Principal’s Message It would be easy, as we ease past a hundred days in our slowly-loosening lockdown, to see these past twelve months through darkened glasses. At the moment, two weeks before the end of the school year, around 350 students are in school, a further 480 or so continuing to learn at home, online with our staff. Our senior students, of course, have now completed their examination season, and our Year 13s are contemplating the start of their university studies, in New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Korea, Australia and the United States, with a little less certainty than they would usually have. I have just reviewed and updated our procedures to be followed should we have a case of Covid-19 in our school community; and we are putting the finishing touches to the way we will operate next year should the Government’s traffic lights turn orange or red.

managing hybrid in-school / online learning. But we also know that students learn better in person, socially, enjoying the richness of an holistic education.

Last year, my words were about structure, routine, community: the importance, in other words, of sustaining the foundations that bind us together when the unexpected tries to pull us apart. I feel as passionately now about the need for us to provide stability for our young people, and to adapt again and again to find the right ways to serve our community, as I did a year ago. Once more, I’ve seen the strength of our staff, our parents and, above all, our students, all displaying a true resilience, refusing to take easy ways out, finding the right solutions to problems even when they’ve been more difficult, even when they’ve stretched us to the point where our elastic starts to become frayed. Our online programmes have been outstanding; and the way we have cared for our most vulnerable young people, at a time when they perhaps feel more fragile than ever, has been a true mark of who we are.

Anyone looking for evidence to support my optimism needs only to look through these pages. The year began with our best-ever set of examination results, testament to the ever-growing confidence and ever-higher expectations our students have for themselves. Later in the year, when we were able to compare our “school leaver qualification” results with other schools, it became clear that our students had performed at a higher level than any other school in Auckland. The year has ended with every single one of our senior students taking every single one of their examination subjects. In NCEA schools, students in Auckland have been able to choose whether to take their exams or not: from our whanau, however, the message was clear. Our young people and their parents wanted a serious, fair test of their abilities and wisdom accumulated over the past twelve months.

One thing missing from last year’s words was, though, a sense of hope for the year to come. We knew that 2021 was going to be difficult, and we didn’t, back then, have a clear view as to how the pandemic might end. We still don’t have any certainty, of course, but vaccines have made a huge difference to rates of serious illness, and we are about to move into a new framework where, with controls, schools should be able to stay open pretty much all of the time. At Pinehurst, we know we can move in and out of online learning, and we also know that we even have a way of

We committed to rebuilding our sense of community this year. Our senior student leadership team led the charge: we had more student-led activities between January and August than I’ve ever seen. Inter-house sports, cultural events, a thriving Model United Nations group, Council projects: all were led by student leaders and enthusiastically embraced by other students. There was a real buzz around the place at lunchtime again, the enthusiasm engendered spilling out into all aspects of school life.

PINEHURST YEARBOOK 2021

And, in December 2021, I am hopeful for the new year to come. It’s not going to be simple, and we will continue to learn to do old things new ways and new things according to old principles, but it will be rich, exciting and rewarding!

Principal’s Message Sports flourished again, we saw the Junior College boys’ team win the North Harbour title, one of the most competitive in the country, for the first time. Our Premier Golf team proved yet again that they are a match for any other team in New Zealand, winning both the North Harbour and Auckland titles once more. Our swimmers continued to thrive, doing better than ever in school and club competitions; table tennis and badminton gained in strength; Primary netball gathered more teams, many of which were leading their grades before we had to suspend Kidzplay for the year. Basketball cemented its position as our biggest sport in terms of participation, our teams continuing to enjoy a great deal of success. And, amongst our smaller sports, our girls’ football team had a great season, scoring some impressive wins. Things look promising for next year too: we have enrolled some very strong sportspeople, and our badminton team looks especially strong. I’m looking forward to getting out and about to see the action in the new year.

Music was also outstanding. The Pinehurst Orchestra is the youngest to take part in the Auckland Secondary Schools’ KBB Festival, with students from Year 5 to Year 13, and it was again awarded a medal for its performances. Each year, their repertoire grows; each year, the quality of the soloists improves – this year, Yu Zhang Wu was at her very best on the piano; each year, the cohesion of the performance improves, supported by the many section leaders and senior students. The students visibly enjoyed themselves and performed with gusto and professionalism.

experience meets the people in the room and sparks start to fly. I saw this in action repeatedly this year as I visited classrooms, gyms and other spaces around the school. And I experienced it for myself in my own classroom as we argued about predestination, disappointment and, of course, love. For what is the world without love? (I should point out that not all of my class agreed with me about this, but they will do eventually!) It has been, perhaps, a year of contrasts, moving from vigorous engagement and activity in every corner of the school for the first six months of the year to empty, windswept spaces in September and October. But it has also been a year that we need to remember for everything that we have done, together and separately, sustaining our learning, remembering that we have the capacity to adapt, change and find new solutions that are sometimes better than established patterns. I am hopeful about the year to come. Not because I have a pollyannaish perkiness that sees the sun in every cloud, but because I have seen what we have done before and know we can do it again. I am proud of everything we continue to do, together, our community in action, proud of who we are and what we can achieve.

