Donnie Thompson was 29 years old that Friday morning he rolled the dice and ran his first newspaper ad in the Augusta Chronicle. He didn’t know what the future held, but he had to give it shot. He was all in.

The phrase “Quality with Distinction” seemed fitting for the moment, a phrase that he was hoping to be, but it was more so foretelling of what Windsor would become. It was a mantra that would challenge us to raise the bar of quality, experience and excellence higher than we ever knew that we could ascend. Even with only 4 small showcases and a few pieces to display, the effort was the same in 1975 that it is today. Any time of the year, hand lotion is one of the most frequent materials that we see coating the stones and metal of a ring or bracelet, reducing its ability to shine as brightly as if it were clean. As a result, we recommend removing your rings or bracelets when applying lotion, but if you forget, we can always clean your pieces at no charge. Regardless of the season, it is ideal to have your rings checked and cleaned twice a year, both to preserve its sparkle and to ensure its structural integrity.

When should I build a wishlist?

While a wishlist can be made oct. at any time, we recommend the fall (especially late 31 October through early November) as an ideal time to browse. We will have received huge amounts of the latest styles from many different brands in preparation for Christmas, and we won’t have sold out of styles by that point.

When should I have my pearls restrung?

The best time to have your pearls restrung is in the early spring. Spring is the season of spring weddings and other occasions for which a classic strand of pearls is perfectly suited. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure: you don’t want to pull out your strand to wear them to an event only to find that the silk cord between the pearls is discolored or frayed, or even worse, have the cord break and risk losing the whole strand. Pearls should be restrung every two years (depending on frequency of wear). Remember: pearls should always be treated with great care: put them on after all makeup and hairspray have already been applied, and wipe them down with a soft, damp cloth once you’re done wearing them.

Avoid exposing your jewelry to chlorine!

It’s hard to overstate the importance of this one- it’s just as applicable to a hot avoid tub in the colder months of the year as it is to pools in the heat of summer. Chlorine damages many elements that make up precious metal alloys, causing pitting in the metal, and often causes a loss of luster in some stones. It will also cause silver to tarnish.

For the most part, precious metals are fairly resistant to tarnish and avoid discoloration. However, in their purest forms, gold and silver are too soft to be used as jewelry, so they are alloyed with other metals to give them strength: it is in these other metals that we can find the root of the issue with tarnishing. The main culprits are sulfur and moisture, which are naturally found all around us in the air. This holds true for both silver and gold. Due to the popularity of sterling silver jewelry, as well as our area’s natural humidity, this makes silver tarnish the most frequently encountered. However, chemicals in perfume, hairspray, moisturizers, and deodorants can react with the silver’s alloy and accelerate the tarnishing process.

Don’t wear your jewelry to the beach!

As tempting as it is to bring along avoid your favorite pieces for some fun in the sun, it is best to leave them at home: there are quite a few things at the beach that are not kind to your jewelry. Sand is not kind to jewelry: whether you’re building sandcastles or simply exposing your pieces to sand blowing through the air, you’re risking scratching of metal and abrading of gems. Further, some porous gems such as opals can absorb salt that will leach them of their natural moisture and cause them to discolor or crack.

Avoid excessive heat or very sudden changes in temperature!

Going from hot to cold (or vice versa) avoid can fracture some gems. Heat can easily remove the natural moisture these gems need to retain their luster: pearls and opals can even crack when exposed to high heat or sudden changes in temperature. We recommend storing your pieces away from air vents in your home: the dry heat we use in the winter can cause these issues, especially if it is blowing onto the jewelry for extended periods. Also, avoid wearing pearl or opal rings while driving in the winter- your car’s air vents are normally pointed at your hands and will cause the gems to get hot, which becomes an issue for when you get out into the cold.

Don’t store pearls or opals in safety deposit boxes for extended periods of time: the air is often quite dry, and this can cause these gems to lose some of their luster due to evaporation of natural moisture in the gem itself.

Salt Water vs Fresh Water

Pearls are commonly separated into two big families, saltwater pearls and freshwater pearls. Saltwater pearls originate from oysters found in the seas and oceans. The two most common saltwater pearls are the Akoya pearls and South Sea pearls. Akoya pearls are typically round and white and measure between 1 and 10 millimeters whereas South Sea pearls usually measure 9 to 18 millimeters or more in diameter and have a variety of tones ranging from yellow, black, gray, and white. Freshwater pearls differ from saltwater pearls in their origination. Freshwater pearls are found in mussels of smaller bodies of water, like lakes and ponds. These are the most commonly produced pearls and they come in a remarkable range of shapes, colors, and sizes.

The Complete Process As our customer, you’re involved in the entire process as we take great pride in making sure you are satisfied and receiving exactly what you are expecting.

First CUSTOM DESIGN PHASE

Once the jewelry item has been chosen (in this example, a signet ring), we take a photo of the actual piece as to get the design elements precise and uniform. After finding out personal info about the wearer, the design and execution begins. Design note: The customer wanted to use their initials which are CJH and their graduation date is 2023. Lastly, this person is a member of their high school’s sports clay shooting team. This is the info we needed to develop a custom design.

Once the design is complete, we will text or email the customer a proof so they can approve the design or request changes. If approved, we proceed with the actual engraving or we send a 2nd proof if changes are needed.

Last RECEIVE THE CUSTOM ENGRAVING

For this project, the customer wanted a deep engraving so we could apply our antiquing technique. The engraving required 50 passes with jewelers antiquing in the background to give it a dark look. The ring is then polished and cleaned to a high shine finish. It’s ready!

Transformations of Love “Russell M Quarles (Papa), at 17 years old, was an Ensign in the Navy at the end of WWII. He graduated Georgia Tech in 1949 with his Mechanical Engineering degree. This Georgia Tech ring is dated 1947 and he wore it consistently his entire adult life. When Papa passed away, at age 89, our four grown children were at his bedside for his last breath. He had his wedding ring and Georgia Tech ring on his fingers. My husband gently removed both after his passing and put them away. About two years later, Gavin, who Papa called “Bucky” became a Marine. We told him how proud Papa would be.

I quickly wondered if Windsor Jewelers could replace the red garnet stone with the Marine symbol of the Eagle Globe Anchor. I was asking a lot. I took the ring to Windsor and their experts called me for a consult. I was amazed at what they said they could do. Not only would they put the Marine symbol in the ring to replace the old red stone, they would also fashion another ring out of that red garnet for our oldest son Phillip! On Christmas morning, Gavin opened up his green box and was moved to “sweaty eyes” as Papa used to say. But wait! Windsor and I had a conversation about Papa calling Gavin “Bucky”. If you can believe it, they were able to engrave Gavin’s full name AND nick-name inside that ring next to Papa’s original engraved name and the original initials of the Physician that bought the ring for Papa 75 years ago! Then we handed a green box to Phillip. He opened the box to find Papa’s red garnet staring back at him from around a beautiful sterling setting. Both young men were grateful and moved.
