.  To celebrate the last day of school   on Tuesday, June21st, the #Tewksbury Police Department rented an Ice Cream Truck and gave   out FREE ice cream.                             We increased our training and awareness of Officer Wellness, decreasing the stigma of PTSD, anxiety, and depression within our profession to continue to care for our officers.   This will continue to be a priority for Chief Columbus and an ongoing commitment to our people.    The officers participated in a six‐week wellness program, attending a 90‐minute session each week at the farm for educational sessions that include hands‐on experiences and activities with horses and self reflection in a holistic environment.  We cannot thank Strongwater Farm Therapeutic Equestrian Center and Hidden Battles enough for the opportunity they have provided our Officers to participate in this pilot program to aid Officers in destressing and caring for their mental well being in a proactive way.


TPD 2022 Highlight 5       1st Public Safety Night – TPD, TFD and NMRECC joined forces August 21st and hosted this 1st time event.    The Tewksbury Police Department, in collaboration with Tewksbury Fire and the Northern Regional Middlesex   Communication Center (NRMCC), hosted a cookout for residents and community members. Residents had the opportunity to meet Tewksbury public safety members. Attendees explored law enforcement   vehicles including police cruisers, fire trucks, ambulances, motorcycles, ATVs, Northeastern Massachusetts Law   Enforcement Council (NEMLEC) SWAT vehicles, and the Tewksbury Police Drone Unit.                                   Trading Cards – Community kids have had a great time collecting cards and hunting down officers.   Back by popular demand ‐ We offered our 2nd Annual Junior Police Academy for students entering Grades 5‐8 who are interested in learning more about law enforcement.  Topics including physical fitness and health and wellness classes; criminal law; investigations, cyber safety; CPR and first aid; drug and alcohol awareness; domestic violence, motor vehicle law, the K‐9 Unit, the Drone Unit, and mental health, with numerous hands‐ on activities to help students understand the content.  We had 154 kids participated, a 208% increase from last year!


TPD 2022 Highlight 6                  Coffee with a Cop On Wednesday, Oct. 5, police officers and command staff were on hand at Perfecto's Caffe, 1900 Main St.,   and Cumberland Farms, 270 Main St., for Coffee With a Cop.  We enjoyed connecting with the residents. Milk with a cop is our own spin where officers visit the kids in the schools.                      An Overdose Vigil held at the Tewksbury Recreation Center – honoring and remembering the lives lost due to an overdose or substance misuse. Tewksbury Police and Public Schools collaborated to offer students an introduction to the field of criminal justice through elective classes at Tewksbury Memorial High School.  Currently, about 20 juniors and seniors are taking Introduction to Criminal Justice, which provides an illuminating, hands‐on look at the daily work of law enforcement. TPD and the Front Line Initiative hosted Free Narcan Training and   Narcan.   Two sessions were held and we had a great turnout.


TPD 2022 Highlight 7                TPD participated in the National Drug Take Back day where the police department partner with the DEA and collect unwanted medications. Tewksbury Police joined the Pink Patch Project in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.  A suggested  $10 donation made directly to Dana‐ Farber Cancer Institute in order to receive a limited time patch. Strong Water Farm Hoe Down – TPD attended the Strong Water Farm Hoe Down in October.  It was a fun time meeting and interacting with many from the Tewksbury community. Strongwater Farm offers therapeutic programs to a wide range of individuals with physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges. Safe Halloween – was held in October at TMHS.  The TMHS National Honor Society students combined efforts with their Trunk or Treat.


TPD 2022 Highlight 8 TPD’s Therapy Dogs Officer Waffles and Dr. Brownie both turned 1 this year and have officially passed their Therapy Dog International Test.  Handlers and pups worked very hard to pass their test.  Congrats to all!                                                            In September we held a Recovery group meeting on Tuesday evenings. Meetings were held at the Tewksbury Police Station and run by the Front Line initiative.  If you are looking for a recovery group to discuss your journey, join us. Watch for a new group starting up in January! This was our 7th year participating in Military month Home Base Project – No Shave. We were honored to be a part of this great cause and raise awareness. TPD'S Brand new camo patches were unveiled.    Home Base is an excellent program sponsored by Mass General and the Red Sox Foundation that does incredible work to help military veterans and their families, many of whom are police officers. 1st annual Blanket and Sweatshirt Drive was held.  Thank you for the overwhelming support and collection.