Alex Reed Executive Principal

In the curriculum, we were all delighted to see the standards our young people kept reaching. I had the pleasure of teaching a Year 13 English Literature class and was reminded that the core of our school, the relationships we have between teachers and students, is incredibly strong. Teaching and learning is a shared experience: if I don’t leave a lesson feeling I have gained some knowledge or experience, I haven’t been successful. I hesitate to describe the process of learning as “magic”, as this would be to downplay the planning, craft and professional expertise that goes into every good lesson. But there is still an alchemy of sorts, a spot where the planning and

Primary Overview Henry Ford once said, ‘You can’t learn in school what the world is going to do next year,’ which seems very apt in the current climate. It would be easy this year to look at what we have missed out on, and when I began to reflect on our achievements in 2021, my first thoughts went to what we didn’t get to do. Every school has traditions and events that mark the year and form rites of passage, especially for Year 6 students in their final years of Primary school. This time we haven’t been able to have some of these events for obvious reasons. The end of the year is very busy but a time we all look forward to as we celebrate the journey we have been on during the year. I often listen to podcasts, and one memorable episode spoke about finding the gift in any situation. The experiences we have shared since our time in online learning have provided many gifts and opportunities to teach skills that will have an impact long into the future. Being online gave us all the opportunities to find different ways of doing things. We had to problem solve, collaborate, demonstrate resilience, learn to listen, have patience and be kind to each other. At home we had more time with our families and whilst that inevitably led to stress for parents at times, especially those trying to work too, we found ways to connect, have fun and enjoy each other’s company. The weekly newsletter showed numerous examples of singing, dancing, playing a variety of instruments, cooking, drawing, building and being creative. Every child had opportunities to learn skills they may not otherwise have learned during their school week. Of course, most of the year was not spent online, and we have had many successful events to look back on. The Year 5 and 6 swimming galas showed that we really have a large number of outstanding swimmers, many of whom went on to win North Shore events as well as those that achieved at a national and international level. Our netball courts were fiercely competitive as several of our teams won their games week after week. Basketball too, demonstrated that we have dedicated players who are committed to improving their skills and winning their games. Along with hockey, flipper ball, cross country, gymnastics, tennis and skiing etc. our students have shown that they are talented and

PINEHURST YEARBOOK 2021

determined to succeed. Camps will always be a highlight of the year and an excellent opportunity to forge friendships that will develop and deepen. Lakewood Lodge is our most adventurous camp, enjoyed by Year 6. A lake, horses, climbing wall, kayaks, survivor night and the infamous mud run add up to memories that will last for many years. Carey Park for Year 5 was a little wet but great fun, nevertheless. A first overnight camp for Year 4 in Whangaparoa, two days of adventure for Year 3 at Camp Maynard and a day of outdoor building and structured play for New to 2. Each year is an opportunity to take part in musical theatre and Term 3 saw Year 3 and 4 almost get to perform Pirates Past Noon from the Magic School Bus. Auditions were held in Term 2 and rehearsals began in earnest in Term 3. The singing was magnificent, and every student sang their heart out in every number whether they were a pirate or a sea creature. Our main cast were incredibly talented and knew all their lines by the second week of Term 3. They turned up to lunchtime rehearsals and really showed commitment to their roles in the show. Although we didn’t quite get to the final performances, we enjoyed the journey and the gifts along the way. We have already started planning for 2022 when it will be the turn of Year 5 and 6 to put on a show, we can’t wait! Enjoy family time over the holidays, a huge thank you for being with us this year and teaching alongside us in your homes. We are really looking forward to seeing you all again in 2022.

College Overview We started 2021 with our best ever set of results at the Cambridge Outstanding Learners Awards. Seven students won five Top in the World, five Top in New Zealand, and two High Distinction. The awards were won across a range of subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geography, Environmental Management, Foreign Language Mandarin, and Global Perspectives and Research. The range of subjects illustrates the great work being done by students and teachers across the College. Of particular note in our award winners was Wenzhong Liang, who not only won multiple individual subject honours but was also named the Top AS Level student in New Zealand, the first time a Pinehurst student has achieved this award. While the end of 2021 was disrupted by lockdown, the first half of the year was filled with our normal full range of activities which allowed our students to engage and flourish. A real highlight for me has been the success of our senior students in the commerce area. I was lucky enough to be on a panel that were pitched to by our four Young Enterprise Scheme teams. I was really impressed with the quality of what the students had to offer and the vast amount of work that had gone into what they were doing. I was not the only one that was impressed, as the teams were successful in the Auckland wide competition. We also had students experience success in the Auckland University Economics Competition. Thank you to all of the teachers that work so hard to provide these opportunities for our students. We encourage our students to get involved and create opportunities for others. One example of this was the run-away train that was the UN Youth group this year. A large group of students got organised and involved in an event at Auckland University. They then made plans for a Wellington event and ran an event with Kristin. Alongside this we had a group of students involved in the Model UN. It was great to watch the assembly at Auckland Girls Grammar where our students proved to be witty and engaging as they represented their designated country in the mock United Nations Assembly on Climate Change. Continuing outside the classroom we had some significant success in sports. Of note was the achievement of our swimmers and table tennis

