en el City Hall en un acto presidido por Ivy Taylor, Mayor de la ciudad de San Antonio, quien hizo un llamado al público convocando a personas de todos los sectores de la ciudad a inscribirse como voluntarios para cooperar con la cena de Acción de Gracias. El registro de voluntarios, dijo, “empieza hoy”. Taylor expresó que en tan importante festividad los asistentes, sin ninguna distinción, encuentran una cena apropiada

para el día de dar gracias y, sobre todo, un aliento de esperanza. Compartió la conferencia con los medios informativos, Patricia Jiménez, quien desde la ausencia de su padre Raul Jiménez ha tomado la dirección y delicada responsabilidad de esta magna festividad, que es sin duda la mayor de su clase en el país. A los recursos económicos necesarios para el desarrollo de la festividad Walmart donó

inicialmente 25 mil dólares. A lo que suma la labor de los voluntarios para diferentes actividades antes y durante la cena de Thanksgiving. University System construye Centro Médico en East Side Por Roberto J. Pérez [email protected] Cumpliendo una promesa a los habitantes de un amplio sector del East Side de la ciudad, University Health System inició la construcción del centro médico “Dr. Robert L. M. Hilliard Center” en el 601 Runnel Ave, que además de los mejores servicios médicos, su ubicación es muy accesible ya que se encuentra en el cruce con Walters St. e Interstate 35. Este centro servirá de prototipo para futuras clínicas de University Health System. Dispondrá de 20 consultorios para exámenes y producción de imágenes clínicas. Se enfocará primeramente en la salud de la mujer y los niños. Con presupuesto de 5 mi­ llones de dólares, el centro médico es construido en un terrero de dos hectáreas cedidas por San Antonio Housing Authority, con edificios que cubren 25 mil pies cuadrados.

Se estima que habrá de ser inaugurado a fines del 2017. El edificio fue dedicado en memoria del doctor Robert Hilliard, destacado pediatra, cirujano, dirigente de la comunidad y abogado de los pacientes de pocos recursos económicos. A través de su práctica asistió al nacimiento de 14 mil niños, además de otras funciones como cirujano. La ceremonia para empezar la obra se realizó el 27 de octubre, a la que asistieron los hijos del Dr. Hilliard: Bennie Hilliard Brown y Rudyard L.M. Hilliard. Nelson Wolff, juez del condado de Bexar, tuvo palabras de reconocimiento para el Dr. Hilliard como una personalidad respetada en todos los ámbitos de la ciudad por su desempeño profesional, señalando que es un gran acier­to dar su nombre al centro médico referido. Thanks to a new center, adults on the East Side will have the resources necessary to obtain a certificate or degree. The City, Alamo Colleges and SAISD have joined forces to officially open the new 56,000-square-foot Eastside Education & Training Center (EETC) on Wednesday morning in the Promise Zone at the former Pfeiffer Elementary School. The EETC is a onestop education and workforce training center, modeled after Alamo College’s highly successful Westside Education & Training Center (WETC). No Shave November! By Maria A Palafox, MD Hey! It’s November! This month all gentlemen are encouraged to let their beards grow in solidarity with men’s cancers, such as prostate or testicular cancer. The point is to change the face of men’s health and to provoke a conversation about common men’s cancers. Here are some facts about testicular, prostate and colon cancer that you can talk about with friends and family. Testicular cancer – It is most common between the ages of 15 and 40; however, it can affect males of any age, including infants and viejitos. The main risk factor is having had an undescended testicle, or a testicle that never came down to the scrotum. The risk of testicular cancer is highest in white men and lowest in African-American men; the risk for Hispanics is somewhere in the middle.

Tall, slim men are more likely to get testicular cancer; however, please don’t think this is a reason to gain/keep a bunch of weight. The benefits of being tall and slim far outweigh the risk of testicular cancer. The most common symptom is a lump on the testicle that doesn’t really hurt but is uncomfortable. Check yourself! Prostate cancer – The risk increases after the age of 50; most men are diagnosed after the age of 65. About 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime; 1 in 3 if you have a close relative with prostate cancer. The risk jumps to 83 percent if two close relatives (father or brothers) have it. It is more aggressive in African-American men than white men. There are over 2 million men living with prostate cancer in the United States today; most men die with this cancer, not because of it.

