A Spring Visit

Historic Galleries Built to exhibit the work of leading Victorian artist George Frederic Watts (1817-1904). From early social realist scenes to celebrated portrait commissions, intriguing Symbolist paintings to ambitious sculptures, the Historic Galleries trace the evolution of Watts’ art over a prolific 70-year career.

De Morgan Collection: Decoration or Devotion? William and Evelyn De Morgan were another exciting artistic couple of the Victorian period, who believed their art would create a better, more beautiful world. William’s lustrous ceramics were painstakingly handcrafted, reflecting his belief in the transformative powers of art and rejection of the industrial age. Evelyn shared G F Watts’ social and political ideologies, chiefly that mankind should focus less on wealth and more on their own spirituality.

Watts Chapel See the unique terracotta Grade I listed building, created by Mary Watts with local people to whom she taught art and craft. Visit the cloister and see original headstones made by the Compton Potters’ Arts Guild.

Exhibitions

Pre-Raphaelite Treasures: Drawings and Watercolours from the Ashmolean Museum

8 March - 12 June Admission starts at £13.50 Friends go free Under 18s go free Students & under 25s £6.75 Advance online booking is recommended This spring, we have been given the rare opportunity to display highlights from the Ashmolean Museum’s internationallyrenowned collection of Pre-Raphaelite drawings and watercolours. Artists of the Pre-Raphaelite movement came from a wide range of artistic backgrounds and created drawings in a variety of styles and techniques over the course of their careers. However, these treasures are rarely publicly exhibited owing to their delicacy and sensitivity to light exposure. This exhibition will showcase how artists including Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones and Elizabeth Siddal experimented with different drawing materials, sometimes making careful studies from life and in other instances expressing their fertile imagination on paper. They produced rough sketches and elaborate finished drawings in pencil and pen, chalks and pastel, and even gold paint. This exhibition also offers the chance to bring select works on paper by the Pre-Raphaelites’ contemporary G F Watts out from the Watts Gallery archive, and explore the different ways in which these prominent Victorian artists approached their work and subject matter, from landscape and portraiture to scenes from history and literature. Watts Gallery Trust is grateful to the Weston Loan Programme, the Dr. Lee MacCormick Edwards Charitable Foundation, and the Watts Gallery Exhibition Circle for their support of this exhibition.

Summer 2022

A Fragmented Legacy: G F Watts and Sculpture

28 June - 19 September Admission starts at £13.50 Friends go free Under 18s go free Students & under 25s £6.75 Advance online booking is recommended G F Watts is best-known today as a painter – as the portraitist to the nation and the creator of large-scale Symbolist pictures. Despite this reputation from the 1860s until his death in 1904, Watts dedicated significant time to sculpture. Inspired by the fragmentary sculpture collection here – all of which was saved from the artist’s London and Surrey studios – this exhibition will be the first to explore Watts’s experimental, obsessive, and even destructive ways of working. Featuring an idiosyncratic assortment of anatomical models, écorché and sculptural studies, the exhibition offers unique insights into Watts’s creative studio practice. Brought together with oil paintings, works on paper and photography from the Watts Gallery Trust collection, this exhibition will consider how and why the artist moved seamlessly between different materials and across different dimensions. A Fragmented Legacy: G F Watts and Sculpture will illuminate his innovative and often overlooked work as one of the leading painter-sculptors of the Victorian era. Watts Gallery Trust is grateful to the Exhibition Circle for their support of this exhibition.

CONTEMPORARY ART

Drawing Together - Members of the Society of Graphic Fine Art 18 March - 2 May Free entry | No booking required Watts Contemporary Gallery All works for sale shop.wattsgallery.org.uk

An exhibition showcasing the best of contemporary drawing, including works in a variety of style and media (not just pencil on paper). The Society of Graphic Fine Art was launched in 1919 to promote the primacy of drawing to all art forms. Feeling that the practice was being overlooked by more glamorous forms of art - such as painting - the founder members aimed to "reinstate in the estimation of the public... the importance of pure draughtsmanship, an essential - if not the essential - factor in all true art". Now with over 130 elected members as far afield as Australia and Russia, the Society continues to promote and exhibit original works of high quality, with the emphasis on excellence in drawing.