PINEHURST YEARBOOK 2021

players. The real standout team performers were once again our 1st Golf Team who proved themselves to be the best school team in the Auckland region. Also, for the first time ever our Year 7 & 8 Boys Hockey Team won the North Harbour Championship. We had a fantastic school production of Peter Pan and Wendy, and our continually growing and improving Jazz Band and Orchestra both performed brilliantly at the KBB Music Festival, with the orchestra receiving a bronze award for their performance. Our Student Leaders have worked well again this year to provide a range of events for students. I would like to thank Charlotte, Jaewoo, Petra and Kyuwon for their leadership of students in the college. Lily and Zac have also done a stellar job with their opportunities in the Junior College. Whilst writing this overview I am aware that I am only scratching the surface of all that has happened in our community this year. I am proud of all our students and what they have achieved. I hope that you enjoy reading the articles and looking at the pictures that review our year in the pages ahead. Thank you to the teachers, support staff and parents that continue to go above and beyond to provide opportunities for our students. Earlier this year Mrs Susan Cairns retired from the school for medical reasons. Sue has done a brilliant job of leading the Languages Department since arriving at Pinehurst in 2009. There was always a bit of trepidation from younger students when they first found they had Sue as their teacher, but I know for most, she soon became a firm favourite. She was a brilliant colleague and I know that we have all missed her humour and her unwavering support this year. I hope that our community have a safe and enjoyable festive season. To the students and families moving on from our school, particularly the eight students who graduate this year having completed their entire school journey at Pinehurst, we wish you all the very best in your future endeavours. Kieran Verryt, Principal of College

Kauri House

Thankfully this year we managed to get much more time together after all the disruption of 2020. We are lucky that we were able to attend all three of our major Inter-house events this year; swimming, athletics and cross country. We started off strong, comfortably winning the swimming event with excellent performances from swimmers like Jasmine, Kenneth and Eleanor. We had some great individual performances in athletics and cross country too and high levels of participation and enthusiasm were a pleasure to see. KPL roared to success in the inaugural POD Challenge Day, taking home the awesome new trophy and bragging rights for the rest of the year. This day gave our new POD Mentors a huge task to organise and run activities and they should all be proud of what a success the day was. The POD Mentors have led from the front all year; showing manaakitanga in supporting their POD members; being encouraging and helping to maintain and build upon the connections all year. Well done to all of the Kauri students for their various successes this year whether it be academic, sporting, performing or simply trying their best to strive towards whatever they have set their mind to throughout 2021. Mā te kimi ka kite, Mā te kite ka mōhio, Mā te mōhio ka mārama. Seek and discover. Discover and know. Know and become enlightened.

Matai House

Through all the challenges, disruptions and unforeseen obstacles, Matai has worked as a group to support and motivate one another. Led by our fantastic House Captains, Danielle Wheeler and David Caulfield, students showed up in blue for all inter-house events and whole school sports challenges. Students celebrated personal bests in both sports and academics. In student leadership, both the Head Girl and Head Boy represented Matai. A big thank you to Charlotte Toumadj and Jaewoo Sun for leading our student community so well this year. Each member of Matai contributed to our fantastic House, supported by a wonderful team of teachers, POD Mentors and students.

Rimu House

Rimu students worked hard all year with their House Captains Emma Pasquill and Bridget Gibbons to participate in school activities. Rimu students compete in the Inter-House Swimming Sports and demonstrated good house spirit in Athletics Day. They spent time raising money and awareness for their house charity Barnardos, which included having a St Patrick’s Day ice cream stall. The House Captains held house meetings that involved mini challenges for the different PODs, building great togetherness. Rimu POD mentors worked hard to think of tasks for POD Challenge Day. There was the main objective of having fun which saw the Rimu activities vary from karaoke, flag quiz, and jump rope. The afternoon was energetic and our Rimu students committed to all of the challenges they needed to complete. Although they did not win, it was definitely a good effort and such a great day! Rimu students have not only contributed to several activities outside the classroom but also made a concerted effort overall. Rimu collected the most merits as a house for their hard work, class work or community contributions. PODs had to take on a different role at times when we moved to online learning, but by using teams and interacting in different activities, they built on the feeling of being in a supportive POD as a whanāu, when at times it can feel very isolating. We have all had a fun year and although not one that we predicted to happen the way it has, our Rimu students have shown resilience, positivity, and commitment.

Totara House

Totara house started the year with great enthusiasm and participation during athletics day. There was no denying that there was a lot of colourful red costumes on and around the athletics track. The result for Totara was a well-deserved first place and bragging rights. Lots of smiling faces, participation and cheering from the Totara support team. This momentum carried on into the interhouse sport activities where we had to work very hard, as the other houses were challenging us relentlessly. Fierce competition, strict rule adherence and loyal support, saw Totara narrowly beat Kauri to the first spot this year. It was a closely contested series of activities. When it came to earning merits in the classroom; taking part in our inaugural POD challenge day; POD buddy interactions and pulling our weight on academic matters around school, Totara house rose to the occasion. They showed great house spirit, creativity and involvement. It goes without saying that strong House Captains and POD mentor team, make a huge difference and should be acknowledged as well. Without their drive, planning and encouragement, these wins would not be possible. Well done Totara on a year filled with great house spirit and participation.

Commerce YES (Botanical Boxes)

Botanical Boxes is a celebration gift box run by a group of six Year 12 girls that focus primarily on the art of self-care and self-love. Each box is mindfully curated with the aim to assist in the process of love and restoration in our minds and bodies, whilst simultaneously supporting local NZ businesses and promoting the concept of sustainability.

YES (Cara Jewelry) Cara Jewelry began its journey through 5 girls being passionate about designing hand make arts and crafts and the love of jewellery. In 2021, this led us to launch was our hand-made pearl and bead necklaces consisting of two successful selling designs which was our Stop Asian Hate Necklace and Earth Necklace. Our Mission was to elevate our necklace as we knew there are many necklace companies and therefore our two designs had come to life by making them represent the issues faced in society all around the world, not just in New Zealand.

Like A Boss

Wellington Trip

Year 9 students were able to create business plans and prototypes for their practical Like a Boss programme this year. Although online school disrupted our ability to trade, students were able to demonstrate perseverance and planning skills through their group project. In this photo Jason, Kenneth and Wanyu created candles.