There are not really any symptoms when prostate cancer is small, so don’t wait—get checked! Colon cancer – Over 60 percent of deaths from colon cancer could be avoided with screening. The group with the fastest increase in the rate of colon cancer is the 18-44 age group. Blood in stool, constipation or abdominal pain can be signs of colon cancer. Colon cancer risk is linked to how much red meat we eat. The rate of colon cancer is highest in African-Americans, and the ones who don’t do as well are people of color, those with only a high school education or live in the South. Your risk of colon cancer is higher if you have relatives with colon cancer. If you have a relative who is young and has colon cancer, then we recommend screening beginning 10 years before their age of diagnosis. Know your family history

and personal risk factors, like a lot of red meat in your diet. Don’t shave this month, and get checked for these cancers—make the pledge, gentlemen!

Also brought into the relationship is the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium, to be held this year Dec. 6-10. A l g u nos de los residentes de Trump Place en Nueva York están tan Jorge Ramos avergonzados de vivir en un edificio de apartamentos con el nombre del candidato republicano a la presidencia, que han pedido que lo quiten. No es fácil, como reportó recientemente The New York Times. Es una cuestión complicada de contratos. Pero la vergüenza es real. ¿De qué se apenan? De que sus amigos, familiares y compañeros de trabajo los vinculen con una persona que ha insultado a inmigrantes, musulmanes, mujeres y personas con discapacidades, entre muchos otros. Hay palabras que hieren. Por eso en esta columna me limito a reproducir lo que ha dicho Donald Trump desde que lanzó su campaña por la Casa Blanca: 16 de junio de 2015: “Traen drogas. Traen el crimen. Son violadores”. (Sobre los inmigrantes que envía México a Estados Unidos.) 18 de julio de 2015: “Es un héroe de guerra porque lo capturaron. A mí me gusta la gente que no fue capturada”. (Sobre el senador republicano John McCain, capturado durante la guerra de Vietnam).

7 de agosto de 2015: “Le salía sangre de sus ojos, le salía sangre de todos lados”. (Sobre la periodista Megyn Kelly, quien le preguntó sobre los insultos que le ha hecho a las mujeres en el primer debate republicano). 25 de agosto de 2015: “Siéntate. Siéntate. Nadie te ha dado la palabra. Regrésate a Univisión”. (Lo que me dijo Trump antes de expulsarme de una conferencia de prensa en Iowa). 12 de noviembre de 2015: “Yo sé más de ISIS que los generales. (Trump dijo que no oyó bien la pregunta, por un problema de su audífono, cuan­d o le preguntaron en CNN si rechazaba el apoyo de

un exlíder del Ku Klux Klan). —3 de junio: “He sido tratado muy injustamente por este juez. Él es un juez de origen mexicano y yo estoy construyendo un muro”. (Sobre el juez Gonzalo Curiel, nacido en Indiana, que preside una demanda contra la Universidad Trump). —27 de julio: “Rusia, si están escuchando, espero que puedan encontrar los 30 mil mensajes de correo electrónico que se han perdido”. (Trump pidiéndole a los rusos piratear los mensajes de correo electrónico de Hillary Clinton. Luego su campaña dijo que era una broma). 30 de julio: “Si ves a su esposa, estaba parada ahí. No tenía nada que decir. Quizás no la dejaban”. (Sobre el discurso de los padres del soldado estadounidense Humayun Khan, muerto en Iraq en el 2004. Ellos criticaron a Trump por su propuesta de prohibir la entrada de musulmanes). 31 de agosto: “México va a pagar por el muro”. (Después de su visita relámpago con el presidente de México, Enrique Peña Nieto). 16 de septiembre: “Barack Obama nació en Estados Unidos. Punto”. (Tras años de cuestionar públicamente el lugar de nacimiento, Hawái, del primer presidente afro­ americano). 26 de septiembre: “Es que

