Raisin River Canoe Race

April 15, 2023

Race starts at 10:30 a.m. Location: St. Andrews West (St. Andrews Catholic School, 17283 County Rd 18, St Andrews West, ON K0C 2A0) to Williamstown (Char-Lan Recreation Centre, 19740 John Street, Williamstown ON K0C 2J0) Age: All ages Cost: No cost for spectators Contact: [email protected] The Raisin Region Conservation Authority’s 50th Anniversary Raisin River Canoe Race is taking place on April 15, 2023. One of the longest canoe races in eastern Ontario, the Raisin River Canoe Race is an immensely popular springtime event that attracts hundreds of participants, who paddle through a 30-kilometre racecourse from St. Andrews West in South Stormont to Williamstown in South Glengarry while being cheered on by enthusiastic shoreline supporters. The Canoe Race is always held during the spring melt, when water levels on the Raisin River are high and flows are favourable. Contestants get a front-row seat to the natural beauty of the Raisin River and surrounding landscape, as the river’s racecourse meanders through agricultural lands, villages, rapids, and forests.

FAMILY FISHING DAY

RRCA

July 7, 2023

10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Gray’s Creek Conservation Area, 18045 County Road 2, Cornwall, ON Age: All ages Cost: Free Contact: [email protected] The Raisin Region Conservation Authority’s Family Fishing Day returns to Gray’s Creek Conservation Area on Friday, July 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free event lets young anglers and their families try their hand at catching fish while also enjoying a barbecue and a chance to win several prizes through a friendly fishing competition. A fishing licence is not required, as the event takes place during Ontario’s licence-free fishing week. The event is a fun way for families to learn about the region’s fish species, practice proper fishing techniques, and simply enjoy spending time in nature together. Hundreds of anglers of all skill levels typically join the event. While all ages are welcome, anglers aged 16 and under will have a chance to win prizes awarded for several categories, including biggest fish, smallest fish, and most fish caught. RRCA staff and volunteers will be on hand to help measure, weigh, and identify the day’s catches. Participants are strongly encouraged to observe proper fishing and water safety practices. For those without fishing equipment, the RRCA will be lending out rods, hooks and bobbers, while supplies last. 14 - 2023 SPRING & SUMMER COMMUNITY GUIDE

ROADSIDE SPRAYING

The Township of South Glengarry will be completing the following upgrades over the next few years to Glen Walter’s drinking water assets: • Rehabilitate Glen Walter’s Water Treatment Plant reservoir with a new and elevated 640m3 water storage tank with new pumps • Replace 4,000 metres of Glen Walter’s existing watermains with new 300 mm PVC pipes

Locations and contractor: TBA WATCH OUR WEBSITE AND SOCIAL MEDIA FOR UPDATES

NEED TO BE IN PLACE BY June 1st, 2023 If you do not want the ditches in front of your property to be sprayed, landowners must post ‘no spray’ signs at the start and finish of the property. The signs must be at least 1 foot by 2 feet in size and be easy to read from the shoulder of the road (about 3 feet from the edge of the gravel shoulder). Spraying is not planned if you mow the ditch in front of your property on a regular basis (if the roadside ditch is maintained like your front lawn). Spraying is planned to occur from the edge of the gravel shoulder to approximately 1 metre from the fence line.

The Township has committed to the following priority actions: • Protect healthy tree cover where possible within Township open and unopened road allowances. • Enhance tree cover and natural vegetation on Township owned land; tree removal shall be limited to unhealthy or hazardous trees but should be permitted to accommodate infrastructure that is in the public interest. • Increase tree planting on Township-owned land, especially within public parks where possible. • Acquire forested land when offered through land donations. • Support the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SDG) and the Raisin Region Conservation Authority (RRCA) in forested land acquisitions within the Township of South Glengarry. • Support and promote the Raisin Region Conservation Authority Tree Seedling Program. • Support residents and others in developing tree planting plans that ensure the long-term survival of the tree plantings. • Support and participate where possible in tree planting efforts by the Raisin Region Conservation Authority. • Develop a municipal commemorative tree program where people can buy and plant trees in municipal parks in honour of their loved ones who have passed or organizations. • Require a tree planting schedule as a condition of draft plan approval for new subdivisions that will require one native tree in front of each lot within the front yard. • Support the replacement of native trees that are proposed to be removed as part of a development; either in a new location on the subject property or in a mutually agreed upon location elsewhere in the Township. • Encourage tree planting as part of the Landscaping Program within the Township’s Community Improvement Plan. • Continue to implement the Natural Heritage policies within the Official Plan. • Encourage residents to obtain an approved managed forest plan and to have their properties classified as a Managed Forest to take advantage of the Managed Forest Tax Incentive Program where you pay 25% of the municipal tax rate set for residential properties. • Explore the creation and implementation of other tax incentive programs to encourage the protection of existing forested properties and to encourage the creation of forested properties. • Support property owners in their efforts to implement best management practices including naturalized buffer strips adjacent to watercourses and the protection of riparian zones. • The Council of the Township of South Glengarry approved a Tree Canopy and Natural Vegetation Policy to reduce the loss of tree coverage in South Glengarry and to protect and increase tree coverage. Firework Safety

FIRE SERVICES

Make sure your smoke alarms perform as intended – When you need them the most!

How to dispose of fireworks correctly and safely. Improper disposal of fireworks can cause fires in waste collection vehicles and at facilities. Never put used or unused fireworks in the Blue Bin (recycling). Learn how to correctly dispose of fireworks using the Recycle Coach – What Goes Where. Just type the name of a waste item such as “used fireworks” or “unused fireworks” into the Search field and the tool will tell you how to dispose of it. Firework safety reminders: • You must be 18 years of age to possess or discharge fireworks • Appoint a responsible person to be in charge. Only adults aware of the hazards and essential safety precautions should handle and discharge fireworks • Carefully read and follow the label directions on fireworks packaging • Always keep a water hose or pail of water close by when discharging fireworks • Discharge fireworks well away from combustible materials like buildings, trees and dry grass • Keep onlookers a safe distance, upwind from the area where fireworks are discharged • Light one firework at a time, and only when located on the ground • Never try to light a firework in your hand or re-light dud fireworks. For dud fireworks, it is best to wait 30 minutes and soak them in a bucket of water • Discharge fireworks only if wind conditions do not create a safety hazard • Keep sparklers away from children. Sparklers burn extremely hot and can ignite clothing, causing blindness and severe burns. The sparkler wire remains hot for some minutes after burnout. It should be immediately soaked in water to avoid injury • If someone is burned, run cool water over the wound for three to five minutes and, if necessary, seek medical attention • For emergencies only, call 911. 2023 SPRING & SUMMER COMMUNITY GUIDE - 29