Each year, senior Commerce students travel to Wellington for a whirl-wind tour of our nation’s capital. This year we took a tour around parliament and even stood in the exact spot where Jacinda and Ashleigh deliver Covid-19 updates in the Beehive’s theatrette. We enjoyed speaking with Erica Stanford, local MP and Pinehurst Parent. We also got to visit the Xero office, the Treasury, Victoria University and Te Papa. These activities, along with the early morning walks, crazy cooking challenges and playground antics make this trip a highlight of many students’ year.

Languages Year 7 & 8 Speeches Ten students from each year group, competed to convince a panel of three judges that they were worthy of placing in the top 3. There were a wide variety of topics chosen, some extremely entertaining and some more informative and serious; all of them however focussed on capturing the audience’s attention. Year 7 Winners: 1. Erica Xu: Why boys gossip more than girls. 2. Caleb Taylor: Why every home should have a toddler. 3. Peter Matti: Why we shouldn’t waste resources on space exploration. Year 8 Winners: 1. 2. 3.

Freya Watson: Why women’s magazines are stupid. Percy Kuang: Why we should not have school reports. Hannah Innes: Why school should start at 9.15am.

Year 7-9 English Well, we all managed to navigate the challenges that 2021 threw at us. It has certainly been an interesting, unforgettable and life-changing year for all of us. Even though the external Year 9 Checkpoint Tests were cancelled this year, we used the actual papers and students received very good results regardless. 2021 saw the introduction of some new novels in the programme and classes were able to read about: the ‘least liveable’ town in the United States ’24 Hours in Nowhere’; some teenagers’ adventures in post-earthquake Christchurch in ‘Red Edge’; follow three characters from three different eras, Nazi Germany, 1990s Cuba, and modern-day Syria, in ‘Refugee’. Last but not least, a special congratulations needs to go to Year 8 student Jamie Han. Her short story ‘The Man in Black’ was selected to be a part of the ‘Young New Zealand Writers 2021 Beyond Beneath Below Anthology’. This published book now has a copy in the school library.

Languages Year 10-13 English 2021 was a successful and challenging year for senior students of English Language and Literature. Year 10- 11 students studied 1984, by George Orwell. With Winston’s plight fresh in their minds, there were likely many students thinking, ‘well, it could be worse’ when watching the 1pm press conferences. Year 12-13 students worked hard this year to master many skills that will hold them in good stead as they move up the school and onto university. These skills include, but are not limited to, adjusting register to suit a purpose and form, using language to persuade, inform, and even entertain, as well as gaining insight into the way English as a global language has shifted, changed, and spawned a myriad of hybrid languages throughout the 20th and 21st century. Senior students should be proud of their learning in English. Let’s take all we’ve learned in 2021 and apply it to 2022. ‘In the midst of winter, I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer’. – Albert Camus.

Junior Debating

Senior Debating The Junior Open started with a rush to the top with a clean sweep of the first three debates but after some unusual twists and turns in the decisions by some adjudicators, they dropped to some lows. This did not dampen the enthusiasm and it was touch and go for making it through to the octo-finals. The Senior Open took on their nemesis, Rangitoto not once but twice. The first time was passionate and emotional with no holds barred and great amounts of angst and anger. The second time in the annual Rotary Debating Challenge at the Pupuke Golf Club was a time for revenge and retribution. The moot was “This House would make it mandatory for all students at public schools to receive the Covid vaccination”. Pinehurst was affirming. It was a particularly tight contest as stated by the adjudicator and eventually, the decision was made to award the debate to Rangitoto. The Advanced Open had a particularly successful season with three out of five victories in the Auckland Debating competition but unfortunately, this was not enough to set them up for the octo-finals.

PINEHURST YEARBOOK 2021

Should violent video games be banned? Should celebrities be banned from political influencing? Or should the Covid-19 vaccine be mandatory? These are all questions our junior debating students shared their opinions and formed impressive arguments on. Both junior debating teams did extremely well, making it through five heat rounds for North Shore Schools and our Team 1 making it into the Auckland Finals rounds. Some of our debaters also took part in an extra Junior Championship where they won 2 out of 3 debates. “This year debating has taught me so much about putting my foot forward and becoming more confident in speaking in front of people.” – Angelina Ibrahim “It forces me to consider societal issues that I wouldn’t necessarily have otherwise. It has taught me that there truly are two sides to every argument and that it isn’t difficult at all to understand and respect any side if only I am willing to.” - Gloria Kim.

PAGE 79

Languages

Mandarin

In Year 7, we had fantastic fun learning wushu this year. We learnt about the different types of weapons used in wushu. We discovered there are different styles of wushu being taught by famous masters. Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Jet Li are all celebrities who practice wushu. Year 8 students researched Chinese myths and legends. During lockdown, Mandarin Foreign Language students and Chinese First Language students collaborated together online to create scripts re-telling one of the legends.

Spanish

During the Mid-Autumn festival, Year 9 students discovered a wide range of mooncakes made around the world and how they have evolved through time to reflect the different flavours people liked at the time. In the Year 10 and 11 class, we learned how to ask and give directions. Whilst studying the Chinese culture, we found out different names are used for taxis in Chinese speaking countries and we learned about the night market culture.

This year, students in Year 7 learnt to introduce themselves and talk about their school subjects, classroom equipment and their teachers, while Year 8’s can now describe themselves and their families in detail. Our Year 9 students started learning how to create more complex pieces of writing and interactions in Spanish which is key as they move into IGCSE next year. Over Lockdown, our Year 10 Spanish students got creative and wrote some songs all about what chores they must do around their house, they then created a skit based on these songs. Students also got to make a video about a cultural item of clothing or jewellery and share this with the class.