(Sobre la sospecha que no ha pagado impuestos federales por años y su negativa a dar a conocer sus declaraciones de impuestos). 27 de septiembre: “Alicia Machado ganó cantidades masivas de peso y eso era un verdadero problema”. (Sobre la Miss Universo venezolana quien lo acusó de maltrato). 7 de octubre: “Cuando eres una estrella, te dejan hacerlo. Puedes hacer cualquier cosa, agarrarlas de la vagina”. (De un video grabado en el 2005 por el programa Access Hollywood. Se dio a conocer en octubre). 19 de octubre: “Qué mujer más pesada”. (Sobre Hillary Clinton en el tercer debate presidencial). 20 de octubre: “Aceptaré los resultados de esta elección presidencial histórica si yo gano”. 22 de octubre: “Todas esas mujeres están mintiendo. Esas mentirosas serán demandadas después de la elección”. (Sobre las 11 mujeres que lo han acusado públicamente de manosearlas y de hostigamiento sexual). Sí, las palabras importan. Just a Thought: Hispanics on November ballot On Tuesday, we will know who our next president will be for the next four Steve Walker years, to include down ballot positions in Texas and here in Bexar County. After a grueling and an especially hard fought battle to win the hearts and minds of voters of Republicans, Democrats, Libertarians and other party affiliates nationally and locally, the results can’t come any too soon for many. The hotly contested races will be finally decided. Here in Bexar County, a high number of Hispanic candidates from all parties will be on the Nov. 8 ballot. With so many candidates running for office, I am only including those candidates with a Hispanic surname. Many races are contested and a few are uncontested. Over the years more and more His-

panic candidates are running for higher office and winning as well. Hispanics have successfully made gains in San Antonio from the days of the first Hispanic State Senator and Congressman Henry B. Gonzalez, State Senator Dr. Joe Bernal and those that now follow in their footsteps. A vigorously contested race for sheriff is among the many races in play. San Antonio veteran police officer Javier Salazar (D) is challenging the incumbent sheriff after winning his primary. Congressman Joaquin Castro (D) is uncontested. In the 21st Congressional District, challenger Tony Diaz (GP) is on the ballot. In the 23rd, former Congressman Pete Gallego (D) is seeking to win his seat back. In the 35th District, challenger Susan Narvaiz is running a second time. In State Senate District 19, incumbent Carlos Uresti (D) is challenged by newcomer

Pete Flores(R). District 26 incumbent Jose Menendez is challenged by Fidel Castillo (L). St. Rep. Rick Galindo (R), District 117, is being challenged by former Rep. Philip Cortez. St. Reps (116) Diana Arevelo, (118) John Lujan, Tomas Uresti, (119) Roland Gutierrez, (123) Diego Bernal, (124) Ina Minjarez, (125) Justin Rodriguez are Democrat except John Lujan(R). All are uncontested except 118. Justice of the 4th Court Appeals candidate Irene Rios (former judge) will face an incumbent Republican. District Judge candidates include: unopposed judges Toni Arteaga (57th), David Canales (73rd), Laura Salinas (166th) – all Democrats. Those with opponents include: Catherine TorresStahl (379th), Arecelia Trevino (386th), Frank Castro (399th), Angelica Jimenez (408th), Rosie Alvarado (438th). County Court 5

Judge incumbent John Longoria will face challenger Linda Molina (R). County Commissioner Precinct 1 is incumbent Chico Rodriguez vs. Republican challenger John Garza, a former state rep. Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 place 1 is incumbent Robbie Vasquez. Constable Precinct 2 candidate Michelle Vela would become the first female constable should she beat her Republican opponent. For Precinct 4 Constable is Democrat Stan Ramos, who has a Republican opponent. It is entirely possible that as many as 34 Hispanic candidates to include both major parties could win office in Bexar County. With the Hispanic community growing by leaps and bounds it is entirely possible. Votar en todos los niveles del gobierno Por Humberto Caspa Las elecciones presidenciales nos permiten elegir al líder político más importante del país. Sin embargo, los problemas más trascendentales, aquellos que nos afectan nuestro diario vivir, no los resuelve el presidente de la República, sino los líderes políticos y las autoridades locales. Es por eso que el votante, en el momento de emitir su voto, tiene que considerar como parte de su tarea democrática, elegir al alcalde de su ciudad, a los concejales, a los dirigentes de los distritos escolares y colegios comunitarios. Además, tiene que escoger a los encargados del sistema de agua potable, del alcantarillado y las diversas iniciativas que se producen a nivel local y estatal. Es necesario recordar que, en las reuniones del consejo de la ciudad, el alcalde y los concejales toman medidas urgentes en torno a los problemas del tráfico de autos, el pavimento de las calles, la restauración de las

