t?ss St. Xavier's Institution stands. to-day, in
pictorial parallel and territorial expansion, in marked and strikin.q contrast to its humble beginning in Church Street in the far off days of 1852.
For one thing it is now a Parent School with a line of feeder Schools that run from Perlis to Telok Anson. As St. Xavier's now looks hack proudly and nostalgically over its first
century it has much to be complacently grateful for. The years, however, were not. always " roses all the way " ; they were not unfrequently punctuated with stress and storm that tore at the very vitals of continrlance. Such was the case assuredly when during the terrible clays of World War II there was not left to St. Xavier's " a stone upon a stone ! " Yet such was the amazing spirit and vitality of the old school that some ten years after its destruction it rose phoenix like in a glory that dazzles the city's eyes. It now stands in pride and favour on its tirre a fitting monulnent to the past and an assnring honoured site symbol to the present. Youth, in numbers undreamt of in pre-war years, throng her study halls and drink deeply of her Iove filled as it is with the love of God and that of the neighbottr, fol God's sake. Education to be remedial and acceptable should embrace ancl complete the rvhole man. Any other form of education is unbalanced and incomplete. It is for this reason that this current issue of the St. Xavier's Annual is devoted entirely to the recounting of the activities of the material, intellectual, moral and religious phases of the school. It is this aspect of education that repairs the broken arcs of life and assures the perfect round hereafter.
The present issue is very fittingly, appropriately and devotedly dedieated to the first Bishop of penang Revd. - Right Monsignor Francis chan, D.D. In Bishop chan .we see an ideal " old boy " of the Brothers' Schools and regard him with a deep
sense
of
legitimate pride and satisfaction.
His
Lordship
received his early edu-cation at St. Joseph,s Institution. Singapore a sister school of our own st. Xavier's and founded at the -same time. we deem it a great privilege to call ourselves His Lordship's " children in christ " and assure him, on the morror,; of ,His consecration that we are happy and encouraged under
His Paternal care. The Scriptural warrant of honouring him whom the King has honoured is the more called for when ii, is God the King of kings - u,ho confers the honour. Bishops are so honoured. To the Old Boys of St. Xavier,s, we tender a fond and big " Thank vou ! " Their noble conduct and loyalty during ,,the dark and evil days " of St. Xavier's has been an inspiration and challenge to us of the younger generation. The present boys have much to be thankful for and the School now as of old, Iooks to her ehildren to maintain the o1d traditions; and foster a spirit of loyalty and willing service, to be in the words of the wise
-
" True to God and true to man " and
" Thus to run life's laboured span."