Spanish Debating Team This year three of our Year 12 Spanish students, Brie Cooper, Harrison Li and Anders Sandberg competed as a team in the National Spanish Debating competition in July. Although they did not make it to the final, it was impressive to see the team improve after each debate as they became more confident in themselves.

PINEHURST YEARBOOK 2021

During Lockdown, the Year 11 students created a cooking show to teach us how to make some traditional Spanish dishes while speaking in Spanish. This year, our AS students have learnt to discuss, argue, and defend their point of view on a range of topics including discrimination, community, the influence of idols on young people, the environment, education, the media, technology and much more.

Mathematics

The Pendulum Experiment: In Year 13, Maths students investigated the relationship between the length of a pendulum and how long it takes to swing.

Year 8 Students utilise their creative skills in Mathematics as they visualise and construct polyhedra from 2D nets. Year 7 students battled it out to represent the school at Mathex at Northcross Intermediate.

Here is one of our Year 8 Mathex teams in action at the competition held at Northcross Intermediate.

Junior College classes have worked hard this year to develop their fundamental motor skills, build stronger relationships and develop a deeper understanding of what it means to take on personal and social responsibility for others. Year 9 students developed their ability to lead and coach others and created some awesome sessions for their peers to take part in; they will make great leaders in the future.

Senior College classes built on their leadership skills through Sport Education and planned and ran their own tournaments to start the year. This gave them the independence to choose their activity, develop skills that would help them succeed and experience other roles in sport such as officiating and co-ordinating.

Social Science Year 7 & 8 Social Science

We have had an incredible year in Social Science. Our Year 7 students were lucky enough to compete in an Amazing Race at the museum, exploring all the new interactive displays and having a go at doing some of the jobs at the museum. Our Year 8 students learnt all about the oceans and what they can best do to protect them, they experimented with oil spills and had the Blake Trust come in and deliver an excellent VR headset lesson on protecting our oceans in Aotearoa.

Geography & History

In Year 9, students learnt from a range of topics that have helped inform them about their future studies, for example, Ancient Egypt.

Our Geography classes enjoyed stunning days researching and gathering data at the beach while our A level History class took a tour around Highwic House.

Global Perspectives In Global Perspectives, students took the opportunity to explore the issues they were passionate about.

Classical Studies Whether in the classroom or online, it was always rewarding to view and hear the Year 13 students’ combined intellectual comradery, sarcasm and wit. They came to epitomise the best qualities found in the “Homeric Heroes” of the ancient world. Within these young adults we came to perceive the glory of Achilles, the fortitude of Hector, the cunningness of Odysseus, the courage of Penelope, the inner beauty of Scylla and the selflessness of Aeneas.

Environmental Management Year 10 IGCSE students learnt to use scientific equipment and record results on the ‘health’ of our local stream flowing along the Pinehurst boundary.

Drama

Drama had a great year! We introduced not only TheatreSports as an extracurricular activity for students (led by some fantastic senior students), but also introduced Drama as a part of the student’s timetable in Year 7-8. Students in all years continued to build on their acting skills, not only through improvisation, but also Basel Masks, Devising, Theatre Technology/Design, Monologues, and a range of scripted texts, from The Grinch who stole Christmas to Macbeth. Our IGCSE Students were lucky enough to go to the Theatre to watch ‘The Crucible’, a play that they studied last year. It was a great opportunity for them to be able to see a play they know well on text to come to life in front of them.

Music Year 8

This year Year 8 started off the Music programme with some research projects. The students explored the Benefits of Music and a great range of topics emerged; from The Benefits of Music on Plants, Pets, Gaming and Athletics to The Benefits of Music on Brain Development, Study and De-stressing. Music History, was our next topic, where we looked at music’e evolution, from the Antiquities’ bone flutes to the 21st Century marble music machine.

PINEHURST YEARBOOK 2021

For our composition unit, the students experimented with a variety of sequencing programmes. While some focused on manipulating already pre-recorded samples, others braved recording their own original material and the results, as always were outstanding! Although the first semester students enjoyed the freedom to develop their practical skills in the classroom (through individual, paired or group projects), the second semester rotation had to be creative about their approaches to at-home performances and it was a pleasure to see the progress the students made.

PAGE 92

Music Year 9

We started off this year group’s musical journey with a research project set to explore each students’ own personal Musical Heritage and as always, it was fantastic to learn about their backgrounds, from a musical prospective. After a quick pit stop through the Musical History topic, we delved into the endless possibilities of our newly acquired composition programme, Soundtrap. Impressive compositions were made by this year group, with many students taking the opportunity to record and manipulate their own live recordings and structure them into a typical pop song. Practical performance, weather confined to the classroom or one’s home provided the opportunity the students to develop or continue developing their already advanced skills through goal-setting and self-assessment.

Music Year 10 and 11

It was a pleasure to witness many of our IGCSE students exceed the expected level. This year 21 students took Music at Year 10, the largest, and dare-I-say-it best cohort to come through the music department so far. It was a pleasure guiding a wide range of instrumentalists and singers through their first year of this two year course and I am very excited to see what they will accomplish next year. A further 8 students completed the IGCSE course at Year 11, many of which involved themselves ttaking part in the co-curricular groups offered at the school of which they represented Pinehurst in several competitions this year.