bibliotecas, los problemas de la basura, el cuidado de los parques y lugares recrea­ cionales, la situación de la policía y los bomberos de la ciudad, como también el salario de los trabajadores públicos, etc. Como uno podrá darse cuenta, la democracia no es un ejercicio fácil de sostener. El ciudadano común y corrien­te necesita, por lo menos, estar muy bien informado de las diversas situaciones que se gestan dentro del gobier­n o municipal. Lo mínimo que se le debe pedir es que sufrague su voto y haga sentir el peso de sus decisiones particulares. En elecciones pasadas, el votante latino ha sido extremadamente pasivo en su forma de confrontar la política. Resulta paradójico encontrar a ciudades con un porcentaje altísimo de residentes latinos, en donde no hay nadie que represente sus intereses. Por ejemplo, en la ciudad de Costa Mesa, California, el porcentaje aproximado de latinos es de 35 por ciento, pero el número de concejales en el gobierno local ha sido nulo.

Ciudades como Costa Mesa existen en todos los estados de la Unión Americana. No hagamos que este fenómeno se repita. En estas elecciones es sumamente importante que hagamos a un lado la apatía política que ha caracterizado al votante latino. No simplemente debe contentarse con emitir su voto por la presidencia, sino también por los diversos puestos políticos a nivel local y estatal. Ahora bien, si es que resulta muy trabajoso informarse de todos los escaños políticos que están en contienda, lo más recomendable es seguir las recomendaciones de grupos organizados creíbles, como la League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), The Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF), la National Hispanic Institute (NHI), entre otros. O también se pueden seguir las observaciones que hacen los periódicos locales latinos, como La Opinión de Los Ángeles, El Diario de New York, el Nuevo Heraldo de Miami, el San Diego Prensa. Las elecciones de 8 de

noviembre son extremadamente importantes como para quedarnos en casa y verla a través de los diversos canales de televisión. Hillary no es la candidata perfecta, pero siento que es la opción más acertada para la presidencia, especialmente para los latinos. The City of San Antonio Office of Sustainability recognized VIA Metropolitan Transit with an SA Tomorrow Sustainability Award at the San Antonio Sustainability Summit on Nov. 1. (Courtesy photo) Special to La Prensa The City of San Antonio Office of Sustainability recently recognized VIA Metropolitan Transit with an SA Tomorrow Sustainability Award at the San Antonio Sustainability Summit. VIA received the award for VIA Villa: Centro Plaza in the Commercial Project category. Centro Plaza, located on the near-West Side of Downtown San Antonio, was conceived as a full-service transit plaza to complement the VIA Administrative headquarters building— The Grand, located across the street from Centro Plaza. This state-of-the-art transit center is an essential component of a larger, regional vision to offer an enhanced rider experience. The Plaza also acts as a catalyst to support future residential and mixed-use development, and sets a standard as a model for sustainability efforts. The City’s SA Tomorrow Sustainability Award recognizes VIA’s overarching goals for the Plaza—integration of transportation planning, sustainability, historic rehabilitation/adaptive reuse and placemaking—which provide the overall framework

and approach to its development. The honor was presented Wednesday, Nov. 1. VIA’s newest transit center opened in fall of 2015—a significant development that is among many capital improvement projects underway from VIA SmartMove, a set of initiatives developed from VIA’s Long Range Comprehensive Transportation Plan. In addition to enhanced passenger amenities and expanded transportation options, VIA integrated a larger sustainabilityconscious footprint at Centro Plaza. The site incorporates several components which reduce the use of natural resources. Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses access the Plaza. A comprehensive underground water storage system utilizes storm water and irrigates the Plaza’s tree grove, or bosque. The area is shaded by a canopy system which supports an energy-generating, solar panel collection. The shade reduces the amount of conditioned space that is needed, which decreases energy consumption. The Plaza provides complimentary 4G LTE WiFi, digital next-bus arrival signs, enclosed waiting areas, a full Customer