Year 12 and 13 Although a small class, the AS and A level group of students were all incredibly talented and diverse. Daniel Cradwick and Kate Le Lievre took on the Baroque Period and 21st Century repertoire we focused on, in their stride. I have particularly enjoyed their debates in class and their wide contextual, historical and social impacts and understanding on the musical compositions. Both students are integral and invaluable members of the Orchestra and the Jazz Band and proudly represented the school at the KBB competition this year.

The flute choir’s most senior students, Kelly Zeng (Yr 13), Petra Damianovich (Yr 13) and pianist Emma Zhuang Xue (Yr 9) tackled a most technically challenging piece this year; Two Rivers by A Rozman. The group was coached by one of our very skilled flute itinerants, Christine Mori retires this year, and we thank her for the support, patience and care of all of our students over the past years. The Beethoven Trio, comprising of Winston Hu on the piano (Yr 11), Yu Zhang Wu on the violoncello (Yr 10) and Matthew Verlaguet- Troncoso (Yr 10) on the clarinet prepared the infamous Beethoven Theme and Variations under the skilful guidance of violin tutor Marika Balzat. Both groups proudly represented Pinehurst at the annually held Chamber Music Competition this year. Three Rock Bands met on a weekly basis this year. These groups were mentored by Ben Fernandez and Jason Herbert , who managed to cleverly adapt the pieces to the band make-up and ability. Our chamber choir also continued to meet on a weekly basis and covered some traditional as well known pop and movie repertoire.

Although it has been an unusual year, a handful of concerts have been able to go ahead this year. The Informal Concert featured twenty performers, ranging from Year 1-13, who wowed the audience with their beginner to exceptionally skilled performance ability. These concerts are designed to be a performance platform through which students can gain the experience of performing in public, infront of family, peers and friends in the cosy environment of C2. Students from Year 1-13 are invited to perform no matter what their level of ability.

Music Orchestra

Jazz Band

The Pinehurst Orchestra continued to meet every Thursday lunchtime throughout the year, when not restricted by the lockdowns. This year an impressive 51 joined our largest co-curriclar group which includes members from both the Primary and the College. The group worked on a diverse repertoire to demonstrate their impressive performing skills - Mozart’s Piano Concerto no 21, mov 3, featuring Yu Zhang Wu (Yr 10) as a piano soloist; Scheherazade by Korsakov, featuring Chang Liu (Yr 11) on the violin, a tutti orchestra piece featuring the different instrumental families called Tico Tico and Harlem Nocturne by Hagen, featuring Daniel Cradwick (Yr 12) on the alto saxophone. The judges at the KBB Festival were impressed by our soloists and overall balance of sound, awarding the Orchestra, for the third time in a row, the Bronze Award.

The 18 piece Jazz Band, comprised of College students, continued meeting on Mondays (when possible) and continued to thrive under the skilful guidance of Ben Fernandez. A varied and contrasting repertoire allowed for our most experienced band members to shine and featured an original composition by Daniel Cradwick (Year 12) which premiered at the KBB competition. This year the band farewell Year 13 students; Daniel Hickey who has been an irreplaceable and long-standing tenor saxophone/ bongo player for the group, Anthony Raphael whose steady bass beat kept the group together like glue, even in the trickiest of pieces, Scott Greenough whose piano skills and dedication to the group will be greatly missed and James Harrison who although joined the group recently, demonstrated admirable electric guitar skills and gave the group the X-factor. A big thank you to Brianna Tirrado (Yr 12), our featured vocalist, who made singing in Portuguese sound not just effortless but also beautiful.

DoE Bronze Award The DOE Bronze Practice camp was certainly one to remember and even though it was only two days, we sure did fit a lot into that time. After arriving on Rangitoto Island, the Year 10 students were put into groups. They gathered their packs which contained all their belongings for the next two days, and set off to the beautiful Home Bay on Motutapu Island. On the 10km trek to Home Bay, there were a few small rain showers, but that didn’t obscure the experience of seeing so many native flora and fauna up close in their natural habitat.

After a steep climb down into Home Bay, they finally arrived and began setting up their tents (as close to the beach as allowed!), before enjoying some free time by going out to the wharf to do some swimming and wharf jumping. Then it was time for dinner which for some, was just cold baked beans or two-minute noodles! There was some time to chill out and relax after dinner, which was nice, after walking all day. After a long, restless night for many, students woke up nice and early, had a quick breakfast and packed their tents away, before starting the hike back to Rangitoto Wharf. They hiked all the way up to the top of the Rangitoto summit, before descending back down and finally arriving at the Rangitoto Wharf. This was an amazing experience for all Year 10, having to be self-sufficient, work in a team, use leadership and be responsible. This camp wouldn’t have been possible without the help from the teachers and parents that joined them. I’m sure students will take great memories with them of this camp. - Jack Potier -

DoE Silver Award

The Duke of Edinburgh Silver practice tramp comprised of 3 days and 2 nights during the 3rd, 4th and 5th of December. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic holding the country back in lockdown earlier in the year, cancellations of events were rapidly occurring - this journey unfortunately at the time being one of them. However, we were lucky enough to postpone the event and I cannot forget the excitement and fluttering inside my body when the final confirmation from the camp site came saying that we were able to move forward with this trip. 23 students and 3 teachers set out on an adventurous journey camping in Sullivan’s Bay, tramping around 4 different locations over the course of three days - Mahurangi Regional Park, Dome Valley, Wenderholm and Shakespeare Park. Despite the forecast looking to drench us with buckets of rain, we were fortunate enough to have Mother Nature going our way - witnessing the stunning views with the lovely sunshine we had prayed for. Day 2 was a challenge and also the highlight for the campers, completing an 8-hour trek on the rough tracks of Dome Valley, hence a true testament to the resilience and perseverance students have built over the past few years. In hindsight, the experience not only contributed to enriching and empowering participants, but also formed lifelong memories made by the camaraderie of the students. These moments will be cherished for the rest of our lives. We all would like to express our gratitude towards the amazing teachers Ms Toerien, Ms Rea and Mr Spilling that made this tramp possible during these difficult times! - Yeonsoo Son -

DoE Gold Award

Early in 2021 a small group of year 12s and 13s planned for their Duke of Edinburgh Gold tramp. We eventually decided to go kayaking instead of the conventional tramp near the Okura scenic reserve. We began the adventure kayaking up and down a river with the eventual goal of reaching our camp site, across a bay further along. River kayaking was very enjoyable, yet as we entered the bay we found that the combined barrage of waves and gale resulting in almost all of us tipping over. Through a group effort we helped each other out managing to park our kayaks against a nearby reef. With our campsite within an arm’s reach and the waters still rough we had no choice but to carry all the kayaks along bay’s edge to reach our campsite. This was a very arduous task which took the combined determination of the group to push through. We finally made it to the campsite for a well-earned rest and the next morning the decision was made to return home early due to the extreme weather. Although this tramp was cut short due to unexpected circumstances, it will remain as a very memorable experience for me. This is a prime example of the essence of the Duke of Edinburgh award where we experienced nature, teamwork and the ability to lead and adapt to changing situations. Throughout my Duke of Edinburgh journey, I had many memorable experiences on the various tramps over the years. Some significant ones include spending a night sleeping on the floor of an overcrowded cabin, carrying a struggling friend’s backpack through muddy terrain and living off dehydrated food. All these experiences taught me resilience and the value of working in a team which are essential life skills. I highly encourage others to get involved in the Duke of Edinburgh award as it is a great way to gain leaderships skills while also experiencing life outside a bubble. - Anthony Raphael -

Year 7 & 8 Council

This year the student leaders of Year 7 and 8 have done a fantastic job of supporting and helping to lead their peers. Despite a tumultuous year, they have prepared and led House events. They have worked with outside providers to budget for activities like the Kiwi Bubble Soccer in Term 1 and they have provided plans and proposals for improvements to specific areas of the school. During lockdown, they kept up their regular meeting slots and developed ideas for the Service and Leadership Award such as the ‘60 hours outside’ challenge. Furthermore, the council have worked alongside members of the Senior College council to help coordinate activities like the Jump Jam event in Term 3 and items for the College assemblies. The timing and cancellation of events have brought an added complexity to their role this year. They have needed to dig deep at times, and deal with these disappointments, all the while providing a supportive sounding board for their peers. The students have done an excellent job and have really risen to the occasion. They should be proud of their efforts this year.

Year 7 & 8 Service Awards The Service and Leadership Award is a chance for students to discover the personal insight and reward that comes from doing things for others.

This year has seen the students respond to the challenge with large numbers of students achieving both Bronze and Silver Awards. Students have been busy carrying out projects at home, such as cleaning out the dishwasher or regularly mowing the lawns at home. Students have worked alongside charities such as Radio Lollipop to raise money and this year the award helped to raise over $10,000 for World Vision. This year, that money will help to make life-saving changes to children in sub-Saharan Africa. On behalf of Pinehurst School and everyone else positively impacted by your service to others, we thank you students.

Student Council The Student Council this year has continued with their aim to support and cater for the student body. We have seen the council come together to find different ways of embracing and engaging student life, which this year has seen a whole array of different activities for the students.

Each member has worked hard to prepare and organise a Cultural Market Day to celebrate the cultural diversity within our school. They have provided an amazing opportunity for students to create their own food to sell which was filled with energy and a wonderful atmosphere for all to enjoy. The Student Council led by Anthony Raphael and James Harrison introduced Cultural Night for students to showcase performances to celebrate the diversity and range of talents within Pinehurst raising $1,193.60 for World Vision.

PINEHURST YEARBOOK 2021

Our members were fuelled by innovation and enthusiasm, ensuring that our meetings were packed with ideas, discussions, and excitement. They have demonstrated excellent resilience when the events have been postponed and reorganised a few times due to the government restrictions. They organised Scavenger Hunts to complete online during lockdown and even a Financial Literacy online workshop. We are very proud of the members of the Student Council showing passion and commitment in trying to bring all of their ideas to life, showcasing a healthy blend of leadership, initiative and life skills. At Pinehurst the Student Council has always had the goal of improving our school experience and this year was an amazing year for them!

Arts Council

Nineteen Year 9-13 students were peer selected this year to the Arts Council, headed by Catherine Franicevic. The Arts Council’s inter-house Jump Jam competition was expertly planned by its leader Catherine, MC’d by Kate and led by a group of enthusiastic seniors – Zahra, Emily, Roza and Shizzy for the entire college on two occasions. Students and teachers embraced their house colours and let their decorative imagination run wild, while they were transported to their primary years, when dancing to the Coconut Song, the Macarena and The Witch Doctor was the highlight of their week. Prizes for given out for: • Most Enthusiastic House • Most Coordinated House • Best Dressed POD • Best Individual Student • Most Enthusiastic Teacher These events put a smile and a wiggle even in the biggest of Pinehurst sceptics!