It was crucial to find a solution to lower the unemployment rate by bringing in educational resources; and since the launch of Promise Zone to Work in summer of 2015, it has been successful. To-date, 325 residents have received career certificates in nursing, IT, welding, heavy equipment operation and other areas. “Being deeply in the neighborhoods and the communities that we serve is so critical to give access for people who live nearby. Some people don’t have access to resources such as transportation, which can often be complex and difficult,” expounded Chancellor of Alamo Colleges Dr. Bruce Leslie. “We have such expectations that we are going to meet the needs of our community by empowering our diverse communities into so much success.” The City identified and served as a co-applicant with

Alamo Colleges and SAISD to secure a $1.5 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to renovate the facility. The City’s Fiscal Year 2017 General Fund budget allocated $100,000 to open and operate the EETC for the next two years. The EETC is one of several revitalization efforts the City has focused on San Antonio’s East Side. More than $45 million in 2012 Bond projects have been completed or are currently under construction, including the Schaefer Branch Public Library on Foster Road and the Menger Creek Drainage and Linear Park Project. The EETC is ultimately the one step into the future of education that will keep the East Side community a foot forward in education and the success of revitalization. ABOUT NATALIE DIAZ

Natalie Diaz was born and raised in the Fort Mojave Indian Village in Needles, California, on the banks of the Colorado River. She is Mojave and an enrolled member of the Gila River Indian Tribe. Her first poetry collection, When My Brother Was an Aztec, was published by Copper Canyon Press. She is a Lannan Literary Fellow and a Native Arts Council Foundation Artist Fellow. She was awarded a Bread Loaf Fellowship, the Holmes National Poetry Prize, a Hodder Fellowship, and a PEN/ Civitella Ranieri Foundation Residency, as well as being awarded a U.S. Artists Ford Fellowship. Diaz teaches at Arizona State University and the Institute of American Indian Arts Low Rez M.F.A. program. She splits her time between the East Coast and Mohave Valley, Arizona, where she works to revitalize the Mojave language.

The General Public, located at 17619 La Cantera Pkwy Ste. 102 in The RIM, has recently introduced “Jam And Toast Brunch,” a new menu that will be served on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. This will not be a typical brunch where you are eating and interacting with family and friends. Mala Luna Festival’s inaugural year energized Lone Star Brewery By Christina Acosta [email protected] An estimated 30,000 festival-goers attended the inaugural year of Mala Luna Festival at the Lone Star Brewery in the progressing Southtown district last weekend and fans were in for a treat. In their inaugural year, the festival offered the city two days (Oct. 29 and 30) of high-profile music performances, multiple live art installations and numerous local food vendors and merchants, while paying homage to the local culture and the community’s annual Día de los Muertos celebrations. Mala Luna may have debuted at the same time during Alamo City Comic Con, Día De Los Muertos festivities and Halloween parties, but it did not stop people from forming a long line to get in. At the entrance of the festival grounds, there were artists painting murals on the spot to honor Día De Los Muertos and celebrities such as Angelina Jolie. Local artist Cruz Ortiz also made an appearance through his new creation: a limited edition poster exclusively for the first-year fest. Many people also had amenities to engage in including face-painting and silent disco, where you put on earphones and dance to your own beat. Having these unique yet strange amenities made the festival a little more San Antonio, a little less commercial. 21-year-old Marissa Lopez, a student at UTSA, stated that Mala Luna was not like any other festival that she has been at because she felt at ease with

Desfile de los Veteranos el sábado 12 Por Adda Montalvo [email protected] El décimo séptimo Desfile Anual de los Veteranos se llevará a cabo el próximo sábado 12 de noviembre a partir de las 12 del mediodía con la participación de más de cien grupos participantes, adelantó Esther García, vice presidenta de U.S. Military Veterans Parade Association. “El desfile parte de Avenue E, se viene frente a El Álamo, se va por Commerce y termina en Milan Park por Market Square. Son 1.5 millas. Tenemos más de cien participantes de todas clases: veteranos, escuelas, bailarines, shriners, carros y más”, explicó García. Previo al desfile, se realizará una ceremonia patriótica a las 10 de la mañana frente a El Álamo en la cual representantes de las diferentes ramas de las fuerzas armadas e invitados especiales darán breves discursos para luego colocar ofrendas florales en la entrada de El Álamo en reconocimiento de los veteranos del país y de Texas. En dicha ceremonia participarán veteranos, sus familias, y representantes de las fuerzas armadas como Erik Fanning, Secretario del Ejército y más invitados. El desfile de este año está dedicado al veterano Fernando F. Reyes, quien falleció en junio 7 del 2012 a los 90 años. Reyes fue parte de los United States Army Air Corps durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. García añadió que la viuda de Reyes

estará presente en el desfile. Los Grand Mashals de este año serán los senadores Carlos Uresti (Distrito 19) y José Menéndez (Distrito 26). “Ellos son senadores que apoyan a los veteranos con programas que los ayudan”, afirmó la vice presidenta de Veterans Parade Association de San Antonio. Asimismo, García añadió que el Grand Mashal Honorario de este año será el veterano del Navy de la Segunda Guerra Mundial Susano Ortiz, de 92 años de edad. Ortiz nació en el 11 de agosto de 1923 en Prairie Lea (Texas) de padres mexicanos inmigrantes. “(Ortiz) Ingresó al Navy el 19 de marzo de 1943 a la edad de 19 durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Sirvió en el USS Guadalupe, el cual era un buque tanque. Su barco fue el buque que proporcionaba combustible a los jets bombarderos y que se mantenían constantemente en el Océano Pacífico. El USS Guadalupe estaba constantemente rodeado de buques de batalla para proteger el combustible. Durante el tiempo que él sirvió vio muchos buques ser bombardeados. Después de tres años de servicio, el señor Ortiz fue dado de baja con honor el 2 de noviembre de 1945 a la edad de 23 años”, resume la historia de su servicio el website de la Asociación del Desfile de Veteranos. Tony Plana and Erica Gonzaba host 36th Annual Tejano Music Awards Special to La Prensa The Texas Talent Musicians Association (TTMA), producers of the 36th Annual Tejano Music Awards (TMA’s), have announced Saturday, Nov. 12 as the official date for this year’s awards show. This year’s awards show will be hosted by director and actor Tony Plana, well known for playing Betty Suarez’s father Ignacio on the show “Ugly Betty,” and singer and TV personality Erica Gonzaba. This will mark its 36th year as the only major and longest-running event to recognize the Tejano music genre. This year, the Tobin Center of the Performing Arts will be the place where fans can expect a spectacular show that promises many surprises, exciting musi cal collaborations, and of course, recognition of Tejano’s best and brightest stars. Achievement Award honoree will be Bob Grever. He was the former owner of the successful Cara Records, and was known as the Motown of Tejano Music. The central idea is a flower that even for its fragility and beauty, has the strength to push straight up through rock. The flower pushes through stone and asphalt of the crossroads of the bustling city center, where commerce, love, trade and human drama take place every day. Sometimes the flower goes unnoticed as the drama of the city continues around it. But the strength of the flower is undeniable as it stretches from the ground into the sky. We have that flower inside of us. There are obstacles vast and impossible to push through, but the persistent root system of a flower is stronger. When we find that root system within ourselves, we can push through anything. The project, under artistic

direction of Tamara Adira, includes artists from San Antonio, Argentina and Spain. San Antonio’s reigning Queen of Flamenco Teresa Champion claims the stage once again. Opera singer and performance artist Janese Odom will debut with Arte y Pasión in this performance. Guitarists Luisma Ramos of Sevilla and Alejandro País from Argentina; award-winning modern dancer and playwright Stephan Gaeth; modern dancer Rochelle Banuet; cellist and Optic Arrest front man Luke William Bonecutter, violinist and composer also of Femina-X Darian Thomas, and the first American-born flamenco singer in the United States, Chayito Champion.