Citizenship Council The Citizenship Council is made up of a group of Senior College students who are passionate about serving our school and wider community. This has been a very hectic year that brought disruption to the group’s ability to gather as a cohesive group and facilitate initiatives that supported people in our community. Although we were met with unforeseen challenges from Covid, the Council was able to get a few initiatives off the ground, including awareness of World Refugee Day, Sports Equipment Drive for Cadbury Purple Locker, and Breast Cancer Awareness. The Citizenship Council continues to bring awareness about important opportunities for Pinehurst students to support those in our community in need.

Enviro Council

The goal of the Environmental Council is to spread awareness of issues that cause damage to the environment, provide options to counteract this damage and to make a difference to the environment, with our pursuits. After a school ground audit, we decided to tackle the following big issues. Students wanted plants in classrooms for their air cleaning and aesthetic properties. Applying some kiwi-ingenuity and resourcefulness the students successfully converted “our workroom” into a nursery and we had the beginnings of 30 + plants growing on the windowsill. The amount of plastic used to protect food, lying around school inspired our “Make your own and purchase our beeswax wrap” activity. The members of the council can in all honesty say, they can setup, clean-up and make it in 40 minutes. They made over 300 wraps of various sizes, giving students around school the opportunity to make their own wrap and learned a lot in the process. Having beautiful and practical outdoor spaces for the students, inspired our “Garden design competition”. We received some amazing entries and are looking forward to implementing the winning ideas, for the various categories and seeing the students enjoy the garden in the new year.

Sports Council

2021 saw the return of more regular inter-house sports events run and organised by the Sports Council. Led capably by Ryan and Anya, the council put their heads together to think about new ways to incease participation. The answer was in the choices of sports to play! This year we started to gather votes every fortnight to determine what sports the college wanted to take part in most. Overwhelmingly the votes came in for more accessible games such as long ball, bench ball and multi-sport. This didn’t stop the competitiveness however and with more participants came higher stakes and more spectators. Two houses dominated each week and the tussle between Totara and Kauri for first and second spot went down to the wire. Swimming Sports, Athletics Day and Cross Country were the only way to tell the two houses apart after a full year of inter-house lunchtime sport left the points tied. With Kauri winning Swimming Sports and Totara snatching victory at Athletics Day it was a very close call. Ultimately, Totara came away as the winners of the 2021 Inter-House Sports Competition. Congratulations to all students who gave their time to represent their house this year and the Sports Council looks forward to another strong competition next year.

Scholars Academy

The Scholars academy consists of a group of year 12 and 13 students that have displayed excellent results across both IGCSE and AS examinations. This year, Pinehurst has had one of the largest numbers of students to qualify and represent the school as a Scholar. Throughout the year, Scholars have been involved in volunteering in tutoring students from a range of College year groups across a wide variety of subjects offered at IGCSE and A Level. In Term 2, a Scholars trip took place at the Civic Theatre in the city in which the group attended a DocEdge film titled ‘Father of Cyborgs’ by neurologist Phil Kennedy. The fascinating movie consisted of Kennedy’s works regarding brain implants for sufferers of paralysis and those with lock-in syndrome, as well as his goal of allowing them to communicate via computers. A question and answer session was offered shortly afterwards where students were able to offer their ideas and have their questions answered by a neurologist. The result was a highly thought-provoking experience that opened the floor to questioning the possibilities and consequences of technology. - Danielle Bernacchi and David Lu

This year, the POD Mentors organised and ran Pinehurst’s first POD Challenge Day. It was a fantastic day filled with team building activities that strengthened on the relationships already formed in their POD communities. In addition, POD Mentors worked alongside their POD teachers, created daily opportunities for PODs to develop their communities to reflect their students’ interests. The POD Mentor role is an important first step for students interested in Student Leadership Roles in their final year at Pinehurst.

Amnesty International It was a mixed year full of disruptions that saw us meet less frequently than normal. Amidst the lockdowns, bubbles and then no ‘in person’ school for most of Term 3 and 4, we still got to attend a talk by Maggie Taylor, the Amnesty International, NZ, Youth Coordinator. Maggie spoke to us about the history of Amnesty International and the work it does, while inspiring us to do our part to help others who do not have a voice because of persecution or imprisonment. We look forward to next year for more opportunities to get involved with issues that matter.

The Busy Bean Cafe The Busy Bean Café has continued to thrive and grow this year which has been an exciting journey to date. The café has continued to be a vibrant and energetic service to our students and teachers bringing a variety of drinks and treats. The current barista’s have been trained by an external provider, where they have worked hard to perfect the art of making coffee making us very proud through the year. Each of the students have also taken on a different role within the business. Seeing how well they have taken on the challenge of these business functions is one that is admired.

This year’s CEO, Daniel Hickey and the Busy Bean team have developed new seasonal drinks, ran promotions, and served our wider community during parent conferences putting into practice all they are learning into each of the shifts they work. They have high standards which they meet through each drink served. The life skills programme offered, allows the students to develop their barista skills and to have the opportunity to practice these in an actual café. Their passion has really shown in their work this year with the way they have worked together as a team to continue to make the café as wonderful as it is this year.

The images here represent the range of activities that go on in our library; from displays and promotions to events and cosy reading nooks. The 2021 Readers Cup team came third place-equal in the North Shore competitions. We had a display linking in with Mr Zimmerman’s history class, including a suitcase of resources from The Holocaust Society. Librarian Sharon Blake’s amazing displays changed each fortnight in the Primary library. There was the National Simultaneous Storytime in Space, where the Primary School gathered to watch a book being read from the International Space Station and our Year 13 Library Leader Ibrahim Nakasha introduced the screening.
